I am visiting Chicago on business and stumbled upon this salon while getting Starbucks. I had a simple blow out- nothing fancy. Mark did a great job! He was friendly, kind, and very patient! (I have a lot of hair!) the receptionists were great as well. They got me in for an appointment within fifteen minutes. They are all very accommodating and have great customer service skills! Edit/update: After I wrote my previous review and addressed my experience. I was immediately contacted by the owner of the salon David. He asked for me to come in and get it fixed free of charge. Which is great bc I thought I would have to go somewhere else to get it fix and pay even more. I told him I would think about it and he was very friendly about it and said to call back whenever. My appointment was today (Feb. 4, 2019) I arrived and was greeted by Jessica right away. Jessica is the nicest and most professional stylist you'll ever meet. She addressed the situation and made me feel comfortable even though I felt like I was being very vague and all over the place with what I wanted fixed. She listened attentively. When I was with her she never made me feel awkward or nervous. She did a WHOLE service on me. Which I thought was amazing given the service was free. Jessica showed that she can tackle a problem without complaining and take accountability and is concerned about your wants and needs of your hair. She will do the absolute best to get you the hair you want in a healthy way. She definitely fixed my balayage the best she could and answered all my questions. I'm glad that I got to see her in her full protenial and that a second chance presented itself. So always address the issues on your hair and I'm sure they will do their best to fix it. I'm immensely thrilled that I will be returning to xex! I've come here 4 times in the past 4 years. So basically every year. My first time (2016) I got a balayage and I wish I could remember the stylist name. She did a great job on the balayage and cut my hair how I wanted. The 2nd time (2017) I was attended by Nelson. I had come in with destroyed hair from a previous haircut and he fixed it to excellence. 3rd time (May 2018) I was styled by Chris. He was such a lovely guy. I had come in for a whole haircut which included v shaped from the bottom , framing on the face and layers he only cut off my ends. I do understand that my hair was damaged from the ends. But I ended up just the same as how I walked in. The whole service seem rushed as well. I was there with my sister who was also getting a haircut and wasn't done yet and I realized that right away there was another client on his chair, I guess he had another appointment. So was trying to finished with me as quick as possible. 4th time was recently (Jan. 26, 2019) I had Jessica as my stylist. I didn't want to judge from my previous experience. Bc everyone is different. I've gone for a full balayage and a haircut. Jessica was nice and informative. However when I got home and got a better look at my hair I could tell there were some mistakes. Such as patchiness from the balayage. One side of my bangs had more color than the other. It wasn't even. She had said the color would melt on my hair how balayage does when you google it but I don't see it like that (judge for yourself). She had curled my hair so you couldn't really tell the mistakes of the color when I was at the salon. Also I had asked for layers and once again I did not get and I got a 5 min haircut instead where she only cut the ends of my hair even when we had both decided where my layers were going to start. I believe I only got framing around my face. I also believe the stylists rush bc they have a time limit. Given I had gotten full balayage before, this time it wasn't great. Also, I paid 262$ when she had said it was going to be less than 200$ given the service it wasn't worth 262$ a I think the quality of this salon is getting lower and lower. It's unfortunate that I won't be returning bc my first two experiences were great. read more

I've been coming to XEX since May of 2017 and I LOVE IT HERE! As a black woman who needs a chemical relaxer every few months, it's necessary for me to find someone who knows their stuff and boy do the folks at XEX know what they're doing!!! From my relaxer (s/o Ashley) to tape in extensions- I've tried various styles & never have received a service I was unhappy with. XEX has done my hair right before important events such as friends weddings or my grad school graduation (see pic), and I feel so lucky to have made this spot my "hair home." If I had an option to give a negative rating, I would give a -10. I had a haircut and style by Stacie Castro. I asked her to cut my hair so it hit my shoulder. However, she cut my hair two inches above my shoulder. I have very thick asian care. This haircut makes me look like an apple! An apple in my 30s! I am in financial services and actually have a Professional job. I can't imagine how I'm going to go to work looking like 10 yr old until my hair grows out. All the stylist had to do was the cut my hair. I did not ask for anything else. Simple straight cut! If you want a great angled bob cut, David is the go-to person. I received lots of compliments after I got my bob cut from him. If you want gorgeous highlights or color, Georgia is the go-to person. Even though I'm not used to her methods, the colors and the way they look always turn out great. Minus one star for the parking inconvenience though. They offer validated parking at 20 E Randolph for $16, but you have to walk a couple of blocks. The other option is to valet your car with the Renaissance hotel, but that's a bit expensive at $25 + tip. read more

