Ouff, I really wanted to like this place but it really was not it for me. Let's start off with the fact that this hot pot spot has been opened for over ten years in Markham, but yet this was my first (and unfortunately last) time I visited. Another case of, don't believe everything you see on social media, because it was getting hyped by a lot of foodies online. I came with a party of 12 adults and one baby and we were split into two tables - not a problem. Where it started getting weird was our server that kept rushing us to order our soup bases, when half our party was just sitting down (literally bums not even on our seats yet), and was visibly getting annoyed when we each took turns looking at the ONE ipad to choose our soup bases. You order your soup bases and meats with the server. All other items like vegetables and other cooked items are self serve and you have to get up to get your food. They also have a large sauce bar, variety of fruits, desserts, and unlimited soda cans. They did have a 2 item per person policy for their more expensive food items like abalone, snakehead fish, and a few more. Now onto why this review is just a 2 star. It's quite expensive for the quality of food you get. The starting price per adult is $50 + your soup base of choice ranging from $16-$20. prior to tax and tip that's already sitting at $70 per person. HEFTY price tag for what you get. The quality of food is also not that great, since there's not a lot of diners in the restaurant, they don't refill their food items. Most of the things are very picked over and doesn't look that appetizing. Prime example being their fruits and their two ice cream tubs, which were almost fully finished but not replenished. When we asked for fried sesame balls, the wait staff only brought out 4, and when we asked for more, the waiters response was he will bring more once we finish the 4 balls - spoiler - he never brought any out for the rest of the night even though there was no more. I unfortunately won't be coming back, as there's a lot more better competition of hot pot restaurants out there that have far higher quality than this spot. A large selection of food for all types of diets (we had a shellfish allergy in our group, which is usually difficult for hotpot). There is cooked foods available for you to eat while you wait for your raw foods to cook. Each person gets their own pot, and you can choose to have a full pot of a single broth, or a mix of 2 small broths. It is quite pricey (~$70 after tax) and you have to pay for the broth, but definitely fills you up. Service was poor, where it took forever to wave down for a server. Been wanting to try this place since I saw it opening a few years ago. I finally made it last Tuesday evening after going to the gym Downtown Markham which is just a few minutes away from this place. When my friend called the day before to inquire whether you can do individual pots (you can), they recommended that we make a reservation. I thought interesting, how busy can it be on a Tuesday evening? Well, upon arrival, I laughed as the restaurant was not busy at all. The service was amazing! The ladies are attentive. They had covers for people who wore jackets inside (I didn't as I know how much the smells can stick & a jacket is not as easy to wash as regular clothes). They also brought any dishes to us that was freshly prepared and offered it directly to us instead of us possibly miss ordering it through the iPad. All the food items are ordered and submitted using an iPad. The only thing you need to get up for is to make/get your sauces at the sauce station. I actually didn't bother getting any as the food started arriving (they are pretty quick and on top of this) and was very hungry. I also heard that the tomato based soup broth is very flavorful and no additional sauce is needed which I found true. My 3 star rating is mostly due to the cost of this ACYE hot pot... $35.99 for weekday pricing + an additional $10.99 per person based on the soup base selected. $35.99 is decent in today's world for ACYE but an additional $10.99 for broth is steep. If it was around $5.99 then I'm all in. Also, on their website, I saw pictures of abalone, crab, lobster sashimi (all this high end items) but none of it was available. I was really excited because I've been wanting to try this hotpot place for a while as I pass by it quite often. I was a bit disappointed because the service wasn't really good. We came on a weekday and wasn't busy but our server seemed unhappy when explaining how everything worked. When we asked for tissues as we didn't get any, she sighed then went to get it. Another time we asked her to refill the soup, she poured like very little as if she was trying to save it? So we ended up asking other servers to refill our soup and for other items the rest of the night. You can order meats and other items on the iPad. As well as get your own outside, they have different selections for fruits, hot snacks and more. They have a premium menu that is limited two dishes per person. Don't make the mistake like me of getting the cuttlefish as a premium item because they literally have it outside. So I visited this place wayyyy back (pre-covid), visited again once they reopened to the public after quarantine measures were lifted and recently, came BACK for my gf's mom's bday. The first time I came w/ my friends (pre-covid) this resto blew my mind. It's a 2 floor resto with ice beds and buffet stations on the main floor. The