This is an awesome Japanese restaurant located on Atlantic Ave in Ventnor, NJ & I was surprised it wasn't busier when I went, because I absolutely loved it! I had the Trio Toro appetizer which had tuna, yellowtail, & salmon sashimi in a delicious truffle ponzu sauce. That was my favorite part of the meal, but the rolls I had were also very flavorful & most importantly, super FRESH! Everything on the sushi menu ranged from $5 to $19 so you know you're getting a great value here with great quality! I tried a salmon hand roll & Spicy Salmon Roll for $5.50 each, the Crazy Joel roll for $18, & the Three Stooges roll for $14. The fish to rice ratio in the rolls were awesome & I'll definitely be back to try more. It's BYOB & they're open daily with online ordering available. They have a huge menu of sushi options as well as Bento Boxes, Asian Fusion entrees, Japanese & Thai Curries, Noodles, Fried Rice, Soups, Salads, & other Appetizers. Yama used to be the best. I ordered age tofu as an appetizer expecting firm tofu. The tofu was runny and curdy with a thin coating. The ginger/scallion sauce was tasteless. Also tasteless was the spicy tuna roll. It had no taste. My companion had tofu teriyaki and the sauce provided some flavor. She also got sweet potato sushi and, with eyes closed, could not tell the difference between the tuna sushi and the potato sushi. We had no drinks . We split the bill which was $60 with tip. Way too expensive for what we had. It needs to go back to the "Old Yama." Miyako will be my new sushi restaurant until then. read more

My friends and I came here for a late lunch on a weekday and all opted for the lunch special. Due to us coming at an off hour, service was great and waitresses checked in on us constantly. I got the sashimi and sushi combo. I was pleasantly surprised that all of the sashimi pieces were thick and meaty. I feel like some places try to skimp on the sashimi. The fish was very fresh, my favorite was the salmon. If I lived near here I would definitely become a regular haha. read more

Yama!!! Wow! What a fantastic local sushi spot along the jersey shore! Not pictured were the edamame, miso soups, garden salad, and curry soup that we ordered as appetizers. All of them were delicious. Then out came the party tray for 3 and honestly the best decision to get. This had a little bit of everything from sashimi, to hand rolls and more. It's all a chefs choice but they chose very well for us. I think there were 80+ pieces on the tray and we finished nearly all of it. We have been loyal Yama diners since it opened; tonight we had the most disappointing food experience of any of our meals. Our dinner consisted of the Premium Sashimi Trio and a roll as our primary dishes. The sashimi slices were half the thickness of what has been served in the past and the quality of the tuna seemed off (sliced from the loin portion?). We inquired why our $36 PREMIUM sashimi was served without a bowl of sushi rice and was told that rice is now included with the DELUXE sashimi only, whereupon we requested an a la carte order of rice. The roll was offered with a soy wrapper, but we requested a standard green seaweed wrapper instead. For our decidedly mediocre meal we were charged menu prices, plus $3.50 for the rice and $2.00 for the wrapper substitution. Based on our experience tonight, we see a restaurant in decline, looking to save money by diminishing quality and quantity, as well as adding surcharges where inappropriate. No issues with service, but cavalier attitude when we questioned the aforementioned. read more

