Yaar is conveniently located right by the Ditmars Boulevard subway station. We went on an early Saturday evening. The staff is very friendly and we were seated right away. We happened to be dining there during a World Cup game so there was a TV on in the back (not sure if that's their usual setup). I ordered the chicken tandoori (bone-in), my SO got the chicken tikka masala, and we shared a garlic naan. I got a masala chai to drink and my SO just stuck to water. We did not have to wait too long for the food. My chicken tandoori came out on a sizzling plate with a side of rice. The chicken was so tender, juicy, and flavorful. I ate the slices of onion on the sizzling plate with the chicken and rice. The garlic naan was nice and hot, crisp on the outside, studded with plenty of garlic, and soft and chewy on the inside. It was good for sopping up the chicken tikka masala sauce. My SO felt that my bone-in chicken tasted better than the chicken that came with the tikka masala, so he would consider ordering one of the other bone-in options next time (butter chicken (bone-in) or chef's special chicken (bone-in) biryani). I have been coming to Yaar for over 2 years now, every time I am in that area of Astoria. Cannot resist. The staff is always very pleasant to interact with. Food comes out relatively fast. I have only purchased take out, so I cannot comment about the experience of eating in. Inside the restaurant the lighting is a dark. I think that is just the ambiance they are going for because it has always been like that. The murals on the walls are incredible. My favorite is the elephant with other animals in the front. I think the restaurant does more take out business then eat in. I see a lot of people picking up their food same as me. But maybe I am not visiting during busy hours. The food is consistent. As an American woman married to an Indian man who's been to India multiple times, I'm sad to report that the flavors of this restaurant were very underwhelming. Mistake #1: my husband read a lot of reviews and hyped this place up for both himself and me. I've since told him to stop doing that. We started with the Lasuni Gobi and an order of Samosas. The samosas were average, however I was super happy that they had ketchup available for me to dip mine into! (Stop judging, I'm American and prefer ketchup over chutney haha). As for the Lasuni Gobi, the flavor was super underwhelming. Pretty bland and not as garlicky as we had imagined. Plus, it was not as crispy of a dish as we would've liked. For our main dish, we shared Paneer Makhani, which is my absolute favorite curry! We told them to do it spicy and while it did have a bit of a kick to it, it severely lacked flavor. I'm choosing to give them 4-stars because the service was great! And the atmosphere was very fun. They had beautiful murals all over the walls and were playing fun, upbeat Bollywood music in the background. Additionally, they're getting 4-stars because this is a great restaurant for Americans who aren't directly exposed to Indian culture to enjoy. I know a lot of my friends would love this place! As for me, I've been exposed to waaay too much authentic Indian food to consider coming back. First time coming to Yaar but it will most likely not be our last! We came in around 4:00pm for a late lunch. The food was delicious and the only thing better than our butter chicken, chicken tikka masala and shrimp biryani was the people! I highly recommend Yaar if you want delicious Indian cuisine. Conveniently located right by a train station w/ a municipal parking lot directly behind the restaurant. Inside there many tables where the ambience in warm and inviting and very friendly staff. We are from the north shore of Long Island and our favorite Indian restaurants are located in Hicksville but no more. We now have Yaar in Astoria to go to. Run don't walk to Yaar. You can thank me later. We ordered the butter chicken, chicken tikka masala and shrimp biryani for the 3 of us. Everything came out piping hot and delicious. I'm actually super sad because this used to be my go to Indian restaurant. I feel like it's gone down in quality in the past few years, especially for their weekend buffet. They took it away previously but recently announced its return. My bf and I were so excited so we made a trip here on a Sunday. We came around 12 and it was pretty quiet. They didn't have a ton of options but it was enough. The samosas were humongous and pretty tasty but after one, I've already taken up half my stomach space. I enjoyed a lot of the veggie options as they were flavorful and cooked nicely. However, the chicken dishes they had were sooooo dry. It was so difficult to eat so in the end, I just scooped the sauce over rice. Somehow though, the tandoori chicken is always on point! It's juicy and so tender. Heard this place is good so went & 2 of us got the three-course meal each. I got butternut squash soup, chicken fennel chicken curry, & kheer. The butternut squash soup was extremely spicy for some reason. This is the 1st time i had spicy butternut squash soup. Totally unexpected, was very surprised. Not a good choice right after an endoscopy. The chicken curry was decent, good. The kheer wuda been perfect if it was half as sweet but it was still good. My mom got a chicken samosa which came with sweet tamarind sauce & either possibly green chili sauce both doused on the bottom on the plate touching the bottom of the samosa. This is a horrible way to present a dish imo. Sauces should always be served separate on the side since there's no guarantee if one will like the sauces & so that one has control over the amount of sauce to be ingested. She also got lamb tikka masala. The curry itself was pretty sweet but I'm not a fan of lamb due to the smell. The plain naan is good. