Our first time to Ye Rustic Inn was by happenstance while we also picked up another female friend along the way; yeah, I was pimping with a woman on each side of me! My friend and I were on an extended walk and decided to walk the carpool route I took for work. On a whim, we checked if my carpool buddy was home (she was), and she was more than willing to walk with us after a discussion turned from just a walk to happy hour! She'd wanted to try the place, too. We've eaten at the Chi Dynasty restaurant next door. A brisk walk along Los Feliz Blvd. and soon we were ready for some suds.
The place just started to get busy with the Steelers/Chiefs NFL game on. In our grubby walking clothes and I with crazy bedhead, we didn't quite look the part (or hipster to the embarrassing extreme), but the place was so dark the various TVs were the main illumination in the joint. The waitress gave us the rundown of the happy hour specials, we also flipped through the regular menu, and minutes later we dove ( more like dive, as in dive bar) into our order: a pint of Boddingtons on tap for me and our passenger ($7.00 ea), a Diet Coke for my friend ($2.50), an order of onion rings ($8.00), and as the evening continued, a pint of Newcastle on tap ($7.00), a pint of Bud ($4.00 happy hour price - I was desperate at this point and regretted it after the first sip), and a 6-piece order of their "world famous" buffalo wings ($7.00). With tall cold ones in hand (my friend forgot her ID so we had to pass our beers to her to drink) and a "salud", the evening began. The beer refreshed us and went down smoothly! The onion rings came out and I was ready to throw them down (I worked up an appetite on the long walk).
ONION RING ALERT...They were a beautiful crisp golden-burnt color and a plentiful amount in all sizes great for sharing (I personally would've eaten all of them). The broke nicely when you bit into each one. Alas, they were standard golden onions and not the sweet Maui kind I currently weighed all onion rings to. They were good for sustenance but nothing to write home about. Plus, the ranch dressing they came with was disgustingly runny and barely covered or even stayed on when I dipped the rings into it. Blah! 2.5 stars
The ladies chit-chatted along and I was content as I watched the game, the people, and our waitress, but this was when I decided to order a Bud (I'm an import man) because I wanted to order something off the scant happy hour menu, and the wings (medium-hotness so the ladies would try). I had to say, these guys were very meaty and not bad at all! They also came with carrot and celery sticks, however, with the same runny ranch dressing. I passed on dipping them and went naked. Full of flavor and medium still had a spiciness to it. I would return for these.
The service was good. Our short cute waitress who wore a nicely-fitted "je'taime" t-shirt sat us quickly into a cushiony booth and was ready to take our order. As the evening continued on and the place got filled with Monday night football revelers (mostly male), she was a bit harder to track down but she appeared and attempted to check in on us from time to time. She filled our water glass regularly and the check came out once we were done.
Parking was decent as they shared with many other businesses within a small strip mall. However, many of those closed closer to the evening time which freed up more spaces. Otherwise, metered parking was available along Hillhurst Ave. or nearby side streets. We walked it in a roundabout way from our pad in Silver Lake which wasn't bad at all.
Overall, Ye Rustic Inn was decent but I would come back again to try a couple other things like their food menu. I was totally disappointed in the lackluster happy hour menu (i.e. not many choices and prices frankly weren't that good). I found minimal value as noted by the prices and service above (total bill was around $42.00 before tip).
BUT I HAVE ONE MAJOR COMPLAINT BURIED HERE: ONCE THE CHARGE CLEARED A FEW DAYS LATER THERE WAS AN EXTRA $1.50 IN THE TOTAL BILL AFTER THE TIP; NOT COOL AT ALL!
The atmosphere was very dive bar and geared more to men (they needed more attractive waitresses besides ours). There were two sections and each was fairly crammed. There were five TVs in the front bar area, and where we sat underneath one of the TVs it was blaring loud even after we requested to turn it down. The booths where of old skool diner style. And again, extremely dark. The attire was casual, but I wouldn't feel comfortable in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. At least pants and a collared shirt. Although they accepted credit cards, they didn't accept my credit card of choice...AMEX! read more
