We ordered a lot of dishes which by the way the price you see on the menu is per skewer (I thought it was at least two) $8 for an overcooked wagu beef meatball on a stick, $4 for most other sticks. We ordered a combination of veggies and meat but all the veggies came out at once followed by all the meat so it got a bit redundant in taste (I think if we had veggies and meat mixed together it would've been better but because they were all small skewers it would get cold if we waited for everything to come out.) I heard a lot of good reviews about this place but for us, the taste was very underwhelming for the price. I was expecting the skewers to taste more bbq or some flavor but it tasted just like dark soy sauce. For the price, I would say my expectations were higher especially because I was just basing it off of reviews from friends and the atmosphere of the place. I will say that the tuna pieces were tasty and that the vibes of the place was very nice! As it is a yakitori restaurant, as soon as you walk in you are hit by a wall of smoke, be aware of that, the ventilation isn't the best in there; you will be leaving smelling like smoke. Anywho my fiance (vegetarian) and I arrived for our reservation at 5pm on a Saturday and there were only a few diners there at that time. We started with the zaru tofu (not pictured) which was slices of very creamy and smooth tofu with sides of a ginger paste, soy sauce, scallions, and sesame seeds, nice appetizer. Cannot speak to their drinks but they had funny cocktail names (IHY I hate you, boys are dumb etc) and I asked the server if there was a story behind it and he said not really. For our yakitori my fiance got the tomato, garlic, and eggplant w miso paste. The first two were literally just grilled tomatoes and garlic and the last was slices of eggplant with a schmear of miso paste on top. Very run of the mill veggie yakitori options. I got the kawa (skin, delicious fried chicken skin that tasted a little like chicharones), tsukune (chicken meatball, it was a chicken meatball but molded into kind of a kebab shape), hatsu (chicken hearts, delicious and surprisingly not that chewy), sorires (chicken oyster, delicious little dark meat nuggets wrapped in some chicken skin), lamb chop (one rack of lamb, as in one bone that was cooked well), kalbi (beef short ribs that were fine, wouldn't get it again), hotate eringi (scallop and king oyster mushroom, both were cooked well), but the star of the show was the momo (chicken thigh). I will say that I am bias towards dark meat since it's the tastier and superior of the poultry meats but this chicken thigh skewer was on another level. I was pleasantly surprised by dinner here! Everything was really delicious, although I think it was overpriced. The cheese wontons were like mozz sticks, but wrapped in wonton skins instead of breaded. They came with a tasty spicy cod roe mayo dip. The unagi was pretty standard, as were the momo (thigh) and kawa (skin). I didn't like the skin as much as I usually do, but I'm not sure why - it was a little more oily, maybe? We got two orders of the sausage because they were so good. You can't really get sausage wrong, but YUM. I enjoyed the hotate eringi (scallop and king oyster mushroom) but my fiancé didn't think it was anything special. We were still a little hungry, so we got the maguro zuke cold appetizer at the end. The server was very welcoming, professional and polite throughout pur visit. I was impressed with the server's patience and grateful for their guidance because we did not know the menu, but he took time to explain it all to us. At first, I forgot to inform him of my food allergy to sesame oil, but when he learned about it, he took immediate steps, and re-assured me that I would not have to worry. I really love the concept where you can order single skewers for a lower price. This allowed us to try a lot of different skewers. We mostly got chicken and pork, several mushroom ones, and a unique sweet and spicy karaage. The Momo (chicken thigh) was my favorite. Everything else was very juicy and fatty but I think the richness overshadowed the taste of each individual sauce/marinade and they all tasted very similar. The whole place reminded me of Japan and they have a "open kitchen" for the yakitoris, so you can watch the cooks prepare your food on the grill! Thank you Yakitori Totto for coming to Boston so that I now don't have to drive all the way to New York! The first time that I had yakitori, Japanese skewered chicken meats, was at Yakitori Totto in New York. It was also my first time in New York so there were plenty of new dining experiences during that trip. I do however remember one of my most memorable dining experience was dining at Yakitori Totto. At their first establishment in New York, I remembered every morsel of food was so delicious