In my mind, "The Nickel" is an iconic fixture on the square in Millersburg. I hadn't been there in over a decade and looked forward to returning. My latest visit was... not great. The staff was incredibly kind and apologetic as they explained they were "swamped" (several tables remained empty) and the kitchen was backed up. I overheard something about a shortage of menus. The bar was out of Yuengling. Our food arrived about an hour after we were seated, and it was... food. My pizza was decent and larger than expected, though a bit soggy. Others in my party were served a small, shriveled, naked baked potato (well, it was wrapped in foil, but no toppings were provided), a fish sandwich featuring very little fish, and a pile of fries dripping with grease. The atmosphere is fine: the bar side is dim and different. The dining room is clean and cohesive. But the overall experience left something to be desired. read more

Stumbled on in on a cold rainy Saturday afternoon for a bite to eat. Blown away and overwhelmed at the very large menu! They have something for everyone. I will agree that the prices are high for the location and the portion size. The family enjoyed the crab balls and the onion rings were cooked to perfection. I liked the cocktails. I ordered a regular cheeseburger and it was more like slider sized. You do have to upgrade and pay for fries vs. chips which is unfortunate. Worst breakfast I've ever had in my life. Service was extremely slow. My wife's eggs were undercooked. Was supposed to have cheese and bacon on the crazy eggs, it had neither. I ordered the Philly cheesesteak omelette the menu specifically says grilled onion, it came out with completely raw onions that were only warm because they were inside the omelett. I called to make a reservation for mother's day and the woman was rude and unprofessional. She was so useless that I had to have my husband call back the next day to speak to the manager just to get a table. We were given two tables across from one another as that was all that was left. On the day of we arrived at 11am and waited at least ten minutes to be seated. Eventually a woman with a dry personality came over and seated us. We looked at the menu (which did not include a children's menu) waiting for our server while the server at the neighboring table chatted and laughed with the guests as she took their order with her back to us. We needed a highchair so my husband went over to her as she was the only person in the area and we did not have a server yet and said "excuse me, could I get a highchair?" She looked at him visibly irritated, gestured and said "its right there". We looked at each other applauded. My husband retrieved the chair and we seated our daughter. We had a question about our tables, being that they were across from one another, as there were no guests at the table next to us yet. So again my husband asked the same server if the manager was available, she replied "why what's the problem?" After 10 minutes or so a server came over and said I'm not your server but I can you guys some drinks. We asked for waters and 1 apple juice. After another 10 minutes the waitress from the neighboring table brought us our drinks, we were shocked as she had not greeted us in the 20+ minutes since we arrived or even acknowledged our presence! Ms. I can't be bothered was actually our server, Erica. She took our order and at 12:40pm it finally arrived. We watched her using a serving table twice to place her tray and serve platters, when she got to us she did no such thing, instead she leaned the large round tray on the table between my children, and passed a dish across my teen daughters face! I had to ask her to move the tray of hot dishes away from our 2 year old! My mother had broccoli, one bunch was fresh and nicely cooked the other was dark, overcooked and looked like it had been out for some time. The dishes were ok some were just bland. I had the pizza with everything and my wife got the cheeseburger sub. The pizza is the best in the Harrisburg area in my opinion. Great sub as well. Very disappointing. The wife and I had been talking about visiting this place for awhile. I ignored past yelpers and thought we'd give the 3 star restaurant a shot but we should have one listened! The menu looks splendid so many great looking options, tons of seafood, steak and a variety of almost everything. Once out into practice though it fell way short. My wife ordered broiled shrimp and scallops, overcooked and flavorless. My son got fettichini alfredo with shrimp, the alfredo sauce was horribly bland and the shrimp overcooked again. I ordered a steak and it was just ok. All in all after a hundred dollar bill and 2 out of the 3 meals only half eaten we we're very disappointed and won't even be returning. One thing that struck me about this place, it has four 60 dollar meals on the menu, kinda feel like that's pretty cocky for a place like this. I've been to really nice restaurants with amazing food that didn't have a meal that was 60 bucks. From Baltimore seafood to Destin FL seafood some of the best meals I've had and no 60 entree. We planned to eat at Williams French Fry stand, but it was just too cold to eat outside, and we didn't want to eat in our car.. so even though the reviews here were iffy, we decided to try the Wooden Nickel. I'm so glad we did! The staff was friendly, helpful, and attentive. The food was really good. The place is clean, has nice big windows where you can look out on the town square, and several vantage points where you can see the entire kitchen. As another reviewer mentioned, that is impressive. I had a chicken gyro that was really, really good. It came with potato chips and a pickle, and was a lot of food. We ate here as a late lunch, and ended up skipping supper completely. My husband had a hamburger, and ordered a side of onion rings. They asked how he would like his hamburger cooked, and it came just as he ordered. The onion rings were thick sliced and well cooked in a batter coating, not the crumbly breading type. Very good. Had we had our four teenagers along with us, this would have been an expensive place to eat. For my husband and me alone, our bill was $25, before tip. We'd spend the about the same amount at a big chain to eat, and we prefer to support small businesses instead, so this was acceptable for us. The only cost that bothered me was $1.65 for a cup of black coffee. That seems pretty high. The menu is extensive. I was surprised to see so many options. The table across from us had scallops and the woman commented frequently on how good they were. There were quite a few full tables, at 2:00 on a Saturday afternoon. It is not a fancy place. While I understand having to close and clean the restaurant this person was quite rude. We were trying to support a local business but won't be back again. We came in a little Leary because of the reviews but we decided to give it a try. Unfortunately they were right. The wait was pleasant but very slow in getting our orders. And the place was not even full. I believe they forgot our orders because we waited so long for it to arrive. My chicken wings were burnt like it was quickly reheated on the grill and my friend's food was microwaved to reheat. His was filet mignon, which was ruined after microwaved. To understand the Wooden Nickel, one must understand Millersburgers. The guy who owns the Wooden Nickel knows his audience and he gives them what they want. He's built a very successful business because of that. You will never find anything exotic or spicy on the menu at the Nickel. They're not flying in special ingredients from parts unknown, they serve meat & potatoes and they do it pretty well. The menu is pretty varied, a lot of red meat and chicken. Anything off the Specials menu will be good. They know how to steam broccoli to just the perfect point. The burgers are good and they serve Martin's potato chips with their sandwiches. Their pizza is actually really good and may be the best thing on the menu. The restaurant is clean and nicely appointed - let's call it "Upper Dauphin Upscale". The Manager seems pretty on the ball and you don't often see the help (mostly teenagers) standing around doing nothing. Food is served hot and properly prepared, I can't recall ever sending anything back. The bar staff is also generally prompt and friendly but, despite the full bar, does not have a wine list. You're stuck with whatever is in the jug. I sincerely doubt that the wine selection plays any role in the menu. The thing that impresses me the most about the Wooden Nickel is their open kitchen door. You don't really notice it unless you sit at the bar, but I think it really takes balls to have your kitchen open for the public to see like that. You can look back there and see that the kitchen is every bit as clean and orderly as the front of the restaurant. The cooks are all wearing proper garb and look clean. I've been in restaurant kitchens and I know they often look quite dissimilar to the front of the house and can be simply nauseating. I'm very fond of the Wooden Nickel. It was the closest thing to civilization for me as I was doing time, er... living, in Upper Dauphin County. I think it's the only place with a liquor license north of Peter's Mountain that doesn't have a wormhole to Kentucky in the front door. They sling an excellent martini. If they would be a bit more imaginative in their menu, they'd easily earn a fourth star. read more

