I'm from Arlington and have had my share of stand out sushi, so you could imagine my surprise when I stumbled across Yamafuji out in Front Royal and discovered that they could totally hold their own against the DC, NoVA sushi joints. Tried YamaFuji yesterday for the first time and was seriously disappointed. I should have heeded the warnings from other Yelpers. Apparently the best thing the restaurant has to offer is the sushi buffet. We ordered to go and by the time we got home realized we were missing several items. There was an orange roll on special that sounded amazing, after being charged for it, I was ticked that it wasn't in my bag. I also didn't receive the Cali roll or gyoza that were supposed to be part of my Yama box. I realize these infractions may not seem enough for one star but this wasn't the extent of the issues. After waiting more than 30 minutes for my order in a dining area that was mostly people getting the sushi bar, the kitchen should have been able to get out teriyaki chicken and a Yama box sooner. Speaking of chicken, my husband noticed that the chicken, while tasty was definitely processed. And the miso soup was very bland. Back to the missing items. I called to discuss the issue, basically expecting an offer to make it right next time. Instead what I got waa an argument that there weren't Cali rolls in the Yama box. The man conceded after I pointed out the entry on the menu. He continued to argue that it wasn't his fault that the items were missing. In the end, my family who generally eats sushi and/or Japanese once a week won't be back. read more

Trust me. They don't serve you clean and nice food. The waiters and waitresses are not kind. They got some attitudes toward to customers. They served you something you cant even drink and eat. People go because there is no japanese restaurant other than that and they know it. They treated me and my other friends like kiddos. Sometimes they don't even take credit cards. They are just like whatever. I complained about the food, not willing to listen at all. I would rather go to mcdonalds. read more

We rolled into front royal at 9:05 on a Sunday night. Everything else was closed, but luckily for us we took a wrong turn searching for main st and stumbled upon Yamafuji. The staff was extremely friendly despite the late hour. Kang, our waiter, was very funny and enjoyable to converse with. Saketinis were delicious, sushi was amazingly fresh (chef even sent us a complimentary roll), beef bulgogi box was fantastic. Our favorite, though, was the teriyaki salmon - could not get enough! We were in town as tourists for a few nights. This is a very nice sushi restaurant but it is by no stretch of the imagination a 5 star place to eat, no offense. It's fine but nothing shines. We asked for a saki and a beer and they were out of both. The server was nice and suggested two others which were great. The salad and miso is standard fare for such sushi places, but just lettuce leaves and 3-4 shaves of carrot. The food was fine but nothing stands out. If you are in Front Royal, definitely try this place out if you want sushi but don't expect 5 stars. It's a nice place with ok food and ok service. read more

My favorite place to eat here in Front Royal, I've eaten there 2-3 times a month since I moved here in August. The staff is great and the food is awesome. I never thought I'd like sushi and had it a couple times before, but this place changed my mind. I can't get enough. Service: 5/5 Food: 2/5 Ordered the unadon and yama ramyun. The eel and rice was okay, rice needed to be warmer and portion was on the small side for $18. You can get a better deal in DC considering that DC is also more rent expensive. Ramyun or ramen was a joke. It was described as delicious Japanese noodle in beef soup. Let's just say when I tasted it, it was literally the Shin ramyun by Nongshim, a type of Korean packaged ramen that can get for a dollar a pack. I know because I've had it so many times and I know the taste of that ramen like the back of my hand. For $10.95, they served you a pack of $1 ramen with an egg, some broccoli, onions and bean sprouts. Where is the beef broth?! I am surprised they even dared to put something like that on the menu but perhaps it's my fault too for not ordering sushi which is where I guess the good reviews came from for this place. I would've at least expected some decent kitchen dishes aside from the sushi, I guess not. read more

Ok, here's the scoop on YamaFuji.... Whenever we go we LOVE the food and whenever we think about going, and end up going, it's ALWAYS better than we remember it tasting. We've been eating here for 1 yr and they always impress us! Great staff and the chef's are very nice. :) Great for kids esp, on sunday's they eat free till 3 or 4 pm. Our girls love it too. It's our favorite, that's for sure! read more

What an excellent Japanese restaurant! We went for dinner in a group of 14 (fairly picky diners) and everyone was amazed at the high quality food, diverse menu, and generous portions. Check out the box combinations: they were super and cost only $13 or so. This restaurant's meals could hold their own in the DC metro area, at less than 1/2 the cost. Save room for green tea ice cream or mochi ball (ice cream). read more

I have been eating at this place the entire time I've lived in Front Royal. The sushi is always amazing. However, the last order I placed for delivery ended up very disappointing. The driver did not bring any cash for change with them. I had also mentioned while placing the order to bring change. Great! Stopped by for lunch en route to work in the city and was very pleased. Reasonable prices, great service, but most importantly very good sushi... I lived in Brooklyn for about ten years, so I don't settle for 'grocery store grade' sushi, and this was quite good. No complaints here, very fresh and good sushi. We had a little bit of everything; miso soup, some sashimi, an eel roll and a the bubogi bento box. The best was the toro (fatty tuna). Not a lot of places have this in stock and it was so tender and fresh. read more

After seeing several positive reviews about this place, SO and I decided to check this place out. We came at about 8:45 P.M. on a Sunday night and they had just closed down/cleaned up the all-you-can-eat sushi buffet, which was extremely disappointing since that is the reason we came (though it seemed small from the remnants we saw). We were the only ones in the restaurant and it was nice and quiet. We ordered the sashimi platter as well as a tempura salmon roll on the side with green tea mochi ice cream for dessert. The platter came with a standard salad and miso soup, which was nice. The fish was fresh and nicely plated, but was not the best quality I have ever had and nothing to write home about. Similarly, the tempura salmon roll, while interesting, was standard. The mochi ice cream was delicious, but probably packaged (not that I am complaining). Overall, decent place, but nothing amazingly special or unique. read more

Food and service are pretty good. Not 5 sushi but not bad for the area. The sushi chef got caught up making rolls for the buffet. It took a while for my food to arrive. Had dinner with my family on New Years Eve. The restaurant was clean. The service was prompt. The food was delicious. My husband and son love sushi I mean LOVE sushi. So they are very particular. Delicious! Ordered the teriyaki chicken bowl for my 9 yr old daughter - she devoured all but the fried tempura! The adult dinner sized chicken teriyaki was perfect. 2 small chicken breasts sliced thin in a very tasty sauce served with a small side of brown rice (approx 1/2 cup). Wasn't crazy about the miso soup, but everything else (including the sushi chef brining us a plate of sushi on the house for us to try) made up for it! read more

While hanging out with a friend in Front Royal we had the craving for sushi and were a little hesitant to try a random place so far away from the major city for fear of awful sushi but we trusted yelp and it found this place for us. I ordered the sushi platter and my friend ordered a bunch of rolls and we shared each others meal and were surprised to find such tasty sushi in the middle of no where. She never mentioned the specials, charged us for items we didn't order and was generally surly, so we nick named her, "Miss Sunshine. While this wasn't the best sushi I've ever had, the service was excellent and the owner made the sushi in front of our eyes himself, even though we had ordered by phone 30 minutes before we drove through town en route to Connecticut from Charlottesville.