Sashimi is off the charts!!!! Try the sweet shrimp sashimi, fricking delicious. Tonight my wife and I started with a custom soft shell crab under the rainbow.... A crispy soft shell crab stuffed into a rainbow roll...unbelievable!! Next the chef prepared Hamachi belly with ponzu and jalapeño(pictured below) Delicious!! Then we had the sashimi Dinner, Fresh Blue fin otoro, Salmon belly, hamachi, fresh fluke and sweet shrimp sashimi with flash fried shrimp heads that were was pulled from the ocean the day before we enjoyed it. They have a full sushi bar an awesome selection of gourmet cooked items, plenty of tables and good service with a great vibe and outdoor seating. The portions are strong and prices are right in line, Great value and the food is amazingly fresh and professionally prepared. Tasty meals (4 to be exact) over the past week at this great Ventnor restaurant. Was very busy on Friday and Saturday summer evenings and we chose to sit outside since the weather was so beautiful and due to having brought our furry little boy as well. Now to the food- we had sushi combination dinners including rolls such as spicy tuna, spicy salmon, eel and avocado, and California. We also sampled many appetizers including Gyoza, Thai edamame, shrimp shumei, and soups. All the food was fresh and Delicious! And the prices are very fair considering the location, season, and copious amounts of food. The waiters and waitresses were very kind, friendly, and extremely attentive. We became new regulars! What a great way to celebrate the 4th of July! Yama is a shore favorite of mine and many of my friends - the Yama Mamas! It's always the best spot to grab a tasty sushi dinner, while sipping on your BYOB wine. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The service is hit or miss - sometimes it's really great, and other times it takes too long to get ahold of your server or your food. It's a gamble you have to take. The food though... the food at this sushi joint is always enjoyable! The fish is always fresh and all the dishes are tasty. Before devouring some rolls, we had a seaweed salad, house salad, kani salad, and the spicy tuna pizza. The SEAWEED & HOUSE SALADS were your standard - nothing to note. The KANI SALAD lacked a kick - it was bland and I had to ask for some sriracha to help turn the dish up. The SPICY TUNA PIZZA is a fun dish to share amongst soosh lovers - the rice "crust" has the perfect texture combo of chewy and crispy, and it's topped with a heaping layer of a spicy tuna mixture, and then some seaweed salad. Amazing! For sushi, I like to stick to basic rolls. The SPICY TUNA and SALMON AVOCADO rolls were both divine! Super fresh and just a thin layer of rice - the perfect combo! Everyone else indulged in some of the ~crazier rolls~ and everyone had raving reviews. One was even shaped like a heart! (The lovers roll maybe?). Yama is a shore establishment. The food was decent, the prices are so cheap you can't really expect Michelin star food. The ambiance is very modern and the staff speaks enough English for anyone to be able to be served/order. Pros - food is decent(most of the fish were super fresh), price is great ($54 for the loveboat for 2.. see my picture... that is a BARGAIN), easy street parking, they also have their own lot (The lot is about 2 stores before hand..which is a bit confusing.. we didn't see any signage for the lot until we had passed it.) Cons - they didn't really know their menu all too well.. kept going to the sushi chef to ask questions.. and their main chef wasn't in so they were making phone calls to ask, they didn't have the lights on for us.. i mean it was 3pm so it wasn't dark.. but still.. , towards the end of our meal they kept trying to clean our table.. even though we clearly had lots of food left.. we were the only customers and they weren't closing anytime soon.. read more

I don't know what to say. This used to be one of our go to places. We have been coming for years and during the pandemic, we did take out. Problem 1) it took over an hour for our food to arrive after we ordered. There were at least 4 tables of customers who received their food and left well before we got served. Problem #2. My husband ordered bento box B but what came was entirely different and arrived cold. Upon looking at the menu now The online menu was updated to indicated what my husband ended up getting, but the paper menus did not reflect the change. Between the diners and the online orders, the staff seems overwhelmed. After we left, those sitting outside said they have never had such a bad experience. As I said, we have been coming for years and this experience was so disappointing. No apology. read more

I have a disdain crab stick, cream cheese or crab meat plus an over use of spicy tuna because we all know the spicy tuna is a way to use small remnants of tuna chopped up. This is the absolute best sushi restaurant in South Jersey. My fiance and I have tried nearly every sushi place and no compare to Yama. The service is always wonderful when we go. We usually always order the same thing but anything we have tried we have always loved. For appetizers I highly recommend Sushi Pizza... wasabi shumai is also really good. Favorite rolls are (#1) GODZILLA, Spider Roll, Hot Lovers Roll (which is pink) and the lobster roll. If you come for dinner try the crispy duck. read more

We have been going here since the day they opened and everything is still amazing. I kind of miss the cozy atmosphere they originally had but the chic new look is very nice! Servers are always really nice, Jessica is my favorite. She is so sweet! In the summer they get packed, so service can be a little slower but I think that's understandable. Some things I recommend: triple toro carpaccio ($$$ but amazing), Godzilla roll, spicy scallop roll, baby octopus salad... The list goes on and on. They have a lot of specials too, such as the amazing roll (which was super amazing!). So get a bottle of wine and head over! Or call in and get something to go, then stop at the liquor store across the street for a bottle of wine! read more
