Worse- Chris did not even admit he had made a mistake and said it looked fine. They did not charge her for the cut and offered for her to come back to have it fixed, but the damage was done. She had to go to a different salon to have it fixed and she paid $400!!!! Seriously avoid this salon at all cost. I've been to this place a couple times. I'd say this was probably the best one of all. Chris was my guy and he did an awesome job. Gave me exactly what I wanted. Requested change of highlight color and long layers. This place is small but maximizes the space and also has an equal amount of gentleman as women working for them. Skills are great on both ends. DO NOT COME HERE. It is cheaper than the other salons for a reason--the stylists are unprofessional and bad at what they do. If you absolutely need to go to this salon, DO NOT let Chris touch your hair. I came to this salon in the spring to get some light gray/silverish tones in my dark brown hair. I left over 5 hours later with banana-yellow hair. Even though I had asked for just partial coloring, Chris bleached every single strand of hair on my head and then, after 4 hours, passively told me that the gray color wasn't going to set in. He then tried to blame it on me, telling me that the procedure I wanted was too complicated to do in one day (something he had totally failed to mention when I asked him if he knew how to do it). I was appalled when I read a review from somebody who had had the EXACT same experience with Chris. This was without a doubt the worst salon/ service industry experience I have EVEr had in my life. I ended up having to spend $250 getting my hair fixed, and my hair still looks dead and dry from whatever Chris did to it. read more

I had the worst experience today. I also don't have very high standards. I came in for a trim and she cut off four inches. I've spent so much time in trying to grow out my hair. I just wanted a straight cut and she also gave me face trimming. Her response was well it will grow back. She also decided to curl my hair after and well let's just say I'm not sure if they were curls or waves or what. She rushed through it. Also, I have very thin hair so it doesn't take long to cut my hair. Overall I am very upset. Also disappointed because it is less than a mile from my apartment so I was excited about the convenient location. Let's just say I am not going back. I wish I could go back in time. I went for a no chip manicure a month and a half ago with Ilisa. She did a great job by making a thin layer and taking care of my cuticles. I still have the polish on it has not chipped or started to bubble up. Usually by the second week the polish starts to bubble and water starts to get between the polish and nail. Angelica is an actual angel who fixed my confused blob of bad haircut and questionable 'no poo techniques. She was super calming and took her time but clearly knew what was what and fixed it in under half an hour. She actually listened to what I wanted, used her excellent judgement and rock solid technique and it looked fantastic. She encouraged me to see if I was ok with what she was doing as she was doing it, which was refreshing change from the "don't worry, you're going to love it and I'm kind of on a roll here" experience at other salons. Unfortunate is the best way to describe my experience with XEX. I've been here once before for a color/blow out with I believe her name was Jessica (a Caucasian stylist --why this is important will be clear in a moment). My second experience never happened because I got a call to say the guy was out sick. Ok, it's cold and flu season, got it. Recently (today) made an appointment online through their online booking system which I really appreciate them having. I show up 10 minutes before my appointment with TJ and after a few minutes i'm told by the manager that TJ doesn't do ethnic hair, only regular (yes those words were used) hair which was then corrected to only Caucasian hair texture and John is the only stylist in the place who can do ethnic hair. All of this before even looking at my texture or anything. I wanted to speak with TJ because I couldn't fathom what I was hearing, I wasn't getting a traditionally ethnic style (re: braids, twists, natural hair care, etc) or anything, but a simple blow out and flat iron and needed to see this senior stylist who couldn't do that. TJ comes out and sure enough those were his words " I haven't done ethnic hair in 12 years" I believe TJ is listed on their website as being a style director, really?!! Lovely. I emailed XEX asking for a stylist who would take the time to look at my hair and give me a cut that I loved. I have thick, dry, multi-textured hair that I find really difficult, and most of the stylists I've tried have emphasized its volume even when I ask them to thin it out. Kristina listened to what I wanted and gave me an incredibly manageable and adorable haircut. She was also sensitive to me not feeling super chatty which I really appreciated, because I was able to just chill and zone out after working all day. I just bought a Groupon and booked an appointment online - this is a pre-review just to give anyone buying the Groupon a heads-up that, contrary to what it explicitly says in the deal description, not all stylists at this salon accept Groupons. I didn't want a specific stylist and I had chosen the appointment based on the timeslot, and happened to be assigned to David. Right after booking online, they called me to confirm the appointment and ask whether I had been there before, which was nice. When I told them I had bought a Groupon they told me that David actually doesn't do Groupons. I was totally thrown by the reviews of this place! My hair is pretty simple to cut. It's long and straight and all I wanted was a few inches off and more layers. The girl that cut my hair, Sheena, finished a shampoo, cut, style in less than 25 minutes. I would not be bothered by this, had it been done with care and precision. However, the cut seemed really disorderly. She did not even separate my hair into sections before grabbing random pieces and cutting them. Even the blow-dry was was a disappointment. After I left the salon, I noticed some pieces of hair which were still damp. Instead of having a beautiful shape and style, it looked like I ran out of time to style my hair. It was clear that there was very little effort put into my cut - a big disappointment considering it was $55. I have had student salons where I have come away more satisfied! It still puzzles my mind that she rushed the hair cut so much, considering there was only one other client in the salon at the time. They book their appointments an hour apart, so the girl just sat around and talked after she finished with my hair. This girl also cut my friend's hair after mine (against my advice). She also very disappointed. Sheena did not even wash her hair before cutting, giving the excuse that it seemed pretty clean. After cutting her layers, she asked my friend to check them and it was obvious that they were grossly uneven. This handiwork also cost $55. Overall, this place was a huge disappointment for us. I made an appointment here because a friend who works in the building loves it. Her hair looks great, and while I didn't request her same colorist, I figured it wouldn't be a problem because of the rest of the amazing reviews here. Unfortunately, I did not have the best experience. My colorist was upset from the moment I came in- I think the person before me didn't show up. She brought me a glass of wine, and I explained that I wanted to go blonde, but I wanted it to look natural. Since I had never been blonde before, I was very nervous. She nodded, then told me she thought I should get partial highlights. When I said that really wasn't what I wanted, she said that she only had time for partial highlights, and they'd look fine. Then she asked if I wanted golden or platinum. I was a little in shock, but I managed to say, "I don't really know... What would look best with my coloring?" She said golden, and walked off to get the color. This is where I should have said something because I felt uncomfortable, but I didn't. My fault. She came back and started putting foils in my hair. About 20 minutes later, I had blonde streaks in my auburn hair. Not really what I was going for. She told me that this was the most natural way to go blonde. Again, I should have said something or gotten someone else at the salon to fix it. But for a few minutes, I really thought that it wasn't that bad. And really, it wasn't. I got a few compliments afterward. But as I was examining my hair later that night, I realized that some of the color had bled onto my brunette. While most people probably wouldn't notice, it drove me nuts. All of my friends encouraged me to come back here for her to fix it, but I really didn't want to chance it again. read more

