This restaurant is really a little bit more of a store/takeout place selling combo meals with rice and an entree with the alternative option of purchasing boxes of their different meat dishes. I've been here serveral times and generally opt for the latter to go, usually making additional vegetable and rice on the side at home. The portions here are huge and great value for the price, and the flavors of everything i have tried here are delicious. The owners are also incredibly sweet and will often let you try items and new offerings they are creating when you stop by. They accept venmo for payment as well. Overall I cant recommend this place enough and will have to add photos after my next visit. read more

My friends and I stumbled into this place to seek shelter from rain and some Indonesian comfort food. It's a hole in the wall mom and pop restaurant, tucked away on the corner of 11th and Moore. The food is ready to serve behind the display window at the front counter. The woman helping us was friendly and more than happy to point and explain what each dish was to us. You can choose 3 entrees over rice for just $7. We ordered 2 plates, one with 3 meats and one with 3 veggies, along with a soda and bottled water all for just $18! The portion sizes were massive and we had ample leftovers between the 3 of us. We couldn't get over what a steal it was, and if we lived nearby we would probably frequent this place regularly for a cheap but filling and tasty meal. Our favorite pick was the spicy beef, and I also enjoyed the fritters that came on the side. The veggies were fine, nothing to write home about, the proteins are the star of the show. I'd probably stop by again next time I'm in the area but wouldn't make a special trip just for the food. read more

I always feel iffy giving 3 stars, but there wasn't really anything that wowed me when my boyfriend and I picked up food for dinner last night. The buffet-style food that looked like it'd been sitting out all day wasn't an immediate turnoff, I just wish that it was actually warm. I got the spicy beef, which was pretty great, but the chicken dish was dry and didn't have much taste, which really disappointed me since I've heard a lot of great things about Indonesian food. The plus side is that for the price, the food excelled for the most part. My boyfriend got the beef stew and he seemed to like it (it was only okay to me), but seeing as how our food combined came out to $14, it was probably the cheapest "date night" we've ever had. Definitely wouldn't come back if we weren't in the neighborhood, but it's worth a try if you are in South Philly. read more

This is basically a small mom and pop restaurant. I was not sure at first upon entering the place, but don't judge the book by its cover. There are some ready made food in the heated containers in the front, you get to choose 1 meat and 2 veggies for $7.50. I chose mackerel, collard greens, and spicy tofu. I also added a veggie fritter. As you can see in my photo the portion is plentiful. What this place lacks in decor and ambiance it more than makes up with delicious food. I asked the owner which regional cooking this is, and she said Surabaya (Java). Parking around the restaurant may be difficult because it is a typical S. Philly residential block, but if you drive around you are bound to find a spot. read more

What a tasty corner Indonesian eatery has turned up in South Philly across from Neumann-Goretti High School ... and just a block from the popular East Passyunk foodie strip. Ramayana is run by a very friendly couple from Surabaya on the eastern section of the island of Java in Indonesia. It only has a couple of tables and it's not fancy inside ... although a couple of Indonesian artifacts adorn its walls. But then there's the food and that is why one should support this place. Everyday there is an Indonesian buffet that is constantly changing. No matter - the new dishes seem as tasty as the old. They also have a menu of Nasi (rice) dishes that are prepared on the spot. I really enjoyed the Rendang from the buffet as well as the creamed kale and tofu with white rice. Both the red and green sambals accompanying the meal had some kick and genuine flavor. The potato perkedel was a filling side order. Oh and how much did all this cost. The answer is six dollars. Unbelievable...totally unbelievable!! This establishment might seem sorta like a hole in the wall, but it won't make a hole in your pocket. It is a long way to an eatery like this on a street corner in Jakarta...it's a short distance to Ramayana in South Philly. Go!!! read more

This is a classic "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant without the terror of grime or sketchy surroundings. Located just off Passyunk Ave, there are three, blue-clothed tables tucked neatly into the small, tidy space with a glass enclosed hot tray table up front. You can select two dishes with rice for $6 or three dishes with rice for $7. There are free water bottles available which you will definitely need because the food is unstintingly well seasoned and unafraid of spices. I went with a friend and we ordered a selection of corn fritters, stir-fried tofu, a stewed mackerel dish, spicy beef stew, and spicy, marinated eggs. I loved the mackerel dish. Loooooved it. It was so well seasoned without overpowering the fish and went perfectly with my pile of white rice. I honestly could've had three giant bowls of rice topped just with the mackerel. There wasn't a single bone throughout the dish either. The spice definitely builds up on your tongue and I was glad to have the corn fritters and tofu to cool down between bites. My friend thought the beef stew was incredibly tasty but she didn't start sweating until eating the eggs. The corn fritter was still tasty even tho it had been sitting for a while since being fried. The thick, chewy texture worked really well with the greasiness and there were whole kernels of corn in there that helped the taste stay fresh. The man behind the counter was more than happy to describe every dish individually and told us to take our time, enjoy the food, and didn't ask that we pay up front. He also insisted we leave the plates and trays on the table rather than bringing them to the register. It was the friendliest service I've had with such authentic food; you usually have to resign yourself to one or the other but Ramayana has both. I have a feeling that I'll be going often, especially during cold winter days when I want something hot and spicy to warm me up. read more

