For years now, the kitchen has substituted rice for ramen for me because I have gluten intolerance. I have always asked respectfully, explained why, and said thank you, every single time. Tonight my husband and I walked down to Strangebird for dinner, ordered drinks and dinner, and I had *just* said to my husband that Strangebird has come to feel like a second home. Then the server came out and told us that the chef has decided they will no longer permit any modifications, including those that meet dietary needs. We were out on the quiet patio surrounded by other customers, so on top of being totally blindsided, it was actually pretty embarrassing, too. Folks, let me tell you how much I wish I could just eat the ramen noodles like everybody else. So much food that I love (and in some cases spent years learning to make myself) went out the window forever when my body stopped being able to handle wheat. So 25 min went by we went back in and noticed our name was crossed off, she looked at us and said she went to look for us and I reminded her that she specifically said to check back with her in thirty minutes, she seemed confused and then said she'd come get us again in another 20 min ... when I asked her name she paused and I asked again then she gave it. Then I asked for her managers name and she paused longer this time. Aubrey seemed to be a bit overwhelmed and obviously didn't communicate especially when asked specifically about the wait. As the front of the house who see the customers first before being seated I feel that a hostess needs to be a little more comfortable with talking to patrons and being a little more descriptive and direct when asked specific questions about the wait. Lack of communication on her part definitely made the experience very disappointing. Please do better to ASSIST in your duties as a front of house hostess.
