Windy City Movers saves the day! Our daughter was alone, moving from one college apartment to another when the movers we hired didn't show up. She needed to be out that day, so I called Windy City Movers. Despite it being the first of the month, they were able to fit her little move in during their busy day. Living across the country, we felt anxious about her moving solo, and when the other company didn't show, we were all in a panic. Nick from Windy City Movers was empathetic, patient and helped get us onto their busy schedule, literally saving the day. Our daughters was nervous for her first solo move, but Windy City made her feel comfortable and confident with their careful packing and professionalism. The morning of our move they no-showed. There was no communication with us to tell us they weren't coming. We had to continuously call their management until they finally admitted no one was coming. Completely screwed us over on our moving day and cost us hundreds of dollars in lost elevator reservations and mattress disposal. Nothing has been done to make up for the error. Unreliable. No-Showed and the owner did nothing to resolve their error. The move was scheduled months in advance and was in their computer system. However the information was never transferred to the scheduler. The owner first denied the move was even scheduled, and then claimed he was on a truck for hours and could not view all of the confirmations his computer system sent out confirming the date and time of the move. He then claimed that people confuse his company with New City Movers implying that somehow we might have had the wrong company. Windy City Movers is totally unreliable, and should be avoided. ⁩If I could give 0 stars I would. We were very pleased with the people on the phone we spoke with to coordinate the move - they were very professional and easy to work with. They quoted us for our 1 bedroom apartment move (about a half mile away) and we agreed with the quoted amount. However, the movers showed up and were not professional at all. They took over 5 hours to move a 1 bedroom apartment in elevator buildings with loading docks at both. Only one of the movers seemed to be doing anything. The other two kept making allusions to doing drugs and were clearly smoking (likely meth or crack cocaine) in the truck while they were supposed to be loading. Over the course of packing up the truck they were visibly high and not making any sense in their words. They broke multiple things even when the boxes were clearly marked fragile and did not apologize, instead making jokes about the broken objects. They took a "coffee break" while traveling between the old and new buildings while we waited 45 mins for them to show up (even though the new building was only a half mile away). In addition, everything reeked of smoke when it was brought up to our new apartment and they left scratches and dents in our door from the furniture. The final price was almost double what we were quoted. If you are thinking of using Windy City movers, I would highly recommend going with someone else. read more

They showed up early with a three person crew. We have a decent bit of vintage furniture from our grandparents and they took care of each piece. They move incredibly quickly and efficiently and work well as a team. The townhouse we moved into wouldn't fit the large furniture up the stairway so we had to hoist it up through a second floor balcony. This was definitely not an easy move. I had a lot of stuff, needed help, was glad to pay for it even if it was more than I had expected. BUT, when the movers came an hour early without masks or gloves on, some guys saying they could get them, other guys not, I didn't insist. Very nice people! My boyfriend scheduled our move very easily over the phone and Danny and his crew were great! Very friendly, obviously had a lot of experience packing and moving all of our furniture. Nothing was damaged! My only critique would be the quoting process. Other companies we quoted with analyzed our actual move and gave quotes based on how much time they thought it would take (we moved from a third floor walk up to a high rise with an elevator). Our quote from Windy City gave us very factual information about price per hour, but didn't mention how long they thought it would take based on their experience. We went with Windy City based on a friend's recommendation and the lowest quote. Our final price ended up being almost double the quote, because it took almost three hours to load from our starting location and then another hour and a half to unload. If I had known, I would have chosen a different company, as money was a little tight at the time. Overall, a great experience, just a little more money than we had anticipated spending. They will do a very nice job, just be sure to be more thorough when pricing your move. read more