I bought the Groupon like a lot of others did here at Xex and had the wonderful Chris Hansel cut and balayage my hair. First of all, not only is Chris hilarious and interesting, he is also talented with hair (and not just Caucasian hair - yes, there is a difference between ethnicities regarding hair types. Google it.)! I typically only have gotten my hair done in Korea (by Koreans) and have had horrible experiences at a number of other salons in downtown Chicago cutting and dying my thick, coarse, black hair. I pretty much was going to give up going anywhere in Chicago until Chris put all doubts to rest when he expertly cut, dyed, and styled my hair. I felt so glam and beautiful afterwards. I wanted to like this place I really did. I received a call from Charles asking if they can fix my hair, my hair is so damaged and fried and they also offered to do a "conditioning treatment". At first I went in and they only had me down for a conditioning treatment (I wouldn't of taken the time to go in just for that). I forgot who did my hair but it was a guy and extremely friendly. I sat in the chair and at this point he didn't even know I was coming in to fix my hair, he just thought I was a client. I processed to show him all the uneven bits on my hair and even just the color alone was so blah he said "yea, honestly you need a new fresh ombré". Mind you I JUST had it done a week earlier there by Nina. I said "I just got it done a week ago". He looked shocked and he looked even more shock when I told him it was at that salon! I showed both Nina and him a picture of what I wanted and neither of them achieved it. Maybe I've been lucky with really skilled stylists because they can get what I'm saying and make it come alive. I ended up going to Sally's and buying a toner for my hair which is what I should've done from the beginning before wasting all that money. To whoever blew my hair out. He didn't say one word to me while he was shampooing me and even on his chair until he asked how I parted my hair. He seemed annoyed and in a rush to get my out of his chair. My hair was still wet and at that point I didn't even care I just wanted to get out of there. Extra star for offering to fix my hair but I definitely won't be back. read more

UPDATE: This weekend my wedding party and I had our updos done at XEX. Everyone left happy and feeling beautiful. My half up half down style with accessory by Keara looked gorgeous and didn't budge all night long. I came back today to take my super long hair to a manageable long bob. It looks perfect. She really listens during the consultation and understands shape, drape, and proportion. Left feeling amazebombz. ORIGINAL POST: I got my hair cut by Keara here today. We had a great consultation and I felt understood. I love my haircut; it looks and feels great. The place itself is clean and well decorated--modern and colorful. I really did not want to give this one star review but I got the worst haircut of my adult life two days ago and I feel so strongly that I have to leave this review. I have been going to this place for over a year and it wasn't until my appointment with Gary did I have a haircut this bad. I brought a picture of the style I wanted and the cut I got was a lot shorter than it was supposed to be. Normally I can live with that. However the way Gary cut my bangs was atrocious! Not only are the side bangs way too short there is no framing to speak of! Just one chunk of bang at one single length and then a whole other length that doesn't connect. I knew something was potentially off when he only shampooed my hair and did not condition it. That had never happened before at any other Salon. That should have been a sign that this was not going to go well. The thing is he is a very nice person and we had a pleasant conversation. He just has no skills when it comes to hair! read more

Dropping my rating of this salon to a 2. In the past, I have had some good experiences with cuts and colors in the past... but a recent visit that had errors from miscommunication and rushing, and also some unneeded rudeness at the front desk, makes me not want to go here again. I recently went in for a cut and single process color with lead stylist Georgia. I had photos of what I wanted done to my hair. Now I'm not that knowledgeable of hair colors and treatments (always learning) so when I explained what I wanted done, I was told it may take a little longer and there was going to be some $15 extra charge for what had to be done. Most of my time getting my hair done was very relaxing. The time it took didn't seem too long and XEX makes you feel comfortable by offering drinks and you can listen to music on your phone, whatever you'd like. I've even worked on my laptop once there so that is a positive thing that they allow clients to try and get