By far the best Japanese restaurant that I've had the pleasure of dining at, where the food and service was out of this world! Happened to stumble on this place while I stopped to pickup pizza next door (which was also a good pizza joint but more on that later). Suck my head in the door and the most pleasant gentleman walked me through their story and dining menu. So I had to come back and experience it for myself. One of our favorite late night happy hour places... The late night menu comes out at 9 PM. We often order the kimchi pork, pork tama which is the basic okonomiyaki (like a thick fried cabbage, bacon, and batter "pancake"), draft beer for $5!, Potato salad and onion salad. It's an economical and tasty way to end the night! Favorite okonomiyaki is mochi! We also like the modan yaki which includes noodles, the octopus butter sauté is yummy too. The meal was great, but the service left a bad taste in our mouths, literally at the very end. We were a group of four ADULT, a 7-year-old KID and a 1-year-old BABY, and our bill came to about $300. When it was time to pay, the waitress hovered over us the whole time. My husband went to leave an 18% tip and she actually stopped him and said no, he needed to do at least 20% because we were a "party of six." She then went and did the exact same thing to my friend. Honestly, if there's a mandatory gratuity for larger groups, that's fine, but tell us upfront or just add it to the bill like normal. Don't stand over us and call us out while we're trying to pay. We eat out at least three times a week and have never had anything like this happen before. And counting a one-year-old as a full "person" for the headcount? Come on. read more

After a long day of trying different foods at different places, my party of 4 came here to eat a small snack of Negiyaki and Mochi Cheese yaki. While we were seated right away, the wait for the food was an awesome 30 minutes on a Monday night at 7:30pm. During the wait, one in our party ordered a Japanese Lemon Sour, a cocktail consisting of shochu (Japanese distilled spirit), fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and carbonated soda water served over ice, but this drink lacked the fresh lemon juice taste. On the other hand, the food was enjoyable with the Negiyaki being somewhat salty and a little over grilled, but the Mochi Cheese had good flavoring and mouth feel. If you were to ask me the best place(s) I had the past year, this would be one of the spots that would standout amongst the rest. Yaki Yaki Miwa is located within a small "plaza", lined along with various other establishments. It is teppanyaki style, with very limited seated, either by the main flat top or in your own cubby (which has its own small flat top as well). The atmosphere is very imitate, as the chef will directly interact with you. They are focused on Okonomiyaki, which I LOVE (hence why I enjoyed this establishment so much). I would note that since you will likely sit near a grill, it does get quite hot inside. The waiter was very friendly, explaining to me the various aspects of the menu and answering all the questions I had (or directly my questions to the knowledgeable chefs) We Ordered: * Cheesy Potato Gratin: 8.7/10: it was filled with potato and cheese, amazingly indulgent start to our meal. * Skirt Steak. 9/10, perfectly cooked, it was tender and meaty and paired perfectly with the cheesy potato and chimichurri they provided * Mochi Cheese Tama: 10/10, we replaced the pork within with beef, it was delicious, I have ZERO complaints * Seafood Negiyaki: 8.8/10: My partner liked this more than the okonomiyaki, but since I LOVE okonomiyaki (especially with the mayo and okonomiyaki sauce), this just couldn't compare. We asked the chef to add cheese and he was hesitant at first as he worried it would conflict with the flavors but we decided to take our chance and went for it. It was good and definitely didn't negatively impact the flavors at all. We were excited to go back to get Okonomiyaki, and bummed to hear Chibo closed since our last visit. After finding this place on Yelp, we thought the photos looked promising. As soon as we entered, we knew it was going to be legit. The layout of the main bar, and the warming grills at the tables, plus the welcoming waitstaff and chef instantly reminded us of being back in Japan. Looking for somewhere different for our group of nine, I found Yaki Yaki Miwa on my Yelp app. There were favorable reviews by my friends, Jo Y. and Irene M., so I was looking forward to this experience! Maybe Yaki Yaki Miwa is not set up for large groups? I had called to make a reservation for 6pm, but I was told that 6:30pm would be better... ok! I reminded our group about dinner and informed them of the time change. Free parking in the back of the building is much appreciated! Some of our friends parked on the street, right in front of the restaurant, since metered street parking is free after 6:30pm! My friend ordered Korokoro Steak - that sounded like chopped steak with some veggies. I decided to order that, too! It was quite good, but didn't look like the photo on the menu. It seems like we got more veggies and less steak? I feel like we waited so long for our meals... I think the air conditioner wasn't working because I was perspiring more than usual! I just wanted to leave! Some of our friends were still waiting for their food... uhg! I apologized and told them I had to go because I needed to wake up at 3:30am. I left cash plus 20 percent tip because we had a big group. Later, they told me about problems with the