First, fries come with sandwiches. They are the skinny type and are wonderful. Best ones around. Hamburgers and hotdogs are great for those who go with the standard, but they shine on their other sandwiches. My go to are the cheese steak and the Bulgogi (Korean beef) sandwich. The Bulgogi is so tender, with a hint of sweetness. Italian beef and gyros are reliable. Also, the have ramen as well. Spicy and so good on a cold day. It's an old building on a corner, but I will drive by portillos and chickafil and go J's any day. Buy local, support the little guys, you won't be sorry. read more

First of all, this review is about the hot dogs and hot dogs only. So...Umm...where do I begin? A two hot dog combo with fries for 5.59, YES PLEASE, and hot peppers are an additional 10 cents, no biggie. I'm not going to knock it for no poppyseed bun or lack of celery salt. But it was lacking in flavor. Thank goodness the peppers were worth the 10 cents but couldn't help this flaccid dog. The dog just look sad. But thank goodness for the fries. The fries was a big boost. The place was immaculate and has a fairly decent off street parking area. It's sad when the name has hot dogs in it's name but it doesn't seem that hot dogs isn't the number one focus. This place has so much potential. read more

The food is fresh and super solid! I highly recommend the bulgogi sandwich. The hot dogs were very good too, more simplified than other Chicago dogs- not as heavy/loaded with as many toppings as Superdawg, for example. The fries were amazing too, they taste exactly like McDonald's fries. Super fast and friendly service. Seemed like they had lots of regular customers which gave the place a friendly atmosphere, and I can honestly see myself becoming a regular here too. read more

The place is operated by a Korean couple. The husband does all the cooking while the wife takes the orders, works the register, and packs the food. I've had quick interactions with both of them and they are super sweet. Even the roughest of customer walks out smiling and waving goodbye to them. They have two dishes that you will not find at similar hot dog joints; spicy ramen and the Bulgogi sandwich. I just had the bulgogi sandwich, and it is a truly Chicago experience. It's definitely one that brings me great pride to be a Chicagoan. Think about it, a Korean immigrant couple, running a business making American dogs and burgers and they put a little piece of themselves on the menu, and it's just fits perfectly on the menu, next to the Polish, the Italian beef, the cheeseburger and the Gyro. That's Chicago right there! It's simple; just seasoned bulgogi, grilled onions, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a Italian roll. It's not a huge sandwich that's going to put you to sleep after eating it, but I kind of appreciated it for being right-sized. The bulgogi with grilled onions has just the right balance of savory and sweet. The whole package, with everything on it, was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I have also tried all the staples (burger, dogs, beef, etc) and they are consistently good. Exactly what you would expect and made hot and fresh. Place's like J's, literally ma and pa hot dog stands, are becoming extinct and being replaced by bougie overpriced kitsch eateries with $6 hot dogs, and $12 burgers, where they expect a 20-30% tip for rolling their eyes at you. While J's Corner is no frills, the prices are very fair, the service is friendly, and the food is made fresh, quick, and delicious....again, try that bulgogi sandwich. So good! read more