other things done while in the chair. When it came time to see the finished color, I was so shocked. My hair looked black and orange to me, or this weird mix of dark and very very light. I came in with medium brown hair so the lighter colors I knew would be different for me but it was just not what I asked for at all. I was told my hair color may just look different in different lighting... No. It needed toner. And as the place was closing soon, maybe things were in a rush to get me out which isn't cool because I basically walked out with not finished hair. A stylist friend of mine and many friends who saw my hair after all said the same thing: wtf. So I go to the register to pay for my hair and was told it was about $150 more than I originally thought it would be because I apparently got balayge. Now if I had known this would have cost so much or knew that was what was being done, I definitely wouldn't have asked for it or gone a different route... the receptionist wasn't nice or helpful at all with the situation, just kept repeating prices to me and finally we worked out the original price I was told the service would be. I came in the next day for a toner to fix the hair and that was done complimentary... but I left knowing I'd be looking for a new salon regardless. read more

XEX is A friendly, comfortable place with quality service. If someone told me a few years ago I'd be reviewing a hair salon ... but nonetheless, life moves in odd ways and here I am. What you should know about my perspective on this place: Prior to getting my haircut here for the first time in April '05, I was strictly a Hair Cuttery and Super Cuts guy. For years. What that means is: - I have no other fancy-pants salon experience to draw upon for comparison - I was coming from a situation where clearly anything would have been a dramatic step up - I was also apprehensive about stepping into the grown-up haircut world and the people at XEX have been gentle with me, ultimately converting me into a regular customer. You should also know that I work in this building, so I kind of arrived by default at first. So location earned them trial, but the experience has earned them my monthly haircut for the past 18+ months. More background This salon was something else before David and Gary came in to turn it around. And they have changed everything - the look, some of the folks working there, and ultimately the attitude. They are small business entrepreneurs who care and work their asses off trying to deliver good service. By all means ask more experienced hair salon critics for better/different perspective, but if you're in this area of the city and looking for a place, give them a shot. read more

I started seeing Victoria for cut and color about two years ago because I mistakenly thought Nina didn't work there anymore. Nina was great so I was scared to see someone else but Victoria is just as amazing. In my 15+ years of coloring, I've never had someone as consistently great as Victoria. She has literally given me a perfect cut and color EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I've referred a few people (including my boyfriend) to her and they all say the same thing. She is so thorough yet quick. I used to spend 5+ hours getting a cut and color because of the length and texture of my hair but Victoria has me out in less than 2.5 hours for both. When I get a cut, she's able to wash, cut, dry, and style in less than 45 minutes. It's crazy because she's SO fast yet my hair looks perfect. The cherry on top is how reasonable XEX's prices are, especially compared to the area. They're a total gem and I'm so glad I found them!!! read more

I thought this place was very nice! 1. dont' call for directions from this place.. literally walked around in circles before i realized that i was circling the correct building. 2. Gary was awesome! he really listened to what i wanted (i'm very picky about how my hair is cut.. it's surprising how few people can actually cut my hair with my very specific directions.) I have been to this place for the past few years, and so far my experience has been good. For the price they charge, you get approximately what you pay for. However, my last visit was terrible. This time, I booked with a new hairstylist Nelson Segarra (assuming he/him/his) that matched the availability of my schedule. The hairstyle I was looking for could not have been described by a single picture, so I brought several pictures of a few different models, each of which illustrated an aspect of the hairstyle I wanted. As I showed him the pictures, I explained that one picture was for the approximate length I wanted, another for the color, and a possible few changes that I wanted. Then, his first reply to that was that these pictures didn't look like me and I should look for other pictures. I tried to clarify that I was not looking to look exactly like the pictures, but they were meant to illustrate aspects of the hair I wanted and I could explain in more detail. He then told me that I must have been "unconsciously" wanting to look like the model when I was searching for the pictures (yes, he DID say that), and he insisted that he cannot do my hair like I described. Then, he offered to give me a "professional