Love this place! The hot hot one tender challenge is extremely hot that I have to drink two glasses of iced milk after just one bite. I grew up in Asia and used to eat really spicy food but this is on another level! That being said, I am totally satisfied with the experience. Finishing the whole wing in one go is not possible so I plan to consume it slowly day by day mixing with other food. Their Sando meal with fries is my day to day favorite. I normally order the medium(very spicy) level, it's in my comfort zone. But if you just like a hint of spicy, just order mild or mild+(spicy) level should be good. A graffiti covered food truck and covered tables and benches with mood lights around the perimeter. Lots of effort was put toward the environment but it still isn't what Oakland location is. Shared parking lot with liquor store can be convenient -- maybe people deep in car culture would especially like this - you can eat with your car within view. Fries were abundant - probably too many. Burger was large enough I didnt need them at all. I think for me that is the whole problem with this place - its all too much. Its like why I don't like Black Bear diner. Finally got around to trying Hotboys and came away impressed. We ordered the sando and the loaded fries, and the chicken was exactly what you'd want from a hot chicken spot: crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and well balanced by the slaw and sauce. As someone who's had a lot of hot chicken, I'd say it's definitely comparable to Howlin' Ray's, though Howlin' Ray's still holds the top spot for me. The loaded fries were a solid choice too and made for a satisfying side. My only disappointment? I didn't actually see any hot boys on the menu. Ordered online and the order was ready for pick up within 20-25 minutes (which is a lot faster than I thought - because the Oakland location can take a while for lunch). When we got there, we saw our ToGo bag order, but no one was in the truck to give us the food, so we had to go into the store nearby and that cashier came out, went into the world Famous Hotboys truck and gave us the food. Finally got to try WFH and it did not disappoint! I ordered the sando mild since I'm a wimp lol. Mild was still flavorful and nice subtle kick. The slaw pairs really good in the sandwich. Chicken was nice and crispy. Fries were average crinkle cut but the seasoning makes it good. The sauce is really good here. Similar to Canes but way better. This had my eyes watering, my nose sniffling, and my stomach hurting... but it was delicious. Very well seasoned and the chicken so juicy and tender. Big size too! Second time around I learned my lesson and stuck to Medium Plus and tried the tenders. I got lucky with huge tenders! This was a very tolerable spice level. It's next to a convenience store where they seem to share a small parking lot, but there is additional street parking too. We ordered the Sando Meal with mild spice level, which (I think) uses thigh meat so it was definitely more moist. I think I could have handled one more spice though too. My personal preference is more well-done fries but these were crinkle cut with some spices which was still good. We also had the tenders but I preferred the sandwich. My team at work likes to order here and then send a runner to pick it up. I decided to pick some up for my ohana without realizing they use peanut oil. Sheesh, scary stuff and that was it for da ohana. My work team, on the other hand, still likes to go. Love the fries, that spice they use is kickin' and the sando is mouth watering. My big complaint is consistency. Order the medium every time and getting the right heat experience is almost like going fishing. Sometimes it's mild and chill, other times it's a scorcher, and once in a while, you smile and feel they got it right. For me that is key, I need to know what I am getting and they get it right maybe 30 percent of the time. For baseball, that is a decent ERA, but for food, nah that's not right. And then, every now and then, someone else gets there first and picks up our order. Not real big on the apologies or making sure peeps picking up the right bags. Chicken Sando 10/10: Bread was soft and sweet, chicken was cooked perfectly all throughout which made it super soft and easy to eat. Wasn't messy at all. Definitely would order again Mac & Cheese 2/10: The seasoning on the Mac wasn't really good or there, it tasted almost watered down if I could put it into words? but the noodles were pretty good nevertheless. Blend of the coleslaw, pickles, sweet buns (not too thick and carby either), spice level and a bite of the chicken was amazing. This is a solid fried chicken sandwich! Etou Fries - 3/5 it's basically chicken gumbo over fries. I think the fries were separately seasoned and then the gumbo was placed on top of it, ultimately being super salty and on the heavier side. I ordered it medium plus. When I opened the box, to my surprise, the chicken was not red at all! It was more like a mild plus. After taking a bite, it appears they only seasoned one side with spice. I love how there is also so much character in this location. It is small and can be passed by if you're on mission but you'll be missing out if you don't come grab a meal. Have not gone to original Hot Boys yet but I was excited to hear about this one opening. They're operating out of a food truck parked in a small lot. Supposedly they will permanently be a food truck. For now they are only serving tenders but the guy said they may eventually start to serve dark meat. Flavor is pretty good and crispy.
