BUYER BEWARE!!!!! I purchased a mandolin from this company, Woodsy's Music Audio Video, October 16th informing me that it was the last one in stock. The price was great, but they do not accept credit cards so instead of outright purchasing the instrument in full, I financed it through a financing company they obviously promote at a high interest rate for I was going to pay it off next month or two anyway. With that said, I just received a notice, October 18th via email that my order has been cancelled due to no inventory. So now I probably have to deal with this Financing company while my order has been cancelled. Very frustrating for I was really looking forward to this instrument. they were very friendly until I decided to return a sax mouthpiece, at which time they hit me with a 60 DOLLAR re-stocking fee. They also told me the return was "late," after telling me over the phone that it was fine to return the mouthpiece. I think that kind of fee is OVER THE TOP. Maybe 15-20 dollars for their trouble; also note: they said they would charge me 15% as a restocking fee, which was about $10 less than they charged me. Went to this location as a friend informed me that it was one of the best in the area. I found the store to be well stocked with tons of quality gear for, just about, every genre of music. However, the reason for the two star rating was their customer service. The individual I had to help me out with the list of items I wanted to purchase was rude, unfriendly and acted as if helping me out with my purchases was a bother. Thought I might be in for an expensive repair when my old Korg SP-100 died. Tom and Joe brought it back to life in minutes and didn't charge me a dime. My AC adapter had a reversible tip--I had it in the wrong position! These two could have told me I needed a new Flux Capacitor and charged me accordingly--but because they're honest guys they didn't. read more

Very poor customer services! I took my sons trumpet in for repairs a few weeks before his concert, no one called me regarding the repairs and when I called they listed all the concerns and gave a very high price! I asked about renting an instrument to get him through his concert and they said they only do 3 month rentals (which I didn't need). Then reported they would talk to someone about a replacement during the repair and call me the following business day, no call was ever made. I left the instrument there for about two weeks (we borrowed another trumpet from elsewhere) and never recieved a call to see if they should go ahead with the repair or if we found a trumpet. I picked it up today the gentleman handed me the trumpet not repaired and never inquired into why it was never fixed or what we did for a replacement. Very poor customer services, we will be going elsewhere in the future! read more

Took a Bugle in for repair, they kept it for 8 months and every time I called on it they told me "a little longer". When I finally did get it back, unrepaired, they didn't have the mouthpiece or the case. They had to mail me a mouthpiece and I still have never seen the case. Guess they sold it. read more

They do not communicate with you about how long a repair will take. I dropped off an instrument mid-July and asked for it by mid August band camp. When I called to pick it up they said it wasn't ready and gave me a rental. I've called 3 additional times and they keep telling me it's not done and they don't know when it will be for sure. I finally forced them to give me a date and they said at least another month (end of September.) This all should have been communicated with the customer from the first time they walked through their door. Marching band season will be about over by the time I finally receive the instrument back. Frustrated. read more

Located just "off-square," behind Whitey's Army/Navy, in a nice old brick storefront. Very appealing front window, nice display inside, guitars all along the west wall, brass and strings along the east, and a repair shop in the south-west corner. I've taken two of my guitars there for set-ups. Both were done to my spec and satisfaction, and the price seemed in line with big-city rates. (In my dozen-odd visits, I've never been anything less than satisfied with the employees, which I really can't say for my few visits to their "flagship" shop in Kent.) Where they fall down, I think, is the pricing of nearly everything else in the store. I'd love to be able to say, "Hey, weren't you looking for a Tele? Here, call this guy over in Medina. He's got a few new ones, and he HAD a used one, a while back..." But I can't recommend Woodsy's for anything other than repair and "consumables" (strings, reeds, etc.). I can appreciate how tough it must be to run a brick-and-mortar in the era of click-and-order, especially when guitars and other instruments are up for grabs. You go to a store, try a few out, then walk right out and order one from a website in Guam. Boom. Saved forty percent. Whether you get the same instrument is a separate issue; you can pretty much set up any instrument made and still come out WAY ahead. That's the quandary. I'd love to support them and am glad they're sticking around. But here's my suggestion: Have a couple barely-making-any-money instruments on sale. Keep people coming in. Don't, as I experienced, send them fleeing back to the internet with sticker shock. read more

