My aunt used to buy all my cousins cakes here back when we were all little and being that I now work close to china town I decided to stop by after work and get a cake to take home. I got their strawberry crème cake and was just as delicious as I remembered it. Place has been around for some time so they must have something right and cakes and desserts are them. Place is a little small and near an alley so parking was scares but I lucked out and found a spot right by the door. Being that I arrived close to 5:30 I was afraid they would sell out but I was able to get my hands on one. So delicious and tasty. Staff is friendly and helpful and get you in and out quick. Definitely give them a try for next time you want a great tasting cake. Fresh and not too sweet. Perfect balance of flavors

Delicious butterfly pastries from Phoenix Bakery.

I have been coming to Phoenix Bakery since I was a child to get their renowned butterfly pastries. They are still as delicious as they were many years ago. Butterfly pastries are hard to find. I've checked Chinatown's in Chicago and New York and haven't found them. I understand they are a specialty. The service was friendly. I also ordered a slice of the strawberry cake, it was moist and creamy even though I refrigerated it and ate it two days later. Phoenix Bakery is still serving amazing pastries.

My son took a trip from Reno to Los Angeles and picked up some delicious sugar butterflies for me. Still as delicious as I remember them 60+ years later. The bakery is still as busy as previous visits. Same great service and quality along with the price!

What's there to say about an iconic place? That you must try and you must come and buy one of everything because you will get home and wish you did after your first bite of anything!!!!

Ok I can see why the cake is popular and they been around for 89 years! Visiting Socal I made sure to bookmark this spot and made the drive down. Since it was a week day parking was easy. The ladies were so sweet and friendly. 1 strawberry whipped cream cake 1 strawberry whipped cream cake with almond 1 chocolate ganache 1 neopoleon Small box of almond cookies I must say the strawberry whipped cream cake is the best I ever had! I've had strawberry cream cakes from other places but it does not compare with Phoenix. It's not overly sweet and the whipped cream is so fluffy and not overly sweet either. Cake is moist and fluffy. Similar to asian cakes. The slice almond cakes is a must in my opinion but we did order one without for my son. The chocolate ganache was moist and chocolatey. My son said he could eat a bunch more slices. The neopoleon was amazing. Huge and full of custard and cream. The crust was flaky and crispy. Worth every bite! I love that the bakery had the old historic vibe. The sign is nostalgic and I'm definitely coming back!

I absolutely love Phoenix Bakery, and so does my family. My mom has been coming here for years, so for her 45th birthday today, I knew I had to continue the tradition and pick up a cake from the same place she's always loved. From the moment you walk in, there's such a strong sense of nostalgia. I've always adored their logo, and stepping inside just feels warm, cozy, and welcoming. There are so many sweets and goodies to choose from. It's honestly hard not to want one of everything. The almond cookies are a personal favorite, but I've been eyeing those sugar butterflies and definitely need to try them next time. Of course, I had to go with their classic fresh strawberry whipped cream cake for my mom, and it did not disappoint. They even had candles available for purchase (and some complimentary ones on the counter), which was super convenient. I was in and out quickly, and the girl who helped me was awesome, friendly, efficient, and her handwriting on the cake was so neat and pretty! Consistent quality, great service, and honestly such an important part of LA history as the oldest family-owned Chinese bakery. It's places like this that make me proud to support local businesses. I truly love everything about this bakery. It holds so many memories for me, and I'll continue coming back for years to come. One day, when I have my own kids I hope to bring them here just like my mom brought me. Please do yourself a big favor and support this local gem!

After the 2026 L.A. Chinatown Firecracker 5/10K Run/Walk & Bike Ride event for the Year of the Horse, I visited the famous iconic Phoenix Bakery in L.A. Chinatown. Wow, it has been in business for 88 years since 1938. One OG bakery still going strong! Shop was clean and organized. Limited inside seating. Cool merchandise for sale. You will need to ask the staff for assistance since merch is behind locked window case. They are known for their signature strawberry whipped cream cake. I have tried them in the past. They are very light and creamy, but taste was just okay. Nothing extraordinary. They sell a variety of cakes, pastries, and other baked goods. I come here mainly for their super yummy sugar butterflies aka dansan... Chinese pastry made from fried dough and covered in a thick, sweet syrup. They are light and flaky. SO VERY GOOD! Please be warned... it will get very sticky at the teeth! They come in two sizes. I go for the larger size that comes with 6. I feel the smaller ones are much darker in color that may be overcooked. I prefer mine a bit lighter in color. Staff lady was cordial and friendly. She took my order and packaged it quickly. I also got one Uberry slice cake and one Choco Mousse Matcha slice cake. Unfortunately, I didn't care for either of them as the cake was dry. Both were lacking sweetness and taste. Will not get them again. Paid parking can be found at various blocks and on the streets. FYI street parking is free on Sundays. I got lucky and found street parking. Phoenix Bakery is a must stop when visiting L.A. Chinatown! They can get extremely busy. Please be patient. The wait is worth it.

