This is my go-to spot whenever I'm craving Indonesian food in Philadelphia. Truly authentic flavors--not mediocre or watered-down dishes. Some standout menu items: the kwetiau goreng tastes just like home, especially with the lapchong--yuuummmm so good! The kwetiau siram was equally delicious. The capcay, while not exactly like what you'd get in Indonesia, is still the best I've had in the U.S. On my most recent visit, I had the nasi ayam goreng, which also one of my favorites. The sayur asam is perfectly balanced, and the ayam goreng kuning is also delicious. What I really appreciate about Djakarta Cafe is the consistency--the flavors have been great for years and that's what keeps me coming back. And the service is always wonderful too. We live in the neighborhood so we ordered takeout to try with our family. We ordered chicken satay, lamb satay, Djakarta noodle, djakarta stir fried egg noodle, and the beef rendang rice. On first impression when picking up our order, it's a small restaurant that is dimly lit but very cozy. Seating for a large party would be difficult, which makes sense, but perfect for takeout. The chicken satay and lamb satay were delicious appetizers and the accompanied peanut and sweet soy sauces were perfect. I found myself dipping the sauces after every bite! As for the Djakarta noodle and Djakarta stir fried egg noodle, I ended up loving the Djakarta noodle more. Not to say that the stir fried egg noodle wasn't good, but the Djakarta noodle was much more fragrant and unlike anything I've had in a while. The ingredients are combined and lend different textures that made me wish I ordered two. The stir fried egg noodle was delicious in its own right and the sweet/savoriness of the noodles added another level of flavor to the meal. As for the beef rendang, the beef is tender, well seasoned, and with the rice, makes for a hearty meal. I think the kale soup was also a welcomed addition since it was creamy, a bit sweet, reminiscent of curry, and contrasting with the savoriness of the beef. I'd definitely order from here again but next time, I'd order much more since the takeout portions can be quite small for the price! read more

I believe where D'jakarta is located is where Sky Cafe was located long time ago. It is a cozy space with just enough tables. Parking is always a challenge in this neighborhood, but fortunately we were able to get one (it was around 7pm on a Saturday). We ordered vegetable fritters, Nasi Kuning, and Nasi Rendang. The flavours are really nice, not as spicy as other Indonesian restaurants (thankful for that). The price point is nice, but compared to Sky Cafe the portions are smaller. The service was friendly and laid back (in a good way), but I was surprised for a Saturday night the place was not busy (only about 2-3 tables occupied). I would go back again for sure! read more

There's nothing like trying an unfamiliar ethnic cuisine and just trying things you can't pronounce or have any idea what food products it may contain. Just shrug your shoulders and go for it! First off, the condiment dish on the table drew my attention. We couldn't get enough of the sweetly but tart pickled cucumbers that were in a little container. Honestly, I would've gotten this entirely as a side dish, that's how much I loved it. Kudos to the server who saw us devour the entire container before our food arrived and brought us another full one. The only dish I really knew was the beef rendeng - a kind of slightly spicy beef stew in a tomatoey sauce that is similar to the Cuban dish of ropa vieja. Oh my! The combo dish came with a curry like soup with some sort of kale in it that I loved. And a hard-boiled egg with an unusual little sauce on top of it with a couple of shrimp. WHAT? I'll take a little bit of everything, thank you very much. We splurged on an avocado smoothie, unlike anything I've ever had before - with a scoop of chocolate ice cream in it. HELLO? Had an amazing, flavorful lunch at d'jakarta cafe. It's a small place with limited seating and friendly/helpful staff. The pickled cucumber on the table were crispy and on the sweet side. Delicious and authentic food! I had to wait about 30 minutes for a table on a Sunday afternoon, given that it is a small restaurant is that was popping. Every table was filled despite being 2 pm in the afternoon. We got the beef rendang and R1 dish with fried chicken. We also got the shrimp rolls as an appetizer, which was very unique. A10/A11 Chicken Liver and Gizzard - I don't know what marinade they put on these skewers but it has any meat part tasting divine. Highly recommend! N5 Stir Fry Egg Noodle - a bit smaller on the portions for noodles and reminded me of my mom using ramen noodles and tossing