Better than I can make quickly at home, and served with a smile. I am good with that. If I were ever to come back I'd get either the double or the bacon cheeseburger, simply because the single patty was dwarfed by the bun. I'd probably pass on the corn dog-- good flavor but mine was burnt black on one side where I'm guessing it was pressed to the bottom of the fryer by the grill basket. Fries were good but she forgot to salt them and I had no emergency salt packets in my car! I've driven by here so many times and now I finally stopped in. Easy location, decent street parking. Small little hole in the wall place but the inside is clean and the people were friendly. They give free fries with every sandwich - since I ordered two dogs she asked if I wanted two fries also- nice, because if I was eating both dogs myself, one fry would be enough - better than tossing them. The hotdog was decent- Vienna beef with mustard, relish, pickle and tomato - No celery salt and sport peppers are ¢10. Plain buns with the dogs. The hotdog itself is a 4 out of 5. The fries were just regular fries but they were crispy and hot - what else do you need? The lady offered ketchup with my order without me having to ask. I grew up in Chicago but don't get back here often. When I get to town I always want a Chicago style Vienna hotdog. We stopped at Js Corner Dogs on the way into town from O'hare to grab lunch. My husband enjoyed his gyro, and the free fries were crisp and not greasy. Prices are very fair at $6 or so for the gyro and only $3.50 for the dog. The hotdog is probably the worst Chicago dog I've ever had. First, not a poppy seed bun. Steamed, but plain (whimper)! The dog was overcooked and flaccid and more gray-brown than pink. It was supposed to have mustard, but didn't. I had to ask. The relish was not the bright green type we expected, but standard dull relish. None of the bright juicy flavors of my favorite places. If you come here, get the gyro or bulgogi sandwich. Skip the hotdog. read more

Dear Vienna Beef, I was curious about the standards that need to be upheld in order to display the Vienna Beef logo at a restaurant. Surely it's can't just be selling the hot dogs. The reason I ask is that J's Corner Hot Dogs is selling Vienna Beef hot dogs without a poppy seed bun nor celery salt, and charges 10 cents extra for hot peppers. Is nothing sacred anymore? These are NOT Chicago dogs and I ask that you intervene immediately on behalf of the Vienna Beef brand. Seriously, what's up with all these great reviews of this place? The food was nothing special, it was too expensive, and they don't sell PROPER CHICAGO HOT DOGS. That alone is enough to keep my review at less than three stars and will prevent me from ever going there again. Hot Doug's burns down and this place is still open? I am so glad to see J's getting some props. I live just a few doors away and, believe, me I could do much much worse for a corner hot dog joint. One would think that all Vienna Beef hot dogs joints are the same...and one would be wrong. I don't know if it's the preparation, or the bun, or the grill or an ancient Chinese secret but everything I've ever had off of that grill is tasty as all get out. Even during a lunch rush, the staff at J's gets food out quickly. They are all very friendly and the "free fries with any sandwich" makes any menu choice a good deal. I must confess I haven't tried the more processed foods here--pizza puffs, etc. I like to stick the devil that I know (ie. burgers, dogs and the occasional gyro.) The meat is tasty and the fries are as good as any I've ever had. Should you drive across town for this place? Probably not worth the time. However, if you are in this hood and looking for a decent, cheap and quick lunch, I highly recommend this over the other fast food options in the area. And as long as were divulging our own pet nicknames for this place (see Patrick's & Julia's reviews below,) I admit that sometime in the early 2000's I started referring to this place as "J-Lo's Hot Dogs." You drive by this place and based on the conditions on the outside you think that it is not for you, it must be horrible, it has gotta be a pit. Well, that didn't stop me, I had to check it out. I drove in to park, the place is on a triangular lot just off of Elston and just a little south of Irving Park. Other than for the crew, it can hold maybe three or four customer cars comfortably. However, it seems most fans are locals that are within walking distance. The place is a stand or more accurately it has counters and stools. The ordering and dining experience is confined to a 8' x 16' area or you can take your order outside and sit at one of the unshaded rectangle picnic tables. You will find the inside to be stuck in the 70's along with the goofy steel spiral pickets only in front of the register to supposedly prevent something. The menu is limited, but done the Chicago Way. The typical stuff like Vienna Dogs, burgers, beef, fried sides, .... with shoestring fries included, whether you like it or not. Not bad fries even though they must be frozen. The food, get to the food, how was it? After a few visits, I've tried the dog, burger, beef and of course the fries. Mediocre, that is all I got to say. If you live in the neighborhood, they know enough to keep you coming back, but not very often. The quality and price matrix, three. Seriously, I didn't like the burger and beef. The dog, close but no cigar. Add one for the fact that they are a mom and pop business and subtract a half for them not being very successfully in giving their customers a good deal.
