In town for an OTS Graduation at Maxwell Air Force Base and stayed at the Renaissance at Montgomery Hotel & Spa and was pleasantly pleased to see an Oyster Bar attached to the hotel. Needless to say with our recent run on Oyster Bars knew we had to stop in Fresh off the road we worked up an appetite and got right to it. We ordered some Patron doubles, which honestly were crazy over priced at $18 a shot, some chargrilled oysters, fried green tomatoes, crab cakes, gumbo, and bienville oysters just so we could have a sampler of multiple items To get right to the point, the chargrilled oysters which were freshly shucked or smothered with butter and cheese and absolute money! The Bienville were covered with shrimp had a healthy amount of crab meat and a creamy Parmesan sauce that were good but something about char-grilled Flavor that made these take a back seat The fried green tomatoes were very crisp on the outside and delicious texture on the inside but the signature crawfish sauce I can't put my finger on it but it was absolutely amazing The crab cakes were no lie 99% crab with next to no filler which is rare nowadays and the remoulade sauce was totally made in house And then finally the gumbo which was highly recommended due to all the achievements it's one, had the right balance of heat spice shrimp, crawfish, crab meat and, okra is a must try! The po-boy fish sandwich was a healthy sized fillet and you could tell was fried to perfection All in all I feel this was a great experience just touching down in Alabama, the only thing that made us laugh was we tried all this hot food when it was 102° outside. So disappointed - had great expectations after having visited the Wintzell's down on the coast. Had 5:30pm reservations. Got there at 5:25pm and there were at least 15 people at the hostess stand. Hostess seemed lost....would struggle to get the ext person seated and didn't ask if anyone had reservations until about 5:40pm. When she did about 12 people raised their hands....we all had 5:30pm ones. Got seated around 5:45pm; waitress was prompt and friendly - she was the only highlight. Got our appetizer with our dinner that came out at three different moments about 10min apart. We didn't get our food until about 6:45pm....horribly long wait. Good was not very good; certainly not worth what we paid. My chicken bienville was tasteless and the chicken tough and chewy. The side of fried okra and sweet potato fries were good though! 1 Star I've eaten here every time I come to town and have always had a great experience, but this visit was completely different. The manager loudly berated a cook for several minutes, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere for everyone. My tuna was so overcooked it was more like jerky than tuna. When I told them I wasn't happy with it, the only person who offered to have it remade was my server, whom I still tipped. The manager's response was, "This is the way we cook it here. You should ask for it raw." Instead of trying to make things right, the manager called the police when I disputed paying for the meal. In my opinion, this kind of management is probably why there were only two people eating in the restaurant on a Sunday night. Strong but oddly flavorless, almost indistinguishable from unsweetened. We even confirmed it was supposed to be sweet. Gumbo - 9/10 Outstanding. Made with okra rather than filé, packed with shrimp, perfectly seasoned, and served piping hot. As a gumbo lover and amateur chef, this was on par with homemade. Heidi and Celeste were absolutely incredible. They made up for what I consider a 3/5 for the food. They were extremely knowledgeable and served us so well. With high expectations, I can say the oysters Bienville and the loaded bread pudding are easily the best I've ever eaten. The rest of the food ( rest of the oyster sampler, gumbo ( crunchy crispy rice that almost broke my tooth, roux has too much flour so it's too thick) red fish plate ( served over rice that was old nothing on the plate was fresh ( scary when eating fish)) I could tell the fried green tomatoes are possibly not made in house so that was a let down I was hoping for a good housemade southern meal. I've never seen such a dysfunctional and lethargic staff. Well staffed, mostly empty and the staff walks around joking and laughing with each other while ignoring guests. There was one man working the floor who was on point. Everyone else clearly didn't care and they made sure you knew they didn't care. 25 minutes to be seated, 10 minutes to be greeted by a server, 10 minutes to get drinks. Once the food came out, it was stellar. I've been eating at Wintzell's locations well over 50 years and I've never had anything better than what we were served but the front of house was just awful. Multiple groups got up and left without being seated or gave up after being