The one star is specific for this location of World Market, and in no way should be interpreted as my overall feeling for the World Market brand. The staff here could use a refresher course in customer service 101. Trying to make a return here is worse than pulling teeth, because when you're getting a tooth pulled they'll at least shoot you up so you don't feel the pain. Here at the Evanston World Market? Not so much. There was a person (manager?) standing in front of a computer, and since the single cashier had a substantial line I went to her for assistance. She didn't seem interested. She told me to wait, and then stared at the computer screen for 5 minutes, and then after a heavy sigh and an eye roll asked what I needed. I felt as if I were an inconvenience, and couldn't wait to get out of there. The lesson I learned was, my World Market on Broadway in Chicago is a hidden oasis, with a staff that is amiable, smiles and cares about it's customers. read more

There is a great selection of unique items here! Sadly, though, I have found many products to be broken or have missing parts. There are seldom any store associates in the aisles to help with questions; as well. When I do spot an employee to approach, they act as though they didn't see me, and walk the the other way. I assume that they are on their way to stock mismatched teaspoon sets. Lastly, there is usually only one cashier in the checkout lane; and I wait on average ten minutes to check out. I think that if this store was better staffed and the employees paid more attention to the quality of the products, it would be a fine place to shop! read more

I love everything about World Market. It's a great place to wander around whether or not you actually want to buy something. I especially love it for getting inexpensive but memorable gifts, unique kitchenware, and yummy candy. I always make sure to stop by here if I'm going to see a movie next door to stock up on munchies (jordan almonds beat out popcorn in my book any day). There's a wide selection of wines, furniture, specialty bath soaps, scented candles, jewelry, fancy gift wrap.... you just have to go in and see it for yourself to get a true feel for it. This place is like Pier One meets Sur la Table meets Trader Joe's. They sell everything you would ever need to throw a smashing party. The staff is friendly, and they have amazing goods from around the world. Their wine selection takes up an entire 8th of the store all in the corner with world beers and mixers. It is as if the clerks in this store are allergic to the registers. When you want to make a purchase, they all disappear as they did this afternoon, Monday, Oct. 8, 2018. And if they do have to ring, they become crabby. I'll no longer shop at this store after hearing a cashier today speak very rudely to a customer in front of me who seemed to be trying to purchase something on back order. Wow. This is the place I hate to love! Everytime I go in there, I see something I want or have to have...my wallet is snarling at me! They have a super selection of gifts, food, wine, furniture, kitchen stuff, garden stuff, pillows, etc...etc... The last time we were in, we saw a wonderful carved giraffe from Africa that would go great in the corner of our living room. She was a beauty - delicate features, long legs, soulful eyes...I could go on and on.... I think we've got about 3 or 4 treasures around our place that traveled the world to find us. I love their cards and giftwrap, too - pretty unique selection. The only flaw is the windchime we bought last year fell apart pipe by pipe. I love this place! It's like a mix of Marukai/the 99 cent/dollar store and Costco (sort of). World Market has the best gummies ever. And that's saying a lot, because I'm a huge gummy fan. :] Anyway, the employees there are really great, completely friendly, and kind. Prices have been rising steadily over the years. I still come pretty often since it's the only place in Evanston (that I know of) that carries some Latino-American soft drinks (like Cola Champagne from El Salvador and Inka Cola from Peru). They have some nice plating plates for those events where you just need to impress company. It isn't cheap, but it's convenient. They have beer and wine tasting events every once in a while -- it's not a bad idea to check in to see if a new event is posted every once in a while. read more

Love this store - don't let the name deceive you, it's far more than just a market. I live nearby and find myself wandering in here regularly and typically wandering out with at least a few new items. This store is well laid out, usually well kept and clean, and has incredibly friendly and helpful staff. I'm a huge fan of their extensive and ever rotating wine section in the back left corner (seriously amazing finds usually for no more than $15), their make your own 6 pack of seasonal and artisanal beers and the seasonal home decor. So many home goods have found their way into my apartment from vases to rugs to kitchen accessories that it's a running joke with T and me that our apartment is 50% from world market. Can be a little overwhelming given the huge range of products but at a minimum check out their wine and global foods sections - you are bound to find something awesome read more

