I thought, when I saw McCormick & Shmicks boldly declare that they ran this joint, it would be decent. Some museum food is. The Mac and cheese is supposedly Beecher's. It was mushy and watery. Cold burger with refrigerated slices of cheese, unmelted, is your cheeseburger? I asked if they could melt the cheese. The teen Ramsey shoved the whole thing, lettuce and all, into the microwave. We came to Wings Café for lunch on an admittedly busy day between Christmas and New Year's. The museum was packed with families with little kids, including our own family. The menu is enticing as it has options that sound nicer than the usual chicken-strips-and-fries cafeteria aimed at kids. We ordered three kids' meals and several adult options. We picked up our order and once we got back to the table, realized that the hamburger was literally two pieces of bread and a patty of meat. We had to go back to ask for the toppings. Lettuce, tomato, onion were provided in a separate container. One person got a salad, and realized there wasn't dressing, and had to get up to go ask for it, as well as utensils to eat with. We started to dig in, only to realize that the kids' "meal" were only a main course, and we hadn't been provided with the drink and chips/fruit the meal is supposed to come with. So we got up yet again and had to go ask for that. It was a further conversation to explain that we had in fact purchased THREE meals, and needed three drinks and three bags of chips, not just one. I realize the place was busy. It may be that the staff was new and insufficiently trained. But I expect them to know that if you order a meal, all promised parts of the meal should be delivered. I expect them to know that if you order a hamburger, you shouldn't have to make a special request for lettuce and tomato. I expect that if you order a salad, they should realize you need a fork to go along with. The food was okay, but nothing special. It appears they are more of a grab-and-go style of place, with nothing being cooked on site. I think I'll try packing a lunch next time and eating in the family area near the kids play zone next time. read more

I have been here a couple of times a year for over a decade and I have never had the disappointing experience others seem to have. It gets super busy during events but the staff does a great job keeping up. Everyone working here today was cheerful and friendly, and there were at least 2 people out among the tables keeping things clean. Today I got the pulled pork sandwich and my husband got the cheeseburger. All the fixings for the cheeseburger were fresh and on the side so he could build the perfect burger for his tastes. I was very happy with the pulled pork, it was the right combination of sweet, spicy and smoky. In the past I have had the Caesar salad and the dressing is very good. If you're looking for fancy go somewhere else. If you're looking for a good meal without leaving the museum give Wings a try. read more

We had a cheeseburger, and a pulled pork "bao". The cheeseburger came "naked", with a container of all the toppings so that you can make any kind of burger. And it was excellent. TL:DR - Sit by windows for a good view. Typical street food but more expensive. Try to sit by the windows. You get a nice table with some maps, pins, and designs on it. The back of chairs also has an image of a plane on it. As you look out the window, every so often you can see a plane take off or land. The food seems like typical food like hotdogs soda chips. At first, this seems like an appropriately themed cafeteria with aviation stuff on the walls and tables, and that's about where the fun ends. Otherwise, welcome back to middle school, complete with dirty tables, sticky floors, and pre-packaged and reheated frozen delights. I paid six bucks for a do-it-yourself loaded baked potato with little tubs of sour cream, shredded cheese, and bacon. The bacon and cheese were a bit icy (just pulled out of the fridge) and the potato itself was lukewarm. The net result after combining all the ingredients was a cold potato. The buffalo wings were barely warm, the pulled pork sandwich was unevenly heated (microwaved), the coleslaw was very bland (get better slaw at KFC), and the pita was soggy and gross on the bottom with a big hunk of plastic wrap stuck to it. I saw a "chef" wheel in a large pallet of sealed plastic bowls of salad that you would find in the grocery store. You're basically paying fresh-food prices for vending machine/frozen food. The employees working here feel dead inside, especially in contrast to the friendliness and positive attitudes the employees at the rest of the museum have. I wonder if it's a rotation thing and the cafe is the crap job everyone hates to do when it's their turn. Given the size of the museum, it's sad to see the only food place has pretty horrible food. We got 3 sandwiches that were cold, overpriced and loaded with mayo. A small bottle of water is $3. The bun is instantly soggy from the weight of what tasted like cheap canned chili, making it impossible to pick it up and eat traditionally like how a hot dog would be eaten. We had to knife and fork our chili dogs. The dog itself tastes like a cheap hot dog and is nothing special. Probably best to bring your own snacks or fine elsewhere. Not bad! It's not common to see a lot of museums have a full fledged food program but I hear that Wings Cafe is run by McCormick and Shmicks. They also cater their events for large scale parties in the space which makes sense because you don't get a crummy old hot dog or a pre-made sandwich here, you get some pretty thoughtful menu items like soups and salads and so on. Lots to choose from, actually. I had a cup of hot tea (one flavor of about 5 total) and also some chili. The cup of chili was really good but the water for the tea was so hot I had to wait at least 10 mins to drink it. Not being able to drink/eat in the exhibit halls, I ended up stuck in the restaurant area a while longer than expected because it took so long for the water to cool down. I couldn't even hold the paper cup for a minute there. Ouch! But I suppose hot tea is better than lukewarm tea, after all. Some of the tables were a little dirty and needed some wiping down between visitors but other than that this is a totally fine place to grab a bite between visiting exhibits. read more

Quite possibly the worst Museum Cafe we've ever encountered, and we've eaten at museum food vendors in Athens, Rome, Spain, Bogota, Lima, Cusco, and many US cities including all of the various Smithsonian museums in DC. The roast beef on ciabatta was horrific, soggy, and the roll was served cold. The entire sandwich looked like it had been prepared in a sweat shop factory, put into refrigeration, and served the next day. Complete waste of $9.25 and the accompanying bag of chips was stale. The other person with me had the Blackbird (roast beef sandwich on cibatta bread). Refill of soda is limited to one per purchase but that seems to be an on your honor system. eating at wing's café is like going back to your old high school cafeteria, except nothing that was nice is still nice. if wings café is full and you can't find a table, you may take the top slice of bread off of your sandwich and use its hard surface to balance your meal. all of the food at wing's café has a cute aviation name, like "the red baron" or the "b-52 bomber". this adds an interesting new spin to crunching your burger if you ponder that the texture could have been inspired by wartime rations. i would have asked, but the staff didn't look like they wanted to talk to anyone. read more
