So my wife and I had a weekend planned in Manchester, and I had a connection at another restaurant in town. When I called my connection, he told me that the restaurant was closed for a private party. So I went to plan B...Ye Olde Tavern. What a pleasant surprise! I called for reservations the day we wanted to go, and was told 5:45 or 8:00. We chose 5:45. The first striking thing was the building itself. 1790...They just don't build them like that anymore. The historic cool factor is worth the visit. We sat in the bar area with a nice roaring fire. The table was right at the entrance to the host area, so if I had known the traffic was going to be like it was, I may have opted for a different table. No biggie however. I am a huge Vermont beer fan, and the 1790 Ale made for them by Long Trail Brewery was outstanding. My favorite beer is Long Trail Ale, and I honestly couldn't tell the difference...Not a bad thing at all. Then the Cranberry Fritters and Vermont Maple butter hit the table. WOW. Fluffy and full of flavor. We both ordered the Cheddar Ale French Onion soup, made with...1790 Ale and it was marvelous. The soup itself had a lighter stock than most French Onion soups do, but it was loaded with herbs and tasty. The Cheddar on French onion soup was nice twist to a soup that most restaurants make traditional (Gruyere and swiss) Main courses...My wife ALWAYS gets Filet if it's on the menu and the Filet here was on point, cooked correctly and served with some really nice Béarnaise Sauce...I ordered the Prime Rib...The server instructs me that there are only 3 left. A little surprising at 6:00 on a Saturday night, but after receiving it, I get it. If they cooked 4 ribs for the night, nothing else would sell because the Prime Rib is so great. Also with only 3 left, I was worried that I'd be getting a lesser cut...Nope. Very solid cut and cooked MR like I ordered it. The service was spot on, and the staff all seemed happy to be there. I will be back, and recommend this restaurant without hesitation...So glad my first choice had a private event!!!! read more

Charming New England Tavern I loved the look on the inside of this place, it was very quaint and charming. After we ordered we were given some cranberry fritters with maple butter. I liked them very much but wish they were hotter, they sat for awhile. The maple butter was a treat. The small caesar was just the right size for me but the dressing could have been a but zippier, maybe it needed salt. I had the prime rib with vegetables and mashed potatoes and a side of horseradish cream sauce. The prime rib was excellent and the best I have had in a few years.The veggies could have been hotter. For dessert we shared the chocolate walnut pie which was very good and not too rich. I would go back here, it's great comfort food and great atmosphere. read more

Terrific food and ambiance. Staff is very friendly and attentive (thank you, Larissa!). My wife and I went here for our anniversary. The cranberry fritters were really good with maple butter and the cheddar ale onion soup in a crock was delicious. The 1790 ale is brewed by Switchback and it's also very good, a little lighter than Switchback's own signature ale. The lobster bacon Mac n' Cheese was great! Escargot was good, not overpowered with butter, but a lighter lemon mixture. NY sirloin with garlic butter was done perfectly as were the vegetarian meatballs. Many of the desserts are made on site and the peach cobbler was outstanding. There are multiple rooms of different sizes and # of tables and some have a gas fireplace or wood stove. We arrived a bit early for a table near the fireplace, so we sat at the bar in the same room until our table was ready. The bar is small, but quaint, with 3-4 stools and was part of the charm and intimacy of being seated in that room. Recommend that you make a reservation and ask for specific room or table based on what you are looking for. read more

