I cruised by heading for a meeting at around 1:15 and there was a line outside. I figured that I would head back and try to catch it if it was still open. Around 230 I came back by and they were still open so I pulled over to see what the big deal was. It was great. I ordered a sausage sandwich Which I put a little bit of mild sauce on and it was delicious. I also ordered a pound of pulled barbecue and some sliced turkey. Along with their cornbread it made a great meal for the rest of the family when I got home that afternoon. I love places like this. First time visiting Woodpeckers and I am obsessed! It is a hike for me to go here but I do not mind driving here, it is so worth it! Went here before they open (they open at 11am) people were already waiting and the hostess was super friendly!! she took my name so that when they open I will have a spot. while waiting there are some chickens/rooster walking and they are so cute! sadly the other rooster named tiptoe was nowhere to be found :( we sat at the bar. service was phenomenal! we got our drinks. My office often does carryout and we go there often with my MIL. Great BBQ with friendly service and assortment of Datil sausage, beef brisket, ribs and sides. Even the cornbread is incredible. Very rustic with seating inside and out. Parking is on a gravel lot with ancient live oaks. Mercedes to motorcycles. People line up outside for carryout before going to the nearby St Johns river. Looks like your typical "hole in the wall" barbecue place, but the food and service are anything but! Greeted at the door by our awesome server (I'm so sorry I forgot your name) who was absolutely bursting with menu knowledge and information of the surrounding area. Ordered the lean brisket (they were out of the fatty brisket) and it was delicious! The baked beans tasted like my childhood in a cup, and the Mac n cheese was super creamy and delicious. The corn bread was so good, it'll have you yelling "I just want me sum corn bread...!" like 'Wild Bill' in the movie The Green Mile. Not pictured was the tapioca pudding, which was rich, thick, and full of flavor. The portion size was enough to share between 3 people! This BBQ is fantastic! I've had my fair share of great BBQ as I live in Fort Worth, TX and there is no shortage of it there, but Woodpeckers is easily one of the best in the nation! Get there early as certain items sell out quicker than others (moist brisket, ribs, cornbread, datil sausage). Our waitress was very nice, and she kept our drinks full. In town visiting my sister and her family, BIL recommended so I picked up some food and brought it over to eat with the nephews. We had way too much food. I enjoyed my meal, fatty brisket and ribs, with datil beans and corn. I sat at the bar as I was alone and was the first guest to enter as I had gotten there at 10:00. With a soda and tip it was $35. When I first received my meal I tried to eat the brisket but it was dry and almost crunchy, and not just the bark. When I told my server that I thought the kitchen had made a mistake and given lean, she scooped up my plate and took it to kitchen. She returned saying it was fatty, the trimming had just removed the fat. I don't know how they did this as there was bark on the entire perimeter. While certainly no expert, I have been to Texas Foodway's Brisket Camp (look it up) and I know the number 1 factor between ok and great brisket is that it come from the point end (preferably with point and flat). No other factor makes much difference. I was disappointed but just chalked it up to a pit master's hubris. I was then pleasantly surprised when my server brought me some partial slices (they were 1" tall with 1/2" of fat). These slices were what I expected, juicy and tasty. I scooped the meat from the fat and left the first batch. So if this happens to you complain. The ribs were fall off the bone with no tug and a unique flavor, like a blend of rosemary and ginger, although when asked they said none of the above. I tried their in-house sauces, but only at the end, as good bbq needs no sauce and this was good, ignoring the first brisket. I thought all three sauces were too sweet, especially for brisket. I loved the datil beans, the corn was ok but not a stand-out like the beans. When I left at just before noon there was no line and plenty of seats. read more

I've had great brisket in both Texas and Kansas City. Woodpecker's takes the cake! My brother in law who lives in the area insisted we go here. We were not disappointed. I was craving BBQ and decided to try this spot that had been on my list for some time now. A little bit of a drive, but it was a beautiful day, so why not!? Place was busy, lots of bikers (maybe due to Bike week?), but able to find a spot to park, and got in the line. They have three lines which helps traffic, one for inside dining, one for call ahead orders, and one for to-go/sit outside orders. We opted to sit outside. They have a sign that says 25 minutes for your food, so there are no questions you're going to have a bit of a wait. No worries, and I appreciate knowing up front. I opted for brisket and ribs with mac & cheese and corn on the cob. They also had cobblers, so I ordered the blackberry cobbler with ice cream. Much to my sister's frustration I had ordered the last blackberry cobbler, so she opted for apple cobbler. She ordered pulled pork and the datil sausage as her meats, with mac and cheese and datil cornbread. All meals come with Texas Toast too. About 20 minutes later they called my sister's name and she went to get our food. Since I had ordered ahead of her she asked about mine, and was told it was picked up a few minutes earlier. As I had not left the table, she let them know I had not picked up my food. They immediately put together my meal and sent it out with her. Unfortunately I had ordered the last of the blackberry cobbler, so they subbed apple. Not their fault in any way, but disappointing nonetheless. Hope whoever took my food enjoyed it! Ribs were fall off the bone. I should have asked if they were beef or pork, my bad. I prefer pork, but I will say these were some great tasting beef ribs. The brisket - oh my - what is there to say? Beautiful smoke ring, tender, juicy, so flavorful I think I moaned on my first bite! They were out of the Datil BBQ sauce, which I would have chosen, but their sweet sauce was very rich and added a hint of sweetness to the meat. Mac and cheese was good. Noodles a little bit al dente for my taste, but still good. Lots of black pepper, which I always put tons on my mac & cheese, so I loved it. Some may prefer a little less pepper, so if you do, you might want a different side. Corn was cooked perfectly. I got a bit of the datil cornbread and it was oh so delicious. Nice hint of heat, very moist, and yummy. Meal is a bit expensive for lunch ($30+), but we had opted for the 2-meat plate so we could try more than one thing, and we definitely came home with enough food for at least another meal. Staff was very pleasant and helpful. They aren't wearing masks for the most part, so heads up on that. For the most part, most of the patrons were not wearing masks in the line either, in fact my sister and I were the only two for quite some time that I saw that had on masks. read more
