Great sushi at manhattan prices with a hefty dose of aggro NY/NJ/Philadelphia attitude on the part of the clientele. The price tag for rolls ($13-$15) was a tad bit of turn off, but given the creativity of the rolls, it is well worth it. Go with the Godzilla roll! The spicy tuna anything is pretty good.They also carry Ramune soda (japanese soda sealed with a marble) that IS MY FAVORITE beverage of all time. It is also a BYOB place, and there are plenty of liqour stores around to pick up a bottle of saki or wine, and take to your table. There have been a couple of negative things said about the service. Actually seeing the how the clientele acts and how the service is very kind and accomodating, I have to speak up for the staff. I have never seen so many impatient and rude people try to pick fights with staff before. Perhaps they are not the best at arranging tables and accomodating large crowds in this small restaurant. Sometimes you have to repeat your order, but they try to clarify things. There might be a longer wait than usual. So you had to wait for a table for 10 minutes, that's no reason to yell at a host. A table of seated table of eight had to wait for twenty minutes for their food. Let's keep in mind they ordered tons of food that takes time to prepare, got their appetizers and were beligerently loud in their drunken conversation the whole time. Not only did they give the waitress an earful, who was very apologetic, they stiffed her. I watched an ordinarily polite girl who worked her butt off, slam down the check at the bar after clearing the table. Chill the heck out people, you're at the beach. This was my first time in Atlantic City, and you definitely have me believing that neighboring cities that I usually love ship their douchebags off to the shore in summer. Today was my second time here. I couldn't wait to come back. The first time we sat at a table and it was great. I sat at the sushi bar this time and man do I regret it. Fish cooler was a complete mess. The containers were all disheveled and mostly empty. It looked like they left everything as is after the previous evenings rush and didn't bother to clean up after or to prepare for opening. The guys behind the sushi bar were just kids that unfortunately lack the pride and work ethic associated with real Sushi chefs. I was so tempted to walk out but remained and tried to enjoy my lunch but it just wasn't possible staring at that cooler. The toaster oven they use looked as if it has never been cleaned. Yama remains consistently top-notch. While service remains spotty, the staff is friendly and tries hard to please. My fellow diners enjoyed the rock shrimp, rainbow roll, and chicken teriyaki. Because this restaurant got decent reviews, we decided to swing by and try the lunch sushi deal. While the deal was great, the sushi was not. I got the sweet potato, veggie, and AAC roll. The AAC roll was not good. The avocado was mushy which made it look unappealing and taste less than fine. The sweet potato roll was small, but ok. The veggie roll was the worst I've had. My husband got the spicy yellow tail roll, Philadelphia roll, and a tuna roll. He was also unhappy with his meal. The yellow tail was the best, but still pretty poor. The lunch deal came with miso soup and salad. The soup looked odd, so I did not even taste it. While the salad had nice greens, it was overdressed and watery, which signified wet greens. This place is one of the best Japanese Fusion Places in South Jersey. Their lunch specials prices are fantastic. The taste is always consistent, delicious, and food is really fresh. The service is getting better and better every time I go because of the new management. The owner is great, he works along side his employees on almost every night. In the summers they are really busy and have been for years. There's a Japanese Steak house across from but considering every factor from food, price, service, Yama is better so it is worth the wait. If this is your first time and you have no idea what to get, definitely try the Godzilla Roll (Perfect for first time sushi-ers, and for those who don't really like eating sashimi) Scattie Salmon ( $20 but is good if you are looking to share, the sauce is this miso mixture, comes with grilled asparagus ) If you come with 4 people and are looking to share something together try their beef/chicken/shrimp fried rice! can't go wrong with edamame for appetizers! and Miso soup and salad come with most meals! If you from LA or New York City, you might find the sushi to be decent to good. For the Atlantic City area this place is very good to excellent considering our area doesn't really have any decent sushi places. The service was very professional,courteous and attentive. This restaurant is a little all over the place, so I broke my review into categories: 5 Stars for Food - Godzilla roll was delicious -Try the Spicy Thai Edamame instead of the regular kind, they were amazing, though SUPER spicy -Highly recommend the tempura appetizer -All of the food is incredibly fresh, but priced very reasonably. - The bill for 6 people to each get several dishes was only $100 4 Stars for Service - The waitress was definitely overworked but was doing her best. - She accommodated our request for both wine and champagne glasses, as we were celebrating a friend's birthday (though we had to ask twice). - Towards the end of the evening, the head chef circulated to all of the tables, apologizing for the delays in the service and checking in to see if anyone needed anything further. 