seated when no server came to the table. Debbie, it was Saturday, April 4th. We arrived around 8:10. You had 4 servers, a hostess and less than ten tables, no large groups and only one takeout. We had food before we got silverware, drinks never got refilled, nobody checked on the table before or after we were served. The server didn't try to upsell or push apps. Again, the food was perfect. A family of three sat at the bar and it took over ten minutes for them to be greeted. A four top, five top and a couple left without being seated. A two top left 10 minutes after being seated when nobody came to the table. It's been a while since we've been here and we were attending a concert at the MPAC. Arrived at 5:30PM. Put our name on the waitlist. Four in our party and seated by 6:00, 6:15 drink order was finally taken. The young lady waiting our table was struggling with the hand held order machine and wasn't sure what was available to drink. We decided due to the struggle to go ahead and put in food orders ( concert ) 7:30. Zero stars for that customer experience! I really was hoping to refrain from writing a review for Wintzell's in Montgomery, AL until I had another favorable visit. Unfortunately, on Saturday, February 21, 2026 around 2 PM a friend and I had planned a girls day out luncheon. We wanted seafood so we decided to go to Wintzell's. I indicated to her that I had promised the management at the restaurant in Greenville last month that I would give the one in MGM another chance, since we had been advised they were under new corporate management. Regretfully, their quality and service has not improved. The restaurant was severely understaffed, as it had been since the pandemic when their service, quality, and health dept scores began to decline. After waiting at the hostess station to be seated for several minutes we decided to sit at the crowded bar. The guy tending the bar (Cornelius) was being required to attend customers at the bar and seated in the restaurant at tables. He was friendly, polite, customer focused and oriented as he attempted to handle such unreasonable demand. We really felt sorry for him. My friend had already placed her food order prior to me arriving to meet her. She had ordered the Shrimp and Grits as described on the menu topped with crawfish sauce. We both have had that same menu item at Wintzell's in the past. When it came out it had an undesirable presentation and did not resemblance of shrimp and grits we've ordered at Wintzell's nor from any other seafood restaurants. About a teaspoon full of crawfish sauce with "Only One" small crawfish tail had been dropped in the middle of the huge bowl of grits! When she expressed her displease, the bar tender went to the back as requested to see about getting more crawfish sauce for the dish. He came with a look of disappointment to advise us that we'd have to pay for the side of sauce. All this time the clock still ticking however, no one had even requested to take my order. My friend requested to speak with the manager. A female came out who never identified herself (no name nor tile given). She was not cordial, unapologetic, lacked empathy, spoke in a very unfriendly, unpleasant and shrewd tone (condescending to a fault) with zero customer service skills. She was unwilling to resolve the issue. In fact, from a customer service management professional perspective - looking in, she had done a blame reversal, making the customer (my friend) feel as if it was "her fault for ordering the item as if she should have known it would have very little sauce with only one crawfish!" That female just turned with a jerk of her head and walked away from where we were seated at the bar without offering to resolve our concern in any manner nor offering a departing salutation and went to assist another customer. With such an unbecoming attitude that she had displayed, we really thought she might have been another waitress who had come to help out behind the bar. When Cornelius came back we asked him again about speaking with management. We were taken aback to learn that the female who had spoken to us was upper management level. One who had displayed zero professionalism, lacked interpersonal communications, empathy and integrity, with no customer service or customer relations mannerism and skills, holds the position with our local Wintzell's of area district manager? WOW! We refused to do business with those in authority over food handling with an attitude and behavior as that! Until there is a drastic change verbalized through word and mouth through the friends and family chain (social media) at the Montgomery Wintzell's, I will travel the miles for good food quality, taste and to get excellent, prompt customer service with smiles always at Wintzell's in Greenville AL! read more

