I love this place and the unique experience it provides. The medieval/fantasy inspired environment, how welcoming it is and variety if meads is excellent. I happened upon it a couple of years ago and had never tried mead before. I ordered tasting flights to figure out which ones suited my preferences. I'm not a fan of overly sweet and was able to discover plenty of kinds I like. I wish I lived closer so that I could go more ofte, but it's well worth the trip when I can make it. Having recently attended my first Renaissance Fair earlier this summer and trying mead for the first time I was thrilled when i discovered this place. The location for me to find was just a little difficult at first. When I thought that I had found my destination, according to my maps app on my phone, it was another establishment that happened to be on street level. Upon further walking around I realized that the establishment is down underground in a basement underneath. (There is a stairway that is accessible from the outside)! I mean, I did see their banner, but I just didn't make the connection that's my bad. Anyway for people looking to find this place It is on the corner of 41st and Holgate and look for the yellow taco food truck out front in the parking lot . When you see that, that's like X marks the spot. You're there! You can even get tacos at the food truck and take them down with you into the Wyrd Meadery! Now walking down the stairway, I felt like I was walking down to an old time medieval entrance. And once I was inside, it's like I was teleported back to the middle ages! The ambience and the decor were outstanding! The theme is totally medieval and if you've ever been to a Renaissance fair this exactly the vibe it gives. I spent a lot of time just exploring every little nook and cranny because it's dimly lit and I wanted to make sure that I could see everything there was to see on their walls. They even have a local artisan that sells his handmade leather goods and provisions that you can purchase. The main seating area with tables in front of a stone fireplace with skulls in the fire is just cool as hell! They have medieval music playing over the speakers so you can totally get into the vibe and feel like you're back in the 13th century England somewhere. I kept halfway expecting the Witcher to walk through the door at any time and sit down and order a bottle of mead and a brick of cheese! LOL! Now for the mead. I'm a total beginner at Mead having only really had it at the Renaissance fair a couple of months prior. The bartender Tyler was so extremely helpful in guiding me on what I might like. Besides him having the same name as my adult son, I instantly took a liking to him. We talked about the different meads that they have and their different flavors. but we also talked about medieval TV shows like Game of Thrones, the Witcher, and Lord of the Rings. And speaking of Lord of the rings, they have a mead there that is inspired by the hobbits Merritt and Pippin called "Second Breakfast". If you go there, you really must try it. It's very good. Also, Travis, the owner came out and talked to me too. Travis also made me feel very welcome. as he in I talked quite a bit as well. In fact, Tyler and Travis, are brothers. So after ordering a 5 ounce glass of a traditional, sweet mead and sampling a few other of the flavored varieties, I did end up bringing home a bottle of the traditional semi-sweet but I easily could've bought so many more. Just be wary the alcohol content of meat is very high at around 13% alcohol by volume! Wyrd is such a cool spot! Great ambience - love the fireplace with the skull in it. I definitely felt like I was in a medieval tavern. The meads are good, with a variety ranging from sweet to dry, so it's fun to do flights. We came as a group of 5 close to when they opened so were able to snag a big table. The only complaint is that there is just one line for ordering drinks and it can get pretty long and slow. read more

Keep Portland Wyrd! This place has been on my must-visit list for a while now, but I'd just never been able to make it happen. This weekend however, my wife and I were seeking a warm refuge from the wet and cold weather, and in scouring my brain for ambient, fire-lit venues to frequent, Wyrd popped up in my brain as exactly what we were looking for: a fireplace to warm us up from the outside, a pint of something to warm us up from within. We had our little Viking with us, but fortunately, minors are allowed up until 8pm. Wyrd's exterior doesn't exactly grab your attention, or give you any idea what to expect, and it would be easy to pass by without having any idea of the glories that lie within. Even the entrance door is a bit difficult to spot, and parking is limited. Once you're inside though, you're immediately transported to another time, another place...somewhere rugged, visceral and, at the same time, cozy and welcoming. An arrangement of Nordic metal music and video game soundtracks enhances the illusion of having strayed into the vaunted halls of Valhalla. The bar lies straight ahead as you enter, and the spacious drinking and dining area, complete with two fireplaces (one at each end), and dim, decorative lighting can hold a fair number of souls...but it fills up quick! We snagged a table near the fire, and ordered a flight of meads: Vanilla Cinnamon, Lavender Citrus, Elderberry, and my personal favorite (and highest ABV on the menu), the Caraway, which boasted a name I cannot recall, couldn't spell it correctly, even if I did, and most certainly couldn't pronounce. The bartender said it was the most divisive selection on the menu, but not to me: it was the clear winner, and likely the only one I will order next time! For those who know nothing about mead (myself included), our bartender was knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the various flavors, offering suggestions for our flight, and shepherding us through the experience with competence and ease. The staff here obviously care, and have a passion for, the products they serve (and craft!) here. God's Blood, I haven't even talked about the leatherworks yet, have I? Uff da! There's a whole shop in the back, hawking everything from homemade honey (figures, right?...that's where mead comes from!), drinking horns, leather cuffs, bracelets, jewelry, journals, bottle holsters, goblets, trinkets and more. If you've seen someone wear it in a mosh pit at a heavy metal concert, you can probably find it here! There were some cons during our visit, but not enough to go full berserker about: masks are still (frustratingly) required while away from your table; is this the only place in Portland still requiring them? Might be. Also, it seems that certain meads frequently are out of stock, so not all options may be available. And despite opening at 3pm, no food was able to be served until the place became fully staffed at 5pm. When the time came, we ordered and tore into the charcuterie board (complete with cheese, spiced jelly, almonds, and delicious sweatymeats...although accompanied by some lackluster crackers) like ravenous wolves! Nitpicks aside, this place is awesome. I'm already planning to return on my birthday, at the very least, to show this place off to my friends, whom I'm sure will similarly appreciate it. Wyrd is the sort of venue, like Raven's Manor, that Portland desperately needs: an evocative theme and aesthetic, intriguing menu offerings, knowledgeable and passionate staff, and a commitment to keeping the Saga of Scandinavian history, heritage and culture alive here, in a far distant land, for one more song...for one more drink! A great time if you're looking for an immersive medieval experience and tasty libations. We came here to celebrate a couple of friends birthdays since they wanted to try some Mead. As a group of 5 arriving around 8pm on a rainy Friday night, we were seated almost immediately. There were a few groups but plenty of space. Food: We ordered two full charcuterie boards ($35 each, good for maybe 2-3 people). A classic staple that pairs well with the drinks. There are digital menus with QR codes. Drink: I ordered the Dansk Mjod Klapojster (caraway), which is a still mead. It has a full-bodied, traditional flavor that is as sweet as it is strong. The classic honeyed aftertaste softens the 21% ABV. While it is stronger than other meads I have tasted in the past, it was still very enjoyable and I would recommend it. Two of my friends ordered their choice of flights. Each come in a set of four cute small cups of ~1.5-2oz pours for $15. We also ordered the Lavender Citrus mead, which offers a very lightweight, almost juice-like sweet but fresh and subtly floral taste. A quick favorite, this is a solid option for those who enjoy something flavorful and easy to drink. We also ordered the non-alcoholic butterbeer, which has a true butterscotch, caramel flavor. I would recommend this as well. Service: First of all, we loved that everyone was dressed up. Servers were kind, quick, and had some great recommendations as well as knowledge of each mead. Checks are digital. Do stick around for the last call ritual, it's impossible to miss. Ambiance: As you enter in on the main level, go to the room on the left and then walk downstairs to find the actual restaurant & dimly lit bar. Great energy here with lots of laughter and nerding out. One of my friends was very keen on the music choice for the night, ranging from traditional Irish folk to WoW. Structure: A mix between a cave, tavern, and a log cabin, with two cozy fireplaces on either side. Ample seating options ranging from tables for two and four to long tables for groups of 6. There are two exits, one towards the entrance staircase, and one to the right of the bar. Decor is tasteful and fun to look at, currently perfect for Halloween. There is a little shop adjacent to the bar, great for walking around and looking at while you wait for food or drink. Parking: Small parking lot attached, but mostly street parking in this part of town. Bathrooms: Two all-gender restrooms with a urinal and a toilet. Facilities work fine but use at your own risk if you have a sense of smell. Perhaps some air fresheners would be nice. All in all, if you're thinking about it, just go! we had a great time and will definitely be back. I highly recommend the Klapojster (caraway) and Lavender Citrus Mead, and the non-alcoholic butterbeer. read more

We had a great time visiting this place as a group. There was a handful of us, so I get that seating was a bit challenging. We had 3 tables reserved, but opted to fill 2 by having 2 people sit at the end of the table. We got scolded and my husband and I had to move away from the group to our own table. Was a bummer, given the mask mandate is about to be lifted, but we did as directed. I'm probably not the best one to rate "meads" as it was my first time trying them and determined I'm not a huge fan. We ordered a 4 sampler and ended up passing ours off to the group to finish. Amazing! This tavern is the beginning of every journey. Not only does every weary traveler take comfort in infinite flavors of mead, but they have two hearths and part of the shop sells wares. It's like a permanent ren faire. It doesn't just feel like home. It is home. This basement space has shared generations of cheer. It used to house a speakeasy, complete with a tunnel to a church across the street. After that, it became a British pub for decades before closing down. The space gives of an eerie yet homely vibe.