frozen veggies and eggs into the ramen. R2 Traditional Grilled Chicken - came with fried tofu which was firm, tamarind soup which I enjoyed quite a bit. Wish there was more chicken as the chicken dries up during preparation. Solid! They allowed for a dog to come in which did not sit well with me. It was wet and dreary outside and the space is small. We came on a Friday night and we didn't have to wait to be seated. This place is located in south Philly so parking might be a bit difficult depending on time of day. However, we didn't have any issue finding a spot and there was actually one right outside the store. The staffs were very friendly. We got a couple dishes to share 1. Sweet and sour squid 2. Braise pork with sweet soy sauce 3. Djakarta egg noodles with seafood 4. Beef rendang I liked the squid dish the best. My partner liked the braised pork dish the best. I have a new obsessed with this sweet soy sauce (kecap) and I think that's what they used in the squid dish and maybe satay dish. All the entrées are flavorful and delicious. My only complain would be the portion size are fairly small. 3 of us shared 4 items but I'm sure we could have eaten 2 more dishes. I would highly recommend getting a couple extra appetizers or dishes to shared. They have so many options on the menu I define you need to come back again to try more items. Phenomenal food that is Indonesian. I analyzed previous Yelp elite reviews to choose the Braised Pork and Sweet & Sour Squid. They must be great, they were sold out. Instead I ordered the Lamb Satay and Stir Fried Egg Noodles. The Lamb Satay comes with a generous portion of grilled lamb that is tender and marinated deeply with savory Indonesian flavor, finished with a char. This is served with outstanding spicy ginger soy sauce and a shrimp peanut sauces. The noodles were fresh, savory, and just greasy enough. Shrimp, meat, and veggies are scattered amongst the heaping bowl of noodles. I can't praise them enough. This meal was excellent. read more

This was a very cute spot that we went to while we were in Philadelphia. The restaurant is very quaint and is good for a small group. It became very bustling around lunchtime. I was excited to try the many delicous dishes on the menu and decided to grab Chicken Satay and Chicken Liver as apps followed by Nasi Goreng Special, Nasi Babi Kecap, and Bakmi Goreng Djakarta. This was followed by a yummy dessert/drink, Es Cendol. We also grabbed a box of Peyek to munch on. Overall, everything was delicious! I'm not a huge fan of liver but the liver wasn't too bad and was around a 7/10. The satay was tasty although I wished it was a bit crispier. It was around an 8/10. Nasi Goreng is one of my favorite dishes and this did not disappoint. It was flavorful, full of chicken, sausage, and shrimp and I enjoyed it a lot. A 9/10 for me. The Nasi Babi Kecap was hands down my favorite and a solid 10/10. I loved how tasty the pork was and the sauce was perfect! The Bakmi Goreng Djakarta was also very tasty, with the perfect consistency for the noodles. This was also a 9/10. I enjoyed the Es Cendol and felt it was an 8/10. Lastly was the peyek, which was also very tasty. Another 8/10. This is a great spot that seems to be a go-to for the Indonesian community in the area. I had food delivered from this restaurant on a Sunday when I didn't feel like leaving home. It was also my first time trying it out. I was very impressed with the thoughtful packaging (the wet ingredients were not mixed with the dry ones, which kept the crispiness of the wontons in the noodles). I had the bakmi djakarta for lunch and was very pleased that the ingredients still seemed fairly fresh despite the almost 20mins commute. There were so many complementary flavors and textures going on in the bakmi. It is one of the few dishes where chicken, pork, meatball, fishballs, and eggs go well together. I saved up the beef rendang rice for dinner. While the beef rendang was good (not the best I've had), there was just too little of it. The telur belado (chilied eggs) and shrimp were done pretty well. I also enjoyed the creamy and savory kale soup that came along with it. Back again after a few months for lunch. The food is even MORE mouthwatering than I remembered, and the staff friendly as ever with a cozy, small aesthetic. I got the beef Rendang - a solid 6oz of beautifully slow-cooked beef with semi-spicy seasonings was quite filling. I also got a side of vegetables, which were simple yet a perfect accompaniment to the Beef main dish. Ooh...I love this place! After stumbling upon D'jakarta during my DoorDash search for a lunch spot, my coworkers and I decided to try them out. What a good decision that was! Our group tried Beef Rendang, braised pork with sweet soy sauce, wonton soup, and djakarta noodles with a side of fried bananas and we all loved our orders. I haven't had many Indonesian dishes before so I'm especially glad to have found them. As a cherry on top to our DoorDash experience with this place, our orders came in nice reusable bags. THE FOOD HERE IS SO GOOD AND SO UNDERRATED. We came here on a Wednesday night and the place was virtually empty. We ordered a lamb satay, and fried tofu to share. The lamb satay was SO good. Probably one of the best I've ever had! The lamb was super tender and juicy, and the seasoning complemented it really well (as opposed to just being covered in cumin). 