Beef stew, spicy beef, curry chicken, corn fritter over rice
    Bianca Y.

My friends and I stumbled into this place to seek shelter from rain and some Indonesian comfort food. It's a hole in the wall mom and pop restaurant, tucked away on the corner of 11th and Moore. The food is ready to serve behind the display window at the front counter. The woman helping us was friendly and more than happy to point and explain what each dish was to us. You can choose 3 entrees over rice for just $7. We ordered 2 plates, one with 3 meats and one with 3 veggies, along with a soda and bottled water all for just $18! The portion sizes were massive and we had ample leftovers between the 3 of us. We couldn't get over what a steal it was, and if we lived nearby we would probably frequent this place regularly for a cheap but filling and tasty meal. Our favorite pick was the spicy beef, and I also enjoyed the fritters that came on the side. The veggies were fine, nothing to write home about, the proteins are the star of the show. I'd probably stop by again next time I'm in the area but wouldn't make a special trip just for the food.

Bomb bomb bomb!!!! Words cannot describe how much I LOVE THIS PLACE Regardless of what you order, you will NOT be disappointed my friend. My absolute favorite is the salmon. They use the fat cuts and skin of the salmon to cook (fry?) in the perfect combination of spices and oh man, the flavors are to die for! Trust me, you will be blessing your taste buds with ANYTHING you order! Super friendly staff who doesn't mind to add you extra rice if you add, cause you know you're low key fat, like me, heh

This place has amazing value and unforgettable flavors. This camouflaged gem piles on delicious authentic food for a great price. This place is takeout only, and the options are all visible from their front serving table. I highly recommend their beef rendang and tempeh tofu. The beef stew and spicy stew also pair amazing with their rice. And don't forget to get some of their delicious sambal. This place is a one of our favorite takeout places; try this place and find out why!

Never had this kind of food before, so I took the risk and tried it. It was GOOD! I had the beef stew (sorry! Don't know the names) with steamed rice, veggies in coconut gravy and some sort of fried veggies in a dough. You can taste everything is made out of scratch and fresh. I will try more Indonesian food if I see it again! Thank you!

This is basically a small mom and pop restaurant. I was not sure at first upon entering the place, but don't judge the book by its cover. There are some ready made food in the heated containers in the front, you get to choose 1 meat and 2 veggies for $7.50. I chose mackerel, collard greens, and spicy tofu. I also added a veggie fritter. As you can see in my photo the portion is plentiful. What this place lacks in decor and ambiance it more than makes up with delicious food. I asked the owner which regional cooking this is, and she said Surabaya (Java). Parking around the restaurant may be difficult because it is a typical S. Philly residential block, but if you drive around you are bound to find a spot.

Just fantastic. 1) I got the beef rendang, chicken curry, curried eggs, and jack fruit curry. 2) All that was just 7 bucks. What a deal. 3) Will definitely return.

South Philly's new corner Indonesian eatery
    Jeff H.

What a tasty corner Indonesian eatery has turned up in South Philly across from Neumann-Goretti High School ... and just a block from the popular East Passyunk foodie strip. Ramayana is run by a very friendly couple from Surabaya on the eastern section of the island of Java in Indonesia. It only has a couple of tables and it's not fancy inside ... although a couple of Indonesian artifacts adorn its walls. But then there's the food and that is why one should support this place. Everyday there is an Indonesian buffet that is constantly changing. No matter - the new dishes seem as tasty as the old. They also have a menu of Nasi (rice) dishes that are prepared on the spot. I really enjoyed the Rendang from the buffet as well as the creamed kale and tofu with white rice. Both the red and green sambals accompanying the meal had some kick and genuine flavor. The potato perkedel was a filling side order. Oh and how much did all this cost. The answer is six dollars. Unbelievable...totally unbelievable!! This establishment might seem sorta like a hole in the wall, but it won't make a hole in your pocket. It is a long way to an eatery like this on a street corner in Jakarta...it's a short distance to Ramayana in South Philly. Go!!!

It is buffet style, so all of the dishes are laid out on a food line and you order at the counter. I highly recommend the Nasi Padang ($14) as it was SO much food and everything was very delicious. The kale was cooked in coconut milk which was aromatic, creamy, and slightly spicy, but still retains that slightly bitter edge. The egg is coated in sambal which is definitely spicy but pairs so well with the rice. The beef was tender and fall apart and the sauce was thick and so flavorful. The chicken was also fall apart soft. The highlight of the dish was getting to eat each component with the coconut rice. The coconut rice is some of the best I've ever had!! It's hard to explain what it tastes like but it's the perfect blend of coconut, salty, sweet, and very savory. I would say it's much more traditional tasting compared to Sky Cafe (another popular Indonesian spot). They take cash/venmo/zelle (I think)! It is incredibly worth it for the price. Definitely want to support a smaller, local business!

They have a pre fix menu mostly (it changes every month), but on Saturdays, they do the giant Liwetan communal eating, which is served on a banana leaf and meant to be eaten with your hands. Let me just start by saying that we are Hardena groupies. I have almost broken my phone screen trying multiple times to get my hands on a #notpizza box during the pandemic. This was the brainchild of Chef Diana at Hardena, and it was truly one of the only bright spots from COVID. Anyway, this is Chef Diana's own restaurant (her family still owns Hardena), and while the flavors and sambal (hot sauce) are very similar to Hardena, she makes Indonesian food truly beautiful with her creativity. The plating is that of a Michelin star / James beard winning restaurant. I mean, just look at this giant dumpling that is shaped so beautifully and then really imaginatively placed inside a red cabbage leaf in a bowl. I'm used to Indonesian food being served from a warming tray in takeout boxes so this really blew my mind. They serve three different sauces (2 sambals and a sweet one). Everything was spectacular, and the dishes keep getting bigger in the 5 course pre fixe (not including dessert, but this was a very nice size). Each dish was explained to us carefully and gently delivered by Chef Diana's wife. There are only about 6 tables so reservations are limited (and you pre pay). They do have a vegan menu, but you have to let them know ahead of time or else they have to scramble (which they graciously did tonight for a walk in). They also gave my mom tea when she asked for it, even though that's not something they normally offer. The interior is super cute and well-decorated, and that pink neon sign really shines nicely through the window. I will have to try to resist temptation every time we pass this (which is often), but I'm already thinking about when we can go back! Don't sleep on Rice & Sambal!

I was WOWED by the shrimp with lady fingers (okra), seamless service (reminiscent of a well-oiled machine), and an unexpectedly large interior. --- I dined as a party of two for lunch on Sunday. When we first entered, we were shocked at just how large the interior of Banana Leaf was as compared to the exterior. It is also decorated very fun inside. We ordered the mama's chicken, shrimp with lady fingers, and homemade roti canai. Just a note that the most updated menu is online instead of the photos here. (Also rice is not included with the entrées, but needs to be ordered separately.) (1) Shrimp with Lady Fingers- I would come back for just this again and again. It was not too salty, and it was very flavorful (just the right amount of fishy), and the okra was cooked just perfectly. I am a little bias as an okra fan, but I LOVED this dish. My only issue is that the shrimp wasn't deveined. (2) Homemade Roti Canai- The roti was very flaky and had an excellent texture. I guess it's no surprise that it's the biggest thing advertised on the menu. The curry was pretty standard that came with it. It was just a little strange to me that the roti canai was completely cold when it came out. (3) Mama's Chicken- The chicken was dry for us, probably as a result of the smaller pieces being fried. Overall, it was pretty OK, but we wouldn't order this again. The service was excellent- food was quick to come out & anytime we finished a dish, needed water, or needed the check, the servers were at the table before we had to say anything.
