I believe I saw Phoenix Bakery being featured in some social media video, and figured I would have to make my way to this place eventually. On one random day, I ended up in Chinatown and decided to go exploring. Checking Yelp, a deceptively familiar name emerged, which was this very Phoenix Bakery! It has the vibe of a classic bakery, but with notable creations offered here. I was in search of the classic Hong Kong pineapple bun, and was pleased to find it here, with custard filling, earning its moniker Custard Bun. The custard bun is awesome, as expected. I also saw that they serve Napoleons here, which is one of my favorite desserts if done right. I've had good Napoleons and bad Napoleons, and am pleased to report that this was an instance of a good Napoleon. Specifically, the mango pineapple Napoleon was delightful. (I didn't know we could have fruit in our Napoleons!) The winter melon pastry is pleasant enough; I would buy it again. All this being said, a subsequent visit is in order because I haven't even gotten to try their cream cakes! Ordering protocol: wait in line, and then one of the employees behind the counter will help keep track of your order. Long-standing bakery in Chinatown that's probably become LA iconic spot to visit when around the area. Interestingly they might have kept most design unchanged so you could totally felt it in the store vibe. It's constantly busy throughout the day but they served very speedily and they had plenty of servers making the line moving in a blink. Good news, they weren't cash only like typical similar store around the area. They're popular for the strawberry cream cake, but I chose to go with the custard bun and wintermelon pie as I wasn't a fan of that kind of cream and spongecake. The bun was fluffy and moist and tasted as good as the scent we could smell when walking around the bakery. Always loved when simple old-school stuff turned out good and stuck with people's liking. The wintermelon pie base somewhat reminded me of the crumbly style mooncake skin, just that this one had unique filling. I loved wintermelon as a drink but this was my first time having it as pie! read more

I have been coming to Phoenix Bakery since I was a child to get their renowned butterfly pastries. They are still as delicious as they were many years ago. Butterfly pastries are hard to find. I've checked Chinatown's in Chicago and New York and haven't found them. I understand they are a specialty. The service was friendly. My aunt used to buy all my cousins cakes here back when we were all little and being that I now work close to china town I decided to stop by after work and get a cake to take home. I got their strawberry crème cake and was just as delicious as I remembered it. Place has been around for some time so they must have something right and cakes and desserts are them. Place is a little small and near an alley so parking was scares but I lucked out and found a spot right by the door. Being that I arrived close to 5:30 I was afraid they would sell out but I was able to get my hands on one. So delicious and tasty. Staff is friendly and helpful and get you in and out quick. Ok I can see why the cake is popular and they been around for 89 years! Visiting Socal I made sure to bookmark this spot and made the drive down. Since it was a week day parking was easy. I've had strawberry cream cakes from other places but it does not compare with Phoenix. It's not overly sweet and the whipped cream is so fluffy and not overly sweet either. Cake is moist and fluffy. Similar to asian cakes. The slice almond cakes is a must in my opinion but we did order one without for my son. The chocolate ganache was moist and chocolatey. My son said he could eat a bunch more slices. The neopoleon was amazing. Huge and full of custard and cream. The crust was flaky and crispy. Worth every bite! I absolutely love Phoenix Bakery, and so does my family. My mom has been coming here for years, so for her 45th birthday today, I knew I had to continue the tradition and pick up a cake from the same place she's always loved. From the moment you walk in, there's such a strong sense of nostalgia. I've always adored their logo, and stepping inside just feels warm, cozy, and welcoming. There are so many sweets and goodies to choose from. It's honestly hard not to want one of everything. The almond cookies are a personal favorite, but I've been eyeing those sugar butterflies and definitely need to try them next time. Of course, I had to go with their classic fresh strawberry whipped cream cake for my mom, and it did not disappoint. They even had candles available for purchase (and some complimentary ones on the counter), which was super convenient. I was in and out quickly, and the girl who helped me was awesome, friendly, efficient, and her handwriting on the cake was so neat and pretty! Consistent quality, great service, and honestly such an important part of LA history as the oldest family-owned Chinese bakery. It's places like this that make me proud to support local businesses. After the 2026 L.A. Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K Run/Walk & Bike Ride event for the Year of the Horse, I visited the famous iconic Phoenix Bakery in L.A. Chinatown. Wow, it has been in business for 88 years since 1938. One OG bakery still going strong! Shop was clean and organized. Limited inside seating. Cool merchandise for sale. You will need to ask the staff for assistance since merch is behind locked window case. They are known for their signature strawberry whipped cream cake. I have tried them in the past. They are very light and creamy, but taste was just okay. Nothing extraordinary. They sell a variety of cakes, pastries, and other baked goods. I come here mainly for their super yummy sugar butterflies aka dansan... Chinese pastry made from fried dough and covered in a thick, sweet syrup. They are light and flaky. SO VERY GOOD! Please be warned... it will get very sticky at the teeth! They come in two sizes. I go for the larger size that comes with 6. I feel the smaller ones are much darker in color that may be overcooked. I prefer mine a bit lighter in color. Staff lady was cordial and friendly. She took my order and packaged it quickly. I also got one Uberry slice cake and one Choco Mousse Matcha slice cake. Unfortunately, I didn't care for either of them as the cake was dry. Both were lacking sweetness and taste. Will not get them again. Paid parking can be found at various blocks and on the streets. FYI street parking is free on Sundays. I got lucky and found street parking. Phoenix Bakery is a must stop when visiting L.A. Chinatown! They can get extremely busy. Please be patient. I drove from Pasadena to Chinatown specifically for a birthday cake from this bakery, it's a nostalgic cake my boyfriend grew up eating as a kid with his family, and yesterday was his birthday. I wanted to surprise him with this cake. I did a lot of planning. I researched their cake sizes and options ahead of time, then called shortly after they opened to check availability before making the trip (especially since smaller size can sell out I read online). The phone call was extremely off-putting. The woman who answered was EXTREMELY rude, she interrupted me sharply when I started explaining I was looking for a small 6" or medium 8" cake all depending on what they had in stock because it's only two of us. snapped "I didn't ask you what size you want I asked how many people it was serving" and repeatedly stressed how busy they were with "10 people waiting" and a constant line every day. She made same-day pickup sound like a huge imposition, treating me as if I was lucky they'd even consider it. That description couldn't have been further from reality! When I arrived within the first hour of opening, there was literally one other family in the store, no line out the door, no crowd, no shortage at all. Tons of cakes were available on display, including the size I wanted. I picked it up without any issue. Unfortunately, the cake itself was a major letdown. It wasn't the light, fluffy sponge cake I expected from this nostalgic bakery, the white cake layers were extremely dry and underwhelming, bland and mediocre, especially given the hype. For the price, the effort of the drive, and especially the attitude on the phone, it fell waaaaaaaaay short. Honestly, any neighborhood Asian bakery could make a better tasting cake. The product quality alone would keep me from returning, but the terrible rude attitude and exaggerated phone interaction was the cherry on top. read more

Went to this bakery with my sister. We were planning to purchase some pastries for our cousins who are coming into town. We had not been at the Phoenix bakery in decades. We went on a Sunday morning after a major storm in Los Angeles, so the bakery was quiet. It was clean. I did not see many pastries in there showcases but I did see many employees busy in the back. We were greeted by Carla and she assisted us with a smile . My sister actually had placed an order on the telephone and so it was supposed to be ready by 1 o'clock in the afternoon, we were there at 11:30. It was ready. We asked her if it would be all right for her to hold the order while we walked around Chinatown, as we had not been there in a long while and wanted to reminisce. We returned and was greeted pleasantly by Lorna. She is a manager of the bakery. My sister proceeded to order a few more bakery goods, and we left We had a chance to sample the baked goods at home and they were very delicious. The price is reasonable and we will certainly return when we have a chance. Special mention, this bakery has been in Chinatown since 1938. Phoenix Bakery Los Angeles Chinatown This Bakery has been around since my 90 year old mother was a little girl, in fact 2 of my aunts were the original girls that worked the counter. I remember in my childhood going there for almond cookies, sesame cookies, fortune cookies, sugar butterfies, char siu baos and cakes, down the alley we use to get fortune cookies from a fortune cookie factory, some were irregular so they were less expensive. My wife loves the sugar butterfly treats which are just as good now as 50+ years ago. There is not much left in Chinatown, but nice to know Phoenix Bakery is still serving treats on Broadway Street. When arriving to the bakery, they have a very small lot on the side, and there is ample street parking (on weekdays) which does not cost much! We were happy to find parking across the street and pay .25 for a fifteen minute bakery run! When I walked in, I immediately understood how this place gets such amazing reviews and why it is so well known. The bakery had a nice "home" feel. The customer service was amazing! We went pretty early like around 11:30am on a Monday and the bakery was well stocked with cakes, cookies, and other pastries. We ordered a cream horn, the famous almond cookies and the small package of butterfly cookies. We forgot to take pictures because we were so excited to try the pastries! The cream horn was THE BEST I've ever had. It was so fresh and when you bit into it, it was so crispy and flakey! The cream filled inside tasted delicious and was not too sweet, it was perfect! The almond cookies were also so delicious. The employee said that they ship so many of them out a week and they are super popular. The butterfly cookies have to be my favorite cookie though! They had some kind of caramel on the outside and the cookie was so crispy, it does stick to your teeth when you bite it but it's well worth it! We will definitely be back and we will be ordering a cake for an upcoming birthday! We can't wait to taste some more treats from Phoenix! read more
