I found this place online and read that they won a coveted James Beard Award (best chef in the Northeast) which is beyond impressive. Their food definitely did not disappoint. My husband ordered the pad Thai with chicken and I ordered the pad se mao with shrimp and squid. It was fantastic - the sauces and spices were spot on. I was hoping that this place would be amazing from a James Beard award winning chef, but it was just...OK. I'm not exactly sure why reservations needed to be made. The website made it seem like reservations had to be made like they were super-busy but when we got there, there was only one other table seated. No big crowds, no servers running around, just 1 guy behind the counter seating, serving, and cashing out customers. The place was nice with lots of Thai decor but nothing wowed me. The server was nice and helped us decide what to get. I got the Nam Manao (limeade) to drink which was refreshing and I got the Spice Level 1 Tum Yum Talay (Shrimp and sea scallops, mussels and squid served in a savory lemongrass-chili jam broth. rice noodles, Thai basil) this was delicious when it cooled down tremendously. We had heard about Saap for years, as well as its recent James Beard Award for best Northeast chef, but finally went there with some new friends last night. It was beyond amazing! I got the Panang Curry with Thai basil, coconut milk, assorted vegetables, shrimp, and jasmine rice and it was outstanding! My husband got the Gang Dang Sapparot Red curry with pineapple, assorted vegetables, and pork and it was equally phenomenal. We spent a month in Thailand and live in the city, and this is as good as Thai food gets! The spices were spot on! Super impressive! We've come here twice now and I'm honestly torn. -Our first visit was what you would expect from a JBA restaurant- really delicious and consistent food. -Our second visit was very underwhelming, unfortunately. Our ticket got lost in the kitchen and, after waiting over an hour for our food, it came out just "okay" (most of mine was burnt on the bottom, probably from rushing to get it out before closing). We'll have to go back another time yet to see which of our experiences is the norm. Some things that are unusual (and honestly kind of annoying) about the establishment in general: -you have to make a reservation online no matter what. Like, even if they aren't busy, even if you call ahead. An online reservation is always required. -they only have one (very pleasant) front-of-house staff at all times. That means one person hosting, waiting, and cashing out for something like 20 tables. Needless to say, they're stretched very thin and needs often go unmet for quite some time. -if you want a soda it comes in a can with no refills...for $4. read more

This is a review for whoever answered the phone when we called with an inquiry, and to the guy who turned us away after we arrived. In other words, we did not have dinner at Saap tonight, that's how bad service and welcoming was. My friend and I had had a long day, we also have not seen each other in years. To celebrate, we wanted a nice dinner. She had heard about Saap and their J.B. reputation. I called and asked if they were busy, and if we could get a table. I was told, "we have four tables right now if you come in the next 30 minutes." My friend lives 5 minutes away, so I asked, "how about if we're there in 10?" I was told: "even better." Swell. A single mom with a night off from three kids, my friend throws on a lovely dress and off we go to have a nice evening. We arrive. I use the restroom to wash my hands, and while that's going on, I can hear her requesting a table. The place is practically empty. I hear her say, "but we just called..." I find her by the door, ready to leave. She had been dismissively told: "I know what I said, but we have 25 people about to come in, we can't seat two." (there's even a picnic table outside we could have sat at) So this is a review for those making a reservation, or being told over the phone that they may come in: you should have second thoughts about your evening. Saap may change their tune when you go through the trouble of arriving at their door. After being INVITED. Seriously, what a sht show. I see from other reviews that the host and service are often a problem. It's not rocket science to be hospitable in the restaurant industry, and it's both discourteous, humiliating, and antithetical to your very job to turn two guests away after you said you had a seat for them. I'm really conflicted about this as well. I follow the food scene and was very excited to try Saap. Vermont known for Thai food? Gotta try it! I was and still am very happy for their award. The food here is really good and is "legit." However, my boyfriend and I felt very rushed. We had a reservation (around 7:15 pm) and did not know that was near the time they close (7:45pm). That's on me. I should have realized that not every town operates on a major city hours of operation. We just happened to enjoy eating later. What was a bit of a shocker was when I called them to let them know we were a few minutes late because Google took us a different route (literally 4 minutes late), one of the employees made it very obvious that if we were not there on time that they would not be able to serve us. When we showed up, there was one other table about to leave and so we had the place by ourselves. The one waiter was eating his dinner in between serving us and watched as the Chef and her husband sat a nearby table to count money, review orders, etc. It did not seem welcoming at all and we felt like we were very rushed. We ordered the wings and spring rolls for app and the panang curry, pad krapow for our entrees. The entrees were great and had excellent flavor. What I enjoyed most were the amount of vegetables in my curry dish. What I did not care for were the spring rolls, which tasted like your average spring rolls, only charged $13. That was simply not worth the price. The wings were great and I would recommend those. Overall, we felt the interaction of our waiter and seeing the owners sitting at a table next to us made us feel like we needed to leave immediately. But as stated time and time again, I will always rate more so for the food, which is why I gave stars. But I honestly wouldn't even bother coming back for dinner. read more

