Horrible experience. I got a pedicure and while I was checking out , Illisa ( the nail tech) basically got called me scammer for showing the Groupon code I had purchased for this service. On the services options it was not clear which option was for the pedicure, so I bought the one that didn't specify it ( The manicure option was right under on the list). I ended up paying more than if I had bought the mani+pedi coupon from their services. If you don't want people to use Groupon then stop making these offers. No one is forcing you. Usually when I visit Chicago, I end up staying at the Renaissance Hotel at the corner of Wacker and State. I used to live in Chicago and did business in this building all the time so I knew this salon was tucked in behind when I needed my hair done for a recent dinner I was attending in town. First of all scheduling is super easy on line. Since I needed my hair done on a certain date and before a certain time, it was easy to see who would be able to accommodate me. Alicia did my blowout and my hair looked fabulous! Prices are competitive and I love that you never have to leave the building which is helpful in those cold winter months or even in the summer humidity if your event is in this stretch of buildings. If you aren't from Chicago, the address may confuse you as it's located sort of "under" or behind the building. You can enter through the Leo Burnett Building, or through the Renaissance hotel or walk in the pedestrian entrances off of Dearborn and Lake or State and Lake and find it in the Gallery of shops. It's clean, and what I like most of all is how friendly everyone is and what a great job they do. Worth a check out! read more

My hair was botched due to a technique/ application error of the enlightener color- a dye with bleach in it- they didn't apply this color from my root down to where my previously bleached hair was, so I had a very dark and obvious band sandwiched between hair that has been lightened. I've been to this salon a handful of times now and this was the worst outcome I've had. When the color was revealed, I told my stylist I needed it to be fixed ASAP. The stylist tried to convince me that a toner would be the solution but that it would darken my hair overall, which was not what I wanted. I came in the next day to get a color correction- this is what I would've been charged for if I had went to another salon and asked them to fix my hair. After 2 hours, it's discovered my stylist had not applied enough lightener to the band to fix it. In this time, two stylists who had never done my hair took the liberty to try and blame the outcome of my hair on me- the first said i was changing the formula too much (which since I'm the client, I'm not putting formulas together in the first place, but also the adjustments I asked for each visit were to correct the things I didn't like about the previous outcome), the second tried to explain to me that I waited too long to get my roots done & that caused the band- never mind the fact that there was no lightening product put on the band during the initial service, which my stylist admitted to making the mistake. The outcome of the 'color correction' is even worse than the original appointment. I sent a detailed message to the salon the following day asking for a refund, providing as much info as I could to give a full picture. At the end of the day, I left the salon looking like i had an uneven, reverse ombré. My hair is now severely compromised because of the banding that is just a couple inches from my scalp. The reply to my message was a call asking what I actually wanted- a refund or ANOTHER service. Why would I want another service when the last time I went in to get it fixed, it came out even uglier than the first time? The person on the phone asked several questions that were addressed in my lengthy message, showing me they didn't even care enough to read it all. They claimed the owner was on their way in to come fix my hair- interesting seeing as I was en route to my vacation which my stylist also knew about, and was mentioned in the messages, but also I was not aware of that at all- it felt like an attempt to placate me. After I said I wasn't comfortable getting my hair done there ever again, they said they needed to get permission from the owner to refund me. They called back shortly and applied the refund ($87.50, which will be a small small drop in the bucket to what I'll have to spend to fix what they royally screwed up). While they did refund the service (which I'm grateful for though I'm still out $100 between parking and tipping the stylist who screwed up my hair for their time), I'm appalled that anyone in that salon could see the photos I sent and not immediately apologize for the carnage their stylist created. No management called me to speak about my experience, just a cold 'we'll refund you' as if they didn't just completely ruin my hair. Had the owner taken the time to speak with me at all or show any compassion for the situation I'm now in for trusting a licensed hairstylist to know how to do their jobs, this review wouldn't exist. I would not recommend this place if it was the last standing salon in the world. You're better off box dying your hair than trusting these 'professionals' to do their job/ have the knowledge to fix when they make mistakes. You'll get blamed for your stylists shortcomings, and you'll be stuck with disgusting hair. First two pictures were from the initial apt where the band was created by the stylist, the last 3 are what they felt was acceptable to allow me to walk out of the salon with as a 'fix' to the botched appointment. read more

