The ambience was very chill and the server we had was very upbeat and attentive. They have a wide selection of German beers and we tried two of them. They were pretty good. The one star is for our server alone -- she was very kind, attentive, and honest, even if some of her recommendations ended up being a little misguided. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. I ordered the chicken schnitzel with mushroom gravy, my boyfriend got the Hungarian brat with spaetzle, and our friend ordered the Hungarian brat on a roll. Starting with the schnitzel: it wasn't completely terrible, but it definitely wasn't good. The breading was some what soggy and sliding off the chicken, and the chicken itself had almost no seasoning besides an odd lemony sourness. The mashed potatoes were honestly awful -- extremely sour, like they were overloaded with sour cream but missing butter, salt, or any real flavor. I LOVE mashed potatoes and only managed two bites before giving up. The red cabbage was overcooked, mushy, and had a slightly off taste. Overall, the schnitzel plate was maybe a 2/10, and those points go solely to the fact that the chicken itself was technically edible. My boyfriend's meal somehow managed to be worse. The bratwurst was fine, but tasted frozen and reheated rather than fresh. The sauerkraut, according to him, "tasted like dirty socks." The spaetzle was genuinely offensive -- mushy, overly bland, and tossed with what looked like hydrated diced mushrooms that literally tasted like dirt. I honestly questioned whether it had gone bad. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself felt dirty and had a strange smell throughout. It honestly seems like a place locals may still visit out of habit or convenience, but it no longer reflects what I imagine it once was. It's unfortunate, because there's something special about a restaurant that's been around for 65 years and still tries to maintain its old-school charm. I gave myself a week to see if I still felt a review was in order. I hesitate because I don't like getting anyone in trouble but, as an employer I would want to know. I'm safe. Everything is cool. Is this a big deal? Yes and no. On Tuesday,March 21 I had such an unpleasant in uncomfortable interaction with the security / bouncer that it nearly ruined the birthday evening for a dozen or so friends who gathered at Red Lion. I'm going to tell the story first in a what happened sequence adding only the editorialising needed. It was raining that night for the first time in months I went home on my motorcycle and got my car, not wanting to ride in the rain. Got to RL at 8pm. Realised immediately I had left my ID in my bike bag. Went to the doorman and asked if it was possible ... and proffering my "CADMV" official app of the DMV accepted by law enforcement. I am, after all, 59 years old and under no delusion I could pass for any age under 40. Did not expect a yes, I know the rules, but at my dotage was hoping. Texted friends, laughing, they came outside to try and plea for me and I waved them off saying I was fine and would be back in 30 minutes or so. For context I am by far the oldest in our group. Most in 30s with a couple of 40s and 20s. Came back with DL and handed it to doorman who reacted as if it were fake - who makes a fake id say they are nearly 60? He casually puts my DL in his pocket. Taken aback I said, "Excuse me? Are you stealing my ID?" He pulls it back out and waves the blacklight at it and declares there is no photo in the hologram. I stupidly blurt out "I am very blonde but I am clearly there!" He is impassive. I tell him "I can't believe I am saying this but I guess I have to call the cops now" Several of my friends at this point are now on the sidewalk but I tell them I can handle it. Then I say "Sir, you are STEALING my id." And reiterate that I will bring the cops. Then he backs into the door closing it in my face and comes back several minutes later with the manager. Here is where it is relevant I am an employer. I also would "have my employee's back"over a stranger customer. I DO NOT attempt to inveigle or even engage with the manager. If this were a normal night out we would all leave, never to return, but the cake is on the table for the birthday boy. Manager asks for credit cards to back up my identity (already absurd because I am clearly in the hologram and believe me, I checked that very night to be sure it is clear). Of course, I show him and there is zero apology. He even says "I'll let it pass for tonight". Ha! My own state issued DL will pass. Okay buddy. I would think a bar security person would at least be made aware of the app existence in training. IMO anyone visibly over 35 should be able to use that ... I digress. I didn't want to complain because I don't want to sound like some sort of Karen but if this happened to a customer at my business I would probably fire the doorman. It is one thing