Love love love World Market! I can find things from household items to furniture to food to jewelry! I am moving into a new apartment and recently bought a few things from World Market for my place. I found a bookshelf for $60, which is probably at least $100 cheaper than anywhere else I was looking. Granted, this shelf is not all solid wood and has more of an open design, which probably explains the price difference. Regardless, I was impressed. I also bought a huge print to hang in my living room. It was more money than I was looking to spend ($120) but is absolutely gorgeous. The staff at the Evanston location is friendly and are more than willing to help carry bigger items for you, either through the store to the registers, or out to your car. I actually had 2 or 3 people help me at different points and none of them seemed to mind! I will definitely be back for some smaller items before my move! I can always find something new that I want for a great price! read more

I love World Market; love the prices, love the selection, and love the diversity of items. I've been to both the Sheffield location as well as this one in Evanston and have to say that the staff at the Sheffield location was more accommodating. Perhaps, they have more people? Without getting into too much detail, I was in to pick up an item I had on hold and was ignored by every person in the store for a good 15 minutes until I ran after someone to ask for help. I was one of maybe 4 customers, all of whom were roaming around like I was. Once I did get someone, however, he was extremely helpful. read more

I always insist on going in here when we're in Evanston because of their wine and snack selection. Oh, and if you're a member you get discounts on EVERYTHING. Lychee gummies? Awesome service! I had visited the store in Kildeer earlier that day looking for double-handled soup crocks. The Kildeer store was sold out of them. I was going to dinner in the area so I decided to call this location to see if they had any left. I called and spoke with a very professional and polite sales associate. He told me that they did have some in stock. I asked if he could put them on hold for me and he said that he could. Also, their hold policy is 48 hours so they would still be there for me through Monday evening. I went to the store after dinner, picked up my soup crocks and was super pleased. This place is awesome. Staff are friendly, they have flat out cool and unique stuff, and their "membership thing" saves a ton of money. We come here whenever possible, whether it's to buy a fun wine or some furniture, we have had good experiences every time with have come here. It's not unlike going to a cultural grocery store - they have plenty of things from a few select cultures, and some awesome mini hotsauces along with a good variety of teas. We happened to arrive early for our movie in Evanston. I decided to pass the time in the World Market nearby. I usually go to the one in Northbrook. It's hard not to buy anything here. Everything is cheap, fun, and useful! I had a $10 coupon burning a hole in my phone... so I found $30 worth of stuff in no time and popped up the coupon at the register. Easy money! I always, always get the Cucina & Amore Bruschetta (Piquillo & Artichoke) 7.9 oz jar. It costs about $3. You just dump it on a small goat cheese log, pop it in the toaster oven at 350 degrees for 10 min, and you have this AWESOME spread. All my relatives request it when I have a dinner at my house. But, I digress.... If you are in Evanston and have time to waste before a movie go here. You can even pick up some unusual candy for the movie! (But don't tell them I said that!) read more

