A BIG shoutout to Myles and the team at Wise Guys Events for saving the day with my corporate event. I scheduled a last minute get together with a dozen of my teammates in southern California for some much overdue teambuilding in the midst of COVID. I had a venue (the Langham Hotel in Pasadena), but had no idea what kind of activity to do with the team. A web search led me to Wise Guys and Myles was able to schedule us on just a couple days notice. Our gamemaster (Ashby) and her assistant (Bridget) were amazing...and the Decathlon itinerary of games were super engaging. My entire team had a blast and raved about the event. True Story I: When I was eight I flipped a Monopoly board over on a friend after I accused her of cheating (because she was). True Story II: Between the ages of 14-17 none of my friends would play any competitive game with me because I was too competitive and I took the "fun" out of it. I have since calmed down. I still like competition though. True Story III: I have wanted to go to a Wise Guys event for two years. Really. Look at a thread from 2008 where I get more information about an event at the Egyptian Theatre. True Story IV: Every single time there has been a public game I have been aware of I have already had plans that couldn't have been broken. At the Elvis 75th Birthday Party at the Egyptian I hear "Hi Sophia." For those out there who don't know, I'm also a LA Derby Doll Enforcer and Sophia LoRenegade is my alter ego. I look and there is Thomas Refferson, the LADD Head Ref. I knew he had a company that did team building games for companies and sometimes public events, but I don't think it was until that moment that I realized that he was half of the Wise Guys that I've been trying to play with for two years. I've wanted to go to one of their events before I had even gone to a derby game. So why was he there and why did it finally click for me? Wise Guys was (it feels like a 'were' situation but it's a single company, grrr grammar) running an Elvis-themed interactive bingo game -- KINGO. I take competition very seriously (as you have probably gleaned by this point) and I was out for blood. It was actually quite fun and I got to learn a lot about people I would have never known otherwise. I was also able to fully appreciate the extent of Elvis fanaticism. Of everyone there, only two other people (and me!) were able to fill out the entire KINGO sheet. I randomly won the drawing for the select few and not only did I win a cool gift certificate, I also won a spot for a friend and me on the next Wise Guys game. Flash forward to last Saturday. Literally the only break from the rain happened from a half hour before to a half hour after the game. The guys have pull with SOMEONE. That or the sheer awesomeness of the event changed the weather. Either way, it was just as amazing as I thought it would be. When does THAT happen? The game was Camera Assassins: Single Edition. I didn't take the tag line too seriously, and no one else seemed to either. That aside, it was a great game. Despite the wet weather, there were five or six teams of two present. We were all given cameras, assassin envelopes and ten minutes of instructions. Even though there were a lot of rules, they made sense and made the game easy to play, although far from easy. The game was split into two separate objectives: Kill or be killed and take as many photos on the scavenger hunt list as you can in two hours. So I don't want to toot my own horn...who am I kidding? My partner, the ever Yelpee Shauna D. and I killed it. My bloodlust continued from the last WG game and as everyone else hemmed and hawed, or you know, socialized at the beginning of the game, I grabbed Shauna and we hauled ass to the first area to take photos. Luckily, she is almost as competitive as I am. Although we are competitive, we're not crazy and we worked with almost all the teams at some point -- mostly because that is how the game is structured if you wanted to win. After the end of the game we all headed over to a near by restaurant for awards and drinks. I really needed to get home to my dog but I ended up staying for a full hour because the company was so great. Not everyone stayed at the restaurant, but those who did were really nice and fun to spend a rainy late afternoon with. So yea, when I really like something my reviews are haphazard. Obviously, I REALLY liked this. I am so excited to play more Wise Guys games (info describing the games on their website). About a month ago, I went to the Egyptian Theatre for the first time for Elvis' 75th Birthday celebration. I was supposed to bring a New York yelper with me as my plus one but plans fell through and my yelp lovely, Skylar came with. Part of the Elvis festivities included a bingo game cutely named "Kingo" organized by the Wise Guys. Skylar took the sheet and was already strategizing how she was going to win while we were stuffing our faces at the nearby food trucks. She may or may not have been fiercely competing against a 9-year-old for the grand prize. Well, she and the 9-year-old and another actually completed the Kingo sheet. One of the prizes was a pair of tickets to the next Wise Guys event, Camera Assassins: Singles Edition. This past Saturday, during a brief respite from the rain, we ran around Pan Pacific Park playing what sounded like the most complicated scavenger hunt with a twist. The twist being we were also "assassins" and were randomly assigned a target. The point of the game was to interact with others and possibly meet someone new. Hello, singles. For the pictures part, we were given a digital camera along with a sheet of 25 things we had to shoot pictures of. We could shoot no more than five pictures in five different areas of the park. However, we could use the same picture if it pertained to other things on the list. Some examples of pictures we had to take included "fictional TV family," YMCA, people doing the Wave, music album cover, a panel from the Sunday comics, double dutch jump rope, etc. Skylar and I are both competitive and needless to say, we won and not only did we win that part of the game, we finished it before anyone else. The other part, we also were able to "kill" our targets. I had to "kill" my target by getting a picture of their mid drift. Fortunately, one of the items we had to take pictures of was an outie belly button. I approached my target and asked if he had one. He didn't but I convinced him to create a fake one and when I snapped a picture, I crazily yelled, "BOOYAH, you're dead." He never forgave me and whoops, there goes my chance to talk to a cute stranger. Later, I was "killed" in the most ignoble way. I knew someone was gunning for me by trying to get me to do a thumb's up sign. Any time I had my thumb somewhat up (poised over the camera, pushing the button on a pen), Skylar would snap it back down. Eventually, I was killed with a kiss. When an assassin has multiple kills, they can use another weapon, giving the game another twist. In any case, we were given free booze for our win and tickets to the next game. My team just completed a Wise Guys event and it was so much crazy fun! It was Camera Assassins; a scavenger hunt with a twist. Firstly, another event company cancelled at the last minute and I had to scramble to find another company. Wise Guys jumped right in and helped me out. Phew! My attendees had no idea this was last minute. They really enjoyed it. During our lunch the following day we showed the pictures and everyone just laughed and relived the event. I've never been to Indiecade before, let alone virtually, so I was pretty nervous, but they were incredibly friendly and created a really great environment for (most of us) strangers to interact with each other in and get to know each other! Wise Guys hosted a company dinner I went to over the summer, and it was such a great night of entertainment! I can't remember the host's name, but he was such a unique and entertaining character. They put on a scavenger hunt that encompassed the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Grauman's Chinese Theater, etc. When we returned we watched footage of ourselves during the scavenger hunt and then competed in small group activities. I had a ton of fun that night. I would be very excited to go to any Wise Guys event in the future. read more