way the resto USED to work before covid, was that they laid out all the seafood and meat at the buffet station. I'm talking SCALLOPS, ABALONE, SEA CUCUMBER, etc. And ALL of these premium items were INCLUDED in the price and you could grab an UNLIMITED amount and then they would REFILL the ice bed. I vividly remember gleefully bringing two full plates of giant scallops back to my table on that first visit. My friends and I thought we had discovered the casino jackpot when it came to good hotpot. Yes, the price was mad high compared to its counterparts in york region, but we thought it was definitely justified given how much was actually included in the overall price. Fast forward to post-quarantine, my friends and I visited and were SOO disappointed with the way the resto was running. They removed all the seafood and unique items from the ice beds and buffet stations. Instead, they replaced everything with cold appetizers and salads as well as desserts. They implemented an ipad ordering system (1 ipad per table) and all the premium seafood that had once been INCLUDED in the overall price, suddenly became a limit of 2 per person. Upset is not even the right word. I had literally been looking forward to unlimited scallops but now I only get 2? LAME. The premium angus beef cubes weren't really premium either btw. You're better off sticking with the regular sliced beef, lamb, pork on the menu as it's marbled enough. The angus cubes were actually kinda tough. My friends and I had a good laugh as the cubes were listed as a premium item. I thought it was understandable at the time why they moved things off the ice bed in the open for anyone to touch, but removing premium seafood from the AYCE price altogether seemed very sneaky and shady. Fast forward again to present day and my gf's mom (and her sis's bf) decided to host a joint bday dinner here. I had my fingers crossed hoping that the resto reverted to laying everything back out on the ice beds. To my dismay, they stuck w/ the same stations and ipad ordering system from my 2nd visit. If there's one thing that's remained consistent, it's good service and the quality of the sliced meat. Very well marbled meat, EXCELLENT sauce bar (very promptly refilled too) and the table service is A++. They brought the initial round of meat to the table with some dry ice presentation which was really cool for video taking. Perhaps, I'm being harsh or finicky but it can't be helped. Lamb spine was ok but fish was very spicy. Tomato was especially thick. The soups here have more meat than at other places Some premium items (limit of 2 per person) are included For lunch, only the sauce was taken from buffet table. Dinner should see the table used to its intended purpose. The sesame oil (for dipping sauce) comes in a can. Which leaks. So things can get messy. The cooked dishes were ok. Crispy pork (premium item) was very good: light & crispy. Shrimp crisp (shrimp crackers) had little flavour like other places in the GTA. They have a 2 hr dining limit & someone popped up with the bill without us asking for it, which was kind of annoying. Great premium hotpot! First off, this restaurant is HUGE. The decor is also very nice like traditional chinese decor. They have two floors with plenty of seats, although I still recommend making a reservation if you can. It is a AYCE hotpot spot, but soup base is extra and some items on the menu are premium items so it's limited. Price is $35.99 Monday-Thursday and $38.99 Friday-Sunday which is on the pricier side, but in my opinion worth it. We tried the tomato broth and the mushroom broth and both were equally tasty. Ordering items is done through an ipad. There is a self serve sauce station in the middle of the restaurant where you can grab your own sauces and toppings along with their famous sesame oil that comes in a cute little can. There are many items to choose from including various meats, veggies, noodles, and side dishes. The presentation of everything is also very pretty so you feel like you're eating premium food. Finally, the service is also great. They provide a cover for your jacket on your chair to protect it from spills and food as well as a ziplock bag for you to store your mask while you eat. I love this ! Overall, I had a great experience here with my partner and we both enjoyed our dinner very much. As soon as we walked in we were impressed by how big, spacious, and nice the restaurant is. We were even given a cover to throw over our jackets and an apron for us to wear to protect our clothes from splashing broth! We felt like the menu had plenty to choose from, however there is a distinction between the regular and premium menu. We could only order two items each from the premium menu, so with two of us we only got to try four premium items. The skewers on the premium menu were really tasty and definitely worth ordering. From the regular menu we really enjoyed all the meat and vegetables. The meat seemed to be good quality and the vegetables were fresh. The chicken broth we ordered was very flavourful and we'd definitely get it again. The dessert options were surprisingly good. We'd highly recommend the fruit platter, which had really fresh cantaloupe and watermelon considering they are out of season. With delicious food and excellent service we were really happy with our experience. One downside was how restricted we were from ordering premium items. The biggest drawback was definitely the price, which almost hit $140 including