Obviously a terrific organization overall. Great quality food and typically friendly service inside the bakery. I've had consistently good service at the order counter. I can tell the employees here are making an effort and even learning a trade. I appreciate the service inside. I think the group of people that man the small parking lot could use some work on polishing their social graces. I realize its not the same work as inside the bakery/restaurant but addressing customers in such a gruff way doesn't get a customer's visit off the right way. Customers are here to spend their money to support this organization. This place is horrible. The Coffee cake is delicious but the service here is horrendous. I waited in a short line then when it was my turn, the person at the register walked away. It was my first time here and I wanted to try their LAUSD style Coffee Cake. I figured the girl would come back but I wanted to see the Cofee Cake before I purchased it so I took a few steps to peek in the display case, I came back to the line about the same time that the attendant returned and she looked at me and said, you have to get in line. She gave me a hard time after I explained to her that I was in line. I wasnt moving so she took my order but she was rude and hostile. The cofee cake was delicious and reminded me of the cofee cake from High School and Elementary school. Ill be back. I dont want to because of the bad service. Parking is the hardest part to nab because there is too much activity happening in this block. They are popular for their services and the bakery/ cafe is a training ground. I came this time to get a birthday cake for my dad and remembered they make carrot cake. 6 inch for $35. I saw purple ube cake and a coconut raspberry cake. They had a pistachio with raspberry filling (?) that I will have to return to try. Tis the season for pumpkin so they had pumpkin coffee bread which was the bomb. Wow! Stopped by here to pick up some snacks for a fire station. Purchased cinnamon rolls, carrot cake, and danish. Absolutely delicious!! The cinnamon roll was super moist, had tons of goo and icing. I heard the rest was delicious and gobbled up within minutes. Secured parking, fast service and SUPER friendly and accommodating staff. Place had a great vibe and I will definitely be back. Visited: 2024-12 Coffee cake $4: amazing. Very similar to LAUSD coffee cake. It was moist compared to the coffee cake that they deliver to one supermarket. Great concept, food and friendly staff. I gave 4 out of 5 due to some forgotten order items. Happened several times when an item ordered item was not delivered. I was not charged but it was mildly annoying as my lady ordered a Salmon dish she loved and it was forgotten. It can get very busy so choose times to visit wisely. I ordered cookies online. Yikes!! They were pricey and I figured that it was because they would be great! Nope. As you can see in the picture, there were missing cookies. Just stopped into the bakery for a couple of muffins and a loaf of bread. Haven't tried the bread yet, but the chocolate chip muffin was amazing! There were chocolate chips throughout, and a very tasty crumb. Probably one of the best chocolate chips muffin's I've ever had! Also, the employees both at the bakery and the gift shop next door were kind and unfailingly polite. It's always a pleasure to eat and shop here! A good reminder to come by more often. read more

My husband has been talking about the Homeboy Bakery since I met him, and it was so exciting to stumble upon this place accidentally while exploring LA. We took the train to Chinatown and it was conveniently located right across the street from the stop, and of course we had to come check it out. We walked inside to almost all of the bakery seats reserved for a large party of 30. From this I thought it definitely must be popular and good. We wanted to try a bakery item, so we chose a cupcake with chocolate icing, and we also got the cucumber-pineapple-lime drink. Now, when I say that was the best cupcake I've ever had, it truly is. The icing is what made it so special. It had an AMAZING taste with a thick and rich texture. We left knowing we should have bought so much more- and don't forget, free bakery item when you check in (which I didn't see until I already left unfortunately). The drink was extremely flavorful and refreshing. You could definitely taste all of the cucumber, pineapple, and lime that went into the drink. Super delicious. The bakery offers many different items such as cakes, cookies, bread, muffins, danishes, and many more. The bakery is connected to a cafe serving food like salads, soups, sandwiches, tacos, and a number of different drinks that I definitely regret not checking out. The service is great too. Towards leaving I started coughing up a storm, and Mario from the staff made sure I got some water so I'm okay. Next door they also sell Homeboy merchandise and they even offer tattoo removal. This week we had the wonderful experience of eating at the Homegirl Cafe inside of the Homeboy Bakery. Everyone from the parking lot attendants to the servers were exceptionally friendly and hospitable. The food was excellent with generous portions. My friend ordered the salad with a side of grilled salmon. The salmon portion was very large and all of it only cost $11. I was very impressed with the whole experience and am grateful that this business exists helping people who are working to change their lives for the better. read more