I originally heard about XEX through Groupon, did my research on John their Lead Stylist for African American hair and thought I would give them a try after going to Maxine's (which I loved, but didn't love their prices). He has colored my hair a total of three times. Each time I have given a photo of previous hair colors and he never seemed to get it quite right, but it was good enough so I just lived with it. However after this last time I will NEVER be going back to XEX Salon. I came in because I was in my best friends wedding which was in two days and needed to have my highlights touched up. I specifically gave him a photo of a previous hair color I had done a few years back and requested that he keep the lightness of my hair as a bold highlight and take the rest a little darker since it's Fall, we could go for a warmer look. By the time he was done there was not a hint of the blond that I came in with, there actually aren't even any noticeable highlights and to top it off I am a Kardashian brown that I NEVER requested!!!! I was livid because as an African American, once my hair has been taken this dark, I practically have to ruin it to get it back to blond again. He was so nonchalant about his work, and didn't even apologize after I showed him the photo again and to top it off they still had the nerve to charge me a portion of the services. Needless to say you clearly get what you pay for and I will be going back to Maxine's where the stylist are top notch and can take direction from a photo. read more

I had an 11:00 appointment and my stylist did not know that he had an appointment and started on his regular who just walked in. When the receptionist told him, he thankfully stopped and fit me in. I have thick thick THICK hair and I love it. I understand it is really hard to maintain but all the girls love my long and thick hair. I wanted a drastic change and wanted inches off of my hair. I said that I didn't do much to it, I love shower, towel it and then let it air dry. I ended up with shorter hair than I wanted (I said I wanted 2 inches below the shoulder) and ended up with it shoulder length. I don't care, my hair grows out fast, length is not a problem. The major problem is when he thinned out my hair. Every stylist thins out my hair and I don't really like it. I even mentioned that I didn't want it too thin, but it fell on deaf ears. I said that I didn't really like layers and liked having long layers. I ended up with layers started at the top of my ears, down to my shoulders- a good 4 inches of LAYERS!!! My hair (which I am used to having thick hair) is now thin and stringy with no life despite all the layers. Hair will grow back not a problem, but when you thin out over half of my hair, I get upset. My hair in a ponytail is a disgrace for girls with thick hair. I went in asking for a shorter haircut, easy to take care of- no blowdrying or styling, just air dry and go, with life and bouncy-ness in it. I wanted a change. I ended up short hair, super thin, with so many layers it has to be blown out daily otherwise i end up it sticking out all over, and once I finally tame it, it lays flat without life with the bottom so thinned out. I went to another salon a week later to have them fix it. The stylist stated that my hair was 1) longer on one side than the other, 2) WAY TOO THINNED OUT with one side more thinned out than the other, and 3) too many layers which were uneven. I would like my money back included the money I paid for someone else to fix my hair! read more