These guys did an okay job moving with one exception. One of the movers spent most of the day grumbling about having to be there. He broke a window shade, dropped a snow shovel off the 3rd floor balcony to save a trip down, which bent it. He also cracked a piece of sculpture, and scraped the hardwood floor. Not an impressive showing. When I paid him his $20 gratuity he gave me all this attitude, saying "Hey, we're not delivering food here. Is this all? Are the other guys getting the same?" I'm not cheap so I'm not going to stiff someone even if they were subpar, but it was incredibly unprofessional and rude. In short, they were okay if you don't mind dealing with a bit of grief. Best. Movers. Ever. We had a terrible moving experience last time so needless to say, I wasn't in a big hurry to call that service back. A couple friends suggested Windy City and based ok those recommendations plus the reviews here on Yelp, I went for it. We booked about a month in advance and they scheduled us for a Saturday afternoon move, the estimated time between 1-3pm. The woman I spoke with quoted me $540 for a 2 bedroom move plus truck fee. The team called us twice on the day of the move to keep us updated on the progress of their morning move and, as promised, showed up around 2:45pm. We had Dave, Bill and... Dave's brother (sorry Dave's brother. Your name is escaping me right now). They were friendly but, most importantly, they kicked our stack of boxes' ASS. They had us out of our old place and into the new one in just under 4 hours. Plus, the price was exactly what I was quoted. Not a single thing was damaged and it was overall an awesome moving experience. We saw the guys driving on their morning move the next day and waved at them. They didn't notice us. Wow. This is the worst company we have every worked with. I am a professor and have moved many times in the last few years and this was absolutely the worst experience I have had. First, when the movers showed up they could not seem to understand the simple instructions for using our buildings loading dock even through the building has 2-3 moves a day and everyone else seems to understand fine. When we asked this man to Saran Wrap a few items he said this was not his job. We asked to have 2 antique furniture items padded a certain way and the guys argued with us telling us that they knew how to do it. They refused to do what we asked and got irate. We had marked a few boxes fragile and not to stack them and they did not listen -- again "we know what we are doing" The guys were very cranky about our dog. One of them stepped on him and then kicked him. We called the office, expecting to reach someone who could help us find a workable solution and the woman we reached was just as bad as the guys. She was immediately defensive and got an attitude. When we walked down to the truck area, one of the guys was talking trash about us to our maintenance guy, who told us after what jerks they were. In a way, perhaps this is the best thing they did, but super unprofessional -- they decided to not do the move and left. Our take away, nightmare movers, from beginning to end. If you want hostile, man-splaning, disrespectful, unprofessional movers, who may or may not even finish the job, go with these guys. All I needed was removal/ disposal of a bed and large area rug (unaccepted for donation) Ed (Windy City) kindly assured me that no job was too small for them, offered me a competitive (and very reasonable) rate and arranged my pickup for the following morning! We used Windy City Movers, Inc. recently to load up our moving truck for us. We had very low expectations about our movers and were prepared to have to tell them what to do every step of the way. Not needed here! Some of the successes of the day include: * They showed up exactly on time. To the minute! * The movers were very polite and professionals. * Our movers had one experienced pro and one person new to moving. But they worked well together, with the pro gently and professionally teaching the other man how to do things. * They listened to our preferences in how to pack our truck. * They helped us carry even bags and boxes of garbage down to the dumpster. Also, we had some issues the day of the move that required us to change the time that we needed our movers to show up. We called and asked for a new time. Their response? "Let me make some calls." And it all worked out. Amazing! I thought for sure we would have to make do with our original time. (I wouldn't recommend changing the time on them, as it does mess with their schedule for the day. But it's nice to know that if something happens, they can accommodate.) A great, great job - much appreciated! I was very disappointed with the way my move was handled. I was supposed to move in the middle of the month, and a week before, they emailed to cancel, because their boss, who was the piano moving expert as I was told, couldn't be there. We rescheduled for the following week after I spoke to my landlord and was able to extend my lease. Initially, the quote was very reasonable. A few days before the rescheduled move was scheduled, I received another email saying the move would probably take longer than expected because of the piano (which was a tricky move), so the quote increased about $150. Then a day or so later, I received another email saying the piano fee was changing from $100 to $300 even though they told me in writing the piano fee would be $100. I did ask if they would honor the original quote, but I was not given a straight answer. The day of the move, the movers show up and are very nice, but the boss who we rescheduled to move for wasn't there which was upsetting, since I had to pay an extra half a month's rent. The movers did a good job, but it did take about 7 hours to move a 1 bedroom apartment with an additional stop for another bedroom set pick up. Moving the piano was actually fairly quick, and my husband moved all of our packed boxes and all of our small furniture to try to save time and money. The movers did adjust the piano quote back to $100 after I showed them the email, and they couldn't connect with their manager. Once they did connect, the price was again changed to $300 for the piano, and at that point I really had no choice. I feel this was very dishonest and unprofessional. The total wound up being almost double what I was initially quoted. I spent way more than I thought I would, and the rescheduling and multiple price increases created a very stressful, difficult moving situation. read more