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night. We were the only table dining at 830pm. Regardless, our waiter was very nice. We got two orders of samosas, lentil soup, chicken vindaloo, lamb saag, and mixed biryani. The samosas were delicious and very crispy. The lentil soup was good too. Our waiter did warn us that the chicken vindaloo would be SPICY, and it really was! I was not ready for that flavor! The lamb saag is usually my favorite. The spinach was delicious, but I wish the dish was a bit spicier. Same with the mixed biryani. The flavors were muted outside of the chicken vindaloo. A recent Delivery.com promotion caught my eye when I was hungry and I chose to get a combo from Yaar consisting of Chicken Samosas, Chicken Tikka Marsala, Rice and Galub Jumun. I've had take out from Yaar twice. It's so damn good I forget to take pictures because we go in on our meals like we'll never have them again. I've gotten the Navrattan Korma and the Butternut Squash Kofta. Both VERY solid dishes. So unbelievably flavorful, creamy and just out right delicious. The veggies in the Navrattan are just the right texture for a nice bite to pair with the almond coconut cashew nut sauce. The Kofta Croquettes were nice sized and fulfilling and accompanied the cashew nut almond yogurt sauce very nicely. I couldn't even finish. Love having leftover sauce to soak up the rice. My daughter indulged in the Saag Paneer her first go and thought it was so tasty. Can't go wrong with cheese! She fell in love with my Navrattan Korma and decided to get it our second go. She was in HEAVEN. The hubs enjoyed the Tandoori Mixed grill that he got it both times. Sheek and Malai kebabs, Tandoori chicken and shrimp. Nice hearty pieces of meat. A man's dish. Zero complaints. Basmati rice accompanies all entrees. We enjoyed the Samosa Trio (veggie, chicken and lamb) and the sauces (tamarind: sweet and tangy; cilantro: herby and cucumber raita: cool and refreshing) are perfect pairings. Extremely disappointing. We came here in Mid September and left disappointed! We ordered two lamb kormas, onion naans, and a mango lassi. The kormas had no taste, even bland. You could not taste any of the ingredients esp, including the cashew nuts advertised. By Astoria's standards, this is not a good Indian restaurant. by any means. I'm not sure if this was just an off day, but the experience was not very good. Compared to other similar Indian restaurants, they fell short. The decor and interior, while tasteful, make the dining experience a little hard to take in and read the menu, so that was not great if you did not wear glasses. First impression of this place isn't good. Came for lunch at 1pm on a Saturday and the place was a ghost town I was the only one there. Waiter seemed very detached and not interested in serving much. Drink menu was very limited.(inquired about a cocktail list and was told they didn't have any.) Food menu was pretty standard nothing out of ordinary for an Indian restaurant. Ordered two appetizers the tandoori wings and seekh kabobs took quite some time for them to come. Upon receiving them it seemed these portions were enormous. Lol. Overall pretty tasty appetizers felt like they made them fresh hence the wait. (If your visiting this spot make sure you keep that in mind if your by yourself.) Ordered entrees chicken korma and Chana masala. Both of which I would say were very Americanized and had a pre made masala that didn't live up to my standards. You can easily taste they probably re use the same curry base for most of their dishes. Would I come back here again? Stopped in to pick up a quick snack. They have really good potato samosas, 2 big pieces with green chutney for $5, I also tried the papri chaat &5, which was ok, its a small portion, it had lots of flavor but not enough chickpeas or garnish, it was mostly fried papri covered in sweet tamarind sauce and yogurt. Parking around here is tough. They look like they get a lot of delivery orders going out considering it was 12pm and the place was empty. I really wanted to love this! The food came incredibly well packed, fresh and steaming hot. The portions are generous and the order was enough for both of us, with leftovers for the next day. Delivery was quick as well. We ordered chicken biryani, chana masala (came with rice, naan and mulligatawny soup) and took advantage of their buy one get one free promo for roti. They delivered on our request for very spicy and it was much appreciated. However, the food lacked salt which can really alter the overall taste. While most places tend to over salt or oil, this place played it safe. I appreciated the clean taste of the food but wish it was just a little better seasoned. The butter chicken was delicious, some of the best I've had which is why I've given 2 stars. The rest was not good. The chana masala - the flavor of the masala was ok but the chickpeas were hard and lacking flavor, as if they were just thrown from a can into a premade masala for a short sauté, then served. Not fresh. The naan was super dry and hardly edible. Also not fresh. The rice that came with the entrees was disgusting. It ruined the meal for me. It was not fresh at all, instead it was hard and was probably made days before it was served to me. Also the employee was a bit rude, so no stars for customer service. I love this place! They have splendid food, they have a nice menu, The chief cook in that spot is a professional, I enjoy very much trying all their dishes. The dishes are always fresh and tasty, the service towards the visitors is good. I go often to this restaurant and I was never disconnected. This restaurant is my favorite. I go to plenty of restaurants but to this one I constantly return again and again. The stuff is very cordial and the cooking they place on your table is so appetizing. I never miss an opportunity to have a decent dinner here. Highly recommended. The food and service were ahead of our expectations. We truly enjoyed the atmosphere of this place.