3 Stars for Ambiance -Yama's was MOBBED for the Friday night of MDW. Extra folding chairs and tables were brought in, which clashed with the existing decor and cluttered up the place. -They were definitely understaffed, because the floors and tables weren't getting cleaned, so the place looked a little dingy. Father's Day dinner and not impressed. Living here in South Jersey, there's a sushi Japanese restaurant in almost every strip center. I live 1 mile from Asian Chef (best around) and 5 minutes from Chulicious, so Yama was a big disappointment for me, both with service and food quality. Yama is a decent sushi restaurant. The raw fish is very fresh and tasty. I ordered one of their special rolls and it was fantastic, but you can't order much more than that because it's so expensive. I came here with my company for a goodbye party of 16 people. The entire meal I felt as though we were being rushed out. Our store had an issue that evening, so 6 of our party members were running about fifteen minutes late; our meal was supposed to start at 8:30. At 8:40 our waitress "Mindy" told us that we could not wait any longer and HAD to start ordering. When we finally did order it was like we were being questioned by the police. Our waitress would ask us our order by saying "You will order now!". We really got some nasty attitude from this waitress. One of my favorite moments of the evening was when Mindy told us that the restaurant closed at 10 so we really needed to hurry up. Luckily for us, we were able to point out the sign plainly in front of her said "Open Tuesdays until 10:30PM". Ventnor is not a large place. However, it is home to Yama Fusion Japanese, self proclaimed "best sushi in town". I can't verify that proclamation because I haven't tried the two other sushi places in Ventnor. What I will say is that they do serve good sushi at fairly reasonable "sushi prices" The wait staff was very helpful and attentive. Micro bits of fish in the rolls which are also tiny and overpriced. Decent atmosphere, nice service, but once was enough for us. Will not be going back. The clear soup had fishy flavor and the dried mushrooms in it were too hard. The wonton soup is tasty with a good broth and lots of bits and bobs of seaweed, mushrooms etc. The sushi was small and not exactly fresh, kinda dried out looking. The salad dressing is not fresh, tasted commercial just like the eel sauce. I assume the fish is fresher during the season, I would have to say that the sushi for 2 was a disappointment in terms of variety, value, and freshness. They were allowing a young boy to train at serving maybe 12 years old, and while cute, he yells at the customers. I think silent shadow service until he gets his sea legs would be best because people can have yelling kids at home and go out for a slightly different experience. After all, this is not a food stall or truck, but a sit-down dinner. Rather than constantly apologizing for him, train him silently to take orders as you do too. Shadow, shadow, shadow. The second I took the first spoonful of tom yam soup I thought "wow, this place deserves 5 stars." The soup was hot, seasoned to perfection, though the number of shrimp was not so great(only 2). When I took my first bite of sushi I confirmed that thought. Sushi were fresh and tasted very good. However, what got me concerned was an extremely upset stomach that I experienced about 20 minutes after finishing the meal! I had major stomach pains. Nobody else who had sushi experienced anything similar. So I am just assuming that either the upset stomach was due to Tom Yum that I finished all on my own or due to stress. Mind you, I usually don't have stomach problems unless the food is spoiled. I don't want to arrive to any assumptions because I really enjoyed everything that we ordered and everybody else who joined us during that meal haven't experienced any problems. I give this place the benefit of the doubt, and thus I didn't give it anything less than 4. I couldn't bring myself to giving it 5 stars because my stomach was upset right after the meal, and because I felt like the prices were kinda steep. I went to Yama for my birthday this past Sunday night and it was a terrible experience. There were two very rowdy tables that took up half of the restaurant and were very inappropriate. Not only were they screaming during our entire meal but on multiple occasions they stood up on chairs and took their shirts and pants (yes pants) off. When our table asked to get the meal quickly so we could leave it took another 30+ minutes. There were only two of us and we each only had one roll. These should have taken 5 minutes to make considering the circumstances. The other tables at the restaurant were also very upset with the rowdiness and noise from the two big parties. Multiple people talked to their waitress and I saw someone talking with the manager. When I asked to speak to the manager as well I was told he had already left. This was outrageous considering he knew what was happening in the restaurant...why would he leave during the peak hour of the night with so much commotion going on? I asked the waitress if we would get a discount for my birthday meal being ruined and she insisted that she couldn't do anything because she wasn't a manager but that she would bring us dessert. We told her multiple times that we didn't want dessert but we would rather have a discount and instead of listening to us, she brought us desert with no discount. This is extremely disappointing since I live practically across the street from this place and had such a bad experience that I will never be going back. I would assume that anyone else there on Sunday night (that wasn't in one of those two parties) feels exactly the same. read more