to demand my ID be presented, I went back for it without a fuss. My own fault I forgot. But when he put it in his pocket then put his hands in his other pockets and just looked past me, what is that other than literal theft and harrasment? The birthday cake was cut and a large group moved to another location where all of us were welcomed. I sent a message asking to speak to someone about it and heard nothing. They offer a VAST selection of German beers along with cocktails, full bar, wine, etc..they only have street/metered parking and as for the bathroom, I'm sure they have one but we didn't use it. I remember coming here many times 20+ years ago with groups of fellow coworkers at the time. I had really been craving some German food lately so I told my son we should go there tonight. Honestly, it wasn't the same experience I remembered from the past. We sat in their semi-outdoor patio area as they were having trivia night inside. Elle was our server and she was attentive/got us everything we asked for/needed. She was somewhat pleasant but aloof at the same time. The service was pretty decent overall. The bread basket came with cold bread and it was also stale. I ordered the chicken schnitzel that came with a side of cabbage and mashed potatoes with gravy. It was nice and crispy and I liked the sides. My son got three different appetizers for us to share from and it was genuinely just too much food for the two of us. It also took up so much space on the table. I ended up feeling overwhelmed with everything there and kind of lost my appetite after a few bites. He ordered the potato pancakes which were dripping in grease. He got the sausage platter which comes with 3 different cut up sausages and also the pretzel platter that was basically a low budget charcuterie board with a big soft pretzel. The pretzel itself was pretty good and I asked for NO SALT on it, which they complied with. The patio stunk really bad, like a mix of outdoors and urine. The menus were also dirty, sticky and smelly. It really just gave me the ick! I don't know, I remember this place being better all those years ago but then again, nothing stays the same. Walk in the lounge and you'll find a man playing a keyboard and singing into a microphone entertaining old timers that likely came here regularly as youngsters. Upstairs you'll find a younger crowd yearning to be in Germany sipping the dregs in the garden while servers fetch them another round. Time stands still in the portal. The same staff since yesteryear are still working the floor and bar. Always come for the pretzel platter, that's a you need. Broccoli as a side if you must eat something green. I used to work fairly close to The Red Lion, and for a time it was my regular, after-work place. Nowadays, I get in less than once a year, so I was excited to drop in for brunch prior to an event in the area. How nice to slip into the calm, dark wood restaurant and settle into one of the stools at the bar. The aromas of German food and beers have long since seeped into every nook and cranny of the 60+ year-old dining room and bar, making it very easy to leave Los Angeles outside while feeling thoroughly transported to Europe. There were only a few of us in the quiet, downstairs main room, as most of the Sunday Brunchers were upstairs in the outdoor beer garden -- so it was calm and relaxing, and bartender Sari took very good care of us all. While perusing the menu, I ordered one of their brunch cocktails: Jägermeister Cold Brew with cream... The unmistakable taste of Jäeger was tamped down quite a bit by the coffee favoring, and the addition of cream gave the drink very similar qualities to a white Russian. Maybe odd as you read the description, but really quite tasty for a morning drink. Once that was done, I switched to a cold and satisfying Warsteiner Dunkel, dark and chocolatey, and easy to drink with a meal. As for that meal, while there were many excellent options, I chose a simple, German plate: Käsekrainer sausage (beef & pork, studded with Emmenthaler cheese). The amply-sized link was peppery to the taste and smooth in consistency, with loads of flavor. The accompanying sauerkraut was warm and vinegary, and properly matched with spicy German mustard to round out the perfect bite. Mashed potatoes and gravy would be the usual side with this sausage, but I substituted the German fried potatoes, which really satisfied with a pop of bacon and fried onions. This was a VERY GOOD way to start a Sunday. Will need to come back with a couple of other folks so we can order a larger selection of foods to share, but in the meantime I was very happy to be back at my old haunt, and to see that everything has remained as top-tier as always. read more

