When you want an all-beef hotdog with a little char, look no further than Wolfy's. That's exactly what I did after work one day when I stopped by. In addition to Wolfy's humongous sign, the eatery is a no frills hot dog and hamburger shack. Beware that you can order ahead but that there is no drive thru. The line for Wolfy's on a Thursday evening was out the door, which was a signal that the food was going to be great! I joined the line and it went fast! I ordered a jumbo char dog and fries. The fries were hot and crispy with a similar taste to McDonald's and the jumbo char dog was perfectly grilled. I used to love coming here when I was a kid, because it was just a place that seemed to attract a kid's attention. Now that I'm back I still enjoy it, because it's still got that familiarity and halo of nostalgia but on top of that they still make pretty decent food. But there are some staples you need try no matter what - Portillo's, Devil Dawgs, Clark Street Dogs, Downtown Dogs, The Wiener's Circle, Superdawg... And, of course, Wolfy's. (Yeah, I know, there are others...) Wolfy's is a classic, drive-in style hot dog joint. Of course, they serve a completely classic Chicago dog. But they also have other things, burgers, chicken, etc. The fries rock, the dogs are great, and really everything else is very good. But is it the best Chicago dog? Well, it's damn close. So why am I not giving them 4-5 stars? Well it comes down to everything else. Don't get me wrong, LOVE a good Chicago dog. But not every time. Sometimes I like a different style of dog. And that's where Wolfy's drops down a bit. Their Chicago dog is awesome. But if I want a chili dog, a bacon dog, or some other version, I'm way better off going to Flub a Dub Chubs. I'm always amazed at the quality of everything at Wolfy's. Somehow they manage to prepare their dogs with beautiful red juicy tomatoes even at this time of year (early March). The pickles are exceptional - today my dog had two large slices on it. Fries are superb. Always wanted to try Wolfys and finally made it over. I went with the double cheeseburger meal with everything on it included grilled onions. It came with fries and a pepsi. Burger was very good and the fries were fresh. I came in during lunch time and was ready in a timely manner. Took it to go and everything was wrapped up with ketchup and napkins without having to ask. Happy with that service. They have their own parking lot, which is awesome. I did expect this place to be packed but that's always a good thing. I waited about 5 minutes in line to order and they have plenty of seating available inside. I ordered their jumbo char dog and a polish. Both were phenomenal, but the char dog was the highlight of my meal. The hot dog was perfect. Steamed poppy seed bun, fresh thick tomato slices, chopped onions and relish, mustard and sport peppers with celery salt sprinkled on top. The char dog was perfectly grilled and tasty. The polish unfortunately was served with tomatoes and peppers, along with mustard and grilled onion. I prefer my polish's with mustard and grilled onions only. Easy fix, just take off what you don't like and start eating away. It was very delicious and filling. Can't beat a polish with mustard and the grilled onions adding a sweet taste with every bite. I would definitely come here again. One thing that I noticed while I was watching my food as well as others be made, is that their burgers looked so delicious. No mustard. No ketchup. Mustard and ketchup are available next to the plastic utensils. Fresh. Delicious. Huge burger! My lunch: $7.59 My husband ordered 2 hot dogs and fries for $7.59 (it came with a beverage). He had Mug's root beer. He said it was an "above-average hot dog, but not excellent." He said, "Gene and Judes still has the best hot dogs in Chicago!" I'm not a huge hot dog fan, but whenever I have a taste for an excellent hot dog -- I hit up Gene & Jude's joint. Every time. The restaurant was busy. There were plenty of tables and booths. The booth we selected was dirty. I cleaned it off myself. In fact, I noticed other tables and booths were dirty. The parking lot is small. When we arrived we got the last spot in the lot. We did not make a special trip to Wolfy's. We decided to try Wolfy's for lunch since we had an appointment less than 1 mile away from Wolfy's. The french fries are thin. My fries were very salty, so I used several napkins to wipe off the excess salt. The fries are frozen and NOT freshly cut (other hot dog joints serve up fresh cut fries). Would I return again? Yes. To be explicit, hubby and I saw the trace of CPD vehicle and assumed that these officers were going to tackle the wolf's dungeon. As much as I wanted to befriend with Wolfy's, I didn't find the food to be too exciting. I have to say that their wolf master at Wolfy's knew how to calculate the mark-ups to achieve the profitable margins. Think about this me, my friends. If a single hot dog is charged for $2.39 and a hot dog combo costs $5.39, including an order of regular-sized fries and drink. That means the fries/drink portion of the meal is worth three (3) bucks. Knowing my numbers and how to efficiently budget my lunch, I would say forgo the combo option and get a milk shake instead. The taste of fries was nothing to write home about. The protagonist, Chi-town style hot dog, was dressed appropriately, including that magic celery salt. For some reason, it didn't stand out like it should. I sampled a piece of hubby's Italian beef. It preferred the home-style, with a little bit of chewiness. Wolfy's IB definitely is the "floss-free" kind. It was tender and the remnants wouldn't stay in between your teeth, yet "decent" was the best adjective for describing this.