I definitely recommend becoming a member - you get discounts on everything (especially wine!), and all they need is your email, which in my experience, doesn't spam me. They have a lot of international foods here. They also carry the specific altoids flavor i like (ginger!) so I always have to come in to refill on those. I absolutely love this place! Yeah usually I just come here for window shopping, but I have a fun time looking around at the home décor items and furniture. It's a bit on the pricey side to me, but it gives me ideas on decorating. During the holidays I will buy a few items from here to spruce up my place. The reason why I visited this location in particular though is it's right next to the movie theather and I came to stock up on some snacks before the show. I have been shopping at this location since the day it opened. The one thing that never changes is that everyone with an apron is constantly in motion refilling the shelves, answering questions or moving people through the checkouts. The faces change but the level of friendly engagement and activity hasn't. I visited earlier today, picked up my monthly supply of Lace cookies, Tam Tam's and a few things I didn't need then went next door to a movie. Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely hate, hate shopping. Yeah, can you believe it -- a female who hates shopping!?!? I walked by this store and saw all this prodigious stuff and had to go inside to investigate. I was having a lot of fun walking around and discovered that it is spirited, eclectic and a wildly different retailer. It is a treasure chest of international /national products. I loved what I saw at this store! It made my experience interesting and fun. For example, there were beautiful, colorful baskets from Bali, chocolates from Belgium and Switzerland, pottery from Portugal, and so may other things. They carry a myriad of products, from furniture, pillows, lamps, floor and window coverings, frames, garden decor, collectibles, table top and kitchen accessories. Impressive. I also noticed they sell gourmet foods and wines from around the world to complement any meal. I ended up purchasing Nyåkers Ginger Snaps which are traditional Swedish ginger snaps. The tin that they are packaged in was (is) so beautiful, which is really why I purchased them. To my surprise, I put them out when we had guests over for dinner one evening, and they were gone that same evening! Everyone said they were incredibly light, crispy and delicious with their coffee. I am now using the beautiful tin for storing our dog and cat treats. Another item that I was surprised to find here was (is) Villa Blanca Antiox Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Spain. It is organic and brings a delightful taste to the tip of your tongue when used in meats, salads, pasta or vegetable dishes. For $6.99, I purchased two bottles of the Villa Blanca olive oil. Finally, I purchased Goldkenn milk and dark chocolate bars from Switzerland, which came in a beautiful gold package with six praline chocolate bars. I gave this to a good friend who is a major choc-o-holic. The store is well systematized. It was clean. Customer service alone is 5-star worthy. I prefer shopping on-line, but if I am ever in the area again, I would definitely return. PARKING (Tip): Parking across the street is FREE on weekends. Street parking can be challenging. The parking lot across the street is large, and there is always ample parking. In the end, it was a fun experience. So I generally love world market. Great selection of wines. Great durable furniture. Nice jewelry. The hubs and I normally go to the one in the city but our furniture piece that we wanted was out of stock so we called ahead to reserve a buffet table at the Evanston one. On a rainy 45 minute trek from the city we made our way to the store. We easily spotted a worker to retrieve and pay for our table. My hubs had a 10% off coupon, which basically covered tax. But as he was paying I was browsing and found a pair of towels that I liked and wanted. So the hubs goes up again about 10 minutes after making the previous 400$ purchase and asks if they would honor the 10% discount that he just used. And the woman said "no". So the hubs asked if he could return the previous purchase and start over and she still said "no, you'd lose the 10%". And then he asked if a manager could override it and make an exception and she still said "no that's not possible". WTF. We had purchased the $900 matching dining set at the other world market (on sheffield, which was great) and they let us use a coupon without physically having it. That's customer service!! And all I wanted was 10% off a pair of towels. It wasn't about the 2$ I would've saved. It's the principle. And we just spent $400 at your store. Show some courtesy. Everyone else in the store was very helpful. But I'm sticking to the one in the city. read more

I love Cost Plus. Granted, I probably would not buy their furniture, but the decorative items and foodstuffs are wonderful and their is always some interesting little tchotchkes to look at. Things I particularly like here are the large selection of sugar free coffee syrups, the nice hrow pillow assortment, and interesting kitchen items. This location is better stocked than the one near Old Orchard and I prefer it. Seasonal specialties include neat orange flavored coffee at Easter and a large assortment of Christmas ornaments. Not a sound, long-term investment with furniture, the first piece purchased being the only exception. It also was the most inexpensive [2016]. Otherwise, garbage. Skeleton staffed store. Lines at the registers built up quickly and they went down very, very slow on weeknights and some Saturday evenings. The evening manager [Doug] was either in the front or the back of the store drinking coffee, conversing with coworkers and customers. Seemed one of the other managers [Madison] practically lived in the store office. Didn't seem happy to come out of it when paged either. She's knowledgeable. She acted nice but I found her disingenuous and a bit of a rude ... So sorry I spent over $1,500 + in some - not all - substandard merchandise and "customer" service.