5/5 and would definitely get again! The fried tofu was really yummy too! It was lightly fried on the outside and perfectly tender on the inside. It came with two different dipping sauces, and I would highly recommend dipping them to get the full experience. For entree we got the beef rendang and the bakso super. The beef rendang was alright. The beef rendang portion was extremely small- much smaller than I had expected and flavors were muted compared to others I've had in the past. However, the coconut kale soup that came with it was INCREDIBLE as was the egg. The potato and tofu was also really sweet and savory. If there was a way to just get those three, I would skip the beef rendang part haha. The bakso super soup was relatively light. It comes with a huge homemade meatball with an egg inside and a smaller beef meatball. The smaller one was reminiscent of the beef balls in hotpot or those that can be bought frozen. The bigger one was pretty good, although not as flavorful as I was hoping for. Everything here is really cheap and the portions are just right to be full but not too full. This place offers decent Indonesian food. I don't find it wowing but it is also not bad. I ordered 4 items as delivery: fried chicken platter, shrimp rollade, ice cendol and ropang. Price wise, I think it's pretty normal for the portion. The fried chicken lack to me lacks flavor, the fried tofu looked like it was fried in old oil (it had a dark tint and a weird taste) but the soup that came with it was good and is a nice touch. I'm not positive on what the soup is in English, in Indonesian is sayur asem, which in direct translation is veggie sour soup? It has the right amount of sour to me and it was refreshing. Shrimp rollade is alright. It was a bit salty for my taste bud. Something that I would pass if I ever order from them again. Ice cendol overall was refreshing but there is a graininess with the drink that was slightly odd to me. If you're a texture type of person, this might not be for you. My favorite of them all is the ro-pang. It's simple but complicated. It's thick toast with cheese, chocolate and coconut egg spread, that all may sound weird but it's really good. It is a combination or sweet and salty with a hint of custardy (I know this is not a word). I would suggest trying it out because out of the 4 dishes I ordered, the only one I would reorder is the ro-pang. But overall, it's alright. A middle ground for me. It's not a definite 'no' going to the restaurant or reordering from them but it won't be a go to place either. read more

Wow! What a hidden gem! The green noodles were so good, had that el dente texture to it. The grilled whole fish was on point, not too expensive $20 where any where else it would have easily been $35. The shrimp I got was good too including all the sauces they give! Everything at this restaurant was on point and the prices were reasonable. The food here is amazing, this place is such a gem! I came here with a rather large group and the staff was super friendly and accommodating about our reservation which I really appreciated. We ordered a mix of rice, noodles, curry, soup, and other things. I wish I took a picture, but you're just going to have to take my word for it that everything was delicious. The chicken satay skewer was full of flavor and tender, it slid right off the stick. The fried rice was very tasty and even though it was such a simple dish, it was very memorable. The curries and noodles we tried were also incredible, you truly can't go wrong with anything on the menu. The Happy Soda was less sweet than I thought it would be but I really liked the jelly in it. Sambal Pompano! D'Jarkata is one of my new favorite restaurants in Philly. I don't dig the secluded residential location nor the ridiculous lack of parking, but the food here is really delicious. Over the course of several nights, I tried much of the menu here. One thing that makes everything better here is the Sambal. You could basically put this on anything here and it would jack up the flavor 10 fold. Seriously, ask