This is my all time favorite. I come there regularly for a latte and something on the side. On days when both breakfast and lunch slip by me, I have one of their single serving focaccia, topped with tomato, olives and grated cheese, making it much more than a slice of bread. Their sandwiches are great, but, as I do not have a large appetite, I order a half sandwich. More restaurants should offer half sandwiches. Their pastries are all wonderful. The problem is deciding which one to enjoy. I bring my granddaughters their muffins and often take a loaf of challah to my daughter's house on a Friday. The always present apricot and raspberry bars are not to be missed. Lately, Woodstar has expanded its offerings. The Bakewell pastries are a treat. read more

Excellent pastry, and I often bump into folks I know here, so I do keep coming back despite the less-than-ideal ratio of portion to price on the sandwiches. The service is what gets me. Most recently, it was a young fellow at the cashier deciding it was more important to have an extended conversation with a young lady about her upcoming trip to Greece than moving the line. Of course, people claiming tables with coats before getting into line themselves the whole time, so I decided to get a cheaper and heartier lunch somewhere where I knew I'd have a place to sit. I go to the Woodstar Café on occasions where I am in this area looking for a coffee and snack. They have one of the most extensive gluten-free menus in Northampton. They have great desserts and sandwiches, including egg sandwiches, that can be made on gluten-free bread. Although I think paying over four dollars for an average-sized non-GF eclair is a bit much, it is a tasty snack. (No, not as good as Mrs. Murphys or the Big E!) They also offer some unique salads that are filling as well. So, besides my love of gluten-free treats, I enjoy coming here because there's always an eclectic group of people who are mingling around. There is usually parking within a block or so of the restaurant, so don't be discouraged if the main public parking lot across the street is full. Speaking of full, It is always crowded in here, so if you are coming in with more than two people, it is difficult to find space to sit. Small complaint forthcoming... I would give it five stars, but every time I come in here, there is no joy in any of the people serving my food. If there is one thing I dislike, it's coming in and finding that people are too preoccupied in their own whatever business to at least give a smile when handing over my coffee at the counter, or maybe even just a tiny bit of small talk to anyone, just to show that they're interested in something besides themselves. I am not talking about being narcissistic here, just the annoying/ignoring "Northampton attitude". This is the feeling I get every time I come in there, so maybe it's just me and my non-Northamptony understanding. read more

Yes, I love Woodstar despite how often their internet fails and how crowded it can get. I love the way the sunlight streams through the huge windows and the pretty blue tables. I love the changing artwork that adorns the walls and their delicious cookies. No, they don't have nearly enough plugs but the most fascinating conversations happen here. The sandwiches are alright but their bagel sandwiches with lox and cream cheese are better. Peanut butter chocolate chip cookie? YES. Way better than any other cafe in the area. Awesome atmosphere. Woodstar is confusing for me but a lot of people love it. It feels like a film set for a sitcom about a coffee shop but it's real life. Indoor seating feels a bit awkward as it's quite tight (imagine NYC) and the sandwiches I've had were served on bread that was so tough (yet fresh) the filling wouldn't stay in the sandwich. read more

Thanks to Clare, our Smith College tour guide, for suggesting her favorite coffee place to us. We ran over after the tour and got iced coffees and grilled cheese. My vanilla iced coffee was delicious and so was the honey lemon ginger. We both got grilled cheese - cheddar, swiss and mozzarella, I believe. It was simple, yet pleasantly filling. Service was super friendly. The place was packed on a Thursday at lunchtime, so expect to a) have trouble finding parking; and b) wait in line for a couple of minutes. Here are my girlfriend and I's favorite things: Food -Ham, egg, and cheese bagel sandwich (get the everything bagel!) -Bagel Margherita -Poppyseed muffin -Chocolate croissant (can't get it warmed up, but its perfect and flaky!) Drinks -Hot chocolate -Iced Chai (try it with the oat milk!) -Green smoothie (great for when you need something fresh, can be a little grainy but still good) It is a nice short walk from Smith College, and has a very warm and comfortable atmosphere. The baristas and servers are very friendly, and the customer service is all around great. We can't wait to get back to Northampton and visit Woodstar again and again! read more

