Food is great. I go back often but the poor rating is due to the reservation system Made a reservation a week in advance on Yelp for 11:45am on a Sunday. Got there and checked in and saw the hostess write down my name on paper. Thought it was weird but whatever -- she told me she'd call me by name. There appears to be multiple waiting lists, one by in person and another through a different app. 20 mins passed by and she said our table still isn't ready. 30-45 mins passed by and still not sat down. I ask what's going on and she said it's due to graduations but it's late June? It's apparent that when I had checked in for my apparent reservation that I was really just added to the wait list along side anyone else who checked in person. We had a delightful morning brunch at Dim Sum before heading to vote in the Peruvian elections. Our friends Kim and Roberto joined us, and we had reservations for 11:45 am. We placed our orders and settled in to wait for our dishes. As we chatted and shared stories, we noticed that the table behind us was receiving their orders and sitting down about 10 minutes after we did. We started to see plates arriving for other tables, prompting us to investigate the status of our food. Upon checking, we discovered that our order had been lost. After waiting for half an hour, we were informed that they had misplaced it. Consequently, we had to place our order again. Let's dive into the details of our dishes: - Roasted Duck Burrito: The burrito lacked substantial duck meat, and the wrap was not warm as it should have been. - Shui Mai: This dish was consistent with the taste of other Shui Mai we've had. - Chicken Feet with Black Bean Sauce: Regrettably, we never received this dish. - Har Gaw: This was the last dish served us. Koi palace is the go to dim sum spot when you don't know where else to go. The prices haven't changed a lot, making a formerly most expensive dim sum spot into an average priced dim sum spot. The interior continues to provide an old school atmosphere with bustling ambiance, a koi fish pond (beloved by the children), large tables for big families and fish in tanks. The food is generally pretty good. Cantonese food is known more for balance, so even if you order their "Szechuan" dishes, there isn't a ton of spice. I'm a big fan on their XO sauce, so the XO pan fried rice rolls are my favorite. The green seaweed crunch shrimp rice roll is also quite good. We had a group of 15 here for Lunar New Year dinner on a Sunday - reservations were made by phone a few weeks in advance. They definitely squeeze the tables in tight! We were right up against a temporary wall (where my friend was accidentally pushing the wall back if she just scooted her chair back a little) and backed up against other tables. Their main parking lot can be very full, but we drove around the restaurant to a separate lot to the left of the building (if you are looking at the front door), with spots still intended for Koi Palace, and because it doesn't connect directly to the main lot, it was very empty. Came here to celebrate a big birthday and went with the banquet course for 10 people. While the food keg coming, I will say they served some unfamiliar foods. To start there was a shrimp ball and fruit salad which I was unfamiliar with but tasty. The highlight of the meal had to be the whole roast piggy, the chicken soup and the sakura shrimp noodles. The piggy was crispy and they served it with buns to make the perfect little bites. The chicken soup was boiled with herbs and other goodies making for a hearty and healthy blend. The taste was slightly herbal from the ginseng but sweet from the chicken. The noodles were also full of flavor! Since we were seated in a corner we did have good service but maybe wished our teapot was filled more often. However when prompted the staff was quick and attentive. However, the front window and fish tank at the entry needed cleaning and I felt something sticky when standing near the entrance. It was old carpet and goo on it. The Lazy Susan serving turntable was sticky when I turned it. Customers would be well served if the carpet is removed. It's too damaged to be cleaned/repaired. I like this place. This is a place that is in 'SF' but it won't gouge your wallet. Yet it's still got that canto flavor. The staff were very friendly and fast and took away whatever empty dishes we pointed out. The pace of the food came out quite fast tho the order seemed kind of random (got the crab claws after some of the other dishes like the lobster e fun). They also spoke canto when I asked about the sugared doughnuts. The vibe is always great! It's the