as the skewered were cooked over white charcoal. Their second location in Boston, or, Somerville I should say is located at Assembly Row. It is not to be confused or associated with the Totto Ramen, another Japanese restaurant that has been at Assembly Row since the beginning. The two serves a completely different menu and are almost night and day. Yakitori Totto is the real deal Japanese restaurant here of the two. It is not your typical Japanese sushi or ramen restaurant that most are accustomed to. It is more street food, Japanese tapas if you had to associate it to something. The menu is made up of various skewered meats with lots of chicken parts and with a few pork, beef, lamb, seafood, vegetarian items. If you are exploring the menu for the first time, try the chicken thigh meat, the chicken meatball, stuffed peppers, the shishito peppers, and the chicken kaarage. The chicken kaarage here is very lightly battered, I would say it's more a dusting than a batter. The chicken skin was not as good as I remembered it to be but all the other items were delicious as I recalled. If you are more adventurous, try the liver and other offals/organ meats. The tako wasa is an acquired taste due to the raw slimy octopus texture. For beer, you can't go wrong with either the Asahi draft or the Sapporo. The Makku Mango rice beer is more Korean and needs to be shaken up and is on the sweeter side. I love Korean rice beer so I couldn't pass up on it but I recommend the Asahi or Sapporo as it goes better with the food. You can opt for warm sake which is more on the dry side. For kids, I recommend the ramune soda drinks. They don't have a lot of flavor choices, only original. The Somerville location was announced by Assembly Row as a 2021 opening and on Eater Boston but somehow I had forgotten until yesterday when I was searching Yelp for new yakitori restaurants in Boston. I found two more to add to my bucket list. Always something new happening in Boston these days on the culinary scene. The restaurant has not been opened too long and they still do not have a waiting system established aside from walk-in and a paper pencil waitlist. It is basically walk-in only as they don't even pick up their phone. You may end up standing at the door with a bunch of people for a good 15 minutes or longer before someone walk up to ask how many people is in your party. It is a stay and wait with no phone call system. You basically have to hang around until a table becomes available at least for now. There is also an all party must be present rule before they can seat you. It is an honor system where because they do not keep track of who came in first and just assume the people closest to the door were there first type situation. You will have to politely tell them you came in before the group that pushed their way to the front of the door though you had politely been waiting off to the side for awhile now. Speak up or forever hold your peace. You have been warned. We went on a Saturday night at 8 pm and with a party of eight, half kids, and the tab came to $270 before tip. We sat outside, thankfully, because the kids were restless since it was nearing their bedtime and this night out in town filled them with excitement. Instead of sitting well behaved in their chairs, like they ever did this, all they wanted to do was to go to the nearby park and/or skip straight to having ice cream at the nearby JP Licks. Our waiter was super attentive and super friendly. The food came out very quickly and all were delicious, no complaints. All drinks came out without reminders. All of the children were full but still had room for desserts thanks to the two salmon onigiri orders and two extra bowls of rice order. Overall, great dining experience though I would love to just come back without the kids. I would rather hang out with just my best friend and dine inside the restaurant away from the elements and by the bar seating area where the cooking action was taking place and talk about the kids instead of talking to them. I've been wanting to try this place for a while, and my experience was a mixed bag. If I hadn't gotten two specific dishes, I definitely would have left a lower rating. Let's start with the good. The tako wasabi (raw octopus, $9) was delicious. I've only had this once before, as a prepared food from a Japanese grocery store, and this blew that one out of the water. The seasoning was savory and tingly, and the octopus was fresh and chewy with a bite. I would absolutely get this again. Thank you to the reviewer who raved about it! The scallop oyster mushroom skewer ($7) was great -- both the mushroom and scallop were perfectly cooked, the mushroom was juicy, and the seasoning was mild but delicious. A perfect pairing. Would definitely recommend. The karaage ($9) was rather bland, nothing special. It was