Came here for TGIF happy hour with a fellow Elite, on a whim. Another place that's been on my list : ) It's across from the Ensemble Theater. As I walked up to the place, with the metro rail on my left, I noticed the good-sized, enclosed patio with park bench style seating. This would be great for a nice day. Drinks- I attempted to order the Grapefruit Ranch Water, but they were out. So, instead, I went with the Spanish Smash. It was pretty tasty, almost mojito- esq without the heavy mint. The spirit was sherry, which I don't have much experience with, but enjoyed. Next, I had the Classic Shaken Daquri. This was served fancy, in a coup glass. It was not like any daquri I have ever had. It was a smoother, more defined taste and frothy, I liked it. That spirit was Rum. Their happy hour ends at 5p, too bad, unsure what crowd they are trying to appeal to with those hours. Drinks were $7 bucks each on HH. Food - I had the chargrilled oysters, which I thought was on the HH menu, but I guess not, at $16 bucks. It comes with 4 oysters and 2 pieces of nicely browned bread. Parking - There is a garage up the block a little, not too far out the way, but it's a paid lot. Few other options for street parking, except the rail. This option isn't always convenient for folks coming from work outside of midtown. For some reason, this bar seemed out of place in comparison to the rest of the neighborhood. DO NOT GET THE VIETNAMESE GRITS. I should've known better than to expect a flavorful vietnamese broth with the grits as advertised... the broth was so bad lol However everything else was great! My best friend and I had a day/afternoon date and Winnie's was our second stop. Upon entering I noticed the Miracle at Winnie's pop up for Christmas- very very holiday vibey. The place was packed but we were lucky enough to get two seats at the bar since a few people were leaving. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip and gumbo. The dip was delicious, can't speak on the gumbo. We also ordered two drinks the Christmapolitan and the Holiday Spiked Chai. The chai was my drink and I was not a fan. The Christmapolitan was really good and light, very refreshing. The drinks are served in cool Christmas drinkware, and were available for purchase. The service was fast and friendly. This place has been on my radar for a while- for the Christmas vibe and for the sandwiches which I've heard a lot about. Ambience 5/5: Winnie's is very much in the holiday spirit- the decor, the waitstaff, the drinks, etc. Food 2/5: The holiday drinks are $17 each- no matter what. The drinks are okay, nothing that I would crave, but they definitely give you the holiday feel. The shrimp poboy and French dip sandwiches were so basic! I was disappointed because I'd been hearing a lot of hype about them. Service 3/5: We had arrived at 7 PM to try and beat the crowds as they get pretty packed on holiday weekends. The host was friendly and got us a table within 15 minutes. Our waitress forgot to put in the order for some of our drinks so drinks took 30 minutes to arrive. The restaurant was decked out and it looked amazing. We had already eaten and only got light bites to eat - we mostly came to drink. The drinks were good but I felt they were a bit overpriced, especially for what you got. I got a mulled cider in the cute Trex mug but he got a teeny, tiny cup that was like $15. We got holiday-themed shots and they were terrible. They tasted like alcohol-flavored Robitussin... Heard this was a must visit bar for Christmas time. It's a fairly large place with lots of seating but you must check-in with the host and be seated. Not a free-roaming kind of place. I believe it's more of a restaurant than a typical bar. This is one of those "miracle" brand bars, so they have the holiday mugs you can buy. They aren't cheap, but they're cool. I brought home the Santa T-Rex! Unless you're walking or riding a bike, you'll need to park in the large attached parking garage. Free parking up to 15 mins and $3.50 up to an hour. read more