same restaurant after how many years and yet it's still got a good enough to hold a wedding vibe. It's both a whole in the wall and yet it's got some really nice paintings and even a real mandarin orange tree? But the food is wonderful. The duck with the skin and the buns were great! I've been eating here for decades. Dim sum and dinners have always been a treat and wouldn't mind the 2 hour wait for dim sum. Last night, we celebrated Xmas dinner and was excited to dine here. We called to preorder (2) crispy fried chicken and put a $50 deposit down. Its one of our go-to dishes here and pre-ordering is required. What disgusted me was they gave our order away to another table. Say what?! They f'd up majorly! Unforgivable! No crispy fried chicken. However, they came back again and gave us 1 order of this instead. So confusing! Even one of the waiters was shocked that we had it. I would had 1/2 forgiven them but it didnt come topped with deeped fried shrimp chips, which has always been a guilty pleasure to eat with the chicken. Service was at its worst. Cold water came thirdway through our meal. White rice came halfway through our meal. We had to remind them several times. The fish maw soup waa not cooked right the maw had this bongee bouncy texture that felt like I was chewing on rubber bits. It was so disgusting that I couldn't even finish the soup. The big kicker was they totally forgot about our long life noodles. And to add injury to more injury, they did not deduct the $50 deposit we made and had to ask about it several times. The duck was flavorful and tasty, it paired really well with rice. Portions were not bad and we did have some leftovers. Service was good and they did check in on us. We had reservations here for a dinner on Sunday, walked in and were seated immediately, the place was packed as always, it's Koi Palace, everyone usually comes here for dinner. The Ambiance was as you expected, a bit noisy, a few birthdays, some family gatherings, and everything in between. The service was also a bit slower, not sure if they had some tables confused, but a few of our dishes were sitting on the table next to us for a while, might have been a bad hand off or a bit busy, but a few times that happened. I've been here a few times, and I'm not sure why, the food just didn't hit the mark as it used to. The soup was good, the honey walnut shrimp was on point, but the other items weren't as great as they were before. The meat was tender but felt a bit off; the seabass was great looking but just a smudge off flavor wise. It's been YEARS since I came to the Daly City location for dinner but we wanted to take my brother here for his birthday dinner. Before we dive into the food, let's talk service & ambiance. Things started off a bit rocky... we had a 7pm reservation and ended up waiting for an additional 30 minutes to finally get seated. This was for a Saturday night but dang... no one was really communicating with us (but won't focus on that too much since they were busy). We sat down around 7:30pm and safe to say we were definitely ready to EAT. Our server was very friendly and helpful, so he made the experience a lot better. Regarding ambiance, the location is definitely a bit older now. Fairly outdated and very loud but my family had fun for the most part. (Don't expect to be able to hear someone sitting on the opposite side of the table easily haha..) Food was pretty good! We tried different dishes (lots of veggies this time around) than what we usually go for. The dishes took a while to come out and came out pretty staggered - not sure if that was intentional but it felt a bit strange. Nonetheless, the food itself was good. - Abalone with truffle shavings & snow peas: yummy! Our most recent BDC celebration was here Saturday. Reservation at 1:30pm for party of five. Of their several tea houses I enjoy the dim sum here and at Dragon Beaux. My last visit was to celebrate my mother's table where we had two tables in a private room to the left. Now, only the main dining is open for dinner service and the staffing is a near skeleton with only two waiters and a host and cashier heading the front of the house with two people bussing tables on an early Thursday evening. After being seated, we were handed a one-page two-sided menu. I came here one weekend right before it opened and there was already a line of people waiting. I've wanted to try the dim sum here and overall it's okay, nothing outstanding. They do have parking which is nice. Items order include: Boil Beef Tripe - I had thought this was something else when I ordered, but it was okay. It's boiled beef tripe with a side