bill. I didn't know that there was a time limit! First of all, I feel like this place is shady AF with groups of 6+. They state that there is a 20% gratuity automatically added to the bill for groups of 6 or more but it's not added on the bill you receive. Normally it's itemized and you get a grand total but the bill you receive is only for the food and drinks ordered. You are asked to tip when they charge your card so if you didn't catch that verbiage on the bill or aren't sure if you need to tip or not then you can double tip. To avoid being charged 20% later, just pay cash. We were disappointed that we had to pay a 20% tip for bad service all night. The service received this most recent visit was pretty horrible where someone in our group had to say something to our server in both English and Japanese. It's not often that I'm going to take time to update my review of a place but this visit was so bad that I had to take time to write this review. Food took a long time even though we took the server's recommendation to order the same thing. Our table ordered appetizers to share and the same main dish to make it easier on the one person cooking. There was a helper in the back but they definitely need more help. Maybe with more help, they would have caught that one of the drinks they gave someone in our party was in a cracked glass cup! Super dangerous. Our friends on the next table watched us eat our appetizers while having only water to drink. Unfortunately we didn't get refills unless we flagged down our server and I believe she only refilled the water once, maybe twice at most the 2+ hours we were there. After we finished our appetizers, they got their orders and started to eat. We were basically talking story because we had no food nor water for a very long time at our table. The next table finished their meal and we still didn't get our main dish. They waited for us but one person had to leave so she left cash and left. We did ask if they could split the check since it was two separate tables so the other table could leave but they said no because the reservations made was for 9 people. Not very accommodating at all. Maybe they wanted the 20% tip for bad service? The inside is really hot as some of us were sweating in there. This was in December so going outside was much cooler than staying inside. As far as the food, it was ok. Nothing to rave about but we all felt it lacked a little. It's painful to write a subpar review. You do your best to focus on the positives of your experience. Because there weren't many highlights of the experience, you start pointing out the negatives. And unfortunately, the list of negatives bombards the positives. Our foodie group recently met up for a Christmas get together and Yaki Yaki Miwa (YYM) was the venue. The majority of our group haven't been here so we were excited to try them. YYM, which hails from Osaka started over 50yrs ago and has a total of 5 locations (2 Osaka 1 Tokyo 1 Fukuoka) where Hawaii's location started in April 2012. They are located near the corner of S King St and Keeaumoku St with neighbors of La Pizza Rina and Kotetsu Chaya. YYM primarily offers teppanyaki and okonomiyaki. Shout out to Auntie (Nadine C.) who made reservations for our party of 9. I'm grateful for businesses that are willing to accommodate our group so we can have dinner together. It was surprisingly empty as we arrived before our 630pm reservations as there were 3 people dining at the counter. But after we sat down, other customers shuffled in and all 3 booths were filled. Because of the logistics of the establishment, our waitress forewarned our group that we may want to consider ordering the same items. In observing that night, there were 2 chefs (1 at the grill 1 in the back preparing non-grilled items) and 1 wait staff. We took her recommendation where our table of 5 ordered the same dish plus appetizers to share and the other table of 4 had 3 ordering the same dish plus some appetizers. At first the waiting time was utilized with us catching up with each other as it's been a month since we last met. One by one appetizers and my drink were delivered but then there was a long wait in between. Our table shared multiple appetizers but I felt bad for the other table as 2 girls waited for a very long time for their food and just watched us munch away. On the bright side, the food was tasty. Our table really enjoyed the grilled beef tongue was hearty and tender. Loved the chili paste that came on the side. The dressing on the octopus carpaccio was very tasty and refreshing. We also enjoyed the cold tofu appetizer that had a slight spicy kick. Quite delicious. For me personally, the seafood negiyaki was just okay. To be fair, I'm not really a fan of okonomiyaki. But it was standard to me and nothing to write home about. I appreciated the staff provided a basket of condiments (green seaweed, katsuo powder, shichimi pepper and okonomiyaki sauce) for us to use. Not a fan of the sauce so I could control the toppings. Service was below par. There was only 1 wait staff and we had to flag her down multiple times throughout the night, mostly for water as the restaurant had poor ventilation and the AC wasn't powerful enough to keep the restaurant cool. I didn't even notice but my friend saw a huge crack on my grapefruit sour glass that was dangerous. The staff didn't seem to care when I addressed this cracked glass served to me. We asked for separate checks, at least 2 different checks for each table, but our request was denied. One reservation yields one check. Our meal took over 2hrs