This gem is one of our favorite German/European eateries. Cozy, old world style dining downstairs and "ein fantastisch biergarten" up top (usually very busy). The beer, food, and service are always good, but parking is limited. If you live anywhere nearby, consider using a ride sharing service. The ambiance is fun, they had a pianist/singer downstairs on our visit, and lots of TVs in the beer garden usually with sports on (great place to watch the World Cup). DRINK: Great selection of German beers (on tap and in bottle), as well as liquors/schnapps, sodas, and coffee. Dessert drinks, like Asbach Coffee, Irish Coffee and Liberty Bell ($12.50), which my wife tried. It's labeled as "Dessert in a Martini Glass" and consists of Crème de Menthe, Kahlua, Baileys, and milk...delicious! FOOD: We started by sharing a bowl of Goulash Soup ($9), which has plenty of stewed beef in a rich, well-seasoned brown broth. Next, we shared a large German Pretzel ($12), served warm and comes with German or sweet mustard, or add Obazda (+$1.50) which is a delicious Bavarian cheese spread with onions and paprika. The Sausage Platter ($19) which includes 3 large German sausages (bratwurst, knackwurst, and smoked bockwurst) cut into bite size pieces and served with pickles, peppers, and mustard is one of my favorites. They also have items on the menu like Fish & Chips, Burgers (beef and veggie), Chicken Fingers, but it is primarily European cuisine. They'll provide complimentary bread/butter, but sometimes you must ask for it. Between the goulash, the two large appetizers, and the beers, we had more than enough to eat for the three of us. It's authentic and delicious! TIP: Check Groupon for a deal including a Sausage Platter and two beers. If you're into German beers and food - or even just into cool old school bars, you'll be into Red Lion! My boyfriend brought me here as this is a spot he loves and we were in the area and we had a great meal that left me stuffed even though it wasn't even a crazy amount - just that hearty German food! My beer was refreshing and a decent size, and the upstairs patio is the place to be for sports, vibes, and a European feel. The inside of the bar also has a few areas that are more dark and tavern-like if you're looking for a different type of experience. I really don't think you can go wrong no matter where you sit. Now onto the food, the potato pancakes are super yummy and come with apple sauce, cranberry sauce, and sour cream - all of which I love. I got the sausage with some cheese in it and it was super tasty, I even decided to forgo my roll as I was getting full so I could eat at least half of the sausage before I felt I was going to burst. I walked into chaos upon entering this venue. Mainly because it was maybe night two of the World Series, I can't remember. There were so many rooms, bar areas, people, noise, beer everywhere. I was honestly overstimulated. We finally met our party somewhere outside. You go up stairs and then there's another bar area and then there's an outdoor area. We had to go to the crowded bar to place our order for food. Then we had to come back to the crowded bar to pick up our food. Apparently there was a server, but we did not see her when we arrived and sat down at our table, but it does appear that they have someone that comes out there and checks on you in the outdoor area. It looks like a very happening place because like I said people were there to watch the World Series . It was just too much for me. Very, very, very, very crowded. I'm sure it's not like this every night but that night was crazy. We did order some of their food. We ordered the chicken fingers and it tasted OK, I mean it tastes like chicken fingers, and that was it. I imagine if you are a sports buff you would really enjoy this place, but if you just wanna sit down and try to catch up with somebody, this is not the place for you because you probably won't be able to hear each other. I used to come here back in the day and decided to pop in for old times' sake. Red Lion opened in 1959, and it's a cozy neighborhood tavern with a lively biergarten upstairs. There is also a secret hidden bar where you'll occasionally find guest bartenders serving up specials. I met up here with a friend to celebrate National Margarita Day. My fondest memories of German language learning that lasted 14 years rekindled when I was introduced to this wonderful tavern restaurant in the middle of East Silverlake. Proper Weinerschnitzel, Rottkohl and Rhinesrouladen brought back many happy times of my youth. My friend who performs with a quite Bavarian oom-pah-pah band for Oktoberfests was my guide to find this place. I often wish they had a gift shop, even if ein bisschen one since Alpine Village is no more. But the reliably tasty standards like really great brat and bockwurst with a homespun sauerkraut with apples always hits the spot. And while the bier selection is only limited by what can be imported here, you can still manage a litre Spass if you're up to the challenge. It's official....through no fault of the restaurant, I may not be the biggest fan of