The wooden nickel defines mediocrity. There is nothing particularly exciting or offensive about it. Sort of the dining equivalent to watering plants. There are a couple of standout items. Anything I have had with a pita has been solid - the chicken one with salsa, ranch and bacon...the pork medallion pita with BBQ sauce...the gyros. Dinners have been Ok. The prime rib was pretty good, the sirloin tips with shrooms and onions decent. The Italian food kind of sucks. The meatball sub gave me serious ajita - meatloaf balls overloaded with onions. Pretty terrible. The pizza is passable for what it is - a personal pan pizza that keeps the grease quotient in check. Tastes decent. The service is pretty good and the atmosphere is comfortable. Not much to say here,there's not much around this little farm town so if your the only game in town you can serve just basic food that's mostly comfort food, but they would never make it if there was real restaurants around. It's clean and the staff is very friendly in a great location, has s full bar also, but the food is average at best, salads are nothing but iceberg lettuce with no greens in it, the vegetables are way over cooked , but this works for some people so who am I to judge, just a heads up for you yelpers when your in the area and hungry, if your a foodie just keep going until you get to Harrisburg where you can fine some real restaurants and in joy a good meal. read more

I've been here twice recently for lunch. The first time was with a group of 20. We called ahead and they had saved 6 tables close together in the same area for us. I prefer that to one long table. We had 3 waitresses for our group, a good ratio i think. I had a Ruben and it was delicious. I went back again yesterday (Labor Day) with my wife. She had broiled rainbow trout, which she said was yummy. I had a broiled crabcake which was also very good. It had big chunks of crab, little filler and was nicely spiced. The veggies were cooked "tender crisp", perfect in my opinion. With tax and tip the check was less than $40. The service was good on both occasions. I'll be back the next time i'm in town. read more

Well first off I grew up on this town and always like to give to local businesses but, I live in NYC now and have for the past 7 years. I always thought their pizza was pretty good but I was visiting this past week and thought let me grab a personal pan pizza from them. When I got my pizza it literally was the size of a saucer, I paid $8 for it and didn't even eat it my son did which is 3 years old and eats like a bird and he ate the whole thing. I was so disappointed in the price and the size, for a few more dollars I could have went to a real pizza place and had a whole pie. Very good! I had the jumbo shrimp stuffed with crabmeat and my husband had steak and a crabcake. Both entrees came with potato, salad, and a vegetable so it was a lot of food for the money. We have eaten here several times and it's always excellent. I'd give it 5 stars but it is a bit pricey. The portions are huge, the staff attentive but best of all, the food tastes great.