I have had their tortilla chips from Ralph's and loved them and stopped by their store this week to pick up desserts. They have a nice cafe as well as a bakery stocked with delicious looking breads, pastries and cookies for fair prices. I went with a few cookies as well as a baguette, trying not to overdue it but I cannot wait to be back for more. Way more cookies for starters. I got 6 different kinds and LOVED LOVED LOVED them all! Not usually a cookie person, they always kind of bore me, these were so fresh, soft, almost warm still, high quality ingredients, baked so perfectly, I can't even begin to describe the party going in my mouth with each bite. Little party, tiny party as I only had 6 cookies, a few minutes later I was seriously thinking about going back for more. "Jobs Not Jails" - I love their motto and what they represent. I was first exposed to the Homeboy brand when I bought their salsa at Ralph's Market. Their salsa verde and mango salsa are the only kind I'll buy! When I was at the Farmer's Market and saw their bakery booth, I had to ask if it was the same company, which of course it was! I definitely had to pick up some sweets to try! Double cinnamon raisin bread- Pillowy bread loaded with cinnamon sugar flavor. Toasted with butter and it's amazing! Blueberry scone- I expected it to be a little dry, but it was surprisingly soft and full of blueberries. I took a tour of the Homeboy Industries & had the opportunity to have lunch at the Homegirl Café where I had their 3 tacos combo. I wanted dessert but at the time in Spring 2015, there was no direct connection between the bakery & the café so I couldn't order a dessert. I went to the Homeboy bakery counter & bought a Leche Flan or crème caramel in order to take it to my table at the Homegirl Cafe for dessert. The size was just right....not too big since this is a rich eggy, creamy dessert topped with a burnt sugar caramel sauce. Nice way to end the meal on a sweet rich note. Also bought the Raisin Cinnamon Bread which was a bit too sweet for me but works well as a Pain Perdu/French toast, & Jalapeno Cheese bread, which has a touch of piquancy & pungent green chile taste, would be great with prosciutto or pastrami. They were both heavy & substantial in weight & heft. Glad I bought the two loaves. I rarely give 5 stars, but Homeboy Bakery deserves 5+ Yelp stars for all the good it does by hiring people in need and nurturing economic independence so important for the creation of a stable community. I love this bakery, it has a great mission!! Homeboy employs former gang members and ex-convicts to give them job training so they can work in other industries and lead productive lives. The bakery is only one of their many industries. My favorite drink to get here is Angela's potion!! It's a green juice with pineapple, green apple maybe? and green vegetables that just tastes delicious and amazing (I don't taste the veggies tbh but I know I'm consuming them so it makes me feel good hehe). In terms of bread loaves, GET THE CINNAMON BREAD or the pretzel buns. Holy moly they are delicious and so addictive. The bakery is also full of a ton of delicious pastries and baked goods. The coffee cake by far is the standout-- with a delicious crumbly top and being so moist in texture, it is my absolute favorite. The danishes are also good (apple, peach, cream cheese). If you're coming close to closing time (or okay with buying their day-old baked goods) many of their treats are just $1! A TOTAL STEAL and so so worth it. read more

I was in the area for a weekend trip, and - having read the book Tattoos on the Heart by Father Greg Boyle - wanted to see the place for myself. I arrived right after the cafe had closed for the day, but their door was open so i walked in.  The staff welcomed me but said they were closed, then promptly offered me free pastries and a smoothie! They were so gracious and kind, apologizing profusely for being closed.  It was ok tho - there honestly is not too much to see in the cafe, but i got the gist.  I hope more organizations like this can form in the inner cities to give gang members a place to do good work.  God bless you, Father Boyle. read more
