We had a large party (10-12 people) to celebrate my son's successful doctoral dissertation at UConn. He chose Willington Pizza House because it's his favorite place to have pizza... and now we know why. I am still in shock that the total bill for 9 hungry college kids and two hungry out-of-town parental units was still under $200. We did have pitchers of cider too - and everyone left with food. Speaking of food - the pizza my husband and I split was cheese, extra cheese, sausage, mushroom, and pepperoni. The crust of the pizza was phenomenal - you don't get a crust like that anywhere in California. Crunchy outside, chewy inside with a slight saltiness -- almost like a fine sourdough... I don't know- it was absolutely delicious. The salad we had was also good, but the pizza is what sticks to my memory - and probably my belly too! Tried Willington pizza for the second and last time last night. Ordered take out and asked for the pizza to be on the well done side. Once we got the pizza home we're very disappointed. It was very greasy, and doughy every slice we attempted to eat it just fell apart. We also got the mozz sticks, which aren't mozz sticks. Basically a chunk of fried mozz which could've used a bit more time to be honest. The sauce that came with the fried mozz was very bland, and plain. Absolutely no flavor whatsoever to their sauce. I've been twice to Willington Pizza recently. Once for takeout after a hike in Mansfield and once for dinner in the dining room with my MIL. I have a gluten allergy so I'm always leery of pizza places and cross-contamination. I'm happy to report that I was fine after both visits. I had the traditional pizza first and the Seafood Casino on my second visit. Both were excellent and the GF crust was really good. My MIL had a sausage pizza and said it was the best she's had in quite a while. Service was good. I used the ladies room. It was clean and well maintained. I've been going to this fine establishment at least once a month and each time have never been disappointed with either the food or the service. Willington is still much the same as it was when I last reviewed it, which was apparently over a decade ago! The parking lots and bathrooms are nicer now, and the bar has a better beer selection, and the food is still good. Much of the rest is unchanged - still rustic, NASCAR and UConn stuff all over the walls, same wood floors and booths, same small town charm, still a popular employer for UConn students as wait staff. As mentioned in my prior review, some of their pizzas are far enough away from traditional pizza that it might not cure a pizza craving, but others are available as well of course. I typically get one traditional pizza and one specialty pizza to cover all bases. The red potato pizza is a staple here, and a good option for the non-traditional option. The California is also very good, but you better like roasted garlic, as there'll be a LOT of it. That was my latest pizza here, and I had honestly forgotten how good it is. I think I'm drooling. Good thing the keyboard isn't under my chin. Important note - their pizza style is the more traditional thicker crust, not New Haven thin crust or those small artisan pizzas. The large salads are still very worth it, and the garlic bread is delicious. If multiple people want a salad, try getting one of the larges instead. Granted not all of them can be ordered as a large, but it's your best bet financially if the one you wanted does. Their meatballs are really good as well. We have ordered them to go on more than one occasion. The kids pasta dish was also a great deal, with the leftovers serving as my lunch the following day. Aside from that, however, I can't really comment on the rest of the food options. We usually stick to pizza. Service: The service is usually pretty good there. The waiter/waitress we've had in most cases has been a UConn student (or in that age range), but with a greater level of service than one might expect. I suspect they have a pretty good onboarding program or are limiting hiring to those with some documented experience, but that's all just a guess. read more

We revisited an old favorite after a UConn basketball game and we were happy to see that not much had changed. The house salad was perfectly portioned for four. We couldn't pass up the chance to order the red potato pizza with broccoli and bacon, which is the perfect comfort food for a cold winter night. We also ordered the chicken gorgonzola pizza which we thought tasted bland and dry. Both pizzas were densely loaded with toppings and served piping hot. Willington Pizza House is a pizzeria that opened in Willington, Connecticut in 1978. It was founded by Jeff Kelly. When it first opened, the restaurant only had four tables and was essentially a one-man operation. By 1981, it outgrew its location and moved to its current one. The pizzeria can now fit well over 200 people. In 1998, a second location (Willington Pizza Too) was opened at 11 Phelps Way with a slightly different menu. Although Connecticut is well-known for thin-crust New Haven-style "apizza", Willington Pizza House serves a thicker crust pie with much more unusual toppings. Their most well-known pie is the 'Red Potato Pizza': a plain crust pizza with sour cream, sliced red potatoes, sharp cheddar cheese, chives, and your choice of bacon, broccoli or both. Willington Pizza House is more of a sit-down pizzeria while Willington Pizza Too is more of a pub-style restaurant known for their chicken wings. My wife and I have visited Willington Pizza House several times over the years. My wife turned me onto them because she is a UConn alumnus. The pizzeria is a short distance from the campus and it's a popular dining destination for UConn