Our senior dog was having 10-second episodes (two or three a day for two days) of SIGNIFICANT pain Regular vet. center , used for years didn't have avail appointment for weeks (often the case), but said we could come in for urgent care visit (starting at $250). A Dr. is avail for urgent/emergencies, but nothing else despite being long-time customers. Winnetka Animal Clinic had next day appts, did blood work, labs & gave prescription for only a bit more than the urgent care minimum of previous vet. read more

We have been impressed with the level of care and also care options afforded to us - never upselling us but also never compromising care for our dog. I have been coming into Winnetka Animal Clinic for years and have always left happy. The entire staff is so kind and helpful and super gentle with my cats. Dr. Smollin is the best vet I've ever been to and cannot recommend him enough. I know my cats are in the best hands here. This place is way more affordable than I lot of other local vets and I'm never pushed to do more than necessary. My dog was diagnosed with kidney disease (I took him to an emergency vet clinic where they did bloodwork). Last year in January he got really sick (his kidney values had worsened) and I had to take him to the same emergency clinic because Dr. Smollin was booked. The emergency vet clinic suggested I euthanize my dog but I refused to give up so easily. The next day I took my dog back to Winnetka Animal Clinic and Dr. Smollin put miles on a medication regimen which included subcutaneous fluids daily. He gave me the best advice: "just take it one day at a time". And we did. My sweet Miles passed away on 05/10/2025. Almost 1.5 years after being diagnosed with kidney failure. I know i wouldn't have enjoyed that extra time with him if it weren't for the love the entire staff at Winnetka Animal Clinic gave him. They are so amazing. I love them all so much. read more

First of all, I'm only speaking based on my experience I grew up around this area and heard great things about this, vet don't get me wrong. He's an amazing guy. First few visits went great. Decided to take my cat because he started acting very weird and was huffing in a very weird way when I took him in I was told that it was due to his heart murmur, and that I should take him to a cardiologist because my cat was dying, ended up, taking him to a cardiologist. The specialist connected him to a heart machine and told me that there was nothing wrong with his heart that it was all allergies and asthma ended up paying $1800 for the specialist to tell me this. I was very disappointed as the vet at this place told me my cat was dying to rush to take him to a specialist, which I did. I made an appointment the following day, very disappointed and never will come back here due to the care, they gave my cat my baby is fine and doing well and taking his meds and nothing wrong with him besides his asthma. disappointed in the fact that I rushed him to a specialist and paid $1800 just to be told that. on top of it, I had to drive an hour and a half somewhere else to be able to get him seen ASAP. read more

This place mis-diagnosed my dog and then when I brought my dog back because she was still sick, they tried to charge me twice when they couldn't diagnose her. Then when I called and tried to explain to them what I was concerned about they hung up on me. Rude as can be. If I could give a 0-star rating, I would. I brought my dog in for a scratch on her eye. I believe when they had her in a back room (without permitting me to be there), they dropped her on her head. Why? Because her personality went from friendly and outgoing to being fearful of her environment. She won't let me or anyone else touch her now. She's lethargic and confused. When I tried to find out what happened on a phone call, I was responded to with hostility from Dr. Smollen's wife. I feel that they ruined my little dog, refused to take responsibility. I left a review 6 years ago about doctor Smollin and his staff and I'm leaving another review because they are absolutely amazing. I had to put my beautiful boy down after a long battle with a heart condition.Doctor Smollin did everything to try and keep my little guy around longer, but unfortunately there was nothing we could do. Doctor Smollin was so kind and understanding and explained how the procedure to humanely euthanize my little guy would go. Once it was done they gave me time to process and spend time in the room alone with him, which I'm so grateful for. Great, caring and honest vet. I've been to several other vets and many of them just don't have the nurturing bed side manner and care that the staff here has. They are often busy with emergency and ringing phones but still manage to be friendly and helpful. Working at a vet's clinic isn't an easy job some people come in upset about prices, about their pet's results and sometimes their pet is scared and acting out. I've noticed some people complain simply because they want personal coddling for free but that simply is not realistic especially in this city. This place provides good service for fair prices. I've seen them handle rude customers with matter of fact grace. Just brought my girl in for her x-ray with her comfy bed so she doesn't have to lay on anything metal table waiting to be seen. This place goes out of its way to ensure that your appointment will never start at the scheduled time and instead will always involve at the very least half an hour of waiting in a room for no reason at all. Even if you schedule your appointment first thing in the morning, that won't matter. I guess they quadruple-book just so that they can make absolutely sure that they start their day already with a built-in delay. We have been to this dive twice, and didn't hang around long enough to actually see a vet either time. Our time is way too valuable for this nonsense. They were full up with appointment for over a week...My dog had kennel cough and was coughing and hacking like a three pack a day cigarette smoker... I went online to Chewy.com to order some Amoxicillin antibiotic to resolve the kennel cough....Chewy then contacted Winnetka Animal Clinic to approve my order AND Winnetka Animal Clinic refused to approve the Amoxicillin...saying I had to see the doctor BUT they have No openings for over a week...I called Winnetka Animal Clinic and mentioned to the young lady that I was speaking with that Amoxicillin is not a dangerous drug that it is an antibiotic and would speed his recovery from the Kennel Cough he is suffering with...Winnetka Animal Clinic REFUSED my request! read more