where at the end, we were restless and tired of waiting. We scrapped the idea of ordering dessert here and asked for the check. No surprise it took time for the check to arrive. Prior to the check arriving, the other table passed their money to me and one left as she was drenched with perspiration. Yes, it was that warm. By this time I had had it with the poor service where I clearly told the server how bad our experience was. We flagged her multiple times for water refills and how towards the end she ignored me when I tried to get her attention. If you want authentic Japanese teppanyaki and okonomiyaki in an enclosed place with poor ventilation and don't mind waiting a long, long time for food - - this place is for you. Sadly, all 9 of us walked away disappointed and majority of us mentioning never to return again. NOTE: Our bill was $440+ and several people mentioned they were still hungry after our dinner. The set up there's a teppanyaki grill with 1 cook then there's another cook that does all the prepping . Also only 1 waitress so when the order comes in the cook will prepare the food then the waitress would deliver to the proper table . The waitress advised us that we can come in and sit down but we cannot order until 6:30pm . So since there was 9 in our party instead of having 2 checks 5 in one group than 4 in the other . Tonight was our first time trying this restaurant off of King St. We've passed by this restaurant many times but never knew what their menu consisted of until just recently when I was craving Okonomiyaki. There aren't too many places that make this locally, and our go-to place in Waikiki closed down. So off to Yelp we went in search or suggestions. That's when Yaki Yaki Miwa popped up. Tonight's review is on service. As we walked in, the hostess asked if we had reservations. We replied that we did not. Mind you, two booths were occupied but the counter chairs and two additional long tables were empty. She replied that she had prior reservations for the empty chairs, but the main chef motioned her to the side. He informed her it would be ok for us to sit at the counter, nearest the teppanyaki cooktop. She then stated we could sit here so long as we would be finished by 6:45pm. It was a little before 5:30 so we said sure, we could make that deadline. And away we went to sampling their food. I would like to say thank you to the head chef that made an accommodation for us this evening. Another couple came in around 6:30 and was turned away and they had to make reservations....for next week. This place is extremely popular. So tip of the day, make reservations ahead of time so you won't be disappointed. BTW, the Okonomiyaki was delicious and so was the Kim Chee. We were lucky! We came in as walk-ins on a full night of reservations with 2 open seats at the counter. Although we were the first ones there, the restaurant became a packed house right after. We were also lucky to have front door street parking. The ambiance had a nice cozy and authentic feel from restaurants in Japan. The entire staff greeted us as we walked in. We started with the spicy cold cucumber. It was topped with a sprinkle of tiny crispy dried fish which made it a fantastic flavorful combination dish. Next, the onion steak with your choice of salt and ponzu sauce dip. Both had a unique taste and both were super good. Beef Tongue followed right behind which was firm yet soft and tasty. My fav was the Pork Jowl and Avocado w/wasabi sauce. The pork had the right amount of fat to make it juicy and flavorful. We also had the Harami Skirt Steak seasoned well, topped with green onions, thumbs up! The Seafood Tama Okonomiyaki was last. It was a nice way to end the meal. This dish pushed us over the top. Overall, everything was top notch authentic Japanese food right here in Hawaii. We cooled things down with dessert, Mina Toast with vanilla and green tea ice cream. What a great experience tonight. I am writing this review on behalf of my friend who has been a customer here 5 or 6 times purely because of the convenient location. But after the last two visits, the service here has reached an absolute rock bottom. First, the blatantly dishonest bill incident: My friend's bill came out to $90, and paid with $200 in cash. The waitress took the money and completely pretended to forget about the change, blatantly ignoring them in hopes of pocketing a $110 tip. Are you serious?! Who in their right mind tips over 120%? My friend literally had to hunt down the staff to demand their hard-earned money back. That isn't just bad service--that is downright opportunistic and deceptive. Thinking maybe it was just a bad night, my friend gave them one last chance. Big mistake. On this most recent visit, after sitting for ONLY ONE HOUR, the waitress repeatedly intruded, begging for orders and rudely reminding them that there is a "two-hour seating limit." They were only halfway through their allowed time! The constant rushing made for an extremely uncomfortable, hostile dining experience. This place treats returning customers like cash cows to be scammed and rushed out the door. The greed and atrocious attitude of the waitstaff have completely ruined what could have been a nice spot. Yaki Yaki Miwa is trying ... but not so much. They have a great location on the corner of Keeaumoku and South King streets. The parking lot in the back is now free. Both great attributes for a restaurant. However, when we dined there a couple weeks ago, the food dribbled out and the service was sub-par. I acknowledge that in this era when people don't want to