This was my first experience with an escape room, I brought my husband, 11 year old daughter and her best friend to celebrate her birthday. We did the hunting room and it was a good experience. The guy who helped us started off by explaining the general rules and game play. Because I checked in with the Yelp app, they gave us a "free clue". Usually they allow 2 clues, so having the additional one came in handy. The room wasn't very big but it was decorated well, not cheap. There was a fan in the room which made the temp very good, not too hot not too cold. The clues actually made you think and kept us all on our toes. The attendant was very nice and gave us a little extra time at the end so we could finish. Overall we all had a good time. read more

Would not go here again. I have done other escape rooms in the past. Xcapade was not well set up at all. A few of the electronic puzzles did not work. The room was very cheaply set up, and many of the clues did not make much sense, or required really weird math to make work. Take your business elsewhere. read more

This really is zero stars from me but since that isn't awardable, we will start here. In doing MANY escape games, this one pales in comparison. Poor maintenance of the room, non-sensical puzzles, lack of visual appeal and a disjointed storyline. The host was unable to provide clear direction, one of the locks is a 5 position dipswitch where the correct word is 4 letters and a BLANK (*C'mon, buy the correct lock. This is a careless distraction) and overall blah left me regretting every minute past 20 when I realized it just wasn't going to get better. I have been to many escape rooms and this is one of my least favorites. It was just a mess of puzzles. They had good ideas but the execution was awful. They never told us how to get clues so we were waving at the cameras for 10 min when we got stuck on one. When in fact you had to press a red button on the wall that looked like an emergency button. Also the walls are super thin so you can hear all the other rooms going on at the same time. The only thing i really liked was the little mini game they had done you waited. read more

This was the 13th escape room I've been to. We were in a group of 5 and were able to escape the Mummy room. The room itself was pretty good- well set up with immersive puzzles. There was one musical puzzle that was pretty cool but also drove us all crazy. The only downfall is when you ask for a hint, a staff member comes in and helps you out which definitely takes away from the mood. I came here with a group of friends a few months back (total of 4, easy scheduling) to do the Egyptian Room and we had a lot of fun. We've been good at doing escape rooms since we started at Paniq in SF (never took any hints, and can say we didn't take any here either). Of all the escape rooms we've been to so far, this has to be the best organized and thought out from a theme perspective and use of technology/gadgetry to make the mechanics of puzzle solving fun and alluring. I personally felt an Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark vibe while doing the Egyptian room. Our host spoke well, prepared us and was available to talk (we verified something and he followed our progress to check in). Based on other reviews, your mileage may vary. Rating by category: Theme: 5 stars Puzzle Innovation: 5 stars Puzzle Flow: 4.5 stars - some minor things could be made more fool proof (i.e. need to search some things carefully, or slightly glitchy). This is a perfect place for room escape and board game. We played the Lost Kingdom - there are quite a number of puzzles in the room but we were lucky to solve all of them. Got the Groupon so that we could ensure we had a private room. There was 6 of us and it worked out to be about $50/couple which is doable for a night out. This was the first escape room for everyone and I will say that the guy who runs it was super patient with us. Take advantage of the "training room" since getting out of that room is not timed and it lets you acclimate to what it is you are trying. read more

My friend and I did the temple one and it was by far the worst one we have ever done (and we have done over 10). The people were not very nice and made us feel dumb. Also, when you ask for a clue, they basically tell you how to solve the puzzle so it isn't fun. Be aware that you only get 2 clues total. Most of the props weren't in great condition and it's hard to know what are clues and what aren't. Another thing is that they don't have a monitor in the room like most other escape room places do. This means that you have no way of checking how much time is left and the game masters have to manually come in and give us the clue which takes away from the experience. We got to a point where we didn't even finish the room and just walked out; it was that bad. This was a lot of fun. Bought a Groupon for it and went with some friends. We did the Egyptian themed rooms. It was difficult, but the guy running it was so nice and helped us a lot. Super fun experience. We did the Treasury of Empire. The clue is not very hard to find, because we had a very informative clue book. However, to solve these puzzles were tough. I love the idea and would love it more and enjoy it with my family if I could actually solve some clues and go to the fifth and last room. It is either the time is too short to solve all these clues or the clues are too hard to solve. I would rather get one hard clue in each room than so many misleading clues that won't get me anywhere of opening the door to next room. My boyfriend and i did the Lost Kingdom room with an ancient Egyptian theme AND it was ridiculously fun. We had an absolute blast. There were four rooms to get through and we did a great job working with our team. We failed to get out in time but we enjoyed ourselves. The room we did had a 3% success rate and it was definitely a challenge. I LOVE LOVE LOVE escape rooms. This was my first time for escape room game. Since this was my first time to play, our team played the Lost Kingdom, which is the easiest room. The room is well decorated. I like it very much, because it makes us feel like in a real Egyptian Pyramid. I like the idea about igniting the light inside the room. When the light was on, all the beautiful subjects were cleared in front of us, which surprised us. I love it. Fortunately, at the end, we successfully got out of the room. We had a great time escaping the Hunters Lodge. We celebrated my daughter's 21st Birthday and had three in our party. Thank God we checked in on Yelp cause we really needed the third free clue. Super fun! I did the zombie escape in SF and glad I tried this one. We had a team building offsite, so there was a group of six. Nice set up, clean and fun. We didn't escape but the experience was great. The rooms all have fans which is really nice because it can get warm working so hard to solve the puzzles ! read more