I went this place to try Ombre and Jessica was my stylist. She actually did pretty good job, my hair was looking so natural even tho it doesnt look like the hair color in the picture I showed her. If you want more natural style I think Jessica is your person but if you want eye catching colors, she is not the person you are looking for. Another thing I didnt like is the attitude of employees. I Went in today for my groupon and totally got denied. As the lady was putting highlights in my hair she asked me have I been here before and I said yes maybe a little less or over a year. Then she told me my Groupon wasn't accepted. She began to wash the highlights out my hair and said she can't do anything. I'm really upset. THEE WORST! (I should note, I am black with natural hair) I purchased a Groupon for this place because I had heard good things. I called shortly after my Groupon purchase and was told that the stylists whom would accept the Groupon had not started yet. Um, what? If I wanted to pay an amateur to play in my hair, I could have booked an appointment at the Paul Mitchell School for half the price. My plan was to wait to use my Groupon shortly before it expired. In my mind, this was giving the new-bees some experience. That didn't work out for me. The color: I received partial highlights. Highlights they are not, the color did not take to my hair very well. Sigh. The wash: The sylist did a really good job at washing my "hair" but unfortunately one must wash the scalp as well. It seemed like she was scared to really get my hair clean. Sigh again. The blow dry: Again, my hair was dried but when I reached up to touch my head -- my roots and scalp were still wet. Hmm... The flat ironing: I know heat is not good for my hair but I need heat to straighten out my mane. I thought about asking her to pump up the heat but by this time I had already resigned to the fact that I was going to go home and re-do my hair. Once she was done, my roots were puffy and there was NO shine to the shaft of my hair. Sigh... When all was said and done, I looked in the mirror and looked a hot mess. I was so embarrassed as I walked out of the salon that I ducked into the Wow Bao bathroom to pull my hair back into the same ponytail I walked into XEX sporting. Positives before negatives... Amanda was my hairdresser, and TJ was her supervisor. I went in yesterday for a model haircut which was advertised through salonapprentice.com. I have been using this website for haircuts in Chicago for 3 years now, and it's never led me astray. Also, this is an AVEDA salon, which I have previous experience with, so I am aware of their styles and techniques. TJ was very knowledgeable, polite, and cool. He had many ideas for how my hair should look, even though he kept referring to my previous haircut as "whatever is going on here". My appointment was at 6, and we didn't finish until 7:40. I had somewhere to be; however, it should have taken longer, but they were really on-point with trying to get me out on time. It is my bad that I had to leave....but i've never had a near 2 hour haircut unless it involves cut and color. But c'mon...learn to work under pressure! Amanda was sweet; yet her nerves weren't making things any easier. I said that I don't mind what they do with the front-they could be as creative as possible. Asymmetrical bangs, choppy layers...whatever. AS LONG AS I could keep my length in the back. My hair was just below my shoulder blades (and I am aware that I said cut off 2 inches for split ends). No! They cut it just at my shoulders. That's not two inches. That's like 6 maybe 7 inches. WTF!? Also, the bangs look good, yeah, but there is no dimension to the front of my face and cheekbones now. They cut everything super straight. Hate it. Also, the secretary at the front desk was very rude. He had his head shoved up his ass thinking he has an amazing job. Didn't say hello when I had acknowledged him, didn't notify my stylist that I was in the salon, didn't say goodbye when I said thank you. read more