As classes have been coming to an end, I've been doing my daily studying at Woodstar, often spending a few hours in the cafe. There are pros and cons. In short, the food and coffee are both very good, with the environment of the cafe not being up to par with just about any other in Northampton. To go into specifics: It is the cafe located closest to Smith College. However, it is a horrific place for long studying sessions. There is one wall outlet in the entire cafe, located in a corner with hectic seating around it (often the person using the outlet can get trapped by a nearby table being occupied). It is also right by the door, meaning that if it's cold out, you're getting a blast of that cold air every time the door is opened. When it's warmer out it's fine, but it's unpleasant in the winter. Adding onto this, while the WiFi is of good speed and bandwidth, the connection is poor. There are corners of the cafe the WiFi won't reach, and it goes down fairly frequently (2-3 times per week). I would not trust their internet if you're doing something that is dependent on you having internet, but if you have a wireless hotspot you can connect to as a backup, it's good enough. They prefer that you use cards on purchases under $10, such that they can get a lower card transaction rate from Square (for reaching an average card transaction of $15), but not so much that they change to a cash-only business model. I've been accosted once by one of the owners for using my card on transactions under $10, but they do still accept cards on such smaller purchases. There are other small things, such as their curtain blocking the door (I assume to attempt stopping outside air from coming in) causing people to bump into each other (as it blocks visibility from people entering/exiting completely), sometimes dropping their phone/purchase. This would be solved by the installation of an air door, so I'm unsure of the reasoning for the curtain. They recently put a code on the bathroom, but the code is taped to the counter, which is a very difficult place to read it after you've completed your transaction (if you've been sitting for a while). The food and beverages here are fantastic, but I'd imagine they're best enjoyed when taken out of the cafe. If WiFi and charging isn't a big deal to you, and you're able to regularly get cash to use as payment, it's a great place to patronize. For a student who generally has two devices to charge, and who often can't get cash on campus, you might want to look elsewhere. The Haymarket and Starbucks are both cafes in town that have an abundance of outlets, no issue with you using your card, and WiFi capable of satisfying your studying needs. The prices at Woodstar are fantastic, but at a certain cost. read more

The woodstar cafe is unfortunately resting a bit on its laurels from years ago. The food and coffee are comprable with other cafes but the service has been lacking during the pandemic. More than once I was sold food and coffee right at closing and was not advised. They cleared out and locked up their outdoor tables and sent me on my way promptly after I got my food and drink. Comprable bread can be found across the street for a lesser price. Iconica Social Club now offers competition also across the street. Hipster heaven is a good way to describe this place. I really like Woodstar. Not sure what would make it a 5. I have only gone in for baked goods and coffee. I really need to go there more often for lunch. There is a wide variety items to chose from on their menu boards. They have great baked goods and coffee and teas. Woodstar and Sip are probably my two favorite coffee places in Northampton. Woodstar is bigger and has a wider variety of offerings though. I have always found the service to be very good ...and they do get busy. There are plenty of tables inside and out. They do tend to attract the hang out and work in the cafe types though (isn't that what the library is for). Anyway, vibe is cool, prices are good and you really can't go wrong. This is a great local business, it deserves support and patronage. Starbucks can only aspire to be this cool. read more

Meh-this place is average in most respects although I haven't tried their sandwiches. The baked goods are mediocre at best, nothing memorable with the exception of the slightly above average chocolate croissant. The pear tart has hints of nutmeg and cinnamon that I liked but the cowgirl cookie, chocolate eclair and chocolate decadence cake are just average. The coffee is a bit watery for my taste. I prefer strong coffee so if you like a weaker brew, this place might be for you. Lastly, the free wifi is awesome but there are too few outlets to accommodate the number of laptops requiring power. So for me it isn't an ideal study spot. The back room would be FANTASTIC for studying if only it were air conditioned. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect coffee shop in Noho. read more