We swung into this little corner restaurant around 7 at night on a weekday. It's a no frills Dive restaurant. The food is all pre-made counter bar for you to see in the Auntie lets you select a rice and then proteins and veggies G. I wasn't real really what the limit was so I went with one vegetable , a tofu, and a protein. the Indonesian fried rice was really good, with little bits of fried shallot or something crispy. The only downside is that it was pre-made and needed to be heated up prior. I had the Banana Leaf hearts which were a bit strong in flavor with a strange texture, but got better as you ate more of it, but there is a bit of a kick to it I think. the beef Curry Stew was very good in the beef super tender and flavorful. I had some type of tofu with tofu skin Curry or sauce and that was good as well. For their price which was about $10 each plate it was very good. The little pre-made fried wonton dumpling things sitting on the table were not very good. It was crispy a little soggy with minimal filling and I wasn't even sure what it was, either a bean or a meat paste. Couldn't decide between stir fried bean sprouts, or bitter melon w/daikon; so he gave me both.The beef was a bit salty (There wasn't a lot left and I'm hoping the flavors were concentrated from sitting in the steam table) and most pieces were really tough. Mackerel was flavorful and spicy. The vegetable choices really shined; and were a great accompaniment to the richness of the stews. I went to Neumann Goretti HS back in the days and always remembered this spot to be always changing from some Chinese takeout to some random sushi place then another Indonesian restaurant that's not even around anymore then it was vacant too for a long while. So glad finally Ramayana took over and added some variety to the wide array of East Passyunk restaurants. This is definitely one of those hole in the wall, authentic Indonesian "warung" style place. Typically you get a serving of rice with one protein side dish and one vegetable side dish. The dishes are being displayed behind the counter and you pick what you want and pay. The menu changes daily so if you're new to Indonesian food it can be a sweet surprise. I am particularly a fan of their spicy ikan cakalang. If you love spicy food, definitely try it! There are not that many seatings so people typically order for take out. Street parking all around but since I always order for to-go, I typically try my luck with parking at the Neumann Goretti lot since I know I'll be in and out in 5 minutes. read more

The beef rendang is very saucy and the taste is perfect. Not too sweet, still taste the beef while the perfect amount of savory flavor. Very addictive with white rice mixed in. The kale dish is also a wet saucy dish as well. Has more of a sour taste to it but balances the taste well when I eat it with the beef rendang. The best part, 2 large portions of each dish only set me back $12. Best combo of cheap good eats. I'll be back to try the other selections they have. read more

It's flavorful and cheap home-cooked Indonesian food, in the same vein as Hardena/Waroeng Surabaya down the street. Everything is in a hot case, and they give you a complimentary bottle of water with the meal. It's delicious, but sometimes the texture of some of the plates can be a bit off. For example, I once had the mackerel, and it was very tough and chewy. For about $7, you can choose two items over rice. $1 extra gets you a third. They also have good vegan and vegetarian options, including tempeh, tofu, and jackfruit. Note: they open at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, and even though they post the opening time as noon every other day, they often don't open at that time. read more

I love no-frill mom and pop stops, but I wasn't impressed. Everything was buffet style and had been sitting a while, which isn't the biggest issue since everything is of stewed variety. Green beans and Chinese veggies were just okay. The beef stew was ok. The meat was very lean and not that tender (also had been sitting out so some parts were dried out). The mackerel reminded me of eating sardines in a tomato paste. The folks that own this place are very friendly. You do get a lot of food for $7 (rice, three choices, and a drink). Why haven't I written a review for Ramayana Restaurant yet? Everything is great and I tell myself to try something different but usually end up seeing something I really liked the week before and getting the greatest hits. I highly recommend the beef rendang, tofu with tempe, kale, jackfruit, and pecel. I'm also a big fan of the tendon, but I know not everyone goes for that, so go ahead and pass it up if it's outside of your comfort zone. Ask them if they have anything special in the back for the day though - sometimes they have gado gado which they do exceptionally well. Also consider picking up one of the fried potato fritters they make. The couple/family that owns the place have been really kind and patient in explaining dishes to me each time I've gone as well, so don't be afraid to ask questions! Make sure you get some of the sambal oelek on the side, whatever you get. It's fiery and fantastic. read more

Comfort food consisting of mostly stewed food. The sambal has a bright, fresh taste which contrasts nicely to mostly heavy fare that is offered here. I am not an expert in this kind of Indonesian food, so I won't pretend I know anything. It is simply good. This kind of food is really great during colder weather. I like variety so I love that they have a daily menu in addition to their fixed menu. This is more "country" type or comfort Asian food. The price makes this place a no brainer. This place is excellent. Please check it out. The basic dish is a rice bowl with three entrees/options piled into it. I got the spicy eggplant, the squid, and the mackeral. You might not think you'll like those, but unless you have a strong aversion to seafood, you should at least try them. All three were well-spiced and delicious. I will warn you this: The entrees are kept in buffet style dishes, so they might initially look not fresh. The cook might also take your food in the back to heat it up. I really loved the jackfruit dish I had. The prices are also unbelievably low. We really enjoyed chatting with the man working about Indonesia- he gave us many tips for our future trip! For some reason,I always get good luck in finding legit family restaurant. Here I am - Ramayana! This is the very time I tried Indonesian food. I really LOVE it. The food to some extent reminds me of high pressure cooker cooked Chinese stew. All the flavors are soaked in the food. The price is awesome considering how much food you get. At first, I was skeptical about the look, then after my first bite, I have no regrets checking this place. I love their veggie options as well as the chicken curry. I live in Las Vegas, and visited this restaurant when I was in LA for a brief time on 5/26/19.
