Wintzell's Oyster House 605 Dauphin St, Mobile, AL Visited: April 13, 2026 We stopped into Wintzell's while in Mobile and had a really solid experience overall--highlighted by what may have been the best Gulf oysters I've ever had. We ordered: * 1/2 dozen raw oysters - $12.99 * Fried green tomatoes - $10.99 * Cup of gumbo - $6.99 * Fried oyster po'boy - $16.99 * Total with tax: $52.76 Let's start with the star of the show: the raw oysters. These were absolutely outstanding--plump, large, and packed with that high salinity you want from Gulf oysters. Fresh, clean, and just about perfect. Easily the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, the rest of the food didn't quite rise to that level. The gumbo was below average--lacking depth and richness. The fried green tomatoes were decent, nothing special, and the fried okra (assuming that's what you meant) was pretty middle-of-the-road. The fried oyster po'boy had a lot of potential. The oysters themselves were fried perfectly--crispy on the outside, tender inside--but the bread just didn't deliver. For a po'boy, that French bread is critical, and when it misses, the whole sandwich suffers. On the plus side, the service was good--friendly and attentive--and the location is great, right in a nice part of downtown Mobile. Bottom line: Come here for the oysters--they're top-tier. The rest of the menu is hit or miss, but overall it's still worth a visit, especially if you're craving some of the best raw oysters around. read more

Service was quick and we had no wait time for being seated. Very pleased with our food and service. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. The food was hot, fresh and seasoned well. Parking was difficult as the parking lot they have available was full. I ended up circling the area for a few minutes then finally found street parking. Consistently good service and food. On a Thursday at 6:00 ish, the place was not very busy and fairly quiet. We were seated right away and our waitress Nicole was over to the table quickly to take our drink order. She did a great job while we were there. We ordered beer and wine with a cup of gumbo to start. The gumbo is very good here and we seem to always start with a cup. Next, she had the blackened shrimp salad, I had the red beans and rice with blacked chicken and sausage and a side of hush puppies. She enjoyed her salad, the shrimp were a little underspiced, but good nonetheless. My red beans and rice was perfect, the chicken was juicy, blackened perfectly, the sausage tasty and the hush puppies, a perfect fry crispy outside and moist inside. A meal I will order again. To finish up. we shared ;) a scoop of Cammie's old dutch vanilla ice cream, so so good. We will of course be back as this place is on our rotation. read more

We had a baby shower for our co-worker here recently. We called in advance and the manager and staff were amazing. Angela our waitress made sure we were taken care. The food and the service were excellent with amazing comfortable ambiance. The manager Colton was super cool and nice. Perfect room for a party. I've been there before but not in a while. Visited Sunday. Walk in, hostess, no greeting nor smile ! She literally just stares until I say party of two. With no smile she says "It's gone be a few minutes. That was it. Of course we opted for the oyster bar to avoid her again. This was around 5pm on a Sunday. Wintzell's she should not be a hostess if we were not hungry we would have turned around immediately. Me and my husband saw this place on Google and it had some good reviews and some not so good, but the pictures looked amazing online so we decided that we wanted to try it. Sadly to say we were very disappointed, our waitress was amazing, but the food was very plane no type of seasoning whatsoever my husband took one bite of his food and immediately didn't want anymore. I ordered char grilled oysters, which were not even chargrilled. They tasted like they were boiled and had cheese thrown on them with barely any shrimp on top. My grits came back cold,broccoli was cold my daughter's grilled cheese was burnt. Overall, we will not be back! read more

We chose to dine here two nights in a row because the food is exceptional and the service we received with our waitress and staff was beyond exceptional!!! Waiting on my to go order I placed at the hostess stand. Very pleasant young lady. IT's potentially dinner time 7:33pm on Saturday in the port city. And the restaurant isn't that busy. I have a taste for an Shrimp Poboy! Where else but Wintzell. I decided to grab a cold Heineken at the bar while I wait. Mind you I stood for awhile hoping the bartender would clean the bar where two customers just left. Noooooo. She eventually removed the dirty dishes, but never wiped the bar where I eventually sat down. I guess it's a Mobile thing. I was not impressed with anything. I came in for lunch for some shrimp and oysters. I had the JO Platter, fried shrimp, oysters, fish, with a side of fried okra. A companion and myself went to enjoy food and drinks. Friday Jan.16 at 4 for happy hour. We went to the bar and set down. The bar had about eight people at the time. all seem to have been there well ahead of us. After about four minutes we were ask by the attending attendant, we were giving our drinks. That seem to have ended our service from Ms. N. she seem to float around to everyone but us, we were waited as we listen to her complain to another employee about a co-worker. I tried to get her to look at me by saying excuse me, finally she acknowledge me after the waitress she was talking to left. I had to ask can we have a menu and another beer. About five minutes later after she finish talking to some lady that had cookies at the bar she gave me a beer, turned and walk away. Then we had to wait for another ten minutes for her not to be talking to others casual conversations before I was able once again to have her see we was waiting to order. She was giving us the impression that our service was not a thing of matter to her. I assume that the man that ask us were things good was a manger. I told him we seem to be overlooked. I like going there, we have been there before and had a wonderful and professional bartender, she was quick and had everyone so it seems at the bar giving time and service. But for Ms. N. she made us feel unwelcome. Our money spends just like the other people at the bar. All we wanted and really deserve is nothing more but to be treated fairly and respectably. The seafood never disappoints, low country boil with big peel and eat shrimp, potatoes, corn on the cob and sausage. Just like you would do it at home. Cheeseburger also did not disappoint, but the seafood pasta was the highlight. Service was excellent and fast. Tuesday evening and the place was not packed, but comfortable. read more

I did a bit of a Third Coast tour for my birthday and this was my first stop. I was really sleep on Mobile as a city but this place is amazing. I'd been to another location of Wyntzell's before so I was familiar with the restaurant. To start off I ordered some blue crab claws and chargrilled oysters. Both of these appetizers were good but the blue crab claws were really something special. The claws were meaty and I loved the butter sauce. I also has the fried green tomatoes. All three appetizers were very good. For dessert, I had the key lime pie. It didn't have as much flavor as what I'm used to but it was still pretty good. I understand. This place has been around forever, but I have to tell you I was not impressed with the airport Boulevard location. Although the greeters were friendly, and the bartender was nice, I was just disappointed in the food. I sat up at the bar and ordered their oyster combo, which is four oysters of their Rockefeller, Bienville and the chargrilled for a total of 12 oysters. Not what the reviews say on yelp that indicates 16 oysters. But honestly, I'm glad it was only 12. The oysters were just not firm and plump. They were soft and mealy tasting. And even though they were covered up with spinach on one and cheese on the other and jalapeños and bacon on the other, they were just pretty nasty. I also ordered a loaded baked potato and thank goodness I did. I may have caught them on a bad night, it wasn't busy, although a large group of guys came in so the waiters pulled all of these tables together, screeching them on the ground annoyingly. For a place that has been around decades I just would've expected the food to be better. And maybe it is better at the original location on dauphin Street downtown. read more