This is a really nice cafe off the main streets of Northampton. I appreciated having a bagel sandwich (the Vermonter) with ham, cheddar, and apple, with a price point that was just over $5 with tax. The interior, like the staff, seemed cheery and welcoming. My sandwich was a bit dry, though. Maybe heating it or adding a bit of a condiment would have helped. Still, it's a good bakery/coffee/luncheon spot with a nice selection of things to eat. Service was quick enough, too, to warrant a working lunch or take-out. I love the food at the Woodstar. Their baked goods are five star. Their grilled cheese sandwich is world class. Here's the problem with this place--the staff has consistently demonstrated horrible customer service and attitude. I don't know how the staff culture developed into such a hot mess but I'm always made to feel like they are doing me a huge favor. They often act Iike the customer is an imposition. If you want to just grab a drink or a cookie you better have cash--they accept credit cards only on a $5 minimum purchase. They only can make pressed sandwiches until 2 pm. Not sure why, just don't try to order one after 2 pm. Don't ask for a refill on a beverage. They don't do that and they will make you like a loser for asking. When they take your order there is a more than fair chance it will be screwed up. If you asked for no mayo--be prepared to get mayo. For what they are preparing, expect your order to take a while to prepare. No get in, get out quick if the kitchen is involved. I want to love this place. Truly. I have recommended it to others traveling to NoHo and I visit here whenever I am in town. But the Woodstar is not an easy place to love. Her staff is weirdly disinterested or distracted or just plain rude. If I were the owner, I would do a total training reboot. Just once, I would like to hear a staff member say, "Good morning, what can I get started for you" or "I'm sorry we didn't get your order right, let me give you a free sandwich on your next visit" or maybe even a "thank you." "Come for the food. Stay for the rude!" That's apparently the Woodstar slogan. read more

Woodstar has got good feng shui ^_^ Something about sitting at one of its cute tables, gazing out their lovely wall of windows upon the New England college town scene outside, while enjoying a good cup makes me feel all warm inside and recharges me. The staff is super friendly, local art graces the walls, while an eclectic mix spins overhead and free wifi gets you tapped in. Granted, it can get pretty well-packed particularly on the weekends..but during off-peak times, it's an oasis of nourishing calm. Sandwiches and baked goods are made in-house and probably the best in town (of course, tastebuds vary so for me at least). My favorites: their awesome eclairs, pear-pie-tart-thing (?) that's what I call it, and curiously a ciabatta roll that's still like 70cents, soft, crusty, and perfect with butter when you come across a warm batch in the morning~ read more

I ate the best chocolate cookie of my life here. (I've been eating cookies for 40 years.) But I left because there wasn't any seating. I agree with a commenter below that it's primarily privileged students who are hogging the tables with their expensive laptops for hours on ends without thinking of the needs of the owners or the other customers. You and I know they have internet wherever they go. (If they're from Smith C, the entire campus, even the sidewalks, has internet coverage. There are plenty of places marked out especially for them where they can work on the internet with a caffeinated drink.) Hence, I second the solution of the commenter below: Woodstar Cafe, turn off the internet. It will create a happier and more inclusive place. read more

Second favorite cafe in Noho. First being Sip. An upside to Woodstar is that it has more eating inside, and, in warmer weather, it feels great to sit outside. The drinks I would get there: their vanilla latte and teas. It sucks that they close so early, but I loved studying there during the weekends with a pen/highlighter in one hand, and sippin' some tea in another. Only in noho can you find a cafe where they'll serve you your tea in a teapot and tea kettle. Also, they're not getting a five because one time I got a vanilla frosted chocolate cake from them, and it tasted stale. It seemed like it had been sitting there for a week--looking delicious but really being a waste of money. read more

I found this place after a long hot night at UMass and it's great. With the AAA towing guy camped across the street, parking is yucky, bring change for the meter. Other than that I ordered a large ginger chai (with xtra ginger! ) and woo boy I love that big fat mug and creamy taste. The bakery makes me wish I was a fat rich kid cuz I just wanted to try everything. Fitness muffins with OJ and apples, blueberry bread pudding, giant cookies, i got the pear-sunflower muffin from another reviewer. I think I would've liked something less dry tho. The atmosphere is nice, the girls are hot, and it's on a wicked cool street for shopping and exploring. Win! read more

