probably i'm not the best person to review this because i don't eat meat or drink beer but i've been a fan of kenji for a while so had high hopes. the food was a solid 3 but the portions were generous for the price and the atmosphere (think fun cafeteria) was chill and not too loud. lots of space at 6pm on a saturday night. pretzel - very soft and warm. i would get it again. vegetarian turkish sausage - the flavors were all over the place. nothing about it was bad, but it didn't really cohere. actually the best part about this was the triple baked potatoes! they were sooo crispy (tho a bit underseasoned) and their ketchup is really good too. potato salad - i'm not a big fan of potato salad in general so i can't talk about this deviled eggs - these were great. very strong hint of mustard. spaetzle - this was the biggest disappointment, compared to the spaetzle at Schmidt's in SF (now closed). the crispy breadcrumbs were nice, but the noodles were too soft and the entire thing mostly tasted like butter with a hint of cheese. read more

It's a bit pricey but also a worth it experience. I'd say to go for it! They have many tables outside and heaters if it gets chilly. I decided to go with the bier bratwurst which is composed of ground pork sausage, a nice bun, topped with sauerkraut and bavarian sweet mustard. Delicious! The sausage had a good snap to it and was paired super well with the tangy sauerkraut and amazing flavor of sweet mustard! I loved it. It was harmony. The bun was nice and toasty too. The dilly slaw was pretty good. It is pretty tangy and composed of shredded cabbage and red onion. The haus potato salad is sliced into discs and is also tangy from the vinegar, sprinkled with mustard seed, and red onion. Both very good! The wood fired pretzel is very chewy and delicious with the honey butter dip. The butter is a little hard to dip into though. Ok, I loved Wursthall the 2 times I visited. I thought the wursts were absolutely delicious with the Chorizo Verde being my favorite. The bun is quite perfect - crunchy yet soft and chewy. The wurst was full of flavor and incredibly juicy. And the toppings added just the right extra amount of crunch. Sides - the potato sides are great. So is the chickpea/carrot salad, though I don't care too much for them. Appetizers - the pretzel is lovely - crunchy, comes out warm, and super doughy inside. I also love the honey butter it comes with. Deviled eggs are pretty standard, not sure I'd order them again, though. Service has always been spot on - staff are so friendly and accommodating. The outdoor seating is pretty nice - heaters at every table and the picnic tables themselves are very spacious. We stopped by on a Saturday afternoon with a couple of friends. The space is very open with many seating options... picnic style tables in the middle, and booth + chair tables along the perimeter. Our party of 4 enjoyed sampling the menu! We got a few different types of bratwurst, the deviled eggs, pretzel, and spaetzle and cheese. The bratwurst portions are huge and came with a good selection of salad, slaw, or potato sides. The appetizers were also good! I got the hard kombucha, and friends got the sour beer, and other beers I didn't catch the name of, but came in the fun Oktoberfest-style glasses. You order and pay at the same time from QR codes which can be convenient if you're with a group of friends and everyone wants to pay separately. Because of this set-up, service is pretty hands-off but friendly and attentive. I saw folks coming in just for drinks, one couple was setting up a board game to play, and groups of friends like mine there to catch up and eat. I'm sad to have to update my review and take off 2 stars, but unfortunately my husband and I had a less-than-ideal experience at Wursthall tonight. The main (and only) problem was the food. We got Kenji's fried chicken sandwich ($16), which was so spicy it was almost inedible. I have had this before for lunch and it was very tasty then, and the spice was medium. Tonight for some reason it was WAY too spicy. My mouth is still burning now, an hour later and after chugging a bunch of water. I couldn't taste anything else or enjoy any of the other food after taking a couple bites of the fried chicken. The porchetta bratwurst ($16) was at least edible and non-spicy, but tasted pretty fatty. I love sausages and fatty foods in general, but this tasted more fatty than other sausages I've had, so I was not that impressed. The best parts of either of these dishes was the fried potatoes that came with them, which were hot and crispy. We also got the Hefeweizen beer, which was tasty, but not worth $8. Overall we spent almost $50 on a meal that was not very good. Other than the food though, the rest of the experience was fine. We were seated quickly and the restaurant uses a QR code at each of its outdoor benches to make for easy ordering through a website. There are heat lamps available - even though they weren't on when we were there, I imagine they would be a great touch on chillier nights. The food came out quickly. You sit down and scan the QR code/order and they bring the food to you. The service wasn't great, they took forever to bring our orders and forgot the beers we had ordered. In general, also the food was just okay! 1. Sauerkraut Käsedilla: wow. Loved the spin take on a regular quesadilla. The sauerkraut blended so well with the pickled Fresno chiles and cheeses. I absolutely loved the dipping mustardy hot sauce, was such a great addition. 