My family has come here since I was born. My birthday was never the same without a birthday cake from Phoenix Bakery. The fluffy white cake with fresh strawberries and cream layers have me always thinking back to my childhood. They do have other desserts there, but the cake is the reason I make the drive to Chinatown. If you need a large cake, you have to order in advance. You CAN buy cake by the slice here. There is very little parking, so street parking is your best bet.

My go to for birthday cakes. The cakes are fresh and not too sweet. Been coming here since they opened and since I was born. Service is great and fast. Place is clean and well maintained and organized. Shall be back again.

A local landmark and a family favorite! When they say sweet for the sweet, they mean it.Everything in here is so delicious and tasty.I cannot recommend anything specific.Because I recommend everything they offer

If you ever want the lightest, most delicious whipped cream filled cake Phoenix Bakery is the spot. Decades later and they are still baking the same amazing cakes. Service is great and there's lots of cookies and pastries to choose from.

They are known for their strawberry cake! However, I'm allergic to them so no-go for me. They do have other cakes and pastries to choose from. They mostly have sweet pastries with a couple of savory ones. I got a little bit of everything during my visit. The pastries were good and satisfying. The cakes were okay. I don't know if it's because I got slices or what.

Sorry, not at the present time

What days of the week are you open?

Will the strawberry cake settle or collapse if left out for 2 hours. I will like to deliver one from LA to la quinta ca?

I don't think it will collapse but just to be on the safe side I would put something soft underneath the cake box , like a folded towel or a piece of foam. This will help soften the shaking from the road bumps. I did that when I brought mine to the…

Are you selling the wintermelon pasteries again?

Yes! Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and weekends only.

Which on of the places in city of industry, has honey butterflies?

We have no location in the City of Industry. We can ship these to you, if you like

Can you put a photo transfer on to a strawberry cake?

No idea. They're very helpful, I would email them and ask. They rerun online requests/ questions within 1-2 days. A typical cake has roses on it, but they leave it blank and ice something personal on it when you pick it up.

Is it best to order ahead for the "wife cakes" and is there free parking for this place or do I have to pay for parking since it's in Chinatown? (I'm not from Cali)

Parking is free but very limited. I'd always recommend to call in and order so what you want is guaranteed

Not sure to be honest with you, at the present time, we do not have much demand for chocalate cakes. You may wish to contact us again, later this month

It was busy, obviously on a weekend, but there were kiosks to place your orders and the desserts came out fast enough given the amount of people there. I'd say, if it is busy, have someone find a table while the other orders so you have somewhere to sit. We tried three different shredded ice desserts, all single size: Matcha, Strawberry and Mango. For a single serving, they are so pretty big. If you get the large one, FYI, it is huge and should be shared by multiple people. The matcha was everyone's favorite. Great matcha flavor of you're in to matcha. The strawberry and mango were more of a her down, having very muted strawberry and mango flavored. Between the two, however, the mango was probably the better one. Just a little more flavorful. It was nice having the fresh fruit on each one though. Overall, a nice shaved ice spot in Ktown serving up a variety of shaved ice desserts. If you like matcha, get the matcha one for sure. As for the strawberry and mango, they're ok but you can definitely get better, more flavorful, fruit desserts elsewhere.

Blueberry Roti ($4)-- Flaky crumble on top and blueberry jam?? YES YESSSS. I liked this so much I'd definitely go back for it. Blueberry jam is so underrated and it's rare to find it in a pastry! Makes for a good sweet lil treat. Hot latte ($5)-- Perfect!! No complaints. Not too milky, not too light. Good ratio. I was actually kind of worried ordering a latte because not every place does it right but it's good here! Iced blueberry matcha ($6?)-- I see lots of good things about this drink on here but ooooooof... it missed the mark and by a LOOOT too. It was green sweet cereal milk. Where's the matcha? Where's the blueberry? It was so confusing because I see the green and I know I ordered matcha... but it's just sweet milk! And it's not even blueberry flavored milk. Did they forget the blueberry jam? Syrup? Whatever they use? Because it just tastes like the milk after a bowl of Frosted Flakes or something like that. Very sad, very disappointing. Ended up tossing after a couple sips. ANDDD for those matcha purists this is NOOOT the place for you! They have it pre mixed in a milk gallon.