for a take home container, or bring a sandwich baggie with you, and take some of this sambal home. That before mentioned Sambal on top of the Pompano is awesome! There are two versions of the Pompano, grilled and fried, of which the grilled is really extraordinary. The grilled has this extra smoky charcoal flavor that is missing from the fried version. Both pompano options are fantastic accompanied with a sweet onion soy sauce. Both pompano options are my favorites here and I've had it each time with little if any deviation in quality each time. The Beef Rendang may not be the best I've had in Philly but it sure is super tender and moist. Layered over a coconut rice, it's truly sublime. The entree portion was a great size and perfect for sharing with 2 or 3 as it can be rich. The platter option affords more variety but I'd forgo the variety for more of this Rendang. Of the appetizers, the chicken satay skewers are served with a healthy ladle of satay sauce on top. Beautiful juicy thigh meat perfectly cooked over charcoal served with a wedge of lime that isn't required. Definitely Recommend! The mixed egg noodles can be customized for example, for those that don't eat pork. This was accommodated with little impact to flavor. The egg noodles just add great texture and flavor. Having tried both versions, I definitely dig the version with pork. Definitely recommend. The sweet and sour squid entree was super tender accompanied with a sauce that was tasty. Similarly the Fried Shrimp Roulade was crispy but a little bland. The sambal sauce helped to make it much better. While the before mentioned were fantastic, there were some disappointments on the menu, namely the lamb skewers and the shrimp a la carte entrees. Both of these items were over cooked and in the case of the lamb satay, the satay sauce was on the side and not slathered on top like the chicken version. No amount of satay sauce or lime wedges could have saved the lamb from being edible. It was dry and hard to chew. The shrimp, while being overcooked, also suffered from the lack of proper deveining. These were not little shrimp and that simple effort mistake took away from what could have a been a really great dish. Hopefully they were one time issues that can be corrected in the future. Finally the operating hours are rather tight for an early dinner and the tight parking situation doesn't help. Even still D'Jarkata is definitely a must try. read more

I actually really enjoyed coming here! The service was a bit aloof but I honestly think it's cultural more than anything. I decided to jump out of my comfort zone and order the es cendol, which is a rice jelly drink with coconut milk, which reminds me of pandan if you've ever had it. Very Southeast Asian. The stir-fried egg noodle dish (Bakmi Goreng Djakarta) was definitely the highlight for me of the things we ordered. I guess because it was familiar as far as Asian food goes. I also liked the Ketoprak, but I think because the flavor profile of that dish was more subtle, it kind of paled in comparison. As a final dive, we tried the ropang, which is the most Asian thing I've ever eaten (and I ate a lot of strange combos in 5 months in Korea). It's literally shredded cheese on top of a Nutella grilled sandwich with sprinkles. It wasn't disgusting, but it's...definitely an acquired taste. I'm no expert on Indonesian food and I'm primarily a plant based gal, but I still really enjoy D'jakarta, a small friendly authentic corner spot deep in the heart of South Philly! So far we've tried the happy lychee and happy mango drinks and enjoyed them both, with the mango being a favorite. It's piled high with tons of fruit and had a waterice/smoothie consistency. Definitely go for one of their fruity drinks, even if just to split and taste! We're big fans of ketoprak, a traditional vegetarian dish from Jakarta, which consists of tofu, vegetables and rice cake, rice vermicelli served in peanut sauce! It's so flavorful! *They can and will sub the fried egg to make it vegan! I love their tamarind soup! It's located on the back sheet of the menu and it's easy to miss. It comes in small or large with a sweet and sour base, cabbage, peanuts and potatoes! Most recently we added a side of their delicious coconut rice for just $2 to bulk it up! So good!!! We've tried their spring rolls which are perfectly fried and crispy! They come with an insane tangy peanut dipping sauce I could eat an entire bowl of!! Hubs recently had the chicken wontons and said while they were tasty, they had too much dough. He prefers the satay. The menu can be a bit overwhelming to newbies and/or plant based folks, but it's definitely worth venturing out for! I have yet to be disappointed by anything!