German food. That being said, I enjoyed the experience of trying a new food, and would recommend everyone giving it a try. Customer service was excellent. I first came here around 2001 or 2002 and I would stop in every couple years. I used to come here probably once a week in the early 2000s and then I recently came back twice within this year. The food has always been mediocre. The service has always been iffy. The mood and the vibes are the same after 20+ years . parking still can suck, but I've never had an issue finding parking either in the small lot or on the street close by. I personally hate heavy beers, but they do have tequila thank God! and they have this cherry beer so when in Rome, I'll partake! the last time i went, my friend ordered a pork dish that was just nothing but grease, the texture was mush. I myself know to be safe and I get the hotdog/weenies sampler plate w/ toothpicks on each nub (what a waste of toothpicks!) When the menu says "brat" , I'm thinking of a big old juicy Polish sausage like you get at the state fair but when the plate comes out, it's just like $.99 store weenies ;( there is more of a nostalgia aspect coming here, I have never been to Germany so I can't say if this is authentic, but it doesn't really matter. The food is great to soak up a lot of alcohol. I will recommend only from a dive bar perspective, but I will not return if it is up to me. I've never felt more uncomfortable or unsafe at a bar. For my friend's birthday we went to Red Lion Tavern. We were outside in the back when my friend let me know vaping wasn't allowed. I immediately put mine away. No argument, no attitude. Moments later, a server named Taylor stormed over, accused my friend of mocking her, and started escalating for no reason. The blonde woman who said she was the manager was actually kind and apologetic. She quietly told us that "Mike behind the bar might get angry and things could turn physical," and advised us to leave. We later heard they were saying we were kicked out for vaping, which is completely untrue. We were calm, sober, and cooperative, and several other people were vaping nearby without issue. Which makes Taylor's true motive unclear. And if needed, the owner can see the security video footage of everything. Mike was screaming in my face, I recorded it and have video evidence. Taylor smirked and waved at us while we were being escorted out, but stopped immediately when her manger glanced behind her, proving she wanted this to happen. This was an awful experience that involved clear hostility and a threat of violence from a staff member. No guest should ever be put in that position. read more

Some go there just to have their beer. They have a great selection. They also have a full bar. We go there for the food. They have great German food. They also have burgers if you want, but their German food is just great and the best around there. The place is comfortable and the seating is super. It does not often get packed. You can dine in, take away or have it delivered. We love to dine there. The service is just so nice that you want to be there. Their Beerstein Soup is so good if you just want soup and some bread. It is also a great starter. It is split pea soup with a wiener and a great roll. Speaking of soup, you must try their Vegetarian Goulash which has vegetarian sausage, potatoes and vegetables in tomato-based sauce. Their main courses are great. So the waiter George was rude to my party, I confronted him, he was still rude to me because my party wanted to split the bill and was confusing us by slowing taking off the items we payed for. I confronted him and George made it "the hard way for him". As I asked for the servers name, he lied and told me his name was Joshua however, his name is George like I said previously.. The manager of the upstairs area was a lot kinder, we payed the bill and headed downstairs. . I talked to Betsy, the other manager who was extremely kind and she led me back upstairs to talk to them. I get upstairs, I say I found out your real name George , once again was condescending and rude once again and then pretend to JERK OFF HIS PRIVATE at me and say FUCK YOU. They quickly hurried me downstairs and the bartender that was also working up there just yelled at me that we were closed. Then all they said is that they would possibly give him a write up. I left my information to the general manager Mike. I would like to add that I am editing this a couple days later. I have spoke with Mike, who is the owner, and he is extremely passionate about his place. We had a very kind positive, conversation, and he is looking into everything. This staple of the Silverlake neighborhood was such a pleasure to experience for the first time. A German beer hall and tavern, the group of us sat in the middle level of the establishment. It felt intimate like we had our own private room, plus it was all decorated for Christmas. Our server Sylvia was incredibly kind and took amazing care of us (and make sure to catch her Marlena Dietrich act!). We all ordered a version of mulled wine, a hot toddy, and the Rüdensheimer Coffee, which was a whole table side experience. Long: I have tried Red Lion Tavern a few times now and each time I really enjoy my time here, however the food can be hit or miss. It has everything you need for a fun Tavern, great beers, a great atmosphere and plenty of seating. Food here is decent but nothing to rave about. It is tasty but sometimes lacks flavor. The best dish is the pretzel and it is something nice to snack on when having a beer. Worth a visit for the atmosphere and the great selection of beers! read more

