Wanted to get out of Salem so a friend and I took a drive to Silverton. I was hoping to find a spot with a patio so we could enjoy the sunshine. We walked in and stood there for a while and after there was no acknowledgement, 'hello, welcome in' I asked if we could sit anywhere. The bartender was also the server, and I don't know if it was an off day, but warm and fuzzy she was not. It was dark inside, and seemed to be the spot for the locals, as there was a 'regular' talking loudly. Tipsy? Attention seeker? Who knows, but it was not the vibe we were looking for. We seated ourselves, placed our orders and ate while visiting before asking for 'to go' boxes. My friend wanted to play the slots, so I stood up and motioned to ask if we should just leave our things at the table (we hadn't been given the check). Afterwards, I went back and sat down and my friend cashed in her voucher. I joined her at the bar and asked for our check before we left. Will I return? Really good food! I came here last year and fell in love with their fried chicken. Haven't been back since then because I live quite a ways away. I came in specifically for the chicken today. It was super good, but not as good as my last visit. This visit it was seem to be a little overcooked and oily. The last time I came it was absolutely perfect. Best chicken I've ever had. The staff is still super kind super helpful. I would love to give it a five star just because they are who they are. But today I feel that the chicken was just not below what I had last time. Blue cheese dressing was great. I also ordered the "Chicken Tortilla Soup". With this, I just had a different expectation. Normally for CTS it's a broth based soup served with crunchy chips. While the soup they had was okay, it was more an Enchilada Verde soup... they put in soft corn tortillas and it was more green than tomato based. Again, it was fine, just not what I was expecting. I like the crunch of fresh chips and more tomato or broth based. This was thick and def flavorful. More a texture and expectation thing. We always enjoy coming in. Service was good and attentive. Never ill - I truly haven't had so much as a cold in decades - I'm retired - In my 70s - seldom go out to eat - but I was in the area, and was ready for a meal, and stopped at the Silverton Nickel - hadn't been there in a long time - they'd done some road work that blocked me from my home for a while... A resident of the 'Area' - I've been a customer of Mac's in Silverton and the Nickel in Sublimity too - for years! I had a 'Pulled Pork Poor Boy' sandwich. Seemed OK at the time... but the next morning... and all the next day I had the TROTS so bad, I couldn't stir farr from the toilet!!! I'm TOTALLY convinced that that food was bad... I NEVER have that kind of problem, EVER!! The only change in my diet was that sandwich at the Silverton Nickel!! I advise you to stay away from that place, and for SURE don't eat any 'Pulled Pork'!!!! read more

We had the absolutely worst fish and chips we have ever had--they were disgustingly coated in grease. I ordered the chopped brisket--which was also greasy. We have been customers of Wooden Nickel for decades. We visit 4 or 5 times a year. We won't be going back. First, the service was great, even exceptional. But the food is just not worth it. I ordered a Ribeye and was I was clear I wanted it medium. It came well done. They did get me another, this time it came medium rare, a little on the rare side. I'm Ok with that and I accepted that steak. i think the problem is that the cooks really don't know how to cook steak. Plus, these steaks are cut so thin that I'm sure it's difficult to nail the temp. My wife ordered ribs. They were horrible. Burnt, dry, she could not cut them, I had to do it for her. I could only guess maybe they'd been in smoker for a couple days. Since we already sent back my steak, she did not feel comfortable complaining again. I'm kicking myself for not sending them back anyway. Her jalapeno mac and cheese was great but the cole slaw was meh. She said her marion berry lemon drop was fantastic, she said it was the best one she ever had. Before we even finished we decided we'd get through this evening, make sure we take care of the waitstaff, and then not come back again. Our ticket with our two meals and drinks was $104 before tip and for that kind of money there are too many great options to waste it on bad food. Very sad, we loved this place. read more

Decided to try Wooden Nickel in Silverton for breakfast today after reading good reviews here. Unfortunately it's probably the worse breakfast we have ever had. The atmosphere was fun, country feel and nice people so we thought " ok this should be good". After waiting 10 minutes for a Bloody Mary and water the waitress disappeared. She was taking pictures of a large group and chatting it up... finally after another 15 minutes of waiting the bartender took our order. She was very nice and we appreciate her jumping in since the waitress was just gone. About 30 minutes later we got our food. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, potatoes O'Brien, Sourdough toast on the side for an additional $3.25 and an egg. Well.... The bacon was so overdone it crumbled if you broke it. The egg whites were running under the gravy, the gravy was ice cold like literally out of the fridge, biscuits were cold and flat, potatoes were so over fried in grease and had to be a few days old with not a bit of seasoning, and toast was like that cheap off brand thin sourdough not even toasted. Honestly - I am shocked it left the kitchen. The waitress never came back so the bartender noticed we didn't eat our food so she came over to ask what was wrong. I hated being that customer but I told her the truth. She was very apologetic and comped the meal and gave us a gift card. I appreciate her very much but unfortunately we have a bad taste in our mouth. Maybe it was an off day but for us, just simply not a good experience at all. read more

I ordered chicken fried steak for breakfast. Since I ordered my gravy on the side, I could see the chicken fried steak was some thing out of the freezer, but I don't think it was chicken or beef? Not sure, but it wasn't very tasty. The gravy tasted like white sauce. Hashbrowns were greasy, eggs and toast were OK. Service was slow and the waitress didn't seem like she could multitask very easily. I would not recommend having breakfast here. I have had dinner here in the past and it was good. The bar is nice and has a country vibe. Sport programs usually on the TVs. The Service seems better in the evening if you're ordering drinks. read more
