Singapore rice noodles
Michael H.

I ordered Singapore rice noodleswith chicken and it was supposed to have vegetable. I got three strips of peppers and one small piece of what appears to be.bok choy and some beans spouts. One thing a self proclaimed vegetarian, friendly restaurant should not be skimping on the veggies. Dish was tasteless, greasy and had very little seasoning.

Mee goreng with chicken

Cute little spot, came for lunch. Was greeted by the waiter who was pretty friendly throughout the whole meal. Started with the roti paratha, which is a must when we come to Malaysian restaurants. There were two slices of roti and taste-wise they were pretty standard. The dipping sauce was up to par-nothing terribly unique about it. The mee goreng was super average. The noodles were nice but there wasn't as much flavor as I was hoping. Would definitely recommend asking for soy sauce and chili oil to mix in. Pork rib noodle soup was nice. There was a good amount of meat and it was nicely tender-easy to bite off the bone. The broth itself was pretty flavorful (benefited also from the chili oil). Overall worth the try if you like Malaysian food.

I like the dumplings. Nice people and fast service. The dumplings sauce is a little salty but good.

I have some great friends, and this outing proved just that. I planned a Sunday field trip,…read moresomething I'd like to implement monthly, to the African American Museum for the Ruth E. Carter Afro futurism in Costume Design exhibition (Sinners, Wakanda Forever, etc.). And what do you need on a field trip? Lunch! We looked at the options around us, considered dietary restrictions, and decided Penang was the place for us. And they did not disappoint! Service was great... We were immediately seated. The weather was a bit chilly, and when we requested a new space away from the door, we were accommodated without incident. When I tell you the roti with curry changed my life?? I could eat that everyday and not get tired of it?! It's sooo perfect! Sheesh! We ordered a lot of different dishes, so we kind of shared around the table, leaving nothing to be desired. The green curry seafood in clay pot was delicious! I mean, every variation of curry I tasted was somehow the best curry. Haha The mango fish was sooo good! The fried vegetable dumplings were amazing. I will surely be back. I don't even care if I have to get it delivered, I will be enjoying this food again!

I've been here multiple times since moving to Philly, and Penang has always been my go-to spot for…read moreMalaysian food... but honestly, that might be changing. The food quality has noticeably gone downhill over the past few months. To start, my party of four asked for a pot of hot tea. The server told us it would be $5, which is fine--especially since it was freezing outside and the restaurant itself was cold (the heat didn't seem to be on). But near the middle of the meal, I asked for a refill (literally just more hot water), and the server came back with the owner/manager and said it would be another $5. That's ridiculous. The tea is already made--charging another $5 for hot water is wild. The service didn't help either. The server was pretty stoic, and the whole interaction felt awkward, especially while I was trying to order off a QR code menu that had zero descriptions of the dishes. That lack of explanation definitely caused issues. For example, we ordered the Singapore rice noodles expecting something curry-based, but it tasted like a sweet-and-sour ketchup sauce instead. Not good--and totally avoidable if the menu actually explained what the dish was. As for the food, the roti canai was disappointing. The curry was watered down and lacked flavor compared to previous visits, though I'll give credit where it's due--the roti itself was nicely toasted. I don't know what changed, but something clearly did, and it feels like a leadership issue. Overall, this visit was really underwhelming, and I won't be coming back anytime soon unless things seriously turn around here.

We were very excited to discover Malay nearby in Morristown, and we had to check it out. We ordered the Malay Prawn Mee, Chicken Sambal, and the Roti Canai. Roti Canai is one of my favorite Malaysian dishes, but this didn't quite hit the spot. The roti wasn't soft and dip-able. It was kind of flaky and kept falling apart every time I tried to use it to scoop up some curry. The curry was a little watery and not all that flavorful, and I defintiely would've appreciated more than just one or two chunks of potato and chicken. The chicken sambal and soup were additionally a bit disappointing. The chicken sambal was just okay for me, and the flavor didn't really blow me out of the water. It almost felt like something I could make at home. The soup similarly did not have a particularly rich or flavorful broth, and left me a little dissapointed. Another thing that really influences my review is how cold it was inside. It got even colder when people opened and closed the door. It was so cold that our food didn't seem hot. I think the cold air cooled it off instantly and we were left eating room temperature chicken and soup.

We got a Nasi Lemak and a few Kaya Toasts, along with a Kopi Tarik. Everything was really good! The Kaya toast was bigger than what you'd get in Asia, with more Kaya in it too, but just as delicious with a comforting flavor. Nasi Lemak is my favorite all time dish, and this one hit the spot as well. It came with a generous amount of anchovies/peanuts and the sambal it came with was great. If I had to nitpick, I do wish the rice had a bit more flavor, but not a big deal. The kopi was really good, though I wish it came earlier with the toast instead of after we got all our food. Not a big deal, and service was good other than that. The restaurant had a good amount of tables and barstool seating, although it filled up completely by 1pm! Some items really shine, while others feel a bit flat. The Hainanese chicken was disappointing to say the least, it was very dry. The kaya toast on the other hand was a big win, subtle coconut flavor and floral pandan comes through with the cream filling between buttery toast. The calamansi drink was very artificial and overly sweet.

I was WOWED by the shrimp with lady fingers (okra), seamless service (reminiscent of a well-oiled machine), and an unexpectedly large interior. --- I dined as a party of two for lunch on Sunday. When we first entered, we were shocked at just how large the interior of Banana Leaf was as compared to the exterior. It is also decorated very fun inside. We ordered the mama's chicken, shrimp with lady fingers, and homemade roti canai. Just a note that the most updated menu is online instead of the photos here. (Also rice is not included with the entrées, but needs to be ordered separately.) (1) Shrimp with Lady Fingers- I would come back for just this again and again. It was not too salty, and it was very flavorful (just the right amount of fishy), and the okra was cooked just perfectly. I am a little bias as an okra fan, but I LOVED this dish. My only issue is that the shrimp wasn't deveined. (2) Homemade Roti Canai- The roti was very flaky and had an excellent texture. I guess it's no surprise that it's the biggest thing advertised on the menu. The curry was pretty standard that came with it. It was just a little strange to me that the roti canai was completely cold when it came out. (3) Mama's Chicken- The chicken was dry for us, probably as a result of the smaller pieces being fried. Overall, it was pretty OK, but we wouldn't order this again. The service was excellent- food was quick to come out & anytime we finished a dish, needed water, or needed the check, the servers were at the table before we had to say anything. Totally streamlined!

Roti Canai - The piece of roti was huge, a big portion for 2 people which we enjoyed. The curry was light and a little sweet paired with the thin and chewy roti. Pad Thai - A very classic dish. It was mildly spicy which gave a good kick and it had the classic flavors being sour, sweet, savory and nutty at the same time. The noodles were a nice texture with the crunchier bean sprouts, the tender shrimp and chewy tofu. We also tried the Hainanese Chicken which was a bit different than what we were used to but it was still tender and soft. A solid place for dinner in the Chinatown area if you're wanting to get some different dishes.