Moved from a 2BR/2BA to a 3BR/2BA less than a mile away, both elevator buildings. The movers arrived promptly, and were very thorough in packing everything. Nothing suffered major damage during the move. However, I was quoted a price for 4 movers, taking 8 hours. 2 of the movers were actively packing and moving items to and from the truck, and 1 was loading and unloading the truck. I have no idea what the 4th person was doing throughout the move. Additionally, the entire crew took close to an hour for lunch, and an additional 30-45 minute break during the move out, but only deducted 30 minutes for lunch. Based on past experiences and other reviews, this move was fine overall. But I definitely came away feeling ripped off, and that the move had wasted a lot more time than it needed to. read more

the worst experience ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we scheduled a move with this company yesterday and it didnt happen!!!!!!!!!! originally scheduled for 9am to 12pm and they showed up at 4:15pm. driver and dispatch were all unprofessional by putting us on hold for half an hour with each question. and the driver arrives with attitude and gave us a finger and left. a finger!!! soak that in if you are considering this company!!!!! they left a family's move on hold and hostage to their game! feeling the crunch, we asked what they can do, and they wanted to charge us extra for a night move or schedule for the following day at almost the double the original quote. moving is chaotic enough.... no one needs to add stress of this company with its unprofessional, dishonest, and unorganized operation. dont bite with their lower bid, they will get you at the end. when we got that 48 hours prior to move confirmation call with their spiel, we knew we were going to be nickel and dimed when its time to settle. but you deal feeling stuck. so don't bite!!!!!! they also only take cash, m.o. ya know...stuff that clearly says they will screw you and leave you with no recourse. you wont know that while getting a quote. i advise everyone to ask that question. that should be a sign to what kind of company you are hiring!!! found a company that was able to get us in the following day. karma at its best. karma will get this company too!!! stay away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this company deserves negative 5 star!!!!! read more

UPDATE to previous review: Within an half hour of me posting the previous review, the owner emailed me an apology stating that there had been a clerical error and they had emailed the estimate to the incorrect email address, and they included the estimate for me to view. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, because things happen! I still do think it's strange that even though I messaged and left a voicemail for them, it took a Yelp review for me to get a response. Highly unreliable: the guy turned up over an hour late for an estimate, no apology, then told me he would get the quote to me within 24 to 48 hours. Almost a week later -- after I chased them -- they finally got back to me. I told them I had gone with someone else because they had shown themselves to be unreliable. The person on the phone was kind of jerky about that, clearly did not care that they had lost business due to their disorganization. Hate to think how they would respond if you complained they didn't turn up to move you on the day! I have gone with Alliance, they gave me a quote on the spot (as did Chicago professionals) and lots of tips about packing, seemed much more professional, we shall see read more

Mitch and Gary were very efficient, professional, and pleasant. I have a narrow hall leading into my condo, and multiple other professionals told me getting a couch in was a lost cause. Mitch and Gary hoisted my sofa over my second floor balcony to get it inside, and even put the sectional together and showed me how to do it. So I should preface this with the fact that my move seemed like a complete aberration from the norm. First they got there like 10-15 minutes late, then I meet them and one of the guys was definitely on something. He ate some candy and literally dropped the wrapper on the floor and proceeded to be oblivious. He picked up one item then went downstairs and stayed on the phone or sat in the truck. I called the company because I was paying for 3 people but only got two, so then they made him work. He then decided to go to the bathroom and lock himself in to go to sleep where he snored loudly and we got to hold it since he didn't come out. Finally someone came to get him and we got another guy. The move due to the complications went from what should have been between 4-5 hours to over 6 which is hundreds of dollars. I have to say I was impressed with Jose,Dave,and Bill but the whole experience and expense left a bad taste in my mouth. Also I called to complain because i asked the movers how long it would have taken with proper staffing and they said like 4.5 and I believe I should be refunded for the extra hours. This far the main management who can make decisions has not contacted me at all which just pours salt in the wound. This company may be OK but the lack of reliable staff has hurt their reputation and I won't recommend them to people I know. read more