of sweet soy sauce with jalapenos. Tripe stew - This was pretty solid, it had good flavor and texture. Shumai - This was okay, it had more shrimp than pork flavor than I anticipated. Hargow - The skins for the hargow was a bit too thin. When I used chopsticks to pick one up, the skin would immediately break. However, the flavor of the hargow was good. Crispy shrimp rice roll with seaweed - This had a good amount of shrimp in it, the crispy part was not that crispy. The seaweed didn't add much to the taste. This was our first time back at Koi Palace for dim sum in a while. There was no wait for a Saturday afternoon. We walked in without a reservation around 1:30pm. Overall, the experience was not great. Food was not good and service was subpar, especially considering they have an 18% service charge for all parties that's not considered gratuity. The food just didn't taste good. The chives dumplings tasted super oily and the Portuguese tarts were also not warm at all when they arrived. Food also took long to come! Took about 20 minutes for our first dish to come after ordering, and at this point, the restaurant wasn't busy anymore. We ordered the fish fin & soup dumpling and that didn't come for a full hour. We asked the staff if our order was ready and they told us they were making it already and to wait. After finishing all our other plates,, we asked again and wanted to cancel our order. He assured us that the soup dumpling was almost done being prepared and to wait a little bit more. He then comes over by himself and said that the soup dumpling will take a little longer, so he'll cancel the item for us and give us the check. He comes back with the check and luckily, we looked over the itemized bill because he did not remove the item. I don't know how that got missed after he explicitly said he'd remove it, but surely, what great service ! Honestly, the service charge they have feels unjustified. I also forgot to mention that there's normally a stand with a candle inside for you to place the teapot on to keep the tea warm, but they didn't even bother lighting our teapot stand. Koi Palace is famous across the Bay. Something about the melody of dim sum carts jingling, people talking in varied Chinese dialects, and the sound of water gushing into the seafood displays conjures up a nostalgic ABC childhood of mine where the memories are likely better than the reality of the past. I probably wanted Lunchables or McDonald's or to go outside and kick a ball during these lunches. I think people in the Bay can be a bit spoiled when writing reviews, myself included 1000%- it is near impossible to get this level of authenticity anywhere else in the United States! I'm so happy we have a thriving Southern Chinese culture here. I really enjoyed my hargow, pan fried shrimp dumplings with chives, egg white fried rice, sheng jian bao, and changfen. The changfen was a bit gummy for my liking, but the filling for the dumplings was juicy and well seasoned! The egg white fried rice was so fragrant and aromatic, the perfect carb to go with our dish. We purchased the special of the day (taro sesame bing) and we thought that it would be our dessert, BUT IT WAS NOT. IT WAS SAVORY. Some dishes tasted soggy and a bit old, and the restaurant overall felt worn and not very clean. Service was okay, nothing special. Been coming here for a decade+ and this place still surprises me! Dropped by ~9:30 am on a Saturday for early Dim Sum. With only ~6-9 cars parked in the parking lot. Line started ~9:40am, with the place opening at 10. For a party of 2, we were seated next to the koi fish pond almost immediately after 10 am. What we got: - Braised Mahi Fish Fin Soup ~ nice thick slabs of fish fins in a thick soup. Served with a side of bean sprouts to add crunchy texture. Pretty decent. Typically, I like to eat this with some red vinegar, so I asked for some on the side! - Chicken Feet, Spareribs, and Taro ~ Trio plate! Great for sampling all three without ordering Chicken Feet and Spareribs separately! Steamed spareribs with chicken feet will always be my staple and it was great to see this served together. - Shrimp Pork and Mushroom Dumpling (shui mai) ~ a staple. Juicy and very succulent. - Suckling Pig ~ slightly disappointed. The skin was too tough for my liking, and the pork was too fatty. Given the amount of food on the table, after a piece of it, it didn't warrant going back for another piece. - Shrimp Rice Rolls with Seaweed and Rice Crisp ~ THIS WAS A SURPRISE. Came here to meet up with a friend and the ambiance of this restaurant is always very nice. Its definitely an elevated dimsum restaurant. I