I grew up in Clinton and this has always been an incredible lunch staple in our community. However, a few years the bakery who used to supply their bread unfortunately burned down. Three stars because the bread they use now just is not the same, hate it. And therefore, two stars for the sandwiches they're making today. Four stars for their Yuengling Cheddar Soup though! Updated review ... 4 years later I am pleased to say that the business is just as good as the first time I went here. No corners are being cut and quality is the name of the game. NJ is a great place to get subs. In LA its hard to find good subs, chinese food or pizza. The cold cuts at Ye Old Sub Base are fresh ... they don't taste like your average run of the mill cheap sub shop stuff. Fresh boiled ham, properly spiced salami ... only the good stuff. The sub bread is fantastic, the veggies crisp and fresh and the soups are calorie laden but so good. (Beer and cheddar soup served with fresh crusty bread!) The prices are great too ... just make sure you know what you are getting. A large will feed 3 people. A small or half size will easily satisfy one person with a good sized appetite. The shop is cute ... full of antiques and it has that bohemian old time feel. Could use a bit more seating areas but not sure where you would put them. Maybe change from tables and booths to a counter with stools? This is one of my favorite sub shops in the US. The Italian sub is amazing and I rarely get others. The bread! The potato salad, the subs! It's great! There is nothing overwhelming the sandwich, it's just perfect. Nice combination of a good choice of Italian meat and cheese, with fresh vegetables and a little oil and vinegar. What I like is that everything is sliced really thin. That way you don't get a mouthful of onion or pepper, you get it. The potato salad is excellent. Again, the potatoes sliced thin, unlike the chunks you get in other salads. The clencher here is that everybody is so friendly. I am not from anywhere around Clinton, but people don't hold it against me driving around with Massachusetts plates. read more

Ye Olde Sub Base is neither midieval nor an actual base. It is a small sub shop which manufactures submarine sandwiches that rival the actual size of real-life submarines. The subs, painstakingly churned out through an assembly line (one person to take the order and one to make the sandwich), are without question dramatically more tasty than an actual metal sub. Ye Olde Sub Base is a no-nonsense sub shop with friendly, attentive and quick service on a strip of Main St. in Clinton. Ambience is not the strong point here, nor should it be. It is all about the bread, the meat and the fixings and it is completely worth a visit and well worth their cost. On my first visit, I ordered up a turkey sub. When prompted for a choice between small and large, I asked to see the large and then ok'd it so as not to look like a sub-sissy. The roll looked large with nothing in it, but when I was handed this five pound monster I left like I was walking back to work with a healthy mackerel in a bag. This large sub became lunch one day and dinner the next, all for $10.50. I stopped in for a quick sandwich on a late Sunday afternoon. It's located in the heart of historic downtown Clinton. It's not the most updated deli on the planet and the refrigerator holding the soft drinks could be newer, but they can make subs with the best of them. There is a huge sign hanging from the ceiling advertising their approximately 44 subs. I don't think that included their hot heros. You have the option of ordering a half or a whole. I ordered the half and it was plenty. Trust me, I can eat with the best of them. I ordered the boiled ham, capicola,and cheese sub (#17). There was a very generous portion of cold cuts and the bread was fresh. That was the perfect combo of meats to make it tasty. There was much more meat than bread and I'm a fan of that. I give it very high marks. There is also a great selection of chips to go as a side. I would go back here in a second. Prices were very fair. Service was fast and friendly. This place is the reason why I always go to a locally owned deli and not a chain. read more

In historic downtown Clinton, you will find one of the busiest yet most efficient sandwich shops around. Ye Old Sub Base is a great small eatery that offers its customers an enormous variety of sub sandwiches along with a friendly smile and unbelievably lightening fast service. The sandwiches are solid eats. I ordered the half size #18 (proscuittini, capicola & cheese) which was tasty and my friend ordered the #28 (tuna fish & cheese) which was also good. Both subs were under $5 each so it was definitely a bargain. But the truly remarkable aspect of this place was how fast they prepared the sandwiches, despite how incredibly busy it was. By no means be deterred by the long lines this tiny shop attracts. We had placed our order and, literally within 3-4 minutes, it was served to us. If you ever find yourself passing through the Clinton area and looking for an inexpensive, quick bite to eat, Ye Olde Sub Base is a sure bet. I don't know what it is about Jersey - maybe it's all the Italians - but they make a darn good sub that is tough to find in Pennsylvania. We were passing through the area, and I really didn't want to do a standard fast food joint. I remember Clinton was only a stone's throw off of 78 and decided to take a chance for a quick restaurant, as all I could recall were upper scale (although very nice) places. Luckily Sub Base came to the rescue. We were there late in the day during the week (around 2:30) and the place was still doing a decent business mainly with phone and to go orders. We sat in. Both our sandwiches were very fresh and delish. I got tuna salad, and the hubs got seafood salad. The bread was especially good. Only downer was that they don't have a bathroom in the place (really?!) and I was sent next door to use theirs which I thought was weird but whatever. My last great love in Clinton, and one of the places I need to visit whenever I visit my parents. Their subs are thick, piled high with the best meat, cheese and veg on thick fresh bread. Their hot subs are nice, but my personal favorite is the Bowser: a tasty roast beef, Russian dressing, lettuce and tomato combo worthy of the Koopa King himself. The real star of the show here is the soup. Their beer cheese is rich, super filling, and great with bread. Their black bean soup is hot, spicy and delicious. You have NOT LIVED, no matter who you are, until you try the chicken tortilla. Sub Base's "Chortilla", as my friends and I would call it as kids, is the soup of soups. Don't overlook the soups!! I don't eat subs,but go there for their soup. LOVE the Tortilla Soup (though I add a little spicy sauce when I get home)! Ask them to put the tortilla chips and sour cream on the side. Assemble at home! The Beer Cheese, the Crab...I could go on.
