Wonder Bakery is a local shop right at the L.A. Chinatown gateway within Chinatown Central Plaza. You can't miss them. They are on the left side near the entrance. Located on N Broadway. I've been here a few times. Shop is not too big with limited inside seating. They sell a variety of pastries, cakes, and other baked goods. They now serve milk tea, smoothies, and juice drinks. No public restrooms. I was nearby a couple weeks ago for the L.A. Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K Run/Walk & Bike Ride event. I wanted to support this bakery. I bought a couple egg tarts, two baked BBQ pork buns, a Chinese donut, one Mango smoothie (comes with milk), one Watermelon juice, and one Three Berries juice. Wow, egg tart was one of the best I've ever eaten! It was creamy and sweet in a crisp, buttery shell. SO GOOD! I wish I bought one dozen and not two individuals... next time one dozen for sure. BBQ pork bun filling was adequate and taste was decent, but I've had better from other bakeries. Chinese donut was a bit oily unfortunately. Out of the 3 drinks, fresh watermelon juice was the best... will get again. The other two drinks didn't have any depth in the fruit taste whatsoever... will not get them again. Staff was just okay. Not the most smiley crew. They weren't super busy so I was in and out of here under 10 minutes. Atmosphere could be better. Place seems a bit dated. They could use a fresh look. I stopped by here for an egg tart. At $2.45 for one egg tart, it is a little pricey, but it was quite delicious! It was a decent size (bigger than the egg tart at Long's Bakery, which is cheaper but also smaller). The filling was smooth and custardy, but perhaps a hair too sweet for my tastes (if I'm being picky). The crust was flaky (as all egg tart crusts should be). This is a solid egg tart. I would get it again in LA. There's a $5 minimum if you want to pay with credit card. read more

A Local joint serving milk teas, coffee, cake, ice cream and pastries! There tends to be a little wait but it moves by swiftly. You order at the front and they grab the pastries for you. I had the Egg tart, bbq pork bun, and sponge cake. The sponge cake itself had too strong of an aftertaste egg flavor. But I did enjoy the egg tart and bbq pork bun. We stopped by as the bakery was opening and ordered the strawberry cake. The cake was removed from an unrefrigerated case, and the cake was moldy. They throw away the other piece of cake in the case, and gave us a fresh piece from the refrigerated case. But.... we watched them cut up the cake from the refrigerated case, and put the slices in the unrefrigerated case. This is a health concern, putting sliced fresh strawberries and whipped cream in the case. read more

This place was unpleasant to say the least. The most off putting part was the service. We walked in to a young man on a tablet watching shows... now, I work retail myself, and I understand that when a store is empty and it's slow you sit down and chill. I'm not expecting perfection from a bakery. I didn't mind this at all. What I did mind is that, as we were trying to order, he was dismissive and rude to us. Treated me and my friend like bothers and inconveniences. Was incredibly unkind and dismissive. We wanted to order a fruit smoothie, and he told us the entire store doesn't have any fruit whatsoever available. None. Now, as someone who works retail, I also know that's a lie. He probably didn't want to clean up after the fruit, or make the fruit, or be bothered with it. Honestly, I wouldn't have even minded this either, if only he'd been nice about it. But he wasn't. This looks like a small, family establishment, so I'm sure this young man is someone's nephew, brother or cousin--but being kind is so basic. It's not hard to be nice to strangers. Left a bad taste in my mouth. Outside of the service, the drinks are good. I liked their tea and boba was delicious. We got moon cakes and those were okay, nothing bad but nothing great either, I wouldn't recommend getting them. The store itself was dirty and severely lacking presentation. Everything was super dusty, including the shelves with pastries on them. It was unkept and obviously not cleaned. I keep a star because the food wasn't the worst, and the drink was good, but if you're visiting China Town this location isn't worth your money or business. I don't live in the LA area and rarely go to Chinatown even if I am around. But there's one thing that can get me to go: the Curry Beef Buns at Wonder Bakery. This time I called two days ahead and ordered 20 of them. They do freeze well and stay delicious after being microwaved. It's not only nostalgia; these Curry Beef Buns actually taste really good. The bun is nice and soft and not too doughy. And the curry minced beef with a little bit of onion tastes really good. And no other Chinese bakery seems to make them; not in other Chinese bakeries in Southern California, not in the San Francisco Bay Area, and not in the New York City area. They usually make Curry Pork Puff Pastries instead which tend to be more oily. I have been eating them since I was a student and when the buns were about 60 cents each, 45 years ago! And incredibly, the taste and quality stay excellent all these years. I have tried their BBQ Pork Buns and Egg Tarts before, and they were also quite delicious. Will have to try their drinks when I have more time. My drive from Las Vegas to Los Angeles on a Sunday afternoon was awful. I almost didn't make it there before closing. They texted me to confirm that I was picking up, and the buns were ready when I finally got there. Service was really nice and friendly. They actually gifted