love coming here because they have a lot of unique dishes that some other restaurants do not have. We were served by the staff member and they were attentive to us throughout our whole experience. Koi Palace is a famous dim sum spot in the Bay Area. They have many locations throughout the area and my local friend also let me know that they also own Palette Tea House, which is their more upscale (and pricier) dim sum restaurant. I think Koi Palace is the best bang for you buck dim sum place. This location has a large parking lot and is also quite busy, I've visited two times and it was a good 30 mins+ wait for a table. They have an app where you can make a table reservation before arriving, which my friend was able to do for us. Service is as expected, speak Cantonese to receive better service lol. The dim sum was tasty and the portions are great, the Har Gow and Siu Mai are large and tasty. We were able to try a large variety of their dim sum and everything was delicious. My dim sum order will always include Har Gow, Siu Mai, Lo Bak Go and Cheung Fun. My friends ordered some of their favorites as well: Chicken Feet, Spare Ribs with Diced Taro, Crispy Fried Taro Puffs, Egg Custard Bun, and BBQ Pork Rice Roll. The XO sauce is excellent, ask more if you can. The Steamed Shrimp Dumplings Topped with/ XO Sauce and BBQ Pork Paste & Rice Crisp Rice Roll (order this over the BBQ Pork Rice Roll!) were some of their more unique highlights. We have been going to koi Palace for a decade and had 4 or 5 star experiences in the past. We consistently get the coffee ribs and accompany that with a few other dishes. The ribs today felt a bit burnt and the sauce tasted burnt as well. We tried the sticky rice here for the first time and we really enjoyed that with all the chunks of chicken and mushroom. But our experience with the meatball lacked any kind of flavor even with the sauce that came with it. Overall would we come back? Of course! We've had so many more good experiences than mediocre ones that we can say today was an anomaly. But I would add that the restaurant is not as busy as it used to be. Parking can be difficult in small parking lot. Food was excellent. Lunch dim sum if you can stand the wait to get in. Awaiting the new location in Serramonte Mall to open for easier access and easier parking. Service was excellent, took away finish entree dishes. Tea refillable with diffuser on side and pot on tea candle warmer. I haven't been here for dinner in a long time. I've been a few times since COVID for dim sum, and even then, it was mediocre. The food we ordered was okay, at best. For the price, there's definitely way better Chinese food to choose from. I think Koi Palace is known for its dim sum but overall, both the dim sum and dinner menu is not that great. The service this time around was surprisingly good (the service is usually VERY BAD when we come for dim sum). It wasn't busy but there were a few other big tables and the servers did a good job! We had our cups at the edge of the table where he can clearly see it was empty and decided not to fill it up. also i had ordered rice but he forgot and didn't put it in. mind u it was just my wife and i and they still charged us 18% gratuity.... and after looking at the picture i just noticed i got charged for rice i never received. This was my first time trying Dim Sum Chinese food and it was an incredible experience. Please pardon my picture labels as I did not order for myself. This food was absolutely delicious and offered such a diverse dining experience in a way where you can sample a bunch of dishes instead of sticking to one main dish. The service was quick and attentive and constantly we're offering additional options if you wanted, but also gave you space to eat and enjoy. The decor in this place is kind of random but I also enjoyed it at the same time because there were Christmas trees but also a fake pond in the middle of the restaurant and you feel like you're in a palace. We were able to get parking pretty easily but it was very very crowded so I wish there was more seating area or a system where they can text you when your table is ready. Service was fast. Dim sum was good! I love my sticky rice in lotus leaf, it was great. The colorful dumpling options are pretty but don't necessarily add much to the flavor. Went here with a party of 9 on a. Saturday for lunch. The wait time was only 10 minutes and the workers were very nice! They gave us a few minutes while we planned our order and the food came by very quick! Everything tasted great and delicious! The Chive was so tasty and the Shrimp xiu mai was mouth watering.