2. Smashed cheeseburger: loved the well seasoned and cooked meat. The added pickled peppers were so flavorful. Probably my favorite beer hall since I found this gem during covid. At the time they had SO MUCH outdoor seating but that's all been removed with a few tables left outside against their wall for customers with doggies. The food really is just meh here. The staff at Wursthall do their absolute best to ensure all parties are separated for good health standards. Their staff also diligently clean the bench tops immediately after parties leave to maintain cleanliness. That's a plus! My bf and I came here for dinner tonight and got the curry fried potatoes starter, smashed burger, and the chorizo dog. The curry fried potatoes was pretty tasty. Was looking for a place to grab dinner and came across Wursthall on Apple Maps when I was looking for a place I had been before in San Mateo. After a short detour to check out their website, we decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed. This place is clean, light, and has traditional bier hall community seating. The menu is fairly well explained, I just wish there was some more customization (partner doesn't like cilantro and we wished to have that left off as I know it was just a dusting over the top that could be easily left off). We ordered a handful of items as I had a desire to try an assortment of the offerings. We had the Korean hot chicken bites (10/10, amazing house ranch), Al Pastor wurst (8/10), Currywurst (7/10, only docking bc of the cilantro), and the Käsespaetzle (15/10, wow). I'll have to admit I was slightly disappointed in the Toast ordering platform and beer selection as I think there are some other German Biergartens in the area that have more extensive offerings. The snap of the sausage is perfect and the thrice-fried potatoes was a perfect accompaniment. Korean Hot Chicken Bites - very well done. The spice blend doesn't overwhelm the enjoyment factor of this dish. The yogurt ranch dip made for a clean and refreshing bite. Mac and Cheese - I don't know any other place that puts rosemary in their mac but it's a great addition. This mac and cheese is definitely a step up from the standard expectation. I visited Wursthall with my dad to kill some time on the way to dropping him off at SFO for a red-eye flight. I went into the experience feeling kind of lukewarm. Brats are more his thing than mine, but I was up to try it. Holy moly I am so glad I did, Wursthall was phenomenal! We got the Pesto Chicken and the Porchetta and split them so we could try a little bit of each. WOW! They were both phenomenal, I can't pick a favorite. The brats themselves were phenomenal and well-seasoned, but they were topped with flavorful ingredients that complimented and even amplified the taste of the brats themselves. The buns were also really good and perfectly grilled. All in all, it was a great package in totality. The service was good, but their model isn't a traditional server model. You actually scan a barcode on the table and order via the app and they bring it out to you. That being said, there was always someone around to help us if we needed anything. I've been watching Kenji Lopez-Alt's cooking videos on Youtube for many years. He honestly played a big role in me learning how to be better at cooking just by watching his first person cooking videos and they are very chill to watch. So of course I had to try out his restaurant since I was in the area. Due to Kenji having a following of course there will be high expectations from customers and sometimes could impact the experience, but I personally loved the food. It's also easy to order as my family and I ordered on our phones. In my past couple experiences I got the impossible burger which is a type of burger I don't typically get, but I enjoyed it a lot and it was close to the taste of real beef. For sides I typically opt for the potato salad which has a more unique flavor than the typical potato salads I eat. I've seen Kenji's smash burger videos so I had to get a smashed cheeseburger and it exceeded my expectations! It's very juicy and well made. I also highly recommend the pretzel with cheese dip. Wursthall has many delicious vegetarian and vegan options. And when I say options, I mean gifts from heaven. The impossible meatball sub really is divine. It has a mushroom gravy on it that is magic. It comes with a side of yummy potato salad and salad (actual lettuce with toppings and a lot of it). Their side of mashed potatoes is all you need in life. The kiddos will be happy as well because they have grilled cheese and hotdogs. My 6 year old ate it all up (literally). Oh and the beers! There are so many of them! Including several from my wonderful little country of Belgium. If you want to go easy go for the Blanche de Bruxelles, if you can handle more go for the Karmeliet or St Bernardus. If the owner wasn't popular on YouTube, I don't think this place would be as popular as it is. With that being said, the food was bland and overpriced. The smashed burger was unseasoned and the bun was soggy. The schnitzel was also under-seasoned as well (albeit moist and crispy as advertised). The bratwursts had odd flavor profiles that don't blend well (we had 3 different ones that we didn't like). The sides were awful the thrice fried potato was dry and tasted like a cardboard box. 1/5/23 I dunno if I gave such a high score cuz the previous sausage serving "beer garden" we went to (Copenhagen Sausage Garden in Solvang) dropped the bar soooo low, ....well, probably at least a little cause of that memory, so... take this review with a grain of salt. But for sure, the sausages here are REALLY JUICY, objectively, so they have at least that going for them. 1. HenHouse Juiced! Cherry Lime Sour Gose 13oz $8 "we loaded our refreshing tart and salty brew with cherries and limes! 