Woodstar is a really cute cafe with great treats, my favorite in Northampton. The workers are friendly, the atmosphere is really nice both inside and out (though some days it gets a little loud inside). I get the chai a little less sweet, which they were happy to do, and I've tried both the fruit tart and the lemon bar. The lemon bar ($2.85) was good, but not that much different from your average lemon bar. The fruit tart, however, was fantastic! Lots of fresh fruit, good crust, and there was a thin layer of chocolate on the inside that really took it to the next level. It was a bit pricey ($5.65), but you get what you pay for. Overall a great cafe, only reason they aren't 5 stars are the prices (or lack of them sometimes). Drink prices are typical. Pastries are a little more expensive, but some could be shared by two prudent people. The bigger thing is that the prices of the pastries aren't visible anywhere. You have to ask at the counter, at which point you've already waited in line, and if you weren't planning on ordering anything else you feel compelled to buy something. Probably a great pressure tactic, but it makes me a little sad. So -1 star for that, but otherwise, I love this place! read more

I have been a patron of this Cafe for over 5 years. Increasingly, I have noticed that people ( usually students ) are taking up tables without buying a single thing from the cafe. I visited twice this weekend, and saw the same person taking up a high top table for four without having a single item from Woodstar. As the weather becomes nicer this problem will only get worse. I feel that management should enforce a policy in which only patrons are allowed to 'squat' at the tables. I love to visit this Cafe, but had to choose another local cafe yesterday when I could not find a place to sit. The students seem to be using it as a library / study place and do not recognize that this is a business establishment that ultimately needs to make a profit. read more

I spent a fair share of time studying at Woodstar or the Roost during my undergraduate years. For a college student, both places are slightly on the pricier side for what they offered. I remember getting a bagel once, which was around $3 for a plain bagel, but with additional toppings it quickly added-up to an $8 bagel. Lovely interior, pretty good espresso drinks and excellent sandwiches and food. I've had great service and I've had curt service. Lines can be long and food can take a while to come out so it might not be the best place if you're in a rush. I highly recommend them for sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, soups and salads. I'd recommend espresso drinks over drip coffee. My favorite sandwich is the Thunderbolt. I've searched all over Rhode Island to find a sandwich of this quality and haven't yet. read more

Living literally two doors down from Woodstar, I'd love it if I felt I were able to go there everyday. Really, I would if not for the downright AWFUL service. Let me explain... If you try to go to Woodstar at any time in the morning/early afternoon on the weekend, prepare to wait in line for 10-15 minutes, and another 10-15 for your coffee/food, all while being clawed at by free-roaming toddlers, given the death stare by judgemental hipsters (including both baristas and patrons), and being skipped in line at least twice by self-righteous Northamptoners who really just need to get there organic, fair-trade soy lattes before you. This goes for most weekdays too. I've had my order forgotten at LEAST 4 times. No joke. As in, waiting the obligatory 15 minutes for your coffee to come, seeing that all of the people who ordered after you have already gotten theirs, and that they're just moving down the line. And then when I politely try to remind the girls behind the counter, they do not even have the basic courtesy to apologize. UNacceptable. As I said, I want to go there, I really do. Their Cafe Vanilla is outstanding (although the quality of your coffee DOES depend on who's making it- not all of Woodstar's baristas are created equal) and their bread and Super Foccacia is amazing (although again, portion size does vary depending on who's behind the counter), but the service is SO bad that returning to Woodstar for more would only make me a masochist. As another reviewer wrote, the vibe here is just bad. There are pseudo-intellectuals who come with their Macbooks and Marxist theory and stay for literally hours on end (I love Marxism but really, you're not fooling anyone with those black framed glasses) and sit alone while taking up a 2-4 person table with piles of their crap. If you really want a good sandwich (although the coffee doesn't compare) walk down a couple blocks to Haymarket. Although the same crowd frequents this cafe as well, it is much more spacious (and the vintage decor is super hip) so you don't have to sit nose-to-nose with them. And the smoothies rule. In summation, if you're willing to get s*** on in exchange for some great coffee, head down to Woodstar. Just don't expect to find a seat, or any respect. read more