Reading other reviews , it seems like there's a cadence of bad customer service and denied medication requests. I knew when I adopted Buster that he was going to need extensive dental work and Dr. Smollin was upfront about the cost. Turns out that my little guy needed 17 teeth extracted. It's been three days and he is starting to feel better and is acting like a Sheltie again. When I called, they fortunately had a same-day cancellation and I was able to take our pet in. On the phone, the admin was nice and friendly sounding. Upon arrival, they were also nice. I wasn't able to go inside due to COVID regulations, which is fine, and they came out and handled everything as usual (paperwork & explanation). They took my pet in for the doctor to check. Doctor called and patiently, professionally, and with a calm/soothing tone, explained everything. Following that, the assistant came out to take payment and provide medication with instructions. Hi Marc, I appreciate your response, but you didn't actually address any of my questions nor respond to anything I said. Instead, you quoted the Veterinary Medical Board (VBM), Section 2032.1(a), which was never in debate (indeed, in my original review I wrote: "When I brought my cat in, they charged me for a physical (which I knew they were going to do, as they explained in advance that they couldn't administer any treatment without first providing a physical)." I never had any problem with being charged for a physical as a new patient, nor did I ever express any issues with that. So, I'm not sure why you felt the need to write that, except that it is in keeping with your demonstrated policy of ignoring information provided by patients/customers. Speaking of which, you never addressed my honest and straightforward question, which I'll re-write here for your convenience: "They said they couldn't provide vaccines because she was immunocompromised, which they knew because of the PE. That makes perfect sense, but why didn't you tell me that when I made the appointment?" One thing you did do in your response was attribute projection to my review, writing: "In your disappointment with the medical outcome of your visit, you now project your behavior onto our staff." How did I project my behavior onto your staff? It's not like I hung up on them and then said they hung up on me; they just hung up on me. I also didn't lie to them and then said they lied to me; they just lied to me. I'm sorry that the reality of the situation doesn't make your office look very good, but when that's the case it's probably best practice to change the way you're acting rather than saying that others are projecting. I look forward to your reply, in which I hope you can answer my questions, which I'll write out concisely here for ease of response: 1. Why didn't you tell me that my cat couldn't receive vaccines in advance when I made my appointment, given that you already had received notice from the ER that she was immunocompromised? 2. Why did your office lie and say that they hadn't received notice about my cat's condition in advance of my visit when in fact you had received it 9 days prior? 3. In what way did I project my behavior onto your staff? I hope for an honest exchange of information, and not an irrelevant quote from the VBM or a thinly veiled insult/claim of projection like you sent last time. PS: This exchange is purely for the benefit of yelp users (and an attempt to get an honest answer from a question dodger), I've already happily moved onto a more affordable vet with ample parking and who allows owners to accompany their pets during office visits rather than wait in the parking lot. read more