work, or even work so hard, and restaurants find it hard to hire servers and other employees, the service will suffer. In our party of nine, most of the diners were unhappy. When people are unhappy about the food or the service, the attitude snowballs and the group mood turns negative. Although there were five of us on one table, and four on another, and someone asked for separate tabs for each table, YYM refused and someone in our party said the rationale was that an automatic tip of 20% is added to parties of six or more so they didn't want to break up our tab. Whether that is true or not is subject to conjecture, but the bottom line for me is that I don't think the service warranted a 20% tip. To make matters worse, Daniel C. collected the funds and paid the tab via his credit card, and I believe ended up paying an additional 20% which he didn't collect from everyone because the bill was a little confusing. We ordered the beef tongue as an appetizer to share on our table of five, and I thought it was tough although some others liked it. The okonomiyaki, which is the signature dish for the restaurant, wasn't my cup of tea. I have had better at restaurants which no longer exist in Honolulu. There have been several great reviews by other Yelp Elites, which contributed to out selection of this venue, but I wasn't impressed. In my opinion, YYM needs to try harder. read more

TLDR: Great food, Izakaya style portions, friendly staff, I recommend would come back. I came here on a Saturday evening with my husband. Each table has their own teppanyaki grill and the center of the restaurant has the main grill that the chef intially makes everything on. I love this concept! Pretty much everything is made by the chef and then brought to your table and put on the grill for the food to stay warm during the duration of your meal. They have a huge variety of differen types of japanese savory pancakes. Some of things we got were as follows: Appetizers: Aburi Scallop Carpaccio 5/5. Nice sear on the scallops. The scallops were freshed and came with some sort of miso sauce and had a few fresh vegetables on top to compliment this light bite. Sautee Butter Octopus 5/5: Tender, fresh, chewy. We got to see the chef cook everything right in front of us. They also served this with an ume dipping sauce and powdered salt that you could use. Highly recommend that ume sauce! Very pickly but a little goes a long way so don't get crazy with it. Mains: Mentaiko Cheese omelette 1000000/5: oh my goodness. Literally the best thing I've ever put into my mouth. So cheesy, and delicious. I didn't have high hopes for this but wow was I wrong. I loved the cheesiness of this paired with the briney cod roe. Mix Negiyaki 5/5: This style of yaki uses more green onion than the traditional cabage and came with shrimp, pork, and scallops. Definitely thinner than the other pancakes and had a nice crispiness to it. Pork Modanyaki 4/5: I liked this but I think it was a little carb heavy, since it's a traditional okonomiyaki stuffed with noodles. Flavor was good but was a little salty for my taste. Overall the service here was great. It's not too loud and the staff were really friendly and helpful explaining all the dishes and the different types of yaki. Thus far we had four appetizers every 10-15 minutes or so and no food for the last 20 minutes. Reservations are a must, as this place is popoular with very limited seating. First of all, there is parking in the back (entrance is on S. King Street right after the restaurant (look for a very narrow driveway which is one-way going in). Parking is NOT FREE. Scan the QR code on one of the red signs and pay by the hour (we paid $3 for 2 hours). Once you're seated, you'll need to scan the QR code on the wall to access the menu. The three of us ordered a bunch of dishes to share - all were amazing: - sweet onion salad (onion and dried bonito) appetizer - regular Sobameshi (noodles and rice stir fried with cabbage, shank meat) - seafood modan-yaki (okonomiyaki with noodles folded into the batter) - grilled mixed vegetables - cheese tama okonomiyaki (no noodles) - pork negiyaki (my fave!) All of our dishes were prepared on the L-shaped teppanyaki grill, then delivered to our table on the warmer located in the middle of our table. The warmer did its job of keeping the food hot as we enjoyed our food. There is a time limit (which we were unaware of ) - I believe it's 2 hours. Our server gave us a "last call", so we ordered the Miwa's Toast with Ice cream (we asked for one scoop of vanilla, one scoop of green tea). None of our group had any real positive comments. We had reservations for 6:30 pm. Being early we asked if we could come in and sit. We were let in and seated but was told the we won't be served until 6:30. At that time the restaurant had four people sitting at the counter,and four people in a booth. Service was slow. There was just one server, and one cook. I noticed that about 7:30 another person was helping cook. After our orders were taken the food was a long time coming. My entree was the first to come out. I had finished my dinner when the other entrees started coming out. As for the food ,I had the poke and avocado,tomato salad. The fish was a white fish with lots of vein. My entree was the Abalone. For the price of $44.00 I got seared black pepper abalone. You couldn't taste the abalone. I have to question If I was getting real abalone. The food trickled on to our table. If you search down for the Feb 27, 2026 Yelp review from Benj, I had a very similar experience with my friend. The female waitress was incredibly rude to us to the point where we thought she might be joking. We had just come from exercising and asked for water. She said that they don't give water for free. Shortly after this, we saw her giving free water to other guests. They were Japanese and we were Chinese and Vietnamese. I'm honesty not sure if this played a role but we were pretty upset about it. The food took a long time and it was not good probably because we were thirsty. Hoping others have a better experience, but that was ours. read more

