What really surprised me was how satisfying everything tasted without feeling heavy or overly sweetened--and even better, it didn't spike my blood sugar the way most desserts do. You can tell there's intention behind the ingredients and how everything is made. They also have plenty of other baked goods like cookies, brownies, and more, so there's definitely something for everyone. The staff are friendly, and the bakery itself is so cute--such a welcoming little spot that makes the experience even better. It looked like a fritter but it's topped with a dollop of cream cheese frosting so maybe it's some kind of cinnamon roll. It wasn't labeled so I'm not sure. My partner ate all of his pastries but didn't comment. I like that they raise funds for the community. It's not a bad shop, but I'm very big on customer service. It feels very open. They have a menu on the wall, and a chalkboard with the types of bread available that day. Husband orders cheesy broccoli soup, and she tells him "it's not really cheesy broccoli soup, it's got lots of veggies in it too" ok, he says, but still orders a bowl. I choose Tuna Salad, and I select 14 grain as my bread choice - "sorry, we're out of that", so I then choose 9 grain - "sorry, we're out of that", and so I ask for marbled rye - "sorry, we're out of that too" I'm really quite surprised, as it's 12.30 like prime lunch time, and they're out of 3 breads already? Maybe cross them off your chalkboard, so you don't have to keep disappointing people. So i choose focaccia with my fingers crossed, and all was well. The order was complete at 12.36. We sit. We wait. Twiddling our fingers. By 20 minutes I'm becoming impatient, because I'm hangry, and the dining room is not that full - maybe 5 tables. As there are 4 staff working behind the counter (could be more round the back in the bakery) I think service could be faster, to dish up a bowl of premade soup, and assemble a cold tuna salad sandwich. Anyway i get my eye on the young man making sandwiches. He's not wearing gloves, is running his fingers through his hair, and touching his face. I see a sandwich that was on the top of the shelf, and it either fell, or he threw it, onto presumably a bench below, and then reach up angrily for a new bag of bread, I don't know - maybe he made it wrong, and was starting over. By 1.02, (26 minutes later) husband could take it no more and went to get a refund. This is not the review I expected to be leaving today, as I've never had service like this here before. I've never gone here before and had to choose my bread 4 times, due to them running out. I've never had to wait so long for lunch using pre-made ingredients. I don't know what was going on, but it's nothing like all the other times we've been here, and I hope it's a one off. If I go back and see the same staff, I'll just walk straight out again and avoid another experience like this one.

Hello everyone,…read more I read these posts and could not stop laughing. Though I must agree with the first post and say that hands down this is the best bread I have had ever. I hail from Texas, and must say that compared to the average selections of things, Texas has a far larger variety than Alaska (a state I also love. for you Texas haters). Unfortunately, the FOB (French Oven Bakery), as my wife and I call it, has not made any pastries (like cakes for mom) since 2009-2010. So I find it hard to believe that the previous cake incident is accurate. I'm thinking they might be mistaken for another French bakery in town. Not mentioning any names, because the Paris Bakery might get mad. Just playing. They can be okay. So, unlike other people who claim to go there regularly, I actually see the down to earth people of the FOB (there's that acronym again) who package and bake their bread almost everyday. Also, their authenticity is beyond parallel in Alaska. One of the knowledgeable gentlemen who is regularly there when I go, is (get this) actually from France. Like born and raised, learned to cook from other Frenchmen, met his brother while he was visiting, surprisingly (yes, this is me being sarcastic, I couldn't help it) also French. And, other Frenchmen I've met in Alaska while at the FOB (who regularly go out of their way at earlier hours then I care to be awake at) go there regularly because (check this out) it's exactly like what they used to buy at their little local bakery when the were back at the motherland (just in case you weren't reading, that's France). I feel a little upset because this is actually a small mom and pop business who isn't open to sale to the public, and still does. Their service with me has been fantastic. I've been frequenting since 2004 (then they were located on Spenard where the Ammo Can currently is) and still have their amazing bread today at their newer location (where they moved to, somewhere between late 2005 and mid 2006) while I was stationed in GA. Like a true customer, my wife and I had them make our 32 center piece wedding cakes in 2007 as well as our six tear (because I'm crying it was so awesome) masterpiece. Thank you Celeste for all your hard work and beautiful art! She is the pasty chef who made that miracle happen. She no longer works there since they no longer make pastries. I know they have had some people occupy the front cafe area that sold pastries from there after they closed their cafe, but I know for sure they no longer sale to the public or pastries. If you show up early enough and ask nicely, I know they will be more than willing to sale you whatever isn't already spoken for (by any one of Alaska's finer restaurants). Just so you know, they also make delicious Mexican sweet bread and cookies. I like the palmsears (I think that's spelled right) and so does my son. He also likes the polvorones (may or may not be spelled right). But if you miss out on the unclaimed bread they might be willing to tell you who sells it. I'm not sure who did but last I checked they had a Facebook. I'll tell you one thing, this is one long term satisfied customer. I hope I was able to clarify some pessimistic misunderstandings for anyone reading. And if you don't believe me or any of the previous writers, check it out yourself. The worst that can happen is that you'll find the best and most authentic French bread in Alaska. I'll bet they'll even be willing to slice their loaves for you. I like mine thick by the way. I would've skipped it. I should've gotten it toasted too. I do wish the bacon were crispy and warm. It was soggy and cold. See photo. Overall pretty good. I'll come back and try a potato or a wrap.

I decided to get a waffle today since apparently this was the last day they would be open until…read morenext spring. Of course I knew there would be a wait, but I didn't know how bad it would be. Long story short, I ordered one banana bungalow waffle ($12, really?) for myself. The guy in front of me in line ordered a total of 5 waffles for himself and his family. The girl taking orders told him the wait would be about 35 minutes, so I figured mine would take about the same time. Spoiler: it did not. It took just over an hour. And to top it off, the waffle didn't live up to my expectations. The edges were burned and something about the cream tasted off, like it wasn't as fresh. Before they open again next spring, they really need to figure out a more efficient way to run their business. Hire more people, get more equipment, allow people to call/text in orders, something. Maybe even limit how many waffles one person can order because I would have had mine sooner if not for the people who ordered 10 waffles for their party. Because waiting over an hour for ONE waffle when that's all you make is ridiculous.

I could be wrong, but felt as if she was giving me an unwelcoming look. Right off the bat, they told me 'We're out of whipped cream!' And some other toppings... While I get that they were out of some stuff, they didn't have to blurt that out first thing. I almost didn't end up ordering anything because of that. That really soured my experience. I ended up getting a plain waffle for $6 with nothing on it. With toppings it would've been either $11 to $13. Where do they get off charging that amount of money for a waffle with a few toppings??? You could get all of those ingredients for under $10 at the grocery store and make a good 20 plus waffles for that price. I suggest lowering your prices. Your waffles are good...but why charge so much for them?