Every bite at this place was delicious. They start your meal with delicious cranberry fritters with maple butter. When your meal salad comes out, so does a mini loaf of warm, delicious bread. Our server was helpful and attentive. The food was delicious. The atmosphere is cozy/comfortable. Their special-brewed house ale, the 1790, is awesome. I can't say a bad word about it. I absolutely loved my experience at Ye Olde Tavern. The ambience (rustic, antique decor, gaslamps at every table) was so beautiful and just my style. And the food and service was definitely worth the price. We started with the appetizer portion of the mac n cheese, which was probably the best mac n cheese I have ever had - EVER. It had huge chunks of lobster, many pieces of bacon, and the crispiest, most buttery breadcrumbs you could ask for. For the main course, I ordered the veal medallions with roasted mushrooms and spicy sauce and my boyfriend ordered the NY sirloin topped with melted blue cheese and bacon. Every entree includes fresh bread, delicious cranberry fritters with maple butter, a salad, a side of vegetables, and a choice of potatoes or rice pilaf. Great food! We called on a Friday night around 7pm and were told we didn't need reservations as long as we got there in 20 minutes. We immediately got to the restaurant in like 5 minutes and upon arrival the hostess told it was a half hour wait since we didn't have reservations. We explained the prior call and situation and she left for a few minutes and spoke with someone (not sure who) then we were immediately seated a few minutes later. From there service was adequate, but it was busy so we understood that. Food was awesome!!! Maybe a bit pricey but worth every penny! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I got the vegetarian lasagna and my fiance got the tilapia. Extremely flavorful, good sides, fresh veggies and bread was delicious. I'd highly recommend visiting, just be ready for a brief wait, service may be fair due to how busy it is, but definitely not bad by any means. read more

called for a dinner reservation for 6 people on christmas eve; wanted an earlier reservation. jeanette stated she could only accomodate that size party at 7pm. asked to put in a reservation - she informed me to "check with my people and call her back" as she doesn't want a "tentative" reservation. i stated the table may not be available when i call back but she refused to take my reservation. she was so frustrating i hung up. i was really looking forward to dining there; i now have a bitter taste and not sure i will ever call back or visit the restaurant. very bad customer service skills for a general manager...... read more

