Great food and fun atmosphere! Asian fusion with a hip hop twist. Our group of four friends went to Wu Chow on a Friday night. We had reservations and only waited a few minutes for our table. Hip hop plays in the background, and most of the cocktail names have a hip hop reference. Of course, I can't remember any of them now, lol! My drink had blueberry vodka, grapefruit, and sparkling wine- kind of their twist on a French 75. It was light and refreshing, although it got a little too heavy on the grapefruit toward the end. We got tons of dishes to share. My favorites were the honey pecan prawns, and the wu chow fried rice- lots of meat chunks (shrimp, chicken, pork) throughout. The green beans were also delicious, and we got a "secret menu" item as well- the braised beef, which was tender and delicious. I can never handle soup dumplings correctly, so they were just ok to me. I love the food at Wu Chow - their Singapore noodles are soooo yummmm! It qualifies to be a fancy restaurant, so you can expect a nice ambiance and good service. I remember the first time that we went to Wu Chow and had ordered veganfried rice as one of the dishes ,the chef accidentally added thai chilli instead of scallions! And we almost blacked out LOL! The way they handled that situation spoke a lot about the quality of their service and the care for their customers. Most recently, I visited them back for brunch. Really nice food, my only complaint is that the brunch menu hardly has any vegan protein options. It's full of starch, carbs and fat. Went here with a large group. First, they seated us outside and it was hot. Not necessarily their fault as an event planner Boones it but they didn't even put our two tables next to one another which was odd. Apps were chicken egg rolls which were good and some sort of fried chicken small plate that was unremarkable but some folks liked it. For dinner, we all shared crispy snapper - good, tangerine beef- ok, and Singapore noodle, also good. We then had potstickers which were oddly tough and went in-finished/not great and pork soup dumplings that weren't hot, and were so thick they were chewy- and went unfinished. We had the Tangerine Peel Beef (highly recommended, with a lot of deliscious tangerine peel), the nightly special shrimp with fermented greens (which we very much enjoyed), and their shanghai dumplings (we've never met a soup dumpling I didn't love, and of course we loved these). We also tried a couple of their signature cocktails. They don't have a dessert menu but they say they're working on one. We came on a Tuesday night without a reservation. We found free parking and were seated right away. All the servers and staff were very friendly and attentive. And the food came out of the kitchen quickly. It's really important to note that the weekday menu and the Sunday dim sum can be vastly different experiences, so consider that when you visit here. Personally, I think the dim sum Sundays are a bit better, but the weekday options aren't bad either! The vibes here are pretty nice: dim "romantic" lighting with some light Chinese-inspired accentuations. There's a bar for all you avid drinkers, and their bathroom has a fancy ROCK sink. The hosts and waiters have all been super nice and helpful with explaining menu items, making suggestions, etc. As for the food: Sichuan Spicy Wontons, 1/10 or 10/10. This menu item is VASTLY different depending on when you go. The weekday dinner version is overly doughy and lacks flavor. But the Dim Sum version is absolutely delicious. Tangerine Peel Beef - 9/10. Great flavor and texture. Simply prepared really well. Singapore Noodles - 8/10. Nice choice for a noodle dish and comes with a wide assortment of meats and veggies. Sichuan Braised Eggplant - 9/10. I decided I wanted dumplings for dinner one night in Austin and so we walked over to Wu Chow. They were fully booked but had full open bar seating which we decided to take. We ordered: + Hot & Sour Soup: offered per bowl, this soup hit the soul. There was a mushroom or bamboo piece in each spoon. + Honey Pecan Gulf Prawns: your typical walnut prawns. + Local Mushroom Stir Fry: mushrooms with local vegetables like celery and peas which was super flavorful. They served this with a bowl of rice which we did not eat it with. + Pork Soup Dumplings: meaty dumplings with a nice broth inside. The dumplings were on the larger scale so it was hard to plop it all in your mouth in one go. Din Tai Fung is my favorite and I consider it the standard. These were just as good. + Vegetable Dumplings: super flavorful. Filled with a lot of veggies and it went well with the dipping sauce. + Thyme Me Up: Gin, Elderflower, Thyme cocktail. It was so refreshing with all the small plates. Our server was super sweet and checked up on us frequently as he was behind the bar. Unfortunately it was a 2 star experience here (Could've Been Better). Chalk this one up to the typical Austin over-hype-over-priced-place with lots of anticipation and sugar-coated-press only to underdeliver and underwhelm. Sorry, but I know dim sum, and I was not impressed. Allow me to elaborate. I miss Dim Sum, as do a lot of Austinites. My favorite place was that New Fortune Seafood Restaurant on N. Lamar that shut down during the pandemic. They were classic dim sum, a lot of variety and options, it wasn't perfect but it was pretty darn good. So Wu Chow - it's been on social media. People pumping it on Reddit and Insta, raving about this place. I bookmarked them and one Sunday I happened to be in the neighborhood and stopped by for a visit. First thing - the outside table they sat me at was sticky, it was not completely cleaned. That really irked me. Tip top cleanliness doesn't seem to be a priority here, I did not see a lot of wash cloths or wiping down tables