AMAZING FOOD and AMAZING service. All employees are Japanese so that's when you know the restaurant is going to be great overall. The prices are honestly on the cheaper side for the quality of food and the fact that we live in Hawaii. Today was my first time trying and they did not disappoint. We didn't have reservations but we were taken right away and were seated at the counter. That turned out really well. We were able to see the amount pride and artistry that went into every piece of food. The quality of the food and flavors brought out by these masters are second to none. It's like being in Japan without the plane ride. There's a wonderful feeling of home when you are there. It's s a small and cozy restaurant that you'll want to come back to. We recently had the pleasure of dining at Yaki Yaki Miwa. Tucked away on South King Street next to Sasabune, this cozy teppanyaki specialty restaurant offers an array of delicious okonomiyaki, negiyaki, and modan-yaki dishes, along with steak, seafood, and yakisoba. We started with the sweet onion salad, topped with dried bonito flakes. This appetizer provided a refreshing and crunchy contrast to the savory dishes to come. We also indulged in the super pork tama okonomiyaki, a fusion of flavors and textures. The combination of cabbage, flour, eggs, and grated mountain yam created a light and fluffy pancake-like base, while the tender slices of pork added a rich and savory depth. Accompanying the okonomiyaki was the garlic fried rice, a satisfying dish that perfectly complemented the bold flavors of the meal. We also tried the korokoro steak, cooked to perfection on the teppanyaki grill and served piping hot at our table, and the steamed clams infused with white wine and garlic. The plump and tender clams had a burst of briny sweetness, followed by the subtle tang from the white wine and warmth from the garlic. Paid parking is available in the lot behind the restaurant by scanning a QR code. This made it easy to quickly pay for our parking online, with the fee being a reasonable $1.50 per hour. There is also free street parking on South King Street right in front of the restaurant. However, it's worth noting that street parking wasn't available until after 6:30 p.m., so if you have an early reservation like we did, opting for the lot might be the way to go. We had the set meal. Food was okay, it took a really long time between items to come out (20 min between on average), and the portions were super small- while 3/4 of the food was really good, we still left feeling hungry. But what really ruined it was the influencers that came in during prime dinner time (6-7pm) and an influencer couple (seemingly invited to do so) had full bounce flashing lights, kept bumping our table behind him- for about an hour, it really ruined the small, friendly vibe. Things like that that are so involved should be done before opening - so that they're not disruptive to paying customers. You could tell they were prioritizing the influencers experience over ours too. Overall, we won't be back. Okonomiyaki is something a little harder to find in Hawaii. Yaki Yaki Miwa is a great place if you're in search of a good okonomiyaki. On top of that, I highly recommend the sobameshi, scallops with ong choy, garlic clams and yakisoba. Although a little warm, I enjoyed sitting in front of the main teppanyaki area so we could watch the chefs prepare the food. If you're not at this area, each table has a small teppanyaki griddle but this is to keep your food warm, not for cooking on. The inside of the restaurant is pretty small so you'll want to make reservations. There is limited street parking (metered) and parking in the back also. Service is good, food is good, you can't go wrong here. read more

We stumbled upon this interesting place while searching out another restaurant that we passed on eating at. After reading reviews on Yelp it was apparent that that had re-opened in April 2923 after an extended closure. Additionally, they usually only take reservations but it was early and we were only a party of two. We quickly ordered and received two draft beers. The beer was cold and tasty but was lacking some bubbles. It was a bit flat. We ordered cold tofu (Hiyayaku) appetizer which was fresh and tasty and priced reasonably. I got the sautéed clams in garlic and butter while my dining partner ordered the pork okonomiyaki. The clams came out first and we watched as the chef and I assume, owner cooked them up. It was looking great with a decent amount of clams, until....... Until he divided them in half and sent one order to a different table! I was a bit in shock that my $18 order of clams (ala carte mind you) was going to consist of 8 medium small clams. Ugh. Really? The okonomiyaki was decent sized, thick, hot and tasty. The sauce was rich and savory alongside the mayo was a nice compliment to the pancake fresh off the tepanyaki grill. Overall very good place with stellar service but the small portion of clams was a disappointment and dropped my rating down a star. read more