advice" (exactly as he stated), which is to look for the pictures of models from the same country as mine. (It was already insulting enough and by no means I cared to tell him that some of the pictures were of a model with the same origin as mine.) He then connected nationality to the shape of the face, and he told me that he himself searches for "latino square face hair" to decide his own hairstyle. Everything he said sounded very unprofessional to me. First, I did not agree that nationality had anything to do with the hairstyle you should look for. The shape of the face would, but I still do not agree that you cannot get inspirations from the pictures of models with different nationality/ethnicity/shape/whatsoever. Second, I think a hairstylist should be capable of imagining what a particular hairstyle would look like on a different person and be able to communicate it and propose an alternative, if necessary, instead of dismissing a customer's communication effort and dogmatically telling them what he is doing for himself. Third, I was surprised that, as a stylist, he even needs a picture of a hairstyle on the same face type as his in order to decide his own hair. One thing I was lucky about is that this all happened in the initial consultation, so I did not have to waste my money on someone who has all the wrong ideas about hairstyle, face, nationality, and ethnicity. read more

One year after moving to Chicago, I think I've finally found my hair salon! It was basically love at first sight - as in, I walked past it thinking it was an art gallery/store and thought "I should stop in after my haircut"...then realized it was the salon! So, very nice atmosphere: check. Being offered a glass of wine upon arrival: double check. Keara took excellent care of me - she listened to what I wanted and offered advice without being pushy, and did an amazing job with my hair. I absolutely love it! It's the kind of haircut that made me wish I had a hot date afterwards to show it off. I also love that they use Aveda products - not something I'd normally splurge on, but it's nice to be spoiled with them every once in a while :) I'll be going here for my hair from now on. I really do love this place! And I wish I could just steal John because he is such an amazing stylist! He has such a warm, friendly spirit. He listens to you, and makes honest suggestions. Very gentle and I like it when someone takes their time doing my hair (even if they have a full day of appointments). I'd also like to point out that he is extremely professional--and you won't be disappointed! The owner is also very polite and professional as well. I have natural hair, and it can be very challenging finding the right person to do it. I am happy because I found someone who can really handle my hair the proper way. It's such a blessing to be able to to sit in the chair and relax! The place is always clean, very professional, and I love the fact that they offer you a beverage ( I like being pampered). Would you like a glass of wine? MIND IF I DO! I love that they use top of the line products in your hair. I adore that Moroccan line and Aveda. My only complaint would be that the prices on line are different from when you get there in person. Not sure why that is...but I think that should be outlined better. I was expecting to pay something completely different from what was outlined on line (way more expensive). Also, the guy that works as a receptionist is rude. I can't seem to find an alliance to a hair stylist for some reason - not that I haven't had good experiences, I just haven't set myself on one in recent times. So I came to XEX because of close proximity to my office and let them pick someone for me. Kristina was wonderful - the right amount of letting me zone out and letting me chat her ear off. She did a great job on my super long blah hair - I let her know I would like some length off and some shape and she gave me exactly that. My hair came out perfect and I'm loving my day two hair. TLDR: Don't go see Chris at XEX. I cannot begin to explain the many reasons you should not go to Chris at XEX Hair Gallery. To start, this review does not reflect the entire salon, as I am sure there are some talented artists there. However, Chris is not one of those artists. Additionally, it was not just the lack of skill that Chris had that upsets me but his lack of professionalism throughout the entire appointment. This was my first and last time ever visiting Chris at XEX. The day of my appointment, I was scheduled for a full highlight, cut and style. I told Chris that I wanted "a few lighter highlights in my hair for the summer," and that I had "four to five grey hairs that I wanted covered on my roots, but I did not want my roots to be too dark." Chris responded to my request with "oh like a balayage!" and I said "yes! I LOVE my highlights, and I do NOT want to lose them" -- At the start of this appointment my hair was a light brown, it is naturally light brown, and I had various highlights of light brown, and blonde in my hair. I just wanted a few more highlights added, and my grays covered. I told Chris "I do not want a huge contrast between my roots and my ends." I went into SO many details with Chris, and he repeated back to me, and