Imagine the quintessential local guitar shop stepped up a notch. Woodsy's is quite literally a catchall of musical instruments. It IS primarily a guitar shop, but don't just expect old gibsons and beat up pawn shop queens. They have those, as well as a plethora of boutique instruments, and odd percussion things, and effect pedals. The staff is friendly and VERY knowledgeable. Spent about 2 hours today in Woodsys,and really enjoyed myself! The staff was very knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating! Also, I did not go into sticker shock as someone suggested: I felt that the price I paid for my instruments was very fair, and the repair shop is second to none! I love the fact its not a chain, yet still very competitive and reasonable! And personally, I LOVE the fact I was allowed to browse without someone following me throughout the store asking every 2 minutes if I needed help. Great place, full of eye-candy and other goodies. They offer lessons for many traditional instruments and more. Woodsy's will also service your instruments, and the knowledgable staff can provide a detailed opinion of an instrument or decision. My only problem is with the customer service. I rarely feel welcome here, and I don't know who's who when it comes to staff. I mean, an employee could be right under your nose and you wouldn't realize that he worked there! The instruments are expensive, but that's to be expected. There's a great selection of music books upstairs, and a wide variety of other music paraphernalia throughout. Protip: If you need help in this Woodsy's, look for the closest college kid wearing a band t-shirt. It might not be an employee, but chances are it probably is. A little better than your standard indie music store. Good selection of guitar amps, only a few bass amps, and need-to-have brands like Gibson are conspicuously missing from the store. They have a decent selection of cables, and their big focus seems to be acoustic instruments. Everything from cheap to very high-end acoustic guitars, banjos, ukuleles, resonators, and even some oddballs like autoharps, dulcimers and banjoleles. The employees are your standard old hippies like every music store that isn't Guitar Center. Generally pretty friendly, and will let you try out anything if you ask. They had no problem letting my guitarist demo a $2,000 Orange amp, and didn't hawkeye us the whole time like you get at some places, which can be a huge turnoff. Their selection of drum gear is a standout. Plenty of parts, and lots of more obscure brands like Attack, Silverfox and Cannon that make some good accessories. Their array of drumheads is equally good, they carry the more obscure lines from Aquarian, especially, including every size and type of marching/symphonic heads they make. Overall, great store, it's homey in a small-town way that makes me feel like i'm back in rural southern Ohio, which is about the only thing I miss from there. read more

Amazing acoustic shop -- someone else mentioned the huge variety of uke's, mandolins, banjos, and, of course, guitars. In the age where most music stores can't compete on inventory vs. the "big chains", Woodsy's beats the snot out of the chains when it comes to acoustical strumming and picking. You can try out what you see... it's not just like you'll find one thing based on your price range... on my visit they had a few choices in every price range except maybe the very bottom. The prices were competitive with what you can expect online. Someone said the older the employee, the friendlier... I tend to agree although the younger staff isn't unfriendly, they just reflect the current generation sentiments that they deserve the sale and don't particularly work to build up goodwill. That means you won't be pressured or fast talked, but it also means if you have a sticking point about something on an instrument... maybe you'd like the strings changed or something like that, you'll have better luck if your talking to someone more grey in the tooth who appreciates how much it means not just to have a customer, but to have a happy customer. In my case, I found and instrument I in a higher price range that I like but the set up just didn't feel right under my fingers. There was also an instrument around half the price that felt more playable to me, but the sound wasn't quite as complex. If they had offered to adjust the set up I would have bought it, but as it came time to check out, I got a younger guy who wasn't enthusiastic about that. I know time = money, but if the tech is around anyway, and he or she is willing to support a sale, then why not see what's involved? Anyway, I bought the cheaper instrument and I'm very happy with it. Someone else will come along who is going to be just as happy with the more expensive instrument the way it's already adjusted I guess. Or I'll go back in a few years when I am more advanced and maybe then it will feel easy to play for me as well. I have no idea how fast their inventory turns over. I went on a weekday and it was pretty slow. I think they probably get a big boost from the Kent Folk Festival, and they also have an online operation that could be moving a lot of their merchandise... I just don't know. There is free parking for customers in the back, so that's another plus for going in person. read more