Anyone who has ever moved knows that it is the least favorite thing to do in the whole world! Well after living in the home my husband's family had occupied for 40+ years, it was time to move. As much as I was looking forward to moving into our new home, I so dreaded the packing and preparation leading up to it. Well let me tell you that all my fears were for nothing! Since I'm somewhat of a packrat in additional to the normal household items and furniture, and had several tubs and boxes containing years of memories, (stuff) and my daughter's elementary and high school memories (stuff) as well. Steve, Tim S. and Rob showed up and showed out! Those guys came in and went to work, loading everything we had into the truck including my husband's HUGE BBQ grill "Big Bertha". Not a single thing missed and much care was taken with our personal items. They even moved the upright deep freezer - completely stocked! That in itself was an awesome feat and they did it like nothing! Nothing broken, no nicks in the paint at either place, covers placed over our newly installed wood flooring - just awesome! This is my third move and at the end of each of the prior moves, I was so sore and worn out that all I could do is fall into a chair/bed and pray that I felt better the next day. Well not this time! Yes I was tired but I was able to participate in a girls night out event with friends. This was unimaginable to me. I agreed t the event thinking, "why did I do that, knowing how I'm going to feel after moving?" Thanks to the tireless efforts of Steve, Tim S. and Rob from Windy City Movers Girls Night was a Go for me! I had read the reviews prior to calling them to schedule the move and shared one of them with my husband about how one of the teams had to carry another client's belongings up 11 (yes, count 'em, Eleven) flights of stairs because the both of the elevators were out of service. We joked that that's the crew we wanted, well we got our wish! I can't say enough how pleased we are with Windy City Movers. They are meticulously careful and take great pride in doing a flawless job. Oh and I would be remiss to mention that their pricing is very competitive...they were actually less than most of the places i checked with! Thanks Windy City for making my move stress free and flawless!!! If we ever (God forbid) have to move again, this will be the company that I call - hands down they are the BEST! Here's the facts: 3 Bedroom, about 1 decent size truckload Previous move with 2 Men & a Truck resulted in broken furniture, severely damaged walls, and took about 12 hours. Total cost was over $1k or about 200% of their quote. 2 years later moved again with Windy City Movers. Place was packed up in 3 hours, unloaded and completely finished in another 2 hours, and nothing was broken or damaged. Total cost was $900, no quote was provided given we all know quotes from movers are worthless. In the end, the crew at Windy City were professional movers, they knew how to position furniture to make it in tight corners. Other companies seem to hire minimum wage college kids or worse, which result in a waste of your time and money. read more

Windy City handled my boyfriend and I during our move. Now when I say my boyfriend has a lot of stuff - I mean it. Lots of expensive art, furniture, etc. One piece of art alone weighs about 400 pounds (we told them about this prior to the move). We had three movers: Dave, Bill, and Pat. These guys were AMAZING. By the time they were done I felt like I knew them. They were extremely strong, fast, personable, and funny. Ours was a longer move which was done in record time. Nothing was damaged or broken, and these guys really busted their ass to ensure we had a quick and painless move. Cannot recommend them enough. This was the 2nd time I used them, and my boyfriend hired them based on my recommendation. Although I hope to not move again for a long time, if I do I will use Windy City again. I am not sure how this company received great rating, but I can say the experience with them was the worst and if you want a smooth move look for another company. Below are some bullet points of what we experienced. -I was told they could not move a 4 bedroom house in one day. -I asked for assistance with packing the house prior to the move. I ended up packing everything and they only had the garage left, they refused to pack the garage -Carl made me prepare the portable hoop for a move even though that is what they were hired for -refused to break down the trampoline when we asked for this service ahead of time -initially said they would move everything on the two floors of the house one day and the garage/basement the next day, instead they moved beds and clothes only one day and left the couches and TVs at the old house. Refused to bring a couch over when I asked -stopped working at 2:15 the first day when I gave them a paid lunch break and they started at 8:15/8:30 -took a paid lunch break on the second day when I did not offer to pay them for lunch the second day because of the lack of progress the first day. They charged me for the lunch break they took. -Manager Ed was of no helped when I called in and complained that one of the workers refused to wear a mask and another worker said he had flu like symptoms. Ed did not apologize for the inconvenience. -Was charged well over the estimate cost when Ed did a walk through weeks before the move. Cost went up because the crew was not great. The second day they sent Mike, he was good. -Carl was really lazy and refused/avoided doing the basics -left several things at the old house -worst experience ever and no discounts for their screw ups.