tax and tip for two people. I live nearby this place so I finally decided to give it a try. We were able to call in and reserve a table the same day which was nice considering it was the weekend. We got the spicy and sour fish soup and pork bone and it was really good. Honestly the food here was really decent so it was disappointing that everything else sucked. For the price of around 60 ish after tax per person, you would think you have more options??? There were not many options at all... The worse part of all of this was whenever we order meat, it literally took over 30 mins to come. I'm so confused because it's not like there is a special preparation for them? I didn't find the food super tasty or anything. Honestly for the price you pay, I was a little disappointed. Soup base - borderline okay. I think I can make a tastier soup base at home. The mild spicy is super spicy by normal standards and the bone soup did not have much flavour and was super oily. I have had better soup bases at other hot pot restaurants. The meats were pretty good. We tried all of them - beef, lamb, pork belly, beef tongue. There really wasn't much variety beyond that. No chicken here. The only chicken they have is in the fried appetizers in the form of gizzards or wings on a stick. Service was pretty good and quick. Table layout not friendly for more than 4 people because then you have to split to another adjacent table. There is a dipping sauce station for you to create your own mix of sauces and dessert option was popsicles and fresh sliced fruit which were good. Overall, I was underwhelmed and thought everything was just OK. But I don't want an OK meal when I am paying hundreds of dollars and for a special occasion. I like it here! It's Sichuan-style hotpot, spicy type. First of all, amazing interior. Liked the crane lanterns standing at the entrance, so Chinese. Also their cutleries were cultural, especially the pots. I selected double sided soup base (half spicy half regular), and asked the waitress lady to make me the sauce which she did and it was pretty good. One of the key factors of a tasty hotpot is the sauce - you adjust each ingredient based on your own preference. I'm so bad at making sauce so asked for a regular combo, didn't know what she put but it was good. The meat was great. I liked the fish and shrimp paste. Blood tofu was good too. They had an authentic Chinese hotpot experience within a beautiful setting, the inside looked like a palace! This all-you-can-eat experience had so many options to choose from, including a huge variety of seafood and meats! They also had prepared cooked dishes, which were absolutely delicious (I really liked the braised beef shank and taro root dishes!) We got 3 soups, which included the classic Spicy Mala, White Pepper Chicken and Pork, along with Tomato. I would say the food was super fresh and presentation was beautiful as well! Xiang Zi is a premium all-you-can-eat hotpot place located in the Whole Foods plaza on Birchmount and Hwy 7. It's been opened for a while and I've heard great things, but I also heard it was very expensive (especially when you consider the four $$$$ on Google Maps!). After trying a bunch of mediocre hotpot places in the area, I finally gave Xiang Zi a try. Parking is just fine - even though it shares the parking lot with Whole Foods and other restaurants and retail stores, there is ample parking. Beware that there are some parking spots that are limited to quick pickups (within 30min). I made a reservation for 3 at 6:30pm on a Monday night over the phone very easily. When you arrive, you're met with very large wooden doors and it's pretty aesthetic walking into the restaurant. It's a couple of long hallways and someone will greet you at the end. They have several tables - some with a large shared hotpot (booths) and others with smaller individual hotpots (tables). They show you how to use their iPad and what you're limited on, what costs extra, and ask you what soup base you want. We got the shared hotpot and got the mushroom soup base which was an extra $18.99. I believe the individual hotpots are about $6-8 extra. If you want a split large hotpot, it's $27.99. They have a free sauce station, in the middle of the restaurant. You can go up to the station to pick your own sauces. They also have cute little cans of sesame oil! As for food, each person is limited to 2 premium items, which range from things like duck intestines, mussels, scallops, and skewers. I found that I wasn't craving for a lot of the premium items and being limited to 2 was just enough. The rest of the food was great - I especially liked their fresh cut lamb and beef. They don't have the widest selection, but the food is great quality which makes up for it. Each order has several portions - which they list in the description of the item on the iPad. They also have several desserts, including some fruits, Chinese desserts, Melona bars (coconut, mango, melon), and cakes (green tea, tiramisu, cheesecake). Service throughout the meal was also very great. They gave us little plastic ziploc bags to put our masks in, but I wish they also had other covers - my bag still smells like the broth the day after! Weekday dinner price for adults was $35.99, which honestly is pretty much the same for any AYCE restaurants these days. In total, it was about $53 per person for our soup base (including tax and tip). I wouldn't say it's super pricey unless you get their extra-cost premium items. This restaurant