I went for a haircut and blow dry and booked an appointment online with David Perry, the lead artist and salon owner. Honestly, this was one of the best haircuts I've ever had and I've had many haircuts in my life! David customized every bit of my haircut based on my hair texture and type. He also thoughtfully made it more suited to my lifestyle (eg easy to maintain). He gave me loads of tips and tricks for my hair type, which I'm super excited to try out very soon. If you have fine hair, David should be your go to person because he's very knowledgeable and experienced in this department! Booking appointments online was quite easy. As a first time customer you also get a discount so be sure to call and ask them about it. The promotions may change over time. Besides the fantastic haircut, David was also a delight to talk to and very personable. The front desk staff were also very friendly and even walked me to the restroom since the route to it was a bit convoluted inside the building. Overall very warm vibe. Totally professional and yet super welcoming and friendly. Very neat and clean inside the salon, great smells all around, of course they use awesome Aveda products! Great value for money too. She is one of the younger stylists, so I noticed Senior staff were keeping an eye out to make sure things were going well. I put in a last minute request to have my hair cut at 5 pm and the dresser, Kris, was kind enough to take me on as her last client. I showed her only a few photos and she really cleaned me up! We skipped a hair wash as I had washed it only hours prior, so helped her save some time, and it turned out amazing!! I could tell she was a bit wiped from the day but I think we met in the middle and I walked out super happy with the cut I got and I hope she was happy that I was an easy customer. Had a Groupon for a balayage, cut, and style. And...I got what I paid for! Chelsea cut my hair really well but the balayage was pretty below average. The color wasn't exactly what I asked for and parts weren't blended, see pics. Oh and they charge $30 extra for toner...shouldn't it be included? Never decide to cheap out when it comes to your hair. Just got my hair cut and styled by Chelsea and had an amazing experience. Started with the front desk who was nothing but helpful and friendly. She was able to change my appointment to earlier, greeted me with a smile and a hello, offered me a beverage and hung up my jacket. My stylist was informative and asked questions in regards to my haircut and answered all of my questions as well. I could tell she loves her job and took her time to make sure my hair was perfect. This was my 3rd experience at XEX SALON. 1st with Chelsea (I believe) and next 2 times with Kristina Lollar. My first experience wasn't necessarily bad but it wasn't anything to brag about. I Loved My 2nd and 3rd time here with kristina. She is very attentive, communicative, friendly. I usually don't do much to my hair but when I do it simply entails trim or style. Let me preface this by saying I'm not rating for the services received since I did not actually receive the services they provide. I'm reviewing on behalf of my girlfriend and amazing the salon's accommodation and customer service. With that out of the way, here's a little background. On Saturday morning, I had a salon company arrange to do hair and makeup for my girlfriend in her hotel room. Long story short, they never showed up, even though they claimed they did. My girlfriend was able to call and do a walk-in appointment. Let me tell you, she looked absolutely stunning and they did a wonderful job on her makeup and hair. She ended up leaving her foundation at the salon, which I went and picked up the following day. The staff was so nice and gracious and I thanked them profusely for taking her as a walk-in on such short notice. I came here from out of town to get my hair and make up done for a wedding. Victoria did my hair and Kristina did my make up. Both of these women listened to exactly what I wanted. Victoria looked at a picture of what I wanted and tried her best to get close to it, while also making sure as she did it that I loved what she was doing. Kristina was the same way. Ugh, please avoid. I've had several bad haircuts in my lifetime and never written a review but this one truly irked me no end. I specifically asked for simple level trim and styled in beach waves. The guy insisted that we need to straighten it POKER-straight in order to ensure the cut is level-ed. Then he kept going shorter and shorter trying to get the same length across. When he couldn't, he threw in a bunch of layers. UGH. At this point, he'd straightened the f out of my hair where it's literally stabbing the back of my neck and couldn't get the beach waves. And then they tell me to "go home, put some water in and style it in waves". Seriously? What am I doing in the salon then? UNREAL. My hair also smells burnt because he ran through it with the straightener so many times. What a waste of time and money + having to wait months for the hair to grow. I went in yesterday for a textured hairstyle. I booked with Kristina. She was a very nice stylist and had great conversation. However, at the end of it all I was not satisfied with the end result. I felt as though I was overcharged. I know I paid for the products but my hair style did not wow me or leave me feeling confident after I left. I had to fix it. I should not have had to fix a style myself afterwards. It defeats the purpose of getting your hair done. I felt duped. I know I could have done better, if I just did it myself. I had a cut and balayage with Stacey it was truly an amazing experience! We started at 10AM (when they open) and Stacey was ready to go, very attentive and asked me questions about what was going on in my hair already and what I wanted the results for the visit to be. I'd recommend coming with some photos of your desired color, Stacey was super helpful and let me know what she thought was attainable and also made thoughtful suggestions in terms of how my cut should be, which was very helpful since I wasn't sure myself walking into it! The balayage process itself was done very well and her attention to detail was amazing! Super efficient too as we got everything (haircut and color) done within 3 hours! Stacey also toned my hair a little darker so that it would fade lighter with future washes and last longer, which was definitely appreciated! The cut itself was exactly what I was looking for as well. I've gotten nothing but compliments after my visit and am more than satisfied with my hair! Omg i love getting my hair done by Nelson! The first time he ever fixed my hair after someone else messed it up, i fell in love with the way he left my hair. He will leave your hair super soft! My first time at XEX Salon was back in May 2019, when I went in for a balayage, cut, and styling on my virgin hair. I had the pleasure of having Angelica as my stylist who did an outstanding job. From the moment I arrived she was so attentive, explained the process, and gave me advice. I received so many compliments and happily referred her to friends. My second time was just a week ago today and it was just as good as the first. Although, this time it felt less of a services and more of hang out, all while doing my hair. He rushed through shampoo and conditioner like a train was on fire and hardly spoke anything in that long one hour.