First off - very friendly and attentive staff! We were in the area and it was my Sister's BDay - we both had appetizers - she the french onion soup, I had the Lobster bisque - both were excellent. The salads were excellent and the fresh baked breads / rolls were excellent as well. I had for dinner the Liver and Onions entree with mashed potatoes ... it was very good. My sister, the BDay girl, had the Chicken Parmesan ... it was just "ok" for her hence my rating. The chicken was tough and seemed over done - she ate the inside of the piece of chicken which seemed tender. My Sister's go to meal is Chicken Parmesan so it was disappointing that the restaurant was off tonight with it. This was back on June 20th. We both had dessert - she had the flaming chocolate dessert - I had sorbet. The flaming dessert was served to another couple prior to us ... it was served with a "show" of pouring th flamed liquor over the cake ... when our's was served it wasn't really a "show". I was underwhelmed overall. The waiter said the same exact thing with the same exact inflection to every table in the small dining room. After ordering I went to the restroom to wash my hands and there was no soap. My Caesar salad had little flavor. I ordered the pot roast. The few vegetables were tasty but few. The gravy had little flavor. My husband ordered the turkey and said that he liked when I prepared it better. We shared a pumpkin pie slice which was okay. For nearly ten years my wife and I have been returning to southern Vermont for fall and winter trips. This restaurant is one of the many reasons we keep returning. We even got engaged on Mt. Equinox and celebrated that night at Ye Olde, and the next night... The building is a time capsule from the late 1700s and has the ambiance of a true colonial tavern. The history of the building is available online and at your table. The food offered is consistently satisfying and the portions are filling. The prices are more than reasonable for this dining experience, considering location and the quality of the food. I would consider this elegant comfort food. Every time we are here it feels like having a holiday dinner at a relatives house. They have an interesting drink menu of classical cocktails which you can view on their website. The servers can be seen working very hard and making your drinks themselves at the bar, which is available for seating and early arrivals. You are offered an included salad(Caesar or house vinaigrette) and fresh loaf of bread, complimentary cranberry fritters with maple butter which are a signature, several appetizers including lobster bisque(chunks of lobster) and an onion soup made with their own Long Trail beer and Vermont cheddar, a very tasty baked brie presented beautifully, and two of their very popular dinners(twin lobster tails/lobster mac and cheese creamy and good amounts of lobster) can be portioned down for an appetizer. The pot roast and turkey(think Thanksgiving any time you want) dinners are an easy go to and are fantastic. The scrod is my wife's favorite, and unless there's another fish special she rarely strays from that. I usually go for specials. My favorite meal, rack of lamb, I recently had here on Valentine's Day this year and was easily one of the best meal's I have ever had,preceded by a lobster tail grilled to perfection. The lamb itself consisted of five generous chops with a fresh herb crust cooked rare to my liking. Of note, Valentine's Day was also one of their candle light dinner series, where the restaurant is lit by candles and lanterns. Accompanied by fire places and wood burning stoves, this helps master the true charm of this colonial tavern, even actors are present dining and wandering through the restaurant in traditional attire of that era. It is an amazing experience you must be a part of. Walking into the tavern from the cold, being greeted by this great staff, and enjoying your meal while you cozy up next to one of their fire places is about as good as it gets. I got snowed in in Manchester VT. (See review of Manchester View) Everyone else closed for the night at around 4pm. These folks were open and had the best Early Bird specials I've seen in ages. $19.99 for bread, cranberry corn fritters, choice of salads, 6-7 entree choices, desert and coffee. The entree choices all looked so good it was hard to choose! I got the Turkey dinner. Everything was excellent. The Salmon I saw coming out of the kitchen looked great too. Next time I'm trying the Porkchop dinner; it looked as good or better than mine! Truly excellent service to match the food. Not the Gastro-pub, Bistro crap that's become so popular everywhere. Good, real, unpretentious, well prepared, classic American food. By unpretentious I don't mean old or boring; I mean not fancied-up for no reason. Had a very nice dinner in a wonderful historic building. The service was excellent, and even though it was a crowded Saturday they accommodated us without reservations. I had the scallops which were cooked perfectly, and dinner came with a Caesar salad, and I had rice. The cranberry fritters were a nice beginning with the maple butter. Although I enjoyed my entree, the sides could have been better. The Caesar salad was just OK, and for the price of the meal I was not blown away. I don't mind paying more for a meal but it better be exceptional and this fell a little short of my expectations I have had better in the Manchester area, For me this was 4 stars because of the service and I appreciate accommodating us on a busy night without a reservation meal was very good but based on what I paid it was not exceptional. Brought a family group of 11 here for a special occasion on a Saturday night not long ago. In my experience, restaurants don't always deal well with large parties at their busiest. The place was full and yet we were handled excellently by our devoted server. Two of us arrived late and the welcoming host made sure we had drinks less than one minute after sitting down -- a minor gesture, but it started things off very nicely for me! The bill of fare is more "special occasion" than "everyday value". I found the menu ambitious, including high-end steak & lobster, but the kitchen exceeded my expectations. Everyone in our group was generally satisfied and we found the pricing to be reasonable. Complementing the good food and service, the signature Olde atmosphere is interesting and memorable. So many restaurants try to cultivate retro style, to varying effect. This place actually has a credible 18th century origin. The proprietors here have done a great job decorating with period furnishings in what appears to be a labor of love... Bravo!! read more

Loved our evening here. The building itself is classic old, or olde of you prefer, but well worth seeing. Our server was very modern, however. Efficient, friendly, and ready with suggestions. This place is adorable. I went with my mom and sister, but could see this being a really romantic spot. Dimly lit house built in 1790, made me feel like I was stepping back in time. Some really good choices on the menu. Traditional favorites Tom Turkey along with lobster Mac and cheese. Game choices, chicken and its in Vermont's oldest continuously run tavern. Heck Ethan Allen and the green mountain boys planned our freedom from here. As a local we have fine choices where to enjoy a meal out. Ye old Tavern is one of our favorites. read more

Been there many times over the last 15 years or so. When we were in Vermont late July and again last week we had dinner there three times. Twice with my wife and I, and once with a party of four. With the party of 4 we had the Pot Roast, the Roast Turkey,the Chicken breast with apple cider and cranberries and finally the Crispy duck with the rosemary and garlic sauce. Every plate was cleaned when the waitress came to clear. Everyone was very very satisfied with their meals and of course the complimentary cranberry fritters with Maple butter. The next two visits were last week when my wife and I enjoyed our meals of the Turkey and the New England Scrod with the Chardonney, sherry,Vermont cheddar and seasoned bread crumbs, and lastly the Friday special of Prime Rib(end cut).All meals are made fresh including the complimentary salad made with fresh greens and blue cheese. read more
