I'm shocked. Stunned. Gobsmacked. Here's why: First time here for a small bite, got one of their little booths and ordered one tuna melt (on nine grains) with fries to share. It was good, nicely grilled, they left off the lettuce and tomato (as per our request). Our server was Sofia, an absolutely adorable young woman , whose friendliness and sweet sincerity is genuinely disarming. In addition to her, the customer service here is fantastic, e.g. here we're splitting one sandwich and what does Sofia ask us? Would you like us to split the sandwich for you on separate plates? And no: there's no extra charge for this! I detest and despise when restaurants upcharge obscene amounts simply to give an additional plate. Ridiculous greed. When it was time for our bill and we asked for it, Sofia explained that there was no charge ... she gave us an explanation, which we initially couldn't follow, so we asked her to repeat it. Apparently there's a regular customer, a gentleman, who when he comes in, picks a table for whom he anonymously pays their bill--and asks the restaurant not to disclose his identity! Whaaaaat? I. Mean. Are you shook? We were in happy disbelief, moons over, not so much for the money but because here's a random act of pure kindness and goodwill and generosity! :-) Wow! Crazy, huh? We were sooooo touched and humbled. The place has a terrific vibe and spirit, an old school diner feel, teal vinyl booths laminated menus and thick beige coffee mugs. We loved Sofia so much and despite not having the bill to pay, asked if we could leave her a tip on our Apple Card or Apple Pay (we didn't have cash). Bay Watch has great breakfast/brunch vibes right in downtown San Mateo. I love that they leave the coffee carafe and water pitcher on your table so you can refill your own beverages. The part I love the most is that they leave a drip catcher tray for the water pitcher so your table doesn't get wet from the condensation. Genius. Food was great. It feels like a classic diner and has a very cozy atmosphere, and the staff are always very nice and accommodating. We usually get seated right away- at most we've had to wait 10 min. They offer great breakfast options like eggs, omelettes, pancakes/waffles, but also some sandwiches and burgers for lunch. I ordered the avocado, bacon, tomato skillet that came with potatoes, cheese, 2 eggs and a side of toast. This is one of my go-tos, the over easy egg is always perfect! My friends ordered the cajun omelette and the popeye omelette- which both come with a bunch of hashbrowns and side of toast as well. Back in the day, this used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but it has made a significant decline over the years. Gone are the days with lines down the block, you can usually get a table with a nominal wait time. Overall the menu hasn't really evolved. They don't offer much as far as a food allergy menu or modifications for gluten and dairy-free customers. Many restaurants offer gluten-free bread, pancakes, and crepes, but they sadly have none. They don't offer fresh squeezed orange juice or any specialty beverages. The crispy hashbrowns I ordered were twice cooked, probably prepared earlier that morning, and heated up for my order because they were really chewy. The bacon was crisp but paper thin. The service was just okay, the wait staff took my order and brought the food and that was the only time we saw them. I love this place. I love Jan, the waitress we've been "seeing" for geez maybe 20 years?! The food is consistent and pretty good - better than a diner and the prices have stayed pretty reasonable. Anytime my kids see a doctor or dentist in the area, they want to be taken to breakfast before I take them to school. Fair enough! Time with my boys! Now they will eat their whole plate of food, a denver omelette for example, and then they will half of a short stack and the rest of the food on my plate. Ordered Popeye Omelette and San Franciscan Crepe, a coffee and an orange juice. Foods were not too bad except the hash brown. The outside was over toasted while the inside felt like mashed potato. Price was also fair too, acceptable for the portion. Unfortunately, my experience with the service was bad. We went in a weekday morning. It was quiet with only a few customers. The waitress led us to a table with torn seats fixed with tapes while the whole restaurant was basically empty. The coffee and juice arrived very fast, but after we told her we still needed a minute to decide what to eat, she just went to the kitchen and chatted for quite a while before she came back. We didn't wait too long for the food considered the kitchen was busy with togo orders. After we finished, I asked the waitress for a box and the check, she went straight to the register, but I waited for 10 minutes just to found out my waitress stood at the register day dreaming looking out the door... so I walked up to her asked her for my bill, she apologized and handed my the check right away. Then, when I was about to leave, she came back to my table with another bill. She asked me if I check the bill because she gave me the check for another table, then she blamed me for not checking the bill before signing it. She apologize after I signed the check she apologized, but told me I should had check the check first... when she was the one who printed me the wrong bill!?? Rarely have I been to a restaurant that has so many problems during one meal. Today, that was Brunch at Bay Watch. We were a party of four. Out of two coffee cups, two of them had lipstick from a prior diner. One water glass had the wing of an insect floating on top. Then the food order. We ordered the special on the board, a crab crepe. The waitress repeated the order while writing it down, then we said two and then three of the same dish. Out comes three crab omelets, not crepes. Three of the four dishes were wrong. We ate them and while it wasn't what we ordered, it tasted ok. When the waitress came by to ask how everything was, I said it was good but not what we had ordered. She said, yes, you did say omelet, so I mentioned that she had said the correct thing while writing the order. She looked at her order sheet and confirmed that we indeed had ordered the crepes, and she wrote the order correctly. To make amends, she brought out a plate of French toast for us to share which wasn't a great solution since we were already full. She put four plates in front of us for this bonus dish and lo and behold, the plate put in front of me was dirty. This was like a few months of restaurant mistakes all piled into a single experience. Went to this premise a long time ago and had a great time. So, we were so excited to revisit on a lovely Sunday morning. I have to say, I wasted time. We had an okay time but that because we refused to be brought down by bad food and service. Took 1 Star off for the quality and taste of the food. My Spanish omelet was lukewarm and blah. The veggies in my friend's Oriental chicken salad was drenched and wilted. The chicken was good though. The Ruben Sandwich was great. But it came with a surprise (see my next item). My husband Salmon Egg Benedict was awesome, tho. Took another star for cleanliness. They "added" fly in my daughter's salsa. You got it right! Fly in the salsa. I'm guessing, It was swimming and drowned in the juice. On top of that, there was lipstick mark on my husband's knife. Catastrophic eeeew! I took 2 stars because of the wait staffs. I waived for somebody after we were sure tht's a fly. A server saw me and said," What do you want?" Waaaaat? What do I want? I want to yelp your rudeness. We told him what we saw and he had the audacity to say," maybe there was fly in the area and fell in your salsa". To that my daughter said, " No, the fly was well marinated in the salsa!" . Just kidding, she informed him that the fly was under the pile of the salsa. If he said sorry afterwards , I did not hear it. I was still irritated by his "What do you want". When our server came, she was genuinely apologetic and really made an effort to remedy the situation. I was ready to ask for a manager and really went for that guy, but My table mates just want to move. So, we moved on to get Philz' cold rose coffee. My other friend ordered the Masterpiece Omelette-Ham, Bacon, Sausage , Mushrooms, Onions, melted Cheeses, and Diced Tomatoes. Topped with Sour Cream. He ate every drop on his plate.