seemed to understand. As we began Chris told me how he comes to work hungover, after taking "shots" and "drinking wine." He did not say he was hungover that day, but he told me "it happens." Additionally, Chris did not know anything about me, as this was my first visit, which is totally understandable. However at one point this was our conversation. Chris "What are you doing this weekend?" Me: "Running a 10K." Chris "I only run when I am running from the cops." Me "Well why are you running from the cops?" Chris "Well you know CPD, they chase anyone." At that point I began to get uncomfortable, as many of my family members are CPD. Chris then went on to tell me that he believes if a cop has a body camera, or a car camera and it "goes out" and a shooting occurs that cop should "instantly get the death penalty or first degree murder, no questions asked." Again, I never prompted him for this information. At one point I was watching Chris apply the "highlights" to the ends of my hair, and felt it looked off. So I STOPPED him, and asked him "are you SURE you are not getting rid of my highlights?" And he responded "stop being so nervous, you're going to look great!" I told him again "I just want a little lightness for the summer nothing crazy" and he continued on. Fast forward to the end of my appointment, and I was shocked. When Chris revealed my hair (please see attached photos) I could not believe what he had done. He looks to have bleached all of my hair from the ears down, and then darkened my roots two to three colors darker than my natural color. Also, almost funny, he MISSED two of my grey hairs. My initial reaction was shock, and Chris could tell I did not like it. He asked, "what don't you like?" And I said "well the color is not blended well, and its really light." TO WHICH CHRIS RESPONDED "Well, I disagree." ...... As someone who has worked customer service for a long time, it does not matter your opinion, or you "disagreeing." This is about making the customer happy. To be fair, Chris did offer to "add some toner" but at that point I had no time, and did not want Chris touching my hair. After I said no to the toner, Chris WALKED AWAY and LEFT ME in his chair. HE NEVER CAME BACK. He literally just walked away shaking his head. I watched him, and waited for a few minutes thinking he would come back, and he never did. So eventually I got myself up, and walked to the front of the salon. The ONLY good part to my review is the front desk team, they were amazing. Charles at the front desk knew immediately I wasn't happy and when he asked me if I liked it, I started crying. I have NEVER cried before in a salon. He did not charge me, but I already was not planning on paying, there was no way I would pay for this terrible hair job. He also offered to fix it, but again I was tight on time. To be honest I was most upset not about how ugly the color was, but how terrible the job was. There was patchy spots ALL throughout my hair, and spots where Chris had applied the hair dye terribly. This was more than just someone getting a hair color and "not liking it," it was a terrible job. The next day I went and got my hair fixed and it cost me more than $400 dollars. The woman who fixed it was SHOCKED at the condition of my hair. I take excellent care of my hair, and wear it naturally curly all the time, and do not apply heat normally, not even a hair dryer. My hair IS STILL (a week later) so FRIED after what Chris did that my hair WILL NOT naturally curl. I have done a deep conditioner treatment multiple times, and have been taking even better care of my hair and I have completely lost all of my natural curls. It was a very nice and clean salon that I found on Groupon. I'm coming to a realization that services booked on Groupon tend to not be done to the best of their ability. I don't want to think that but I'm really starting to think that in general if you buy a Groupon for a service for anything, you are not going to get a job well done. My stylist was was very friendly and accommodating. However, I showed a picture of the balayage I wanted and didn't get anything even close. I totally understand that getting the exact look can be difficult for various reasons but my hair color doesn't even look like a balayage. It's basically just one color that looks like highlights. I'm very underwhelmed by it and can't go back to get it fixed because I have to wait a few weeks and by that time I will have to pay for the service again. With all the add ons- toner, olaplex, covering a few grays- it ended up being a really expensive service for something I don't even love. Pretty bummed about it as this was the first time I got my hair colored like this and was really excited for something great. I've been coming to XEX since 2009. I have very long, thick and curly hair. I have never had any issues and never had a color I didn't love! This is the only place that I will allow to touch my curly hair. I've sent many friends to XEX. The staff is very polite and professional. The salon is always super clean. Great atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable, including their products for sale. They even have a Barber! It's a one stop shop for all your hair needs and you can get your nails done too.