The luthier damaged my guitar while setting it up and replacing the nut. He then lied to me saying that after I played it for a while the problem would go away. DON'T trust the repair staff with your instruments. The staff as a whole had a bad attitude. Just search for any other music shop. read more

I'm a long time Woodsy's customer. As music stores go, it's as good as any. I want to comment here specifically about the guitar tech, Don. He's worked on several guitars of mine; acoustic, electric solid as well as hollow body. He's knowledgeable about all of them, always helpful and I always learn something. And the turn-around time has always been surprisingly quick. I recently dropped off a 70's hollow-body I picked up, on a Monday. Complete set up including work on the nut, shimming the neck, set up the bridge, then it needed additional work on the wiring. He fished it all out, cleaned and re-soldered, reassembled, and polished the finish. I checked in after work on Wednesday and it was done. So, a big recommendation for Don. (I just hope he doesn't get so busy it starts taking him longer.) read more

For many years I have been a loyal customer of Woodsy's. It is a welcome surprise to find such a complete store, offering internet competitive prices (if not often being lower), with such a friendly, knowledgeable and skilled staff in the quaint college town of Kent. I used to drive an hour to patron Woodsy's because quite simply, it was worth the drive. Now I live only minutes away and am thrilled about this. I have purchased everything from saxophones, mouthpieces, sheet music to drum heads and cymbals. Woodsy's has such a complete selection of instruments (guitars, percussion, woodwind and brass), accessories, recording and live sound, etc... I still am amazed when I enter this store at the sheer volume of merchandise offered here. They truly compete with the selections offered at internet big box stores and as I said, at the same or lower prices. And for the woodwind player, their selection is so extensive offering great deals on the best pro horns available on the market. With regard to mouthpieces, simply second to none. Again, HUGE selection at the lowest prices. They offer mouthpieces that you typically will not and can not find in most local stores and therefore would have to buy on line not knowing how they play. So, it goes without saying what a great opportunity it is to be able to try the best mouthpieces like Theo Wanne, JodyJazz, Drake, etc....and find what works for you and then be able to buy at the most competitive price! I can not stress how thankful I am for this as I have purchased more than one mouthpiece on line only to discover that it wasn't the right one for me. I have even sold instruments and equipment that I no longer used to Woodsy's. Not only was I treated fairly, but they offered more than any other local musical instrument dealer! Having said this, I must offer the main reason I continue to return to this store, the staff, specifically the woodwind specialists. Although everyone that I have dealt with has been truly friendly and professional, I do most of my business with the guys upstairs (Tony, Anthony, Jason and Armound), the woodwind and brass staff. Over the years I have had the privilege of having many dealings with Tony Spicer who primarily does instrument repair and set up .....and is thought of by many of his peers as being one of the best in this capacity. Tony has done a fantastic job setting up, adjusting and repairing many of my horns. But in addition to this, he is a world class saxophonist and is exceptionally knowledgeable and I often consult him on many of my purchases (to date he is batting 1000 having not once steered me wrong). Along with him are many others that are very helpful and friendly but I must specifically mention Anthony as well. Although being fairly new to Woodsy's and young enough to be my son, he really impresses me with his knowledge and recommendations. He too is a fine musician with an extensive and diverse background that although defies his age, truly benefits and compliments the Woodsy's experience. Anthony has gone above and beyond helping me out on numerous occasions and it is greatly appreciated. I truly enjoy my experiences at Woodsy's. Not only the fine deals I've been the beneficiary of but the friendly and helpful interaction with the staff and in particular, Tony and Anthony. read more

One of the best music stores! Woodsy's has a great guitar selection, along with a decent selection of pedals and amps, that would normally not be found at typical "big box" music stores. This store also takes very good care of their stock and is very willing to work with their customers. Woodsy's carries earthquaker devices, and is the only Jhs dealer that I know of! Customer service is horrible. The techs have attitude problems and do not listen to the customers. If you contact them about the failure of their customer service they ignore you. I base my judgement on personal experiences. Which in the past I have been told to avoid them due to attitudes. I decided to give them a chance anyway. It's hard to find a quality music store where they listen to their customers. Expect to be treated the same way you would if you walked into a guitar center. Unfortunately, customer service is not a top priority on their list. read more
