I ordered grape, lemon, and lilikoi. The lilikoi is like a passion fruit flavor and it was really good. Probably my favorite. All three were good together. The cup that it was in made it fairly difficult to eat and our little one had a really hard time with it. I tend to like softer ice better, and theirs was a bit hard. Customer service was good though! Very kind and friendly. Also good prices.

Old school kine shaved ice. Huge! Keiki (kid size), is bigger than some regular size ones elsewhere. Pretty cheap too! Lots of syrup (not organic), but plenty kine! Good w/ a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the bottom (only $1)-- do it! Also nice selection of crack seed for cheap. Needs a garbage to throw away after, but nice to have a few benches and visit with the locals and tourists. Met a nice older couple-- 3rd generation Hilo resident. That's what fun about these local places-- rubbing shoulders with the locals :)

While on the big island, I had to get some ice shave. This is the same thing as shave ice, which is that the syrup flavored grated ice is called on all the other Hawaiian islands or snow cones, which is what mainland people call this local treat.... ice shave... haha! On Oahu, shave ice can cost $4-$10 depending on where you get it. On the big island, apparently it's normal for shave ice to cost $2!! TWO. Ok, well my shave ice ended up costing $4. No tax, just straight up $4 because I got a regular size (which is huge) and topped it with cream. Still, the $2 Keiki size is generous and there are 10 or so great flavors to choose from. The ice quality is great, not exactly as soft as wailoa, but it was fine with me:) no complaints. They even have a nice bench outside, perfect to take selfies on next to their window sign. In addition to shave ice, I mean "ice shave", they also sell a few lihing seeds and t shirts. The service was friendly, it is centrally located in downtown Hilo near the farmers market and there is lots of parking. Definitely a must-stop!

Oh my gosh!!! I absolutely love this place for so many reasons!! First of all, the service was AMAZING!! I didn't catch her name, but I believe she's the owner; she was so patient, kind, and caring with her customers. Before helping me and my husband, she helped an older woman, and even helped her walk her shaved ice to her car! Who does that nowadays! Guys, and she did this with the sweetest smile! I can't help but talk kindly of her because she definitely left an impression on us! Second, the shaved ice was delicious! We got a large with ice cream! Definitely refreshing on a humid day in Hilo. Lastly, it's a total "mom and pops". I love supporting small businesses, they make me feel at home and welcomed. Go check it out today! That is, if you're in Hilo.

Found street parking down the block. It's a small place that's painted green on the outside. No seating inside but two long benches outside. The lady is super sweet and friendly. Regular size was huge (almost as big as Oahu's Shimazu shave ice portions) and $5. I paid $1 more for cream (aka condensed milk). Limited flavors but enough options. They gave A LOT of syrup. For my rainbow shave ice, I had a choice of banana (typical fare) or pineapple. The pineapple syrup was nice and tart. At shave ice places, the ice texture is key. This one is really fine, no crunchiness as you eat it. It also didn't melt too fast, even during this hot summer season eating it outside. Even at the bottom of my cone, it was still ice and not liquid. For some reason, the syrup colors didn't mix at the bottom. It was like slurping up a unicorn! Would come back here for sure next time I'm in Hilo!!!

Hawaiian Rainbow special (Li hing mui, pineapple, blue hawaiian (?)) I forgot what the blue was but nonetheless was really good!

Visited today (Aug 2, 2020) after a good hike at the National Park. They are open for takeout! Loved the sky high shave ice for a good price. We prefer the more natural homemade syrups but can't be too picky in a pandemic! The flavors were yummy and they had a specialty rainbow flavor where the colors all blend together to make a very beautiful rainbow shave ice. The lady at the counter was very nice and took her time to make each one special. read more

Authentic Hawaiian shave ice with ice cream, Azuki bean, and topped with sweetened condensed milk cream. Shave Ice should be like powder snow and this is definitely it. The flavors here are amazing. The people who run it are so nice and helpful. Made us shave ice even after we got there after they closed. If we stayed on the Hilo side of the island, we would've been there every day. The price was $4 for a really big shave ice and I kept asking if it was correct since I paid so much more for a lot less elsewhere. read more

tastes really artificial, the portion sizes are WAY too big for the cones they give you, so mine immediately melted all over me. couldn't even get to the ice cream in the middle because I had to just throw it away it was immediately getting everywhere. i don't get why they don't have cups or more substantial bowls or even real spoons to eat it with? service was fine and if you want large portions of artificial tasting shave ice, this is the place for you! read more

We hunted down all the shave ice stops on the Big Island and this was my ABSOLUTE favorite! I had a coconut bubble gum and medium. It was delicious and the price was just right. I would recommend this to anyone who stops in Hilo. You will it! read more