I have been to this salon on 4 total occasions: 1. Received bleach and color - after washing once all the color fell out. 2. Went back to have it fixed a day or two later, left moderately happy. 3. Came back after a couple of months to have the roots touched up and color refreshed and left with an unsaved bleach job and BURNS on my scalp. Weepy, painful burns. Spoke with the manager who assured me the next time they would put me with another stylist, apologized and gave me a giftcard. Note however, he kept saying I'd had an "allergic reaction" which is just simply not true. Same products were used each time. Now I know why he acted like the burns were no big deal because: 4. Returned to try and use the giftcard (which ended up I actually forgetting at home) and ended up with VERY uneven bleach, none of the color I asked for, and MORE BURNS. Painful, weepy, should have never happened because they already KNEW someone had burned me at the salon, BURNS. Do not go to this salon. They are not competent hair stylists, and the management doesn't seem to think that chemical burns on clients are something that should never happen. They basically treated it like "well that can happen" which could not be further from the truth. NEVER AGAIN. read more

So disappointed. Spent $160 for an all over color and a trim that took 5 minutes. Was originally quoted $120 on the phone, which was fine, but when I went to go pay the girl at the front, she states that since the stylist had to "pull the color through", it would be more... Okay, sure whatever. She slapped the color on and left, not really sure what pulling the color through entails?? When I questioned it, the girl at the front rolled her eyes and started getting snotty. The stylist I had was just okay, so I don't really think she should charge $67 for a trim. She literally spent 5 minutes cutting off a quarter inch of hair and 10 minutes blow drying. Didn't style my hair or anything and my hair looked extremely flat. The allover color she did for me was also super uneven. I wanted to go back the following day, but they were closed for a week after my appointment to replace their furnace. At that point, I decided I was done with them. This place is kind of a rip off. (Probably why they are constantly offering groupons and coupons) Here's a thought: lower your prices a bit, and you might be worth it. read more

Edit: changed my review to two stars because now that I'm home, Im not seeing really ANY color in the back. I feel like I might as well have just flushed my money away because now I'll either be suck with something that looks exactly the same as when I went in, or spend MORE money going somewhere else to get what I actually asked for. I went here because I found the groupon and it was right across from where I work. I saw Regina and it was okay. Regina is super nice and good at explaining things. However while my hair looks good, it's really not what I asked for at all. I asked for an balayage (showed the picture below) which was what my Groupon was for and what I got was low lights at best. If I had been paying more than $70 or whatever the groupon cost was, I would have been very upset. She also used the thinning shears on my hair and didn't ask (I would have said no). I was surprised she used them because having naturally curly hair, Ive always been told (an experienced) that thinning shears aren't a good idea. She also back combed my hair while doing the highlights. Maybe that's just her personal style, but I've never had a hair stylist do that and I never do it to myself because of how long it takes to brush out and how damaging it is. All in all I do like my hair color, it's just not what I asked for and also not what I paid for with the groupon. Maybe she didn't want to do the full balayage because I did have a groupon. She also told me that balayage is like highlights just less intense, which I don't agree with. From what I've seen balayage is like a softer ombré, not highlight. I'll have to see how my hair looks curly because she did blow dry it, but to be honest I'm a little scared in how it will turn out. read more

If you are looking for an amazing team of experienced stylists, a great location and a beautiful salon, then XEX is a must! The salon is absolutely gorgeous inside--a fusion of both art gallery and salon--filled with bright colors and showcased glass. I would definitely consider myself hair-obsessed(kindof a trademark for me) and am incredibly picky about who I let cut/color my hair, so finding a stylist who listens to my needs as well as advises me about what would look good is a must. Sheena is awesome! After my old stylist moved away, a friend recommended I come see her and I'm so glad I did!! Her cuts are great and I can go a few extra weeks without needing a trim since my cut grows out evenly. Sheena is super friendly and attentive and everyone at the salon is nice and not snobby or pushy at all, making you feel really comfortable and amongst friends. Everyone who works at XEX is very friendly, especially Shada, she is amazing - she went out of her way to make sure I was able to get in for an appointment. The last few times I've gotten a full highlight with Stacey, she is great! She does exactly what I've wanted and she has such attention to detail! My hair always looks amazing after she's done! Finally I found a good salon near where I work! ...XEX is a great salon and I liked Gary. They serve you beer/wine/whatever while you wait... but the question is, how is the hair!! I've been going here continuously since they opened (4 or 5 years now?).. Gary does a great job with my hair. I am one of those guys who is willing to try new things but every other stylist I've been to never really does anything different and my hair never changed... Finally my hair is different, and I really like it! He's Italian and obviously up on the latest trends... (he frequently goes back to Italy and cuts hair there too?) I've missed Gary once or twice and TJ is great too! It's a salon but they also sell a bunch of Italian art and have a huge hair product selection. Men's haircuts are ~$38ish. Their web site has daily web only offers on it, and they have one of those cards where if you get 8 haircuts there you get one free. Definitely would recommend this place! read more