I am a Midwesterner that loves me a good poor-boy when I can get it...in the south the best. I was actually here on work and had spent the week having oyster poor-boys around LA and AL...all of them very good until this decision was made! I asked for a spicy sauce which ALL poor-boys should have, but no...cocktail sauce or tarter sauce..OK, tartar sauce for which I was handed Ranch very quickly and easily...not Tartar Sauce, but Ranch...do you not know the difference or do you really not even have a Tartar Sauce? I stopped in to Wintzell's before heading to Selma for lunch. There were so many options but I chose the French toast and bacon. Hands down some of the best French toast with little to no syrup needed. Our waiter (I think his name was Leonard) provided great feedback when ordering and was such a pleasure to have. After my sister's graduation, our family of eight wanted to celebrate by having lunch together. We were excited to try this oyster bar, but when we walked in, it was smoky inside and smelled of a grease fire. We asked if we could sit outside and were told by the hostess that they couldn't seat us outside. The manager then approached us and said that they couldn't seat parties greater than four outside. It should be noted that the restaurant had opened only a half hour earlier and the place was empty. When we asked if we could sit four and four at two different tables, the manager said "your're still a party and we can't seat parties outside." I visited Wintzell's Oyster House twice on Jan 8, 2026. The first time was in the afternoon for late lunch, and the second time was in the evening in an attempt to order takeout. I didn't get the takeout because no one came around to take my order. First things first, the dine-in experience. I entered the restaurant at 2:52pm. There was no one at the front desk. A bartender at bar counter 1 saw me waiting but didn't respond to me until about two minutes later. Then a staffer led me to the dining area located by bar counter 2. I sat at the table next to an AC outlet so that I could charge my phone. Tyshun came with a menu. I asked for water. He asked if I wanted a lemon on it. I replied affirmatively. When he returned, I asked about the fish in the Half & Half entree. Tyshun said it was whitefish. I had whitefish before and liked it, so I ordered the Half & Half with sides of coleslaw and Cajun rice. It was served as one fish fillet, seven fried oysters and three hush puppies. I did not apply any sauce or dressing on them. The whitefish was good without any. So were the fried oysters. The cutlery did not include a knife. Tyshun provided one upon request. The TVs at the bar counters were not loud. I could heard the bartender conversing with a customer. If this had been my only visit, I'd given Wintzell's 4/5 for food, 4/5 for service, 5/5 for atmosphere, with an overall score of 5/5. Being pleased with Tyshun's service, I decided to come back later in the evening to order takeout. It was about 7pm. There was a staffer at the front desk. She told me to go to bar counter 2 to order takeout. I sat on the corner chair shown in the third photo. (FYI, the photo was taken at 3pm; the bartender was a different person at 7pm.) The bartender - a white guy (all the other staffers were black) with a buzz cut and a beard - was busy with a party of two sitting next to me. After a few minutes of waiting, he came to me. I told him that I wanted to order to go. He told me to wait a second and then left me unattended. After five minutes, no menu was provided and no order taken. I had enough and left without notifying anyone. Any other restaurant would have provided a menu right away. I didn't understand why the service for ordering takeouts was so shoddy. I hope it had nothing to do with how I showed up as I didn't appear as elegant as the party of two sitting next to me. Consequently, this impacted the overall score of the restaurant Furthermore, Wintzell's website does not take me to the menu. After I selected the location (Montgomery), the Montgomery page showed up but no link to its menu. I had to look up photos of the menu on Yelp. Tyshun was the only reason I didn't give Wintzell's one star. If only all the staffers were more like him. Until that happens, I do not recommend Wintzell's Oyster House. The next time I visit Montgomery, I will avoid this place. read more

This is a very popular place right downtown Montgomery. Very reasonably priced. Mac and cheese and collard greens were so good for my soul. It was the best collards I have ever had, well seasoned and just the right amount of heat. Snapper was so fresh and seasoned perfectly. Rather than addressing my concerns in a professional manner, she chose to intimidate me by dramatically taking her hair out of a ponytail. My server was missing in action for 20 minute. No one was paying any attention to the customers, too busy cutting up.
