I've reviewed this spot before, but I had to come back with an update , they've gotten even better! This place is still very much a hidden gem. It's not fancy, but the food speaks for itself every single time. Yeah, the parking can be a little rough, but honestly, that just shows how many people love coming here. And I get it , the pupusas always hit, the plantains are perfect, and their arroz con gandules is straight-up bomb. Every visit reminds me why I keep coming back. This is a small, hole-in-the-wall spot that serves up Central American, Mexican & Caribbean cuisine. There is a small amount of parking along the front of the tiny strip center where it is located. It is just around the corner from El Ranchero on Sprague Street. There is a fair amount of seating, standard cafeteria style metal chairs and tables. There is no table service, you head to the front to place your order. The menu is fairly broad, the items listed in both Spanish and English - if in doubt point. English is well spoken here, service is excellent. I ordered the Chicharron de Cerdo ( fried pork belly chunks), with salad, fried yuca strips, and pickled red onions. Those were all good items, though the salad was rather bland. The fried pork chunks were nicely cooked, very flavorful with a nice layer of tasty fat on each piece. The fried yuca was a bit dry on its own, but was nice when dipped in one of the three available sauces - red, verde, habanero! I also tried a Pupusa Revueltas (cheese and pork filled) served with amazing Crudito, a lightly fermented shredded cabbage slaw, with a bit of carrot, onion, oregano, and a touch of lime juice or vinegar, some heat is present and this is perfect with pupusas. The version of both items served here is very, very nice. And as with most of the small spots like this in the part of Winston, I'll definitely be back for more. read more

My wife and I wanted to place an order since we recently moved to the area, and we've been looking for a Latino restaurant we could rely on. We ordered the chicken and pork chicharrones. The seasoning on the meat was far below expectations, which really disappointed us, and the rice also lacked flavor and had a texture that didn't seem fresh. The location of the restaurant looks a bit shady so I was a bit skeptical at first. Though, I love the variety of the menu a mix of Salvadorean, Mexican and Dominican! I was in search of a traditional Salvadorean Breakfast- Fried Sweet Plantains, scrambled eggs, refried beans, Salvadorean fresh cheese with a side of avocado and tortilla with coffee! The food here is very good! The Papusas are the best I've had so far. The environment makes me feel like actually in El Salvador or possibly Mexico. Often the family owned smaller restaurants are always the best. The restaurant is kept very clean which is another plus. All the staff wear masks. read more

This place always hits the spot! I think I've tried almost everything here. We love the pupusas and the horchata! It's a staple in our house. They are prompt with timing and when we pick it up still piping hot. The prices are good and they deliver a friendly face when we go in. This is a hidden gem at the end off Waughton St. it is at the end of a small strip of stores with limited parking. This hole in the wall has a diverse menu that has dishes from Mexico, Dominican Republic and El Salvador,3 very different countries. The Pupusas are hot with melting cheese right off the "Comal". The yuca con Chicharrón is a boiled cassava with fried pork chunks with a vinegar based Cole slaw. There are all types of traditional dishes, none will disappoint. Went a bit before noon today and beat the crowd by a few minutes. Service was excellent and food came out much quicker than in previous visits. My papusas were delicious as were the soupy beans and arroz con gandules. The horchata was absolutely amazingly good. I always run out of curtido, but I really like this place. The Bistec Encebollado (Sirloin Steak with Caramelized Onions) was good, simply seasoned, if a bit dry. Was served with a generous portion of yellow rice and a side salad. Solid meal for $11. Pupusas Locas, order of 4 for $7. Warm, gooey, and yummy! It's a corn tortilla stuffed with cheese, pork, and vine flower (?). Don't ask, I have no idea. Eating all of those could be a filling meal in itself! Served with a spicy pickled cabbage, and a simple tomato sauce. Least favorite item was the Pastelillos Pollo, $2. It was good, but definitely dry. Needs a moister filling, or a sauce to dip. All in all, I'd try them again. And, hey, they deliver?!? That's almost unheard of in my neighborhood. Ugh so disappointed! I came here to pick up a lunch order and ended waiting an additional 25 minutes when the place had about 5 people in it. I'm used to the attitude from the workers there but today was ridiculous. I had to repeat my order a few times because she didn't understand what I was trying to say. There were a crowd of guys playing pool and catcalling in the front when you walked in. That was fun and disgusting. I stood at the counter waiting for my food. I overheard one of the workers tell a table that they were having a special of 4 pupusas for $5 which is the special they run on Thursdays. Yet I was charged the full $7 and when I asked a worker if they had a special going on, she said no. Really??! They just choose who to give special deals to? My husband and I spend at least $30 every time we go there and we go there a few times a month. After today though, I'm not sure we will be going back. It's such a shame because their food is so delicious. The yuca frita with chicarron is another favorite but they pork has been having a massive amount of fat with it and it's never even crispy. Cuchifrito is a family favorite in my house. The food is excellent and the portions are immense; I have never been able to finish my meal in one sitting and have always needed a to-go container. Cuchifrito is a family-owned community-oriented restaurant that operates at a totally leisurely pace. Sometimes, you may have to wait a while for your food (you know...because they actually make it, not heat up a can of something in the microwave). I love the atmosphere. It's loud and rowdy in there at times: music playing, people talking (sometimes very loudly), and guys playing pool in the front of the dining area. If you want a fancy, "fine dining" experience, go to Fabian's. If you are in a big hurry or impatient to get fed quickly, go to a McDonald's.If you want good, homestyle-cooked, El Salvadoran food in an authentic, family-owned business, go to Cuchifrito. Update: Right after I posted the above review, I placed my order with Cuchifrito and I'm sorry to say that my experience was not as good as it's been in the past. To begin with, the girl behind the counter was different from the nice one who usually works there. This other one wasn't friendly. When I asked her for extra salsa roja, she acted annoyed that I wanted more, then told me it would be 50 cents extra, which I was fine with. I would not have changed my review of Cuchifrito if it had stopped there, but when I got home, I discovered that I, too, had been charged $7 for my pupusas, when there was a sign on the wall that clearly stated they were $5. Since this seems to be something happens there, I couldn't let that go uncommented-on. The servings of fried plantains are also now half the size of what I used to get. I won't say we are never eating there again, the food is still excellent, but I will be careful to check that they're not upcharging me from now on.