The location in down Hayward is convenient for us and the groupon price was good. We had a 9:30 pm escape and when we got there, the front of the locale looked closed and there were young people playing on computers in the back. The escape room itself was well decorated but way way too difficult. I don't believe anyone could escape themselves - perhaps people who know the owner and have some hints? There were some excellent puzzles there, but a couple that were not well done and pretty much impossible to figure out. With some hints we figured our way out, but past the alotted time. I think they need to improve it to a 30% escape rate and have pictures up on the wall of those who have escaped. Until then I would not recommend this spot. read more

From a person who has now done 20 escape rooms, Lost Kingdom is on the top portion of the list. The things to look for in escape rooms are the design and the puzzles. They are both very well done. This was a very challenging escape room, mostly because the props were faulty or broken. The last puzzles had no explanations, and there was no way to know what to do, except guess or be lucky. The guy running it had to replace our blacklight flashlight batteries like 6 times, which took a lot of time. He had to follow us around a bit and adjust or fix some pieces of equipment when they stopped working or were faulty. It was very dirty: hair, dirt, and dust everywhere. A lot of puzzles had irrelevant additions, I guess to confuse you, but with 4 rooms to get through, it was unnecessary. Overall, skip this company, unless you're one of the first groups to use it when they switch it up. read more

This was my first experience with an escape room and unfortunately it was not a good one. These guys are so unprofessional. I assume that the whole idea is to set the mood and to lay out a scenario for how the escape room is going to work but the guy was so boring and unenthusiastic it did not really make me want to stay. on top of that when we first arrived and we were getting ready and we're getting our instructions for the escape room either the employees or the combination of employees and their friends were playing loud music and eating fast food right near the front and we were wondering what in the world was going on. the concept and the idea are good but the execution was terrible. I think this was our 14th or 15th escape room. Xcapade is located in the back of a gaming cafe. The puzzles are intuitive for the most part. However, the walkie talkies stopped working during the game so the host just awkwardly sat in the room with us while playing on his phone. At one point, the main door to the escape room (facing the gaming cafe) was also left open by the host during the game so it took away from the whole experience of "being locked in a room." read more

This was my 3 escape room and my least favorite. Too dark and not enough hints. Our group of six (by the way a smart group of six) found ourselves staring at the walls because there were not enough clues, but a lot of random stuff to look at. It's no wonder the pass rate is 4%!! Tao was not a good host. He would appear every once in a while, but you would hope that if all six people were staring at the walls he would offer to help. Fail us, put us in your 96% of groups who could not escape in 1 hour, but help us move along. 2 more people, 4 more people wouldn't have helped. We needed an active host that could give us useful clues. We didn't even make it to the last room. We left feeling defeated and frustrated. Note/: we didn't make it out of our last 2 escape rooms in the allotted time either, but we left pumped up and wanting more. And, in both cases the host allowed us to finish. For Egyptian and Indiana Jones fan like me, this is a must-go one! We reached there 10min earlier (seven people) and didn't wait long before the staff explained the rules, simple and straightforward. The environment is exceptionally good. Some of the clues were hidden in wall paintings with astounding graphic designing. Reminds me of the Mummy series and Tomb raider. Puzzles are challenging yet logical with some fancy high-tech tricks. We made it to the final room (I think?) but didn't get everything solved. After nearly 20 mins, he finally tells us basically we can ask another group if we can join or come back another time. Never tried to accommodate us for his online scheduling system making an error, we traveled an hour to get here. He pretty much suggested we get a refund. This was my second escape room, and I wasn't terribly impressed. It is oddly located in the back of our café/ antique store. The whole set up look pretty cheaply made. Props were old and worn down. Our group didn't even make it to the last room because the puzzles were a little too difficult and random. Twice the host had to come in and give us hints. This was our fourth escape room in the Bay Area. We bought a Groupon for four people, but what the Groupon doesn't make clear is that you have to share the room with other people. However the owner does explain that to you when you call to make a reservation, though I wish it had been more clear on the site when I bought the Groupon. Anyway, this escape room was very well made. It was the most difficult one we've ever done, and it shows since only 3 out of 135 groups have escaped so far. We were a minute away from escaping, and I felt that part of the problem was that even though the room is advertised on the website as 4-8 players, we had 10 people in our group. Although it might have been hard to do as 4 people, it was extremely difficult having 10 people because there was not enough stuff for people to do, so you ended up with people just standing around playing on their phone and being obstructive to the people who are trying to solve puzzles. It felt deceptive that what had been advertised originally to me as a 4 or 6 person Groupon, became a 8 person room with strangers when I called, then turned into 10 people when we actually arrived. Other than that, it was an intellectually challenging and thorough puzzle room that was obviously made well. FYI: the room is in the back of a very strange antique/wedding/food/event/LAN store... we thought we were in the wrong place. It made the whole business of it all seem even more sketch, but again, it's balanced by the fact that it is a great puzzle room. I would recommend that you try to buy out the entire room for a group of 6. I think that's the most ideal number of people you should have in this room. read more