students. On our most recent visit, we brought our son along for his first time. We ordered a large Red Potato Pie as well as a large Shrimp Scampi Pie (white pizza with garlic, diced tomatoes, capers, shrimp and mozzarella). The pies were excellent as usual, and our son liked them too. Willington Pizza House also has an excellent craft beer selection. I ordered the Willington Pizza Oktoberfest: a Märzen that's brewed exclusively for the pizzeria by Thomas Hooker Brewery in Bloomfield. The beer was a good pairing with the pizza. Stopped in for lunch and was greeted and seated promptly. Restaurant is large with plenty of comfortable seating. Our drink order was taken and the great thing is they have Hosmer birch beer on tap so you can get refills! We ordered a half order of garlic mozzarella bread, chicken quesadilla, and half a Genoa salami grinder. The garlic bread came pretty quickly and was nice and piping hot. Plenty of cheeses was place on top of the bread which had 8 sections to it. There were plenty of visible pieces of garlic as well and the bread had plenty of butter on it. Very tasty! The chicken quesadilla normally is done with Buffalo chicken but in this case regular chicken was requested. The chicken was very moist and there was plenty of cheese. This is an appetizer but it was huge enough that it qualified as a meal. Not sure the picture re does it justice for his large it was. The grinder came with plenty of salami, cheese, lettuce, and sweet pepper strips. It was served open face after having been warmed up in the oven. The bread was fresh and soft making the sandwich very enjoyable. Service was outstanding with our server having a great sense of humor and personality. I first went to a California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) about 22 years ago when I was on vacation. Prior to then, pizza was all mozzarella, and red sauce, and pepperoni, and sausage, and maybe a vegetable or two. CPK, with its Thai Chicken Pizza and BBQ Chicken Pizza, opened my eyes to what a pizza potentially could be. Willington Pizza has been doing CPK-type stuff at a much higher level for years. I'm sure you could order a pepperoni pizza at Willington Pizza, but we've never done it. We order the loaded Red Potato Pizza, the Taco Pizza, the Cheeseburger Pizza, the Seafood Pizza or the Buffalo Chicken Pizza. For some people, this type of specialty pizza is too far out of the box. But we love it, and make the 30 minute drive there once a year or so. I'm not sure you need to make that drive if you're ordering sausage and peppers We were able to get an outside table with a lot of room around it. Service was friendly and timely. We almost always order the delicious, award-winning Red Potato Pizza with broccoli and bacon. It also has sour cream, cheddar and chives. If it sounds good to you, you'll love it. It tastes like a loaded baked potato after all. If it does not sound good to you, you should probably go a different direction. In my experience, this pizza is polarizing. I would definitely get it with the bacon crumbles because they add texture and bursts of salt Tonight, we were really feeling the Taco Pizza. It has taco meat, tortilla chips, onions, peppers and cheddar cheese. And just like family taco night, It comes with a side plate of taco fixings like lettuce, chopped tomato, black olives and sour cream. It's delicious. It's almost more like an enchilada casserole than a pizza, but if I saw enchilada casserole on a menu, I would probably order that too. Willington's crust is appropriately hardy to hold all of these ingredients, but it's not heavy-tasting. It keeps the focus on the toppings. I didn't go to nearby UCONN, but my wife did. I feel like I suck up some of that nostalgia by osmosis. Willington Pizza is a cool place with a good beer list and I'm happy when I'm there. Eclectic decor, good pizza. Service has always been great and I've never had to wait to be seated. Keep in mind the original location does not have a fryer (but Willington Pizza Too does and they're not far away.) The taco pizza is great because they give you all the cold toppings on the side so you can build it how you like it and if you take some home it doesn't get soggy and you won't have to reheat your lettuce. The red potato pizza is great as well, and we order it without broccoli because vegetables have no business being on this carb heavy creation. Eating this pizza will make you tired . Had a delicious time at Willington Pizza House last night and enjoyed dinner on their patio. The patio was perfect for a warm air day! We were promptly sat, even with a busier evening. For appetizers we ordered a Caesar salad and the buffalo chicken dip. While the Caesar salad was not impressive (greens were wilted from the dressing), the Buffalo chicken dip was amazing! This dip was cheesy and flavored perfectly. I will say the calzone was cooked perfectly and the pizza was mighty tasty with good portion sizes! We showed up at the busiest time of the night, right around 6:00. Got a table within 30 minutes, had a great server Mike, and a wonderful experience. We ordered the always great cheeseburger pizza and went out of our comfort zone with a chicken gorgonzola pie. Unfortunately, as most likely happens, when you venture outside of what you're used to, you're most often disappointed. I'm not sure if we got the correct pie or not, but I'll be darned if there was any Gorgonzola on the pie. There was certainly plenty of broccoli, but honestly, not a crumble of gorg that any of us tasted. On the plus side, the cheeseburger pizza was outstanding, and our server, Mike, was fabulous. After many years of enjoying Willington Pizza, I won't trash them for one subpar pizza, but I will beware in the future.
