Overall, really pleasantly surprised by Yamato. The food was excellent. The filet hibachi was really flavorful and tender. And the two rolls we ordered were great, especially the Sakura (the other was Sunset Blvd -- still good). The only knock on this place is the service. Our waitress worked hard, but we saw four other employees doing basically nothing. So, it was kind of slow. And the shrimp tempura we ordered came out as veggie tempura. I have to say, I'm pleased to know there's a great little sushi place in Union! We visited with a group of 10 to celebrate a birthday. They did take reservations, which was great! The staff was friendly and helpful with questions our group had. The place is clean and pleasantly decorated. I ordered sushi: the Pink Lady roll and a shrimp avocado roll -- both were delicious, and I love how the Pink Lady roll was presented in the shape of hearts. The ambience out of the way feels like a Japanese Chinese place it is so good and then you order the food the Missouri world is just peak and it's crunchy beautiful and the service is really good too nice people the only problem in my opinion is cuz there's a child in the back It's a really good place in general I recommend it to anyone I give it a 9 out of 10 and also here's a quick story once I was in here boom I walk in I get greeted immediately which is an extra point for customer service and I get my food ordered and around 2 minutes in they have my drinks and some of the wasabi and one plate of sushi already and 1 minute later boom we have all of our food And everyone was so respectful read more

This is a very red restaurant. Lots of red decor. We arrived at 6:30 on a Saturday and were seated right away. The place was pretty busy. Each table has the standard soy sauce but also had a bottle of yum yum sauce which was a nice surprise. Our waiter was friendly and always checked in at the perfect time. Wish they had a 0 star option. Food was disgusting! Ordered chicken yaki soba and it looked and tasted nothing like yaki soba. Noodles were more like spaghetti noodles and the chicken was bone dry with almost no flavor. Yakitori chicken was also disgusting, bone dry again and more like a ketchup sauce than anything. We started with Lobster Rangoon, which were very good. On to the main dish... My wife ordered the shrimp and scallop combination and we had dynamite roll, Yamato roll, California and Philadelphia rolls. We ate at Yamato tonight after a friend suggested it. We were very happy with our whole experience. We ordered a few different rolls and lobster rangoon. They were each delicious and a generous serving. The don't have a liqour license but allowed us to bring in beer or wine. Really nice owners, wife is Front-of-House...greeting customers, taking phone orders, cashing out...she really works hard. Husband...cooks and runs the kitchen. We have the same male waiter every time and we always receive exceptional service. Unfortunately over the last 2yrs the wait-time for food, cleanliness of the rest., and hot food handling hygiene has taken a turn for the worse. We've never had a bad Sushi item but no matter what day of the wk we dine-in we have to wait a LONG TIME. Why? 21Apr we were the only couple in the rest., we arrived at 5:45 PM...we still waited 35min for our 3 orders of Sushi. 12May, there were 2 sm tables in the rest. before us...we waited 50min for 3 orders of Sushi. Last Nov, we had another couple with us, we waited over 1hr, 15min and none of our food came out together. I did try to talk to the wife but she really didn't listen and just said, "we have a lot of to-go orders." It appears that TO-GO orders take precedent over anyone dining in. We are captive and can't really cancel our order (we're hungry) and it is not feasible to take it to-go because we drive a 58mi round-trip to enjoy the food. I had horrible GI issues after eating their Soba and Mango salad, not once but twice. AND...those cardboard boxes everywhere, taking up booths...what's up with that? how unsightly. Not sanitary at all, they will invite bugs, mice, rats... perhaps recycling? can you put them somewhere else while you wait for pick-up? The carpet is getting dirtier and dirtier...gross, it kind of SMELLS. It makes me wonder how clean the kitchen is. We really appreciate this rest. but these issues are becoming hard to ignore. read more