is Kuanzhai Alley (宽窄巷子) ? I learned about hot pot while living in LA. Then I moved back to Toronto looking forward to trying the great asian cuisine here and covid happened so I couldn't. Sad. Now that I am able to eat out more I am very happy to have discovered this place. They were really great here. Sometimes I eat at places and they don't know what to do with me because I am not east asian. But the people working here were super patient, and nice and kind. I felt very welcome here. The inside decoration is really cool, and I enjoyed sitting at the table. I also liked that they thought of all the small details like bags for our masks, and chair covers for our jackets. The food was also very good. I have not have hotpot in Toronto, but I have had it in in Los Angeles and I enjoyed it here in comparison to what I have had before. The only downside is the fact that we paid for the broth on top of the initial 37$ starting fee. Everywhere else I have eaten the broth is included in the initital fee. I don't think a lot of people understand that, so it would probably bother some people. I can kind of understand them doing this though. They refilled my Tom Yum soup a number of times, and good broth takes a long time to make - so it makes sense they would charge for it like this. XiangZi Hotpot - Hot Pot Near Me - Markham, Ontario

Despite the low reviews, I still really wanted to try out this place. I called them to make reservations for 3 but they said I'd have to just wait for a table cause they didn't take reservations. Ok fine. I got there at 6:15 and asked for a table of 3 and they asked me if I had reservations and I'm like ???? Then they told me that all was left was shared pots and that I would have to share a large pot with 3 people and that was no bueno. I was gonna leave but then they suddenly freed up a table thank goodness. Luckily there was also a promo for 20% off dinner. We were seated upstairs which was peaceful and less crowded which I enjoyed but the stairs were tiring. lol, first world problem. I love how there were aprons and they put a cover over your jackets and they don't skimp out on giving you napkins. Drinks were not included, only tea and water. There were a lot of food. Not a lot of tofu or fish ball. Unlimited scallop and peas sprout!! They also gave us two plates of lamb on the house which was nice. Lots of seafood and marinated meat, veggies. I also really enjoyed their cooked food, it was like a separate buffet lol. There's a lot of dessert compared to other hot pot places. Some fruits, mousse (I was too full to try them all but the Oreo was surprisingly good!), walnut/butterfly cookies, Asian sweets (Black Rice Soup, white fungus soup), ice jello (amazing way to end off your meal!!), and ice cream (vanilla and green tea). They also have a points system where you give your telephone number and when you accumulate enough points you get s free meal. Overall I really enjoyed my meal and service was amazing!! I saw a lot of the reviews commented on sub par service and whatnot but I actually had a really good experience. They cleared the table and asked if we wanted more soup, recommended us to eat more scallop (idk why I found that funny), and always checked in with us. Besides what happened when trying to get a table, I'd have to give them a 5 star. Definitely give them a try while they still have their 20% off promotion going on cause yes, they are on the high end expensive side. read more

I must say Xiangzi Hot Pot has become my favorite Szechuan Hot Pot in Toronto. First of all, it is the magnificent decorations. Its traditional architecture makes me feel like staying in Chinese blockbuster movies. From opulent marble tables to hand-carved hardwood decorations, they are all delivered from China, which provided me truly a wonderful dining experience as I used to be in Szechuan. Secondly, they gave me a safety anti-COVID protection. Once you sit at a table, the 4 tables around it are not allowed to serve customers. Instead of taking food by ourselves, Xiangzi provides iPad to us for ordering. The staff will help us to create the sauces. For the food, I need to say, they taste authentically just like in China. I highly recommend the tomato soup as soup base. It is clamed that the chef cooks the tomato soup for 4 hours. You even don't need to dip any sauce, food from the tomato soup tastes super good! The second one is mushroom soup pot, which is good to those who don't like spicy food. For seasoning, I will recommend their secret sesame paste and sesame oil (it is supplied specially from China). For food, tripes（毛肚）, duck blood curd（鸭血）, duck intestine（鸭肠） and Beef heart tube （黄喉）are good, if you really wanna understand well the hot pot culture, don't miss it! Individual pots are $35.99 per adult from Monday to Thursday (+$3 for Friday and weekends), to which you add one of three soup bases: spicy (+$7.99), tomato (+$5.99), or chicken mushroom (+$5.99). While the cost for the elder and child will be $25.99 and $15.99 from Monday to Thursday (+$3 for Friday and weekends). In my opinion, it is a window to know more about Chinese culture. read more