me three extra buns. Great bakery in Chinatown!! I got a BBQ pork bun and two cookies. The bread was nice and soft while the meat was sweet and flavorful. The cookies were also very tasty! Really good almond flavor and crunchy texture. If you pay by card, there is a minimum amount. If the minimum is not reached, then there will be a 45 cent charge. Service was quick. I arrived early in the morning, so some breads were not out. So a couple months ago, having realized that the changes to the blue line made travel from Long Beach to LA's Chinatown now *very* accessible... I was just walking back to the subway on my way from having finally checked out Steep, when I saw a Chinese bakery, and had to check out the pastries. I'm a *huge* fan of egg tarts - pre-covid, I once spent a few days on a work trip staying at a hotel in Chinatown in SF, and tried a *bunch* of different bakeries there selling egg tarts and other Chinese pastries, ranging from quite good, to *wonderfully* good. I'd never had any egg tarts as good elsewhere, but I also hadn't been to *Chinatown* in LA in ages, so I was looking forward to trying them! Anyway, obviously from my star rating, I continue to not be impressed with LA's attempts at egg tarts. I hate giving less than great reviews... they were certainly a good price, and the actual egg part was solid enough, but their crust was just... dry, kinda doughy, and not very flavorful compared to any half decent bakery in SF. Maybe it was an off day? I also tried what I thought was a melon pastry (it said it was, then I asked if it was, and someone said yes, but I don't think their English was the best). I'm still not sure if it just didn't taste very much like melon, or if it was a misnomer... but it was the same doughy, not overly flavorful crust, and what tasted like just unflavored mochi inside, definitely not actual melon. The people here were friendly (if hurried), and the pastries are all pretty inexpensive (and their day-old stuff absolutely *stupidly* so), but at least the couple I tried weren't that *good*, so price doesn't matter as much at that point, unfortunately. Wanted to leave a shout out after I was pleasantly surprised to find fresh fried sugar egg puffs on the counter! (They labeled them as Chinese Donuts which are more typically associated with the savory dough stick that you eat with rice porridge.) The puff was giant! This is right in New Chinatown. A pretty standard bakery serving a variety of simple desserts and some Asian specialties. I came later in the afternoon so they were out of what I'm assuming are their more popular items such as the Egg Tart or Walnut Cookie. The pricing is very affordable for each item being a few bucks. I ended up getting the Mini Lotus Moon Cake and a Vietnamese Iced Coffee. The Mini Lotus Moon Cake was classic. Smooth interior that is similar to red bean paste, but is from lotus seeds instead. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee had the essence of a Vietnamese-style cafe, but had too much milk added for me that ended up watering it down. It still made for a good iced latte though. Stopped by this little bakery about an hour before closing and it was empty. It seems like most of the pastries on the outer shelves had already sold out. The lady made our drinks pretty quickly. I ordered the green milk tea and it tasted very milky and sweet. I forgot to ask for less sugar! But the boba was chewy. The strawberry smoothie was very sweet too. No more the price-friendly option in this touristy plaza, this old-school Chinese bakery continues to serve up to the community new and old. Sign of the times and survival necessity, I continue to be very happy to see business as usual. The same old favorites are still available, and now they can be found wrapped in plastic for self-service along with the items behind the glass bakery case. After placing my order, I noticed in their glass display where they have their pastries there were a couple flys roaming around. And to top it off she was eating while arguing with me. What kind of Customer Service is that? Solid egg tart. I've been coming here for like 20 years. Whether the owners have changed or not, I have no clue. The egg tart has stayed the same. Unlike other bakeries that have changed their egg tart recipes to have cookie type crusts, this place remains true. My mom dragged me to Chinatown in the 90's when it was still hopping at least once a month. She loved haggled for artwork and jewelry. Part of bribing me to go with her, she'd let me pick sweets from this place. They sell steamed buns, cakes, pastries, bread, and ice cream. I had a really strong craving for a roll cake one night and luckily found wonder bakery. They didn't have a huge selection/wish they had strawberry or taro etc, but I got the vanilla and it was so nice! The cake was soft but dense sponge. I ordered apple pies, cream horns, chocolate cream horns, and a cheesecake. Each item was dry, stale, and hard. Driving from San Bernardino county including the money I spent was not worth it. It was awful. Every single bite was full of dry and old dough. The cream horns filling the as stale. Let's suppose that it was prepared this morning, it would have not tasted like this. I know because I have previously eaten things that was a day old or was in my fridge longer than that. Since I do not cook, I eat out. I know the difference between fresh and today made - know the difference of yesterday or two days old and stale, hard not tasting good. The satisfying taste when you have danish just did not meet my expectations here. I love eating. This place is a no go. PERIOD!!! I should have went somewhere else.