and chairs as people came and left. I got some feedback from the server and surfed through Yelp's pics and picked the high runners, here's a rundown: - The best thing I had were the Mala Ribs. They were pretty good. Crispy and suttle seasoning, I do recommend these. - The next best thing I had were the Crispy Turnip Cakes. They had good flavor and I really liked the slightly sweet soy dipping sauce they came with. Everything else after those 2 items were downhill from here, subpar to mediocre. The biggest criticism was that most of these dishes had the similar flavor profile. It was the same sichuan chili oil base and flavor, and they would just add vinegar or sugar or soy to it to change it up. So I felt like I was eating the same flavor with most everything I had, the flavors lacked differentiation which I am used to when eating dim sum. I hope that makes sense. Shanghai Pork Soup Dumplings (everyone raves about them) were really disappointing. It contained way too much vinegar inside of it - very pungent and was not good. After one of these I was done. They also love the Pork & Shrimp Shumai - a dumpling I am familiar with - these had a strong fishy taste to them that was a turnoff to me. It was not a good flavor, eating one of these and I was done with them. I do not recommend. Both dipping sauces were the same - disappointing. Salt & Pepper Shrimp were okay. Not awesome but okay, just a little on the wet side but if you like shrimp you will like these. Sticky Rice w/ Sausage was okay, believe it or not it was not as flavorful as it looks or as I expected, just okay. I also waited way too long for this dish - at least 15 min - and no one gave me an update or warning about it. I had to ask 2 servers to check on it for me. That wasn't cool. Dan Dan Noodles looked appetizing, but they were really dry. I cannot explain it but just dry and maybe poor execution in the kitchen. A few bites and I was done. The spicy cucumbers were good, but again another similar sichan sauce with some soy and vinegar added - a repeated taste and flavor profile here that I was already getting tired of experiencing. And all that was $82! Eighty-two bucks for 2 good plates and several others that had similar sichuan chili oil flavor profiles, too much vinegar, dry noodle dish, and mediocre experiences. I'm sorry but I've never paid $82 for one person for dim sum, and if I pay that much then I expect to be wowed or have some great dishes, and that did not happen. Very underwhelming experience. Not to mention half the dishes they brought out were wet with soy sauce and really made a mess of the table when they placed down my dishes. Service here could have been much better as well. So I think it's safe to say I've crossed this dim sum place off my list and won't be back for that. I was thinking of checking out the beef orange peel dish or the sichuan chicken amongst others, but this was such a disappointment I'm not nearly as motivated to come back and spend more premium $$ here. read more

The quality of food at Wu Chow is fantastic. The taste and texture of the food is perfect. Service from staff has always been phenomenal. Price point for Chinese food is a bit higher than I'd normally pay, but the vibe and location of the restaurant makes it work it. A great place for Asian food served family style with small plates, and entrees with a variety of meat, sea food and veg dishes. We went here after work to celebrate a co-worker's work anniversary on a Monday evening. We were seated promptly and the service was quick and friendly. Our waters were refilled regularly, which we appreciated given the warm weather and spicy food! They have indoor and outdoor seating with a combination of 2,4,6 seater and larger tables making it great for a post work outing. We got the veg dumplings, Sichuan tofu - a unanimous favorite if you can tolerate the spice, to start our meal. We also tried the two faced noodles, a delightful concept where they're crunchy if you eat them immediately and they soften if you wait for a bit and the Sichuan eggplant that was served with a side of rice. They were kind enough to give us some complimentary mango sorbet which was perfectly flavored and great in the Austin heat for dessert to complete our celebration. It was also extremely salty which made it harder to eat and we didn't finish it. The service unfortunately wasn't great either. Wu Chow is a vibe in Downtown Austin. We arrived earlier than our reservation and the host was very accommodating and they got us seated with only a short wait. The dishes are pretty big, perfect for sharing. I really enjoyed the steamed chicken dumplings. They were stuffed and huge, the picture really doesn't do it justice. The inside was steaming hot and wrap was the perfect thickness and I like how mild the sauce was, but it complemented the dumpling well. The Two-Faced crispy noodles is a cool dish to try. The noodle's softness keeps changing as you eat and mix more. I loved the crispness at first, then I mixed it up and the noodle became like lo me in. The flavors were balanced and robust. I met some friends here for happy hour. There is street parking and I believe valet(?). I just used street parking so I'm not sure how the valet works or if it charges. The happy hour is available only at the patio or bar. They have a really nice patio, however it can get loud with the street noise. The happy hour is a good value. I had the house white (Pinot Grigio) and my friends had 2 cocktails (Lou-Chow and the Tiki-Lychee). All the drinks were refreshing. Off the happy hour menu, we had the dumpling flight (only did the pork), deep fried chicken, spicy wontons (not that spicy if you're worried), and the green beans. The highlights were for me were the fried chicken and the green beans. The fried