Ok so this place is pricier than other hotpot places. Its also very much higher end. The keg costs more than kelseys. Location: Markham at warden and 7. In the whole foods plaza. Parking: Lots of parking but around the building theres a few stores you may have to walk 1 minute instead of 30 s Decor: This place is nice. It's very elegant and tasteful. When you first walk in it feels like you stepped into the pages of a designer magazine. The restaurant itself is beautiful , so beautiful. Food: There are two things here. An impressive Hotpot buffet and a small buffet of cooked food. I like both. They have fresh bamboo and a ton of choices if you are vegan! Lots of seafood too! Service: On point. They have a lot of people working here so there's always someone within waving distance. The best device I've had at a hotpot place ever. Cost: So it's pricy. All those reviews of peephole whining about cost is annoying. They don't hide the price, it's listed on their website predominately . They tell you if you ask when you make a reservation. If you can't afford it don't come then complain about how expensive it is, you knew coming in. I've been and will be back. I really like this place! read more

I love the high end Chinese atmosphere and decor of the restaurant. Lovely, even my kids who don't usually like going to Chinese restaurants enjoyed being in the restaurant. It gives a grand feeling once you open the huge wooden doors. Wonderful huge waiting area, and 2 floors of tables. Some tables you share a pot, some tables have individual pots. It is all you can eat buffet style hot pot. This Place was already full house at 6pm when we went, we were escorted 2nd floor to our table. At first we didn't want to be upstairs, but then it was individual pots, so even my kids can experience hot pot themselves. They had lots of fun.. but little did I realize it came with a cost!!!!!! You have to pay extra for soup for each pot!!!!!! Which mean since we all had our own pots, we were paying extra four soup base! It is already $38.99 to come in, then gotta add for soup base like another $8...depending what you choose. Then... you have to pay for sauce for each person too! And it's by the buffet where all the food is, so not sure why we would have to pay extra. Food was just so so especially I expected more when I am paying $38 per person. There are lots of variety, but quality wasn't good. You basically go for presentation / atmosphere of restaurant , not for the food. 2 adults and 2 kids- bill came up to $151. Very expensive for quality of food. Tried it once, and would not have to return. One thing also I saw was that there were people who are waiting for tables come in with their jackets to just pick at the food, or take desserts while waiting for a table. I didn't like that. I am surprised this place isn't rated better. Doing this review to try and do it more justice. Midweek last week, me and my partner were craving some good hotpot, but our usual "go to" place (non AYCE) was so fully booked there was only the odd hours left. Consulted Yelp to look for another alternative and saw XiangZi. We know of this place has been around for a few years now but haven't really heard much about it. All the photos from Yelp actually looks very appealing and for us, cleanliness and comfort, as well as good selections are the key. Most review do state the food quality and service are good, but somehow the rating was low because of the cost. Ok, to be fair, the pricing isn't low for what you would expect of typical Asian food. However, for higher end hotpot, especially if you compare with some other non AYCE higher end place, the price is indeed pretty reasonable. As you get the variety of more expensive seafood item, as well as aYCE meat. Also, the meat skewers are great. We had both the lamb and the beef skewers. They are delicious, just the right amount of spice. The place is very nice and comfortable. Service was great. All I can say is we are happy to have tried this place and this will likely replace our usual go to HP place (or at least be on even footing where we wil rotate between this place and our other usual). read more

Honestly don't know why people are complaining about having to pay premium for broth... it's pretty standard to. Sure there are some that give free broth but it's not as flavourful. Also some of the hotpot places in Richmond Hill are waaaay more expensive than this place! Ordered a lot as it's AYCE. But just be warned, if your spice tolerance is not that great, then don't order the spicy as their spice is definitely next level! Definitely recommend the premium beef! It's cool how they provide you with an apron as I always tend to eat like a pig. Their skewers are so good too! Better than the other skewer places around Markham/Scarb. I gave one less star because their desserts aren't that great... Mochi cookie - I found to be boring and tasteless Tiramisu - dry Dessert soup - it was okay but the peanuts threw me off Melona - coconut was good! Verdict... this place became our favourite place for hotpot (in Ontario) and looking forward to our next visit! read more

I didn't actually want to have hot pot here at Xiang Zi after reading all the low reviews on Yelp. I've only decided to because my dad wanted to give it a try. The interior is very nicely decorated - it reminds me of those Chinese palaces in the olden-times . This place is very spacious but I felt like they wasted a lot of space by creating a huge hallway when you walk in. The service was good but it was over-staffed when I visited. As expected, there were so many hidden fees!! Expect lots of fees: * add money per person for hot pot * add money for one big pot or add money for each small pot per person * add money for "better beef"/ "better food" We spent approximately $70 per person for hot pot.