fairly crispy but felt a bit oily. There are definitely many better karaages in the Camberville area. The chicken thigh skewer (momo, $4) was pretty much what you would expect. The yakitori sauce is a bit too sweet and one-note for my tastes. The chicken was fairly tender with a slight grilled flavor. The harami skirt steak skewer ($6) was about the same as the chicken thigh -- meat was fine, sauce is too sweet. Would not get again. Finally, the shishito tsukune skewer was quite disappointing. It was dripping in juice, but not from the dry meatballs. I suppose it was again way too much yakitori sauce. Very forgettable. In summary, I would shy away from anything that has yakitori sauce and go for the seafood options. Honestly, I do still think about both the tako wasabi and the scallop oyster mushroom skewers fairly regularly so I might just go back for those... read more

I had no idea this place was opening until I passed by here coincidentally on their first day of soft opening. Decided to try it out since it's day 1! The host warned us that not everything on the menu is available which seems reasonable. For appetizer, we ordered the pork belly with soy sauce and dashi. For yakitori we ordered their Momo (Thigh), Tebasaki (Wings), Harami, short rib and Combo Mambo. Starting off with the pork belly appetizer, it was tender and flavorful...so tender that you can cut it with a spoon! The beef skewers were alright, not as tender as I expected; maybe the wagyu would be better? The chicken though, is the star of the show! Both the wings and thigh was super juicy and tender! Very flavorful with the yakitori sauce. I just wish they had the chicken skin which is their popular item! All in all, definitely one of the closest yakitori place to the ones I've had in Japan....for the chicken anyways. Will definitely come back when they have their full menu. Minor disappointment in kawa as it's not as crispy as I'd liked at the center of the skewer. Unagi was also cooked somewhat unevenly. Some were overcooked, while some were slightly under but largely on point. Service/wait-time/cleanliness (2/2): Stellar service and cleanliness. We were politely brought in and served even though they were in their last hour. Wait-time was also relatively quick. Price (0.5/1): Even if their food and service was stellar, the price is still on the expensive side unfortunately. Stumbled across this place while walking around Assembly Row and was pleasantly surprised because we love yakitori! This is the second location with the first one established in New York in 2003. We walked in around 5:30 and there were already a couple of tables filled up, but it didn't really get too busy until 6:30-7. When we first walked in, the waitress let us know that they only had limited items. However, it seemed it be almost half the menu that was out (no beef items, soft knee bone, shiitake mushroom, combo mambo). We'll definitely have to come back and try to get some of those. With the sake, an appetizer, ~10 yakitori and dessert, we paid around $85 with tax and tip included. We didn't try any of the bowls or noodle dishes. Dishes we loved were the annin tofu dessert, the negi pon and the chicken hatsu. What kept this place from getting a 5 star is the level of saltiness. I didn't care for the garlic beef (comes with the white garlic sauce on it). I really enjoyed the nankotsu (soft chicken bone), but it's not everyone's cup of tea since it's primarily texture! The interior and decoration makes the place look really nice, they also have an outdoor dining area if you fancy being seen by people walking past you while your gobbling down your food like a starving baby bird. When we first walked in, we were pretty much ignored for the first 5-10 minutes. Oh my god this was delicious. The decor is really cute and minimalist. There's outdoor seating, but we sat inside and it was pretty well-distanced. The miso soup was good although standard, but the starter salad was amazing. Idk what sauce it was- I know other places typically do a kewpie mayo-based dressing- but this stuff was uniquely good. Like I would've licked the bowl if it were socially acceptable. I ordered the oyakodon, and it came out fast, fresh, and so freaking good. Generous portion and with the perfect ratio of chicken, onion, and egg. (I did get a super fatty piece of chicken, but it's nbd given the rest of the dish.) There were some pickles and seaweed for garnish, which helped freshen up the dish. The sauce was sweet but not too sweet. There was a little too much rice, but that's to be expected given restaurant portions. Plus, the sauce was good enough that finishing up the rice wasn't a problem. The yakitori on the yakitori don was also expertly cooked. It was fully grilled nicely yet somehow super juicy and tender. It basically melted in my mouth ahhhh!!