Food was fine and the ambience was nice inside. Bathrooms smell bad, worse than a usual dive bar but I guess it is what is it. The outside patio is usually empty but if busy would feel like a fun time. Beer is a bit pricey, better off going across the street to Cha cha lounge for significantly cheaper beer. Unfortunately, that's not all the bad news and there's some more serious issues with this place specifically the bartender and security. On multiple occasions I've overheard and seen the downstairs bartender be explicitly (sexually) forward with younger women and making them uncomfortable. It's happened on occasion with friends on mine and I've overheard conversations about it. More than once I've seen minors walking and getting drinks and bragging about how the male bartender downstairs doesn't mind. Not sure what his name is but he's a male, African American man. Don't know how else to describe him. Security doesn't check IDs well enough and will be drunk on the job. Has happened more than once. That alone is enough for me to take my money somewhere else and hope that eventually that bartender gets caught and this place gets some good people working there. As for the other employees, I have never had an issue and the Karoake night host has been cool every time. Unfortunate that they can't manage to find a better security staff and more importantly a bartender who doesn't commit explicit crimes. Do better. read more

Ive been here twice in the past 2 weeks. The staff is friendly but the place gets busy and do their best to answer questions. The goulash has lots of meat and is very hearty, the split pea soup was good but by the time i had the split pea, i was already buzzed. Speaking of buzzed, you can't find these beers in just any bar and much less a beer garden. We lost alpine village in Torrance but this place is great. The interior is really cool, old school and charming. Now the cons are kinda out of their control, there is no parking (welcome to silverlake), the dinner salad was ok but i would skip it. There is a stench like old trash near the back area i think the garbage containers are the source, the sausages in the sample platter are pre sliced and cooked on a grill and that can dry them out a little bit, the pretzels good but i've had better at other german establishments. The place is absolutely filthy, the tables are sticky, the bathroom is disgusting, one of the knives that we were given was dirty and still had food on it, and we waited over an hour for goulash and when we asked we were told it wasn't available in the first place. Why not tell us that up front? Our pretzel came out cold and they forgot to give us sweet mustard and gave us cheese instead. The beer is expensive as hell, for a pretzel and two pints of beer we paid $45. There must be some better Biergarten out there in LA, the only reason they get two stars is for the variety of selection in food and German beer. Good luck getting it though. Red Lion Forever! Iconic, historical, Deutsche. With new hipsteries cropping up and fading out every other year, the Red Lion Tavern is reliable institution. There are 3 (well 4) main zones. 1. The dark and cozy entry level 2. The intimate indoor upper level bar 3. .the Biergarten! 4. Parking lot patio (remnant from Covid days): benches on a slanted grade. Great German beer and food - quality, but not fancy. In particular, I love the weisswurst, the red cabbage, the chicken schnitzel and the flammkuchen (a sort of German pizza). And the pretzel. The waitresses are wonderful and proficient. No messing around! They also offer a nice selection of digestifs, like Jaegermeister, try Zwack! It's a great place for catching a Fußball game (even at 6am for a Euro game), an afternoon hang out, or evening in the lower level. We love catching the German International sensation, Heino, every time he makes his way through during Oktoberfest. You're lucky to find parking in the small lot, but street parking is most always easy to obtain. read more

Glad i found this spot as it is now my go to spot for afternoon ball games! Lovely patio, great vibes, and the bartender liberty is always a treat to see! Will keep coming for sure! read more