To cool off on a hot day in Hilo, I like going to Wilson's by the Bay for a Hawaiian Ice. They have friendly upbeat service and great prices. Plus their syrups are super flavorful and make a great ice. I'm not a shave ice/ice shave expert but I do know what tastes good. and these ices are good... For a special treat, I like to add adzuki beans. The $2 keiki is a steal & is a great size even for us grown ups. The regular size is big so bring your appetite or someone to share it with. read more

Blue vanilla was kind of weak. Definitely get the coconut with cream. The number of lesbians out front was kind of suspicious, but I didn't have any problems there. Others may not be so lucky. I highly recommend this place when it's hot out. read more

Don't forget to add the cream/yogurt to your shaved ice. Trust me, It'll make a huge difference! I stopped by here after shopping at the farmers market nearby. Its a small little place. My family and I ordered almost everything on the menu just to try it out. Its alright without the yogurt. So, don't forget the cream/yogurt for a dollar more (I think). read more

The place is a local favorite. It's a small place with standing room only. The machine they use is simple, it cuts the ice cube into small pieces, making it light and flaky. It's the best shave I have ever had! I had a shave ice with ice cream in the center. It was really good. But then I asked for a second one, and asked for a local flavor combination and it was even better! Swing by if you in the local Hilo area! You won't be disappointed. read more

Best shave ice in Hilo! Always greeted with a smile and friendly conversation. When you see the old school ice machine you know that their ice is going to be finely shaved and super soft. Their syrups aren't overly sweet like other shave ice places and you can even add the sweet cream on top without feeling like you're going to end up with a cavity. My go-to is a regular with ice cream: banana, coconut and melon. read more

The BEST shaved ice I've had! Great prices and great ice. Huge portions, so yummy. Wish I lived here I would have it all the time! Always our go to spot when we come to the big island. Sweet from the service to the shave ice, Wilson's is by the bay, a modest farmer's market, and a slew of lunch spots. There is a bench outside the storefront to cool off the puppies while you chill with your mountain of ice or take it on the go for a walk along the water. The "Keiki", although the smallest was the perfect size for our post lunch, pre-flight cool snack. We opted for the Lilikoi (passion fruit) which I expected to be a little more tart, but coupled with a condensed milk add-on was a light, yet satisfying combo that was equal parts Tropical and Creamsicle. None more to be said... don't hesitate to visit! read more

So flippen yummy. Got a kid size and that was PLENTY. Highly recommend getting the ice cream in the center and/or the cream on top. I had cream and it was so so good. Strawberry & melon were my choices and loved it. There was only one lady working a busy day, and she was the nicest lady ever!!!! Would go back. read more

Ambiance 5/5 Small inside with a waiting bench. There are two lines outside for walk-ins and phone orders. I've had mochi from many different places in San Francisco, Little Tokyo in LA, and Japan and this lives up to the hype.

The store seemed pretty quiet, street parking outside was easy, and the staff I interacted with here was friendly. Puna Chocolate Company is a good rest spot to stop by to escape from the busyness of Downtown Hilo.

We didn't think of anything when we saw it the first time. By just looking at the name of it though, my immediate reaction was, "Is this a kombuchas bar??" Well, it is but it's not just kombuchas they serve; it's more than that. The breakfast/brunch dishes they serve (although they don't have a huge selection) are quite diverse. I do incorporate a lot of vegetarian/vegan diet into my daily meal routine so when I saw the Verdant Vegan I simply couldn't skip it. As my daughter and I usually split a plate when we dine together she agreed to this option of mine. Glad we did. This plate has all sorts of goodness included in it. Sautéed veggies, house-made lentil walnut chorizo, ginger beet kraut, fire-roasted jalapeno cashew crema, fire-roasted tomato salsa, and it's topped it off with sprouts. This whole thing comes with either purple sweet potato home fries or red rice (which we went with the purple sweet potato fries and ended up getting a side red rice. We also got the side kimchi and one egg sunny side up.) And we shared a 16oz Ceremonial Matcha latte as well. This vegan plate is way more than vegan. It's mighty as hell. For those who are still not sure about vegan options will definitely second guess it for something that isn't vegan/vegetarian. It's truly nutrition packed in so many different ways. If I lived close to this cafe, I would eat here once a week to enjoy this delightful meal. I am not kidding. I enjoyed the matcha latte very much although my daughter rated it as "okay". She likes her matcha in a very particular way so it unfortunately didn't impress her. This is not to say that she disliked it. She said it wasn't bad either. This place is a "walk in, order upfront, pick a table where you want to sit and one of the staff will bring your food to you" style cafe. Water is self-served. Once you are done with your meal you'll put your dirty dishes in the designated tub. I like this efficient style of serving food. This place has great vibes as well. A bit hippie-ish where bright dark colors such as purple and red are incorporated into the interior. There is even a stage where bands perform on certain days/times. Quite cool-looking. If you are visiting Hilo soon then put this place on your "must visit" restaurant list. Friendly staff, reasonable prices and quality food will entertain you for sure.