One of the best Thai cuisines I've ever had. Every dish had multiple layers of complex flavors that emulsify into a one-of-a-kind experience. Here, I was able to sweat through the summer heat (Thai spice level Tom Yum soup), cool off in an ocean (Thai tea), and swim amongst sea crabs (Isan style papaya salad). Heads up, they don't hold back on the spice level - even the 3 out of 5 Thai spice level is the real deal. The cherry on top would have been a mango sticky rice. One of the waiters mentioned that they had it before, but it was taking too long to prepare and making customers wait for 30-45 min. I would wait that long, so I hope they consider bring it back! We had reservations and were promptly sat. The restaurant ambiance was nothing special, typical Thai restaurant decor. 20 long minutes later my order was taken. Only 1 server- the owner. He was polite. Food came out in a timely manner, but it was bad. Everything was very sweet and didn't taste right. I couldn't finish. I'm so bummed to be giving Saap just 3 stars, but our experience was honestly just ok. Definitely not bad, but also not necessarily good. We had the pork spring rolls to start. They were crispy and the peanut dipping sauce had rough-chopped peanuts, which was a nice textural touch. The serving size was pretty small but good enough for two people. We ordered the pork pad see ew and tofu massaman curry for our mains. For what we got, prices were definitely too high. I would expect to pay closer to the $13-15 range for what was basically a tofu soup with a smile pile of white rice. I'm not as familiar with Northern Thai cuisine, so perhaps that influences this next take, but the massaman curry was pretty sour/acidic. I expected it to have more of a nutty flavor to counter that. The pork noodles were good, but we wanted more of the noodles themselves! It was just a bit lacking. We ended with the mango dessert, which we were both really excited to try. It came out kind of... sad? Just half a mango sliced with some rice and a sauce we both found a bit too salty. Definitely would not recommend, you can easily make this at home for well under the charged $12. Service was ok--our server was a really nice guy but he was the only one there, meaning dirty dishes were left on our table even after dessert was served. The ambience was strange--just had the vibes of a take-out restaurant not meant to actually host guests. I really hope Saap can turn it around and that future guests have a better experience. We were so excited for this and bummed to be let down. I would not recommend this restaurant in its current state, but I'd love to see them pick back up and I'm rooting for them! read more

Restaurant is in part of a converted house, so it's not exactly classic restaurant vibe, but it's warm and friendly. Service can be slow - the one person serving when we were there had quite a few tables to manage - but we never felt neglected. Saap is trying to elevate Thai cuisine in the US. I do have a feeling they may have received bonus points for existing in the middle of nowhere. Terrible ambiance. Mismatched light bulb temperatures, fixtures and furniture straight from 1993 with some of it belonging on the patio. If you're expecting a romantic and lovely dining experience, this is probably the worst place you could possibly go in town unless you close your eyes. Hit or miss service. I don't think I could recommend this place to a friend based on our experience. We did not have a reservation for our table of 4, so we were treated pretty poorly- we were asked to wait 45 min for a table and once we were seated, we waited another 20 minutes to get water. The food took a while as well (~45 min after the waters) and it seemed pretty obvious that the owner/waiter was partial to certain customers and not others- it felt like we were not welcome there. The food tasted pretty good. We got 2 pad see ew's, a green curry, and a pork noodle dish with tamarind. The green curry was definitely the star. It was unfortunate for the restaurant because we really WANTED to like them, but I got a piece of plastic (like a plastic bag) in my pad see ew- the owner did take this off the bill, thankfully. Still, it was pretty off-putting, and I would expect more from a place that has a "James Beard Award". I think the restaurant could benefit from hiring help- it was just the husband/owner waiting tables and I think just the wife cooking in the back. There was 1 bus boy. Perhaps we stressed them. I don't know if they are trying to save money or keep things small, but it came off to us (via the owner) like we weren't good enough to be eating there. A 5-star Thai restaurant in Vermont? Count me in! Saap is a northern Thai restaurant located in Randolph, VT. I came for lunch, and Steve gave us a warm greeting. Throughout my meal, Steve was super enthusiastic to share about the dishes and his family's passion for Thai food. You can definitely see the quality and care put into presentation of the entire restaurant and dishes themselves. The atmosphere is pleasant--it's traditional yet modern and very clean. I was impressed with the variety in the menu as they serve many dishes that are not usually served in American Thai restaurants because they specialize in Isaan cuisine. I had the Goong Ob Woonsen which is glass noodles cooked in a pot with broth served with shrimp, pork shoulder, soy sauce, oyster sauce, and ginger. The pork shoulder was cooked to perfection and there was a really generous portion of shrimp in the dish. For me, the dish was way too salty but I think there was just a little too much oyster and soy sauce for my taste. In fact, the noodles toward the bottom that did not absorb all of this sauce was delicious! I would order this again, but next time I would ask for a mild portion of the sauces. While the service is very friendly, you should expect to leave ample time for your meal. If you're in the mood for authentic Thai food, I would recommend visiting Saap! P.S.