4% abv": I didn't take notes, but it was certainly tasty, though perhaps not memorable. 5/10 2. Butcher's Special: "Chili Cheese" $16: "our housemade seasonal sausage this time around is an upgrade ont he classic chili cheese...": So,.... this "housemade" sausage might be the best sausage I've had in years. It's thick thick thick (and you girls want it, trust me!), sooooo plump... and as you bite in it SQUIRTS. Sooooo tasty! As for the "chili", that's a REALLY loose interpretation of the word. It's closer to relish than chili. Ummmmm...... how can chili be like relish, you may ask?....... yeah, I'll let you think upon that. Don't think too hard. It works. 10/10 3. Spaetze & Cheese Wood-Fried Pretzel, Side of Bavarian Sweet Mustard $7.25: Alright, so their pretzel kinda sucks. Dry. Strange shaped. I can't see the original description, but I think I picked 2 "sauces": some honey compound butter thing, and this sweet mustard. The mustard's great--not too strong, sweet, and flavorful. The butter........ that sht is weird. For one, it's still hard. And I dunno if that honey they put on top tastes good with the pretzel. 3/10 4. Chicken Schnitzel $21: Interesting. So, first off, when you get this in front of you, you'll be like, WTF this is HUGE. 3 HUGE pieces of schnitzel. But the thing is, they're super thin--pounded and pounded to almost chips! Never had it like this. Unfortunately the chicken was dry and the breading was kinda dry too... but I still kinda like it. It was almost like eating huge fried chicken chips. The salad it came with was good. 7/10 5. Boylan Diet Cola $4: Best diet cola I've tried. VERY herbal. Not much synthetic sugar aftertaste. 10/10 6. Brewdog Hazy AF Non-Alcoholic IPA 12oz Can $5: I was really REALLY REALLY surprised.... it wasn't bad! Definitely does taste like hazy IPA... but I'd say it tastes like a diet version. But for being non-alcoholic (0.5% alc) it was good. 7. Best parts about visiting here - the picnic style seating and the spaetzel & cheese (aka mac n cheese). Since it's a German-themed place, plenty of beers for you to choose from. The food menu itself was alright - we ordered basically one of all the most common items and they were alright (other than the mac n cheese, which I really enjoyed). The fried chicken was alright but not too special (the waffles were a bit doughy and soggy). The currywurst was interesting and I enjoyed the flavor, but it was a bit on the stronger side so I don't think it is for everyone. The pretzel was meh and a bit expensive. The bread and pork butter definitely was not worth it as you only get one slice of bread, so you end up with more pork butter than bread. Service was great until they got full and busy, then it was a bit sparse and hard to flag someone down. They ring you up with a little hand held device right at your table. Parking is street parking (free after 6pm), so its a hit or miss. Get here around or before 5pm to avoid the crowds! read more

Wursthall is a great addition to downtown San Mateo which already has a plethora of restaurants to choose from. Double doors open up to a two story, high ceilings and bright open space. Bench seating for most of the restaurant with a few chairs. A long bar is located right by the entrance. Came here at lunch with a co-worker and tried a few things. Food wise: *Kenji's Korean Fried Chicken ($15) - double-fried chicken thigh, hot chili oil, on a stack of scallion-cornbread waffle with fermented hot sauce and pickles. Chicken was juicy and the skin very crispy drizzled with hot chili oil. The savory scallion cornbread waffle matched well with the chicken and was a nice carb contrast. The side of the fermented hot sauce was spicy and delicious. *Wursts All wursts come on a top-split bun with choice of topping and choice of a side (+$2 for crispy fried potatoes) We tried the Thuringer ($14) Bratwurst which was made with oarsely ground pork and veal, marjoram, brown caraway seeds. Flavorful and good texture. We also tried the Butcher's Special ($14) of the day which seems to change depending on what they make in their Sausage Lab - on the day we went it was actually bulgogi. I was a bit surprised with the choice of meat, but it was still good. A bit sweeter in flavor, but still good texture. *Sides Crispy fried potatoes are just delicious, everything should get this as their side. I've followed Kenji on Serious Eats and have attempted to recreate these at home, sooo good! Potato salad - German style potato salad, with a bit of tang.