chicken had a lot of flavor and in small enough pieces so it was easy to share. The green beans were soooo good! The pricing was a bit pricey for some of the items, but the food overall was pretty good. We ordered the pork soup dumplings, shrimp ha gow, pork and shrimp shumai, shrimp stuffed eggplant, crispy sausage turnip cakes, chicken & taro eggrolls, and the gai-lan broccoli w/ oyster sauce. Everything that had shrimp or pork in it was juicy and meaty, which was nice because they didn't skimp out on meat. The broccoli was decent but could've been better if there was more sauce. My least favorite of everything we ordered was probably the chicken & taro eggrolls as they were super long and skinny and lacked a hearty filling inside. Service was extremely disappointing. It took 27 minutes from the time we sat down to get a cocktail, despite being told what we ordered was a batched drink. Empty appetizer plates and glasses were never cleared, and water was never refilled; I eventually had to get up and refill it myself. The food was good, but it didn't make up for the lack of service. The tangerine peel beef was better than the scallion-hugging beef. The prawns are always a must order, and the xiao long bao dumplings remain a highlight. Overall, this experience was a major disappointment compared to past visits. Pork belly also very flavorful but I would've liked a little crispiness to them. My friend ranted and raved about the honey pecan shrimp and due to my nut allergy we ordered without the pecans. The breading was not overbearing, they had the right amount of crunch and sauce. What is TAKEOUT TAX and PACKAGING FEE?!?! So, not only did I not cause dishes or make you clean up my table and I got charged 5% for takeout boxes and paid another 10% for NOT eating in the restaurant? What the actual hell. Nothing was posted at the establishment for these hidden fees. What a scam of a place. Sure they took the fees off after I complained, but I should have never had to even have this conversation. I asked, if I had dined in, ate none of my food and asked for boxes if i would be charged the packaging fee. Answer: no. I asked, if I had dined in, would I see a dine in fee? Answer: no. So why am I paying 15% more to take out when take out boxes are free when dining in and I've made no mess for staff to clean up after - no table, no dishes - but am charged for taking food home that I then have to clean up myself. I was told the packaging fee is for them to recoup their supply costs for take out boxes, but then everyone dining in and leaving with leftovers should also be charged, but they're not. Where is the sense in that. It's not about the money, it's the principle. I would have gladly paid 20% gratuity ON MY TAKE OUT, like I do at every other establishment. Under impressed after hearing all the rave about this place. Had a reservation placed a week in advance and arrived maybe 5 min early. Hostess was not very friendly and said we did not have a reservation despite showing the confirmation. If you've been to Lin for dim sum, you've basically been to Wu Chow. The food is for the most part identical (which is by no means a bad thing). Similar to when I dined at Lin, I again brought my immigrant parents to share this experience. Not surprisingly, they also liked Wu Chow. Prices are on the higher end for the dim sum but the ambiance and quality make up for it. For better or for worse, dining at Wu Chow pretty much requires a reservation so advanced planning is a must. The only major negative when comparing to Lin is parking since Wu Chow requires either street parking or paid garage parking. Otherwise, I'd be happy to come back here. For what it's worth, my mom made a reservation for Wu Chow while we were in the middle of our meal for their next visit to Austin later this month. read more

My favorites were the honey gulf prawns and green beans! The soup dumplings were good, but not the best in Austin. The chow fun and crispy beef were my next favorites. My brother and I were interested in checking out Wu Chow for some trendy dim sum as a midday snack. The menu itself is pretty extensive. We ordered 4 dishes between the 2 of us: -Pork & Shrimp Shumai -Sichuan Spicy wonton -Crispy Shrimp Wonton -Dandan noodles The dandan noodles were my favorite! It was super tasty and was actually pretty generously portioned. The crispy shrimp wontons were okay, but didn't have much flavor to it. The drizzle of sauce did not really add to the dish. I really like Wu Chow when going to dinner with a big group of friends. It's a family style environment and you can give full freedom to your waiter to order the right amount for your table and get you the best things on the menu, I highly recommend going that route. If you're going for a date night, you're going for the soup dumplings and staying for the pecan prawns. Wow those prawns are good!! It comes with a side of rice too. The drinks are good, though a little pricey. They have a great brunch and happy hour menus and you can make a reservation on open table! Give them a try!! Wu chow is our favorite place for dinner in Austin. We first tried 4 years ago, and totally fall in love with it. I like their atmosphere as well. Such a nice romance place that with delicious food. Some dishes that highly recommended. - Beef chow fun, everyone loves it, right?! It is the best main dish we ever tried in different Chinese Cuisine. The favor is just right, not too much or too light. - Chengdu Chili Chicken, spicy warning, but it's so good! Tender chicken breast with some spicy carrots, cabbages and beans. We were glad that this chili chicken dish has some veggies in it, so we are able to order one more meat dish! - Honey Pecan Gulf Prawn, huge prawn! Love this dish at the first try! Love this place.