I've visited Winnie's 3 times now and have received similar level service all 3 times. I've been 2x during their "Miracle" pop-up and once during regular service. I know it's still tough times in the food service industry, so I try to be more forgiving. There are some good qualities about Winnie's but also some persistent gaps that I've observed. The place itself is cute, especially with the "Miracle" pop-up Christmas decor. There's indoor seating and a tented patio (but no space heaters). The paid parking garage is the easiest access, but you can also find street parking. The food is OK... the menu is mostly sandwiches, handhelds, and southern-comfort-inspired casual dishes. I've tried their burger, crunch wrap supreme, and thanksgiving leftover sandwich. The food prices are mostly reasonable, but the drink prices are SO expensive. All of the Miracle cocktails are $16 each, including the little baby mugs of mulled wine and egg nog. One of the servers disclosed to me that even the tiki-style and spritz cocktails are pre-batched. For $16 each - the same price as the most expensive cocktail bars in the city - I would expect to have a more fresh cocktail experience... even a garnish & splash of fresh bubbles would be nice. My Tipsy Elves cocktail was good... but idk if it was $16-quality-worth-good. In the end, I paid $80 for 1 appetizer, 1 sandwich, and 2 drinks. Now, I could overlook overpriced drinks for a prime, downtown location with decorations... if it weren't for the low-quality service I've received at Winnie's. On my most recent visit, my party did not receive our food for over 50 minutes, and even then, we did not receive all of it. The entrees arrived before the appetizers and one person's food was forgotten entirely. I would say that everyone had received their food after about 60-70 minutes at the table. About 20 minutes after we got our food, the host came over to tell us that our 90-minute time limit at the table had expired... basically telling us to leave, even though it was 9:00pm on a Wednesday and there were 2 empty tables next to us. I think a 90-minute time limit for guests is completely reasonable -- if the restaurant does their part to provide timely service. Overall, I have been unimpressed by the mediocre service and food quality that does not live up to the steep prices charged at Winnie's. read more

Happy hour includes their cocktails for $5 before 5 pm. We got the hand grenade Collins, old fashioned, and the classic shaken daiquiri. All the drinks were really good! My favorites were the hand Grenade Collins and the old fashioned. For food to munch on-we got the pimento queso and added crawfish tails and the peacemaker poboy-both were excellent!!! It's def worth adding the crawfish tails. We also asked for more chips and they were kind enough to bring more out. We made a reservation for inside, but the outside was not forgotten about with plenty of lights. - Easy paid parking in the Mid Main Garage. - Service was ok. Got the job done, but nobody really seemed to be fully in the holiday spirit. That's the whole reason customers are coming in! For a 20% gratuity on top of the steep prices for small drinks, would like to see a little more energy. This place is so cute! A friend of mine was in town so we came here for drinks. It was a really nice day, so we sat outside. The outside area is nice, super cute, but the flies were absolutely ridiculous. No matter where people were sitting; towards the front by the street, right by the door, or in the corner where we sat, flies were everywhere. The drinks were really good. The fries and queso with crawfish were pretty good too. The waitress felt so bad about the flies, she brought us a shot at one point during our visit, which was really nice. Customer service was perfect; she had great suggestions, explained the menu (the format is a bit confusing), and never let our drinks get empty. The Peach Bourbon Iced Tea and the Hemingway Daiquiri (both frozens) are perfect! The Hand Grenade Collins is very tasty and cute too. I would definitely go back to Winnie's. I'd love to try some of the other food and drinks on the menu. The indoor and bar area aren't that big, but it's still a pretty cool place. Bathrooms are super clean. Winnie's is a warm cozy neighborhood bar and restaurant. My wife and I split the gumbo, which was very good, probably is the best in Houston. My wife had the chicken fried steak smothered in gumbo which was tasty. It is fried in a corn meal batter which is a different twist. I had the seafood mountain and the shrimp, catfish, and fries were great. Catfish was a large filet and was crispy on the outside and moist inside! Graham, the owner waited on us and he is very nice and friendly and has a fascinating story. Parking is limited but a pay garage is available with easy in and out. It was very busy but managed to find seating at the bar. Everyone around (patrons) were in good spirits and friendly. Liz our bartender was courteous, fun and attentive. Came here for the Sunday Drag Brunch as a group. Staff here is attentive and friendly, food and drinks come out fast, even with the show and everything going on. Highly recommend the fried pickles, the coating is light and the pickles are crispy. The Drag Show was amazing, super fun and engaging.
