New Hong Kong Market in Chinatown is my go-to place for frozen buns (bao). The last row against the…read morewall, has all the freezers and they are stocked with different brands of frozen buns, shrimp dumplings, soup dumpling (xiao long bao) and glutinous rice balls (tong yuan). They have the cleanest freezers because they don't post their price tags all over the glass. They have the salted egg yolk custard buns here and they're $6 for 12 pieces. All the frozen buns in the baby blue colored package are good. The buns are moist and soft when you steam them at home. If you're looking for Asian sauces, dried noodles, Asian canned goods, or authentic snacks, you will also find those here. The aisles are tight, and each shelf is filled with merchandise. If you can't find something, ask the person sitting at the register and they will let you know if they have it and which aisle. The owners speak Mandarin and a little bit of English but if you show them a photo of the product on your phone, they'll be able to help you out. Whenever I shop in Chinatown, I park in the Marin Tower parking. The parking structure is well lit, and they have reasonable rates. It's only a few minutes walk to New Hong Kong Market.

Today they also have a daughter working for them and it's nice to see generational businesses. You still feel that connection with them. I used to look forward to peaches from Georgia back in the day. Then the peaches grove didn't continue doing business because it got so costly for them. It was really a sad thing for it was something I looked forward to and my daughter did too! But, with the times we move on. They have delicious kind mango now in season with big island lychee. The big island lychee has a very small pit inside and so lots of it is mainly the flesh and juice of the lychee. I bought a one day old bag that gets a little suntanned and it $1 off!! Nothing wrong with it. I tasted it and still juicy and softly crunchy. Excellent!! Everyone loves a bargain. I also buy my Chinese seeds from them. They have the sweet seed, honey ginger, and lemon peel that are all my favorite. They also have a ton of other items but today I did not take pictures. I will however do so next time. It's definitely a place to visit and get the best and sweetest lychee and mango during summer time!!!

My sister asked me to get green onions, Chinese parsley, and choong choi (preserved vegetable) for the jook (congee) that she was cooking for Christmas Eve. I accepted the challenge. Luckily, I found free street parking on King Street, right in front of Xin Wang Market. It was relatively neat and clean! I took a look around and found the Chinese parsley and green onion. I asked staff for the choong choi. They thought that I meant bok choi and showed me a package of fresh vegetable. I said (in English) that it's not that, but the preserved vegetable, rolled up in a ball. LOL - they were speaking Chinese to each other and told me that they don't have it. Okay... I just paid cash and went to the next store. I think I got a good deal of the green onion and Chinese parsley? $3.50 for both!

#ThankYouThursday…read more Xin Wang Market is the first business I thought of to thank. I've been coming here for so many years ever since it opened. I'm always taken care of when I come here. The owners are always friendly and nice, and I always have a good experience and get what we I need and want. Of course during this pandemic, it's safer to stay home as much as possible, but you do need to get out once in a while to replenish the kitchen. I try to buy most of the things I need from here to support them. Coming to shop here did bring back some normalcy as opposed to eating the same fruit and vegetables from the Costco bulk size bags, so I'm grateful and thankful they've stayed open as much as they could during the peak times of the pandemic because it's an essential business. A lot of risk was taken during the early months as everyone just wore those blue disposable masks and some did not even wear masks at all. At least now, you have better masks, face shields, and have time to build dividers between the customers. Stay strong. Stay safe. Support local!

The back of the store now has lights on. You can see in the back of the store. You no longer need to be apprehensive about venturing in the back of the previously unlit store. There is air conditioning, however, it doesn't seem to work well. I was in here for ten minutes and perspiring due to humidity and heat. I asked the one employee if she was uncomfortable in working in this heat. She replied that they are required to keep the front door open to let customers know it's open, so much of the cooled air escapes. It is crazy warm inside. Service is good. The one employee must stock, look out for customers and ring up sales. There is a half off table that I didn't observe in the past. Some of the drinks in the refrigerated section appear ready to burst. Overall, plus one star for labeling and price tags. I picked up a few sugar free and low calorie drinks to try here.

Which makes this review frustrating to write. The rice is exceptional. The sourcing is thoughtful, the seasonal varieties are genuinely special and if you care about Japanese rice, this place deserves its reputation. The service does not. On my latest visit I walked in with my family, including my two and four year old. If you've ever shopped with kids that age, you know you're already working overtime keeping little hands off displays, making sure nothing gets broken, trying to be respectful of the space. Not once did anyone greet us. No hello. No welcome. No acknowledgment that we'd even walked through the door. When I asked what I thought was a perfectly reasonable question whether I should buy the limited seasonal rice or the variety I'd enjoyed on a previous visit the answer felt dismissive, almost like I was wasting their time. If you're building a business around expertise, helping customers understand the differences shouldn't feel like pulling teeth. That's the entire point of having knowledgeable staff. Yes, the parking is inconvenient. Yes, the prices are premium. I can live with both because the product is genuinely excellent. What I can't understand is why a store built around craftsmanship seems so indifferent to hospitality. I still bought the rice because it's that good. But I left feeling like my business was expected, not appreciated. I sincerely hope they improve because I'd rather support them than look elsewhere. But if another shop opens with rice of this quality and people who simply smile, say hello and take a minute to help customers make a decision, I'll switch without thinking twice.