I came in today and received a great cut from KEARA. It ended up exactly how I wanted it to look. The only ISSUE (and reasoning behind my Yelp update) is that XEX needs to make sure they differentiate KEARA from KARA MARIE. Kara Marie was the stylist I intended to have, but Keara showed up instead. Thankfully she did a GREAT job! - I left EXTREMELY HAPPY! I would recommend when someone calls and asks for Kara that XEX (Charles) clarifies KARA MARIE or KEARA. Otherwise thanks again for great hair! read more

I stopped into XEX for a cut because it's near my office to give it a try and ended up sticking with it for the last three years. Gary is an excellent stylist; he's not afraid to give you his opinion and is great at recommending a look that suits you well. When I went for the first time I'd had the same cut for years and was looking for something unique and classy (not easy when you have curly hair) and he gave me the perfect change I was looking for. I'm also hesitant to trust anybody with my curly hair, because most people don't know what they're doing, but this man certainly does!! A cut isn't cheap there, but like I said, it's worth it, and you can't find a great cut for much cheaper in Chicago. After tip it ends up being $70. They have punchcards that get you a free cut (or color) every six visits which definitely helps. I would recommend giving it a try (check Groupon.com for half off) and see if it works out as well for you as it did for me! There is always some kind of discount out there for new clients, so get on the internet and look around (check their site too). read more

I don't have any experience with the styling services at XEX. However, my husband recently bought some Aveda shampoo and conditioner there, and when he showed me the receipt my eyes just about popped out of my head. It was more than $100! When he tried to return the shampoo and conditioner, he was told that XEX would not accept them back since the bottles were not sealed (which is the way they are sold). The lack of a seal is obviously a design flaw on Aveda's part. Beyond that, they never told my husband that his purchase would not be returnable, when they sold it to him. There is also nothing about this "no return" policy on his receipt. Update to David's response: Yes, I was told about the toner at the start of the service - my issue is that it was not mentioned anywhere in the groupon. And since I had already paid for the groupon, I was not left with any choice but to pay the additional amount for toner. First of - the service was great! Louis did my haircut and Balayage and it was amazing I came here through a Groupon which included full balayage treatement with haircut and styling. While they honored the groupon, they charged me additional $29 for the toner - this was not mentioned anywhere in the groupon. Seems like a convenient way to get customers in and then charge additional money since they have no other option now but to pay. read more

I was really excited to try XEX since it got such great reviews and is very close to my office. Unfortunately the experience was not a good one. Right off the bat, I was offered a wine upon entering and never got it. I wasn't too upset though since I knew a good haircut experience could make it all better. Didn't happen. I had been growing my hair out for a wedding so I was really excited to go really short. So after my wash the stylist asked what I wanted and he started the dreaded "negotiation" that I've unfortunately experienced before. I told him what a didn't want - short layers, a helmet or bangs. Then I told him I wanted short. He seemed to think I needed to go longer than I currently had. I said "no, I want it shorter." He explained that my hair was too thick. I said "no, I've done this before". He asked why I wanted it short and I explained that I like the look and the feel. Then he said if we went short, it would look like a helmet. At that point, i was just so frustrated and pretty sure that if I forced him to try and give me what I wanted, it wouldn't turn out well. So I let him have his way. I ended up with an only slightly shorter haircut with more layers at the bottom. It actually feels much lighter which is great and is more fun to play with. Also great. However, nobody can even tell I got my haircut and it just wasn't what I wanted. So now I'm on the hunt again for someone that can give me the haircut I actually want. Overall, I was very disappointed and won't be back. I really hate it when I know what I want and stylists won't give it to me! Frustration. read more

I was fortunate enough to work with David on a last minute hair cut appointment I set up 45 minutes before walking into XEX Salon. Luckily, they were kind enough to squeeze me in. I had found this salon on the Aveda website. I was looking for a collar bone length haircut and David advised me that we would cut my hair a little longer than that because we could always cut off hair if it was longer than I expected, but if it was cut too short, there would be no way of going back. I had never had a stylist tell me that before and I respected his honesty. David was extremely personable. Right away I felt comfortable with him. I trusted his judgement in a matter of a few minutes and knew right away he was a professional! We cut off 8 inches of my hair and the final result was even better than I expected. David's recommendation was better than what I thought I wanted. It takes a talented person to know that right away without having worked on them before. I was a new client so I received 30% off which made the experience even sweeter. I am super happy with my new look! I would recommend David to any of my friends/family/colleagues. For those contemplating on booking services here, don't judge a salon solely on the Yelp reviews. When it comes to beauty, everyone has